Backing up your Linux systems with the command line

While there are many GUI-based backup and storage tools for Linux users, there are also a few command line-based tools. "Rsync" is one of these tools and, according to Linux.com, it stands for remote sync. With afull tutorial on how to use rsync, Linux.com walks you through how "one of the most used'tools' in the UNIX world [works]."
Even though it's a simple tool, rsync has quite a few capabilities. You can use rsync "to sync files on two directories on the same PC, on two different systems on the same network, [and] .... on machines thousands of miles apart, over the Internet." In its guide, Linux.com explains each of these processes in detail. While the guide focuses on server backup, each and every command has its place on your personal workstation as well.
What other tools do you use to back up your Linux systems?

try checking relevant environment variables like the CLASSPATH.... a major source of failures in Windows is when in the classpath there is a path containing SPACES.... also enabling some "debug" or "verbose" flag (not sure how to do it) would provide more insight...

  • Can flash player app be run and controlled in a system with only command line?

    I want to test my.  flash app in a remote linux pc. I am not permitted to install  desktop environment in that remote pc.
    So I am wondering if I can use flashplayer_10_sa_debug to run my app in a system with only command line access.
    And further, can I use some command option to interact with my app for doing something?
    If not , how can I reach my goal? Can you give me some advices?

    Hi,
    Can we get a status update for this? This seems to have broken Mac Projector files when published from a PC. Our old CD-ROM presentations no longer work. They throw the same error.
    Is there a bug ticket that we can follow? Any sort of timeline? I need to give an answer to my client on when this will be fixed. Telling them to disable Gatekeeper isn't really a great solution.

  • How do I start an app using transset-df with the command line?

    I'm using openbox and have found that I can make xfce4-panel transparent using transset. The only problem is that I have to run "transset" and then click on the panel every time. Is there a command I could just type in to the command line that would start xfce4-panel with .75 transparency? I could then add that to my autostart.sh file and all would be good and dandy.
    What I was thinking is maybe there's a command like
    transset-df .75 xfce4-panel
    that starts up the panel with 75% opacity. Obviously that doesn't work because I tried it. I also read something about using a script, but I don't know how to write those. Perhaps there is a way to set it so whenever xfce4-panel is started, transset-df sets it at 75% opacity? How would I go about doing this?

    Openbox seems to be doing a 'tidy up' of all windows after autostart.sh completes.
    This would be fine, except for the fact that the tidy up re-renders every window and while it does so it re-sets transparency as part of the same process.
    So, to get your xfce panel to stick at the transparency setting you apply with transset-df, you need to ensure the transset-df is done after autostart.sh finishes.
    The easiest way to achieve this is to create a small script, say in /usr/local/bin
    # /usr/local/bin/openbox-xfce-panel-transset
    # Set xfce4-panel transparency after safe delay
    sleep 1
    transset-df -n "xfce4-panel 4.6.1" 0.75
    Add a call to this as the last line of your autostart.sh
    # Set xfce4-panel transparency after autostart.sh has exited
    openbox-xfce-panel-transset &

  • I don't see the table I had create with the command line

    hi ,
    I just install sql developer, and connect to mydatabase, but I see a lot of tables who are not mine, but I don't see the one I have created. so could you tell me haow t make my tables to appear. or if I have to recreate them with wich command in sql developer? thanks

    Stranger.
    You do not need to recreate tables in the SQL Developer.
    The tables that you created and that they are in the database must be visualized, in accordance with the permissions.
    You are connected to the SQL Developer with the same user that created the table (owner)?
    The table that you desire to see appears below in the result of the command?
    select * from user_tables;

  • Pass the command line argument (argc and argv) to a LabVIEW built shared library.

    Hello,
    I have successully use this trick to build a LabVIEW application that runs on Linux without X Display.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/5D6EC36DCF43343786257449006919E6
    I'd like to know if it's possible to pass the command line arguments ( ./TEST A B C D) directly into the shared library without having to pass the arguments using a array of strings which would require to write code using DSNewHandle, DSSetHandleSize, extract the arguments and ..... (I'm not proficient in C, but if I don't have a choice I will do it and improve my C skills).
    int main(int argc, char *argv[])
            Test(argc, argv);
            return 0;
    Thanks,
    Michel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Well, you can always flatten it back into a space separated single string and pass it like that. Basically reverse what the OS does when it calls your main function with the command line parameters. And while the first element in the array is always the program name itself you can just skip that here, but then format all the rest into a single string.

  • Controlling Apple Chess from the command line

    Hello is it possible to control Apple Chess with the command line? I would like to get two computers to play against each other over a wireless connection, either airport of bluetooth.
    Any other suggestions would be great!
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hey all thanks for your replies. I have figured it out using Max/MSP to send Applescript UI messages to the terminal. Each computer has a patch on it and plays after the other one has made a move. It is quite fun to program as it is using the chess app as an algorithm... anyhow i can't use screen sharing because i want the computers to talk to each other as if they were playing a game of chess against against one another by speaking the moves to each other.
    As if they were two computers at leisure playing chess in a park!
    Best,

  • How can I start System Preferences from the command line?

