Backing Bean Validation Method error

Hi all,
I've an ADF JSF User Registration Form and I want to set my server-side validation to confirm passwords entered by the user using the validator attribute bound to customized validation logic sitting in a method my backing bean. I've tried quite a few cracks at this but I still seem to get a java.lang.NullPointerException error when the method is invoked.
The relevant method in my Backing Bean looks like this:
public void comparePassword(FacesContext facesContext, UIComponent uiComponent, Object newValue) {
//Get the new value that is passed passed from the Confirm Password field
String confirmPassword = (String)newValue;
//Get the password that has already been entered
String password = (String)getLoginPasswordText().getValue();
//Compare passwords and raise validation error message
if (!password.equals(confirmPassword)){
throw new ValidatorException(new FacesMessage
(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_ERROR,
"Passwords need to be the same",
"Password values should be the same"));
The getters and setters for the components are also in the bean and the gettLoginPasswordText() returns the original password input text field (the one that I want to compare it to).
Is there something that I've missed here?
Cheers

Thanks Frank.
I now understand a bit more about value binding. But unfortunately I need a little more help (from anyone) on this one. I've tried quite a few things and I think the problem stems from the fact that the validation code doesn't seem to pickup the value entered in the comparison field - at least in the way that I've coded it. Here's a more complete example of what I'm trying to overcome:
I've got two input text components:
<af:inputText required="true" simple="true"
id="loginPasswordText"
immediate="true"
value="#{backing_UserRegistration.password1}">
</af:inputText>
<af:inputText required="true" simple="true"
id="loginConfirmPasswordText"
immediate="true"
validator="#{backing_UserRegistration.comparePassword}"
value="#{backing_UserRegistration.password2}">
</af:inputText>
I've setup the relevant accessors as in the following:
String password1 = "";
public String getPassword1(){
return password1;
String password2 = "";
public String getPassword2(){
return password2;
And my validation now code looks like this:
public void comparePassword(FacesContext context, UIComponent toValidate, Object value) {
if (!Password2.equals(Password1)) {
FacesMessage msg = new FacesMessage("summary message", " detailed message");
msg.setSeverity(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_INFO);
ValidatorException e = new ValidatorException(msg);
throw e;
I've tested the validation code on a standalone basis ie passing in a new variable as part of the method ie.
String word = (String) value;
if (word.equals("tom"))....
The validator and message fires OK, so I know the problem lies with picking up the entered values for password1 and password2. I know the values are there because I can "see" them on screen and they are recognized by standalone validators and the bean has a session scope.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks

  • JSF 1.0 Final - no backing bean validation of empty imputs

    Hi,
    I have simple inputText with validator in backing bean :
    <h:inputText id="layName" maxlength="30" value="#{shp.layerName}" validator="#{shp.validate}"/>
    and validator is executed properly when inputText isn't empty, but when is empty it isn't !.
    In my opinion validator should be executed in every reason, so I wonder if it is a bug ?
    I know that I can set required attribute to "true" and have additional validation of empty values :
    <h:inputText required="true" id="layName" maxlength="30" value="#{shp.layerName}" validator="#{shp.validate}"/>
    <h:message id="errors1" for="layName"/>
    but in this case I will receive standard error message. So my second question is how to overwrite this message with localized massage if backing bean validator isn't executed ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Olek

    If required is "false", then validators will not execute when the field is empty.
    The spec defines how to override the error message for when "required" validation fails, though I don't have the spec handy at the moment.

  • What is execution order of  backing bean default methods ?

    Hi
    Thank you for reading my post.
    what is execution order of backing bean methods like :
    constructor . init , preproccess , prerender .. ?
    thanks

    Hi
    Thank you for reading my post.
    what is execution order of backing bean methods like
    constructor . init , preproccess , prerender .. ?So far, so good. That is the order. However, preprocess is only called on postback and prerender is only called if the page is going to be rendered.
    To learn about these methods and when/how they are called.

  • Backing Bean method not invoked - h:selectOneRadio

    Hi,
    I am trying to invoke a method in the backing bean when a radio button is selected, but for some reasons the method is not getting invoked, any idea why is it so? copying the code for reference.
    I have a command button in this jsp which when clicked is fetching the records(from the backing bean) perfectly and a radio button for each of the record so user can select any one of the records listed.