    Hello All,
    I have an issue I'm not quite sure how to solve. I have been tasked within my business environment  with tightening security on a Mac Leopard system and I've been granted Admin Rights to do this on a temporary basis.
    The problem is as follows:
    1) The original Sys Admin that set up this system is gone, no longer available.
    2) He was a Dvorak Keyboard fan and set up the system for a Dvorak Keyboard.
    3) The system actually has a standard Apple keyboard and is marked accordingly, i.e., qwerty (Most Users in the building have stopped using this system altogether - a terrible waste of a good system - even though some of their apps can be run normally (US style qwerty settings). The command line is useless, as is texteditor.app and a few others unless you know Dvorak layout)
    5) When I open System Preferences, the Dvorak keyboard checkbox is grayed out and I cannot change it. There is no lock at the bottom of that particular screen for me to unlock.
    6) Even though I select the US Keyboard at Login, and some apps work accordingly (like MatLab for example) the terminal is borderline useless. I spent over 2 hrs yesterday doing what should have been able to be done in about 30 minutes. I estimate a frustrating and mistake prone additional 8 to 10 hours to do what is normally a a 4 hour job at the command-line.
    7) I do not have the time or desire to re-mark all the keys on the keyboard, particularly since it is not my call to do so, nor do I have the time to re-learn Dvorak touch-typing, and finally I do not want to re-load the entire system. I just want to change the darn keyboard to a standard qwerty keyboard that is somewhat useful in a terminal environment with vi, command line, etc. It's either that or I go mildly insane
    This is frustrating as all get-out. The new Admin logged in and was able to uncheck his Dvorak settings (he is not a UNIX guy, nor is he comfortable om Macs), and we were hoping this was a system wide setting, but No. We re-booted the system, I logged in, still Dvorak, and the checkbox was still grayed out.
    So I figure, short of re-loading the entre system and all the applications necesary, I can either start the Systems Preferences GUI using sudo and hopefully that will change system-wide settings, or I can delete the .AppleSetupDone file and resetup the system (if the keyboard settings are part of the setup) without spending a couple of days reloading everything and re-setting up users, networks, etc.
    Needless to say, I am hoping for the easiest and quickest solution to this extremely frustrating and  aggravating problem.
    Thanks.

    For my situation the following C# code does the job:
        Process.Start(
           @"c:\Program Files\National Instruments\CVI71\cvi.exe",
           @"c:\temp\experiment.c" );
    The file must already exist.

  • Problem with running a java program from the command line

    I have this code:
    package pkg;
    import jxl.*;
    import java.io.File;
    public class TestClass {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              try{
                   Workbook book = Workbook.getWorkbook(new File("d:/testWorkspace/excFile.xls"));
                   Sheet sheet = book.getSheet(0);
                   String s=sheet.getCell(4, 2).getContents();
                   System.out.println(s);
              }catch (Exception e){System.err.println(e);}
    }I've wrote it in Eclipse, added jxl.jar to the buildpath, and it works fine.
    Then I tried to run it from the command line and I did it like this:
    D:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin> java -cp \jxl.jar pkg.TestClassThe result was:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: pkg/TestClass
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: pkg.TestClass
    ...but the file TestClass.class DOES exist in the folder d:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin\pkg\ and the file jxl.jar IS on the root of drive D (like I already wrote, it worked fine inside the Eclipse).
    So, my question is: How to run this code from the command line?
    I have no idea what went wrong.
    Can someone help me, please?

    The current directory is not implied in the classpath.
    D:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin> java -cp .;d:\ pkg.TestClassor
    D:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin> java -cp .;d:\jxl.jar pkg.TestClassI always forget which is right since I never work with jars...

  • [HP Expert Day] "You are not able to restore this system with the media"

    Welcome to HP Experts day!
    I've got a long-standing problem since last year. Let's see if you can solve this!
     I'll get straight to the point :
    I am unable to perform recovery on my system. This is the error message :
    It's a USB recovery media created with the HP recovery media utility on the same laptop. Tested to work correctly before I sent it for RMA on my SSD. It initially was running on a micron SSD. When I got it back, it was a samsung SSD instead, according to some benchmark results.
    Laptop : HP Envy Spectre XT 13-2018TU
    P.S I've already opened another thread on this last year.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Recovery/Unable-to-boot-from-USB-recovery-media/m-p/2197929#M1...
    But they were stumped.

    I had this exact same issue on a Spectre XT Pro Ultrabook.
    The original SSD failed and I was sent a replacement, was fortunate enough to be able to create a Recovery USB stick using the wizard in Windows. When booting from USB I received the message "You are not able to restore this system with the media".
    SOLUTION: You must NOT use the Recovery USB stick in any USB3.0 port (labelled SS). Using another USB port prevented this exact error message from appearing and I was able to complete the system restore process.
    I hope this helps someone, I signed up and posted here especially for this reason!

    Hi Bruce,
    Out from what I can find on this network card is it not possible to get the mac address without a OS. I would recommend you to get/burn a Linux/Ubuntu live CD/DVD and run a Ifconfig in there.
    Hope it helps you.

  • How can I print the test page with the Arabic type from the command line

    Hi,
    I have been trying to make the tool for printing the test page from the command line on the Arabic OS. I used "rundll32 printui dll printuientry" with "/k /n" options. My tool is to print the test page in all OS when pushing the
    button.
    Normally, in the Arabic Windows, the test page is printed with RTL type when printing the test page in the "Devices and Printers". But in my tool, the test page is printed with LTR type. I'm confused because of this result.
    Is it possilbe to print the test page with RTL type when using the "rundll32 printui dll printuientry"? If it is possible, could anyone give me the hint or information for resolving?
    Please check for me.