    The valueChangeListener runs at the server side. You need to submit the form to the server side to invoke the valueChangeListener. There is no client side magic like Javascript.
    To submit the parent form on change of the dropdown, just add the following attribute with a piece of Javascript to the h:selectOneMenu:onchange="this.form.submit()"

  • About backing bean method's invokation

    Hi,
    I have a backing bean method binded to a component:
    <af:selectOneChoice value="#{bindings.managerId.inputValue}"
    label="Manager" valign="middle"
    binding="#{backing_searchDocuments.managersList}"
    valuePassThru="true" immediate="false"
    rendered="#{bindings.ListManagersIterator.estimatedRowCount > 1}">
    <f:selectItems value="#{bindings.managerId.items}"/>
    When page refreshes component executes his binding method. But in some cases, actually when I press the commandMenuItem leading to the same page where I am it seems that it doesn't get invoked.. how can I manage the invocation of backing bean's methods? I need it invoked every time any request is made.. How to do that?

    Mario,
    this method is executed when the component re-draws. So anything other than a PPR request makes this binding method being called.
    If PPR is used with your commandMenuItem, them make sure the PPR trigger is set to refresh the component.
    I don't know what code it is that you need to execute each time, but maybe putting this on a action listener is a better idea

  • How open new browser in JSF after executing backing bean method

    hi All,
    Can you please tell me how to open a new browser after executing action method in bean.
    I have writen one java script function, i am passing the string url which i got from the backing bean action method.
    First of all i want to execute action method then only javascript function.
    waiting for your quick reply.
    thanks & regards

    hi,
    That command link in data table. The requirement is like this:
    I have datatable, the columns are
    1) <h:selectBooleanCheckbox ....
    2) <h:commandLink ....
    requirement 1:
    if user select the boolean check box and click the command link
    then I want to execute the backing bean action method , it returns string url and show in new browser window( popup window with toolbar ).
    requirement 2:
    if user not select the boolean check box and click the command link then I want to excute the backing bean action method, it returns string url and show in the same browser ( through navigation rule we can show that page.)
    Please look the below command link code.......
    <h:commandLink id="belegnr" onmousedown="return showPopupWindowForInvoiceForGraphicImage( '#{row.importKz}', '#{row.blnChecked}', '#{InvoiceMecBoxBean.printInvoiceFilePath}');" styleClass="input" style="color:blue" value="#{row.belegnr}" action="#{InvoiceMecBoxBean.editLinkAction}"/>
    Can u please give me the idea istead of command link can we use outputlink to fullfil the requirement?. Or any suggestion please......
    Here in my case commandlink value is differenet and after action the return value is different to show in new window. that is problem here.
    thanks & regards

  • Error when I call a method of AppModule from a backing bean.

    I use Jdeveloper 10.1.3.0.3 EA.
    In my application I have created ApplModule and UsrView(for my table USR).
    I have a login page (login.jsp and the backing login.java) with 2 fields userName and password and an ADF Faces Core command button (cmdCheckPass) and the method cmdCheckPass _action() for the click event .
    The problem is that I can’t call method testPassword(userName, password) which is written in AppModule. (I get error:
    javax.faces.FacesException: #{backing_login.cmdCheckPass_action}: javax.faces.el.EvaluationException: java.lang.NullPointerException) from line:
    answer = app.testPass(st1,st2);
    The code is as follows:
    public String cmdCheckPass_action() {
    String answer="";
    String mes = "";
    String st1=this.getInputText1().getValue().toString();
    String st2=this.getInputText2().getValue().toString();
    AppModuleImpl app = new AppModuleImpl();
    answer = app.testPass(st1,st2);
    if (answer == "OK") {
    return "toMain";
    } else {
    answer = "";
    mes="Invalid username, password !!!";
    FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().addMessage(null,new FacesMessage(mes));
    return answer;}
    I don’t know if theoretically is right to call, from a backing bean, a custom method of AppModule.
    Can I have any help on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Panos

    Some quick ideas:
    Is the clip the same NTSC/PAL standard as the project you are importing it to?
    Have you tried to rename the offending clip (do NOT rename any clips inside the iMovie /Media folder!!).
    How much free space do you have on the iMovie project volume -- what is the size of the imported clip?

  • Action method of backing bean called multiple times instead of once.

    Hi,
    My backing bean has an action method called "saveEquipmentList" that's called when a "Save" button is clicked. The problem is, this method gets executed twice every time the button is clicked so data gets peristed twice, db triggers get executed twice, etc., it's really pretty annoying. I've put the bean method's code and the JSF command button below, notice that there's a check for FacesContext.getRenderResponse() that I put in for debugging, the code doesn't get executed at all if I leave the FacesContext.getRenderResponse() in, sure, you're saying "So what's you point", no point, just thought I'd explain why the check is in there.
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • Throwing error from backing bean on button click?

    Hi Everyone,
    i have two lovs out of 2 lovs user has to select atleast one lov value and click on find button.
    On clicking on find button im getting lov values if atleast one is not selected i need to throw one error message.
    How can i throw error message?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    i used this code:
    public String showMessage() {
    System.out.println("inside error msg");
    String messageText="Please select emp or ename";
    FacesMessage fm = new FacesMessage(messageText);
    * set the type of the message.
    * Valid types: error, fatal,info,warning
    //fm.setSeverity(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_INFO);
    fm.setSeverity(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_ERROR);
    FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    context.addMessage(null, fm);
    System.out.println("end of error msg");
    return null;
    And called this method on clicking on find button in the method binding of the find button but it didnt show any error dialog bax rather it moved to the next page as usual.
    Code in the find backing bean:
    public String Find(){
    if(Emp.equalsIgnoreCase("ALL") && EmpNo.equalsIgnoreCase("ALL")) {

  • ADF BC/Faces - Order of validation / backing bean action problem

    Hello,
    I want the user to enter the same "operation date" into all adf faces table rows created in one batch (one transaction).
    So I removed operation date field from the table and added "unbound" date field above the table. The date field value is then copied into all new rows in background. This process is invoked from backing bean from Commit button actionListener method.
    The problem is the validation of the operation date in entity is executed before a new date value is copied into the date attribute (validation of model is in JSF lifecycle executed prior invoking actions in backing beans).
    It means the user can enter dead lock when he enters invalid date (for example date higher then a valid value).
    Then after commit:
    1. First validation is ok (wrong date value haven't been copied into model yet)
    2. backing bean copy action is executed - model now contains wrong date value
    3. Validation before commit isn't successfult - error message is displayed
    4. User corrects the date value and presses commit again but:
    5. First validation is not successful - model still contains recent wrong date value - error message is displayed again
    6.There is no way out from this situation
    I'm going to override lifecycle to be able to invoke copy method before validation cycle. Is this solution acceptable? Do you have any other suggestion?
    Thank you.
    Rado

    hi Rado
    Would it make sense to design your ADF BC View Objects in some kind of master-detail shape that fits your data?
    View Object : OperationMaster (OperationDateAttr, ...)
    View Object : OperationDetail (OperationAttr1, OperationAttr2, ...)
    View Link : OperationDetailForMasterVL (based on some attribute that keeps the detail rows together)
    You would need some Application Module method that does the "row batch setup", but it look like your already have something like this.
    A change to OperationMaster.OperationDateAttr could update all its detail rows date attribute.
    I think that building a UI on this would be less "view layer dependant".
    Just a suggestion.

  • How to call backing bean method when user tabs out of af:inputListOfValues field

    Hi,
    I am using jdev 11.1.2.4.
    I want to call a backing bean method based on the value selected in the af:inputListOfValues field.
    The requirement is similar as Frank Nimphius-Oracle has demonstrated here  https://blogs.oracle.com/jdevotnharvest/entry/how_to_notify_the_server but with Input List of Values component.
    The fields I want to call method from is
    <af:inputListOfValues id="appealNameId"
                          popupTitle="Search and Select: #{bindings.AppealName.hints.label}"
                          value="#{bindings.AppealName.inputValue}"
                          label="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.label}"
                          model="#{bindings.AppealName.listOfValuesModel}"
                          required="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.mandatory}"
                          columns="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.displayWidth}"
                          shortDesc="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.tooltip}"
                          binding="#{backingBeanScope.backing_Donation.appealNameId}"
                          autoSubmit="true" clientComponent="false">
                          <f:validator binding="#{bindings.AppealName.validator}"/>
                          <af:autoSuggestBehavior suggestedItems="#{backingBeanScope.backing_Donation.onSuggestAppeal}"/>
                          <af:clientListener method="onBlurTxtField" type="blur"/>
    </af:inputListOfValues>
    <af:serverListener type="onBlurNotifyServer"
                       method="#{backingBeanScope.backing_Donation.onBlurNotify}"/>
    as you can see,  af:serverListener is outside the af:inputListOfValues which probably is the reason its not executing this method?
    public void onBlurNotify(ClientEvent clientEvent) {
       // get a hold of the input text component
       RichSelectOneChoice inputTxt =  (RichSelectOneChoice) clientEvent.getComponent();
       //do some work on it here (e.g. manipulating its readOnly state)
       //Get access to the payload
       Map  parameters = clientEvent.getParameters();
       System.out.println("SubmittedValue = "+parameters.get("submittedValue"));
       System.out.println("LocalValue =  "+parameters.get("localValue"));
    I've tried to put serverListener tag inside the <af:inputListOfValues> but getting below error
    "Server Listener is not valid child of Input List of Values"
    any ideas please?
    thanks

    As first, check to see that you are using correct type for af:serverListener (thet one you are queue in the javaScript onBlurTxtField function)
    If still does not work, go to directly to the page source code, and put af:serverListener "by hand", as a child for af:inputListOfValues.
    Because it is possible that these messages are false alarm...

    but, the action method "saveBean()" is not being called Maybe there was a validation or conversion error occurred. Add <h:messages /> to your page to take note of them and handle accordingly. Also read the application server logs if there isn't something interesting logged. JSF 1.2 by default logs undisplayed errors to the stdout.
    On the other hand, apart from the problem, you don't need h:panelGroup for single column items. Basically you can remove all of those h:panelGroup tags in your first h:panelGrid.

  • How to set button disabled property based on backing bean method

    JDeveloper 12c
    I have a table and a button on the page. When user selects certain table row I want to enable/disable the button.
    My backing bean (which has backing bean scope in the task flow where the page is) is
    package view.backing;
    public class Studybrowse {
        public Studybrowse() {
        public String b1_action() {
              //Do something here
            return null;
       public boolean b1_user_auth(){
           // Do something here to return true or false
            return true;
    My button is something like this:
    <af:button text="Do something" id="b4" action="#{backingBeanScope.Studybrowse.b1_action}"
                   disabled="#{backingBeanScope.Studybrowse.b1_user_auth THIS DOES NOT WORK}"
                   partialTriggers="t1"/>
    The first problem is in design time, it says: "Reference backingBeanScope.Studybrowse.b1_user_auth not found"
    and in runtime, desired behavior does not work.
    Any help is appreciated

    Timo:
    I changed my backing bean method like this:
        public Boolean isUserAuthorized(){
            // some code here that will return true or false, hardcode to true for now
            return true;
    and the button disabled property like this:
               <af:button text="Go to Reports!" id="b5" action="#{backingBeanScope.Studybrowse.b1_action}"
                           disabled="#{backingBeanScope.Studybrowse.isUserAuthorized}"
                           partialTriggers="t1"/>
    Still same problem in design time there is a warning and 500 error in runtime.

  • Browser Dependency when calling a method in backing bean using a javasript.

    Hi all,
    I have a problem which may look simple but bugging me for quite some time.
    The problem is : When I call a method in the backing bean using a Javascript, (the method can alternatively be invoked by clicking on a command link) I am facing an exception (stack printed below).
    The strange part is that...I am getting this exception only when I use Internet Explorer. It works absolutely fine when I use Mozilla or Netscape browsers. Also, even in ie, it is working fine when I click on the link directly. The probem comes only when I invoke the action using a javascript.
