Backups when the DB in NOARCHIVELOG

Hi
Assume the DB is in NOARCHIVELOG mode
Is it possible to
- back up the SYSTEM tablespace in your database when the database is open?
- backup a read-only tablespace even when the database is open?
- back up a dictionary-managed tablespace even when the database is open?
(It says:
A dictionary-managed tablespace can be backed up by placing the tablespace in the online backup mode and copying the corresponding datafiles.)- What is meant by 'online backup mode'?
-IS it possible to backup a datafile, either the relavent tablespace is online/offline/read only
Thanks

Hi,
Online Backup Mode:
Tablespace Backup:
Each tablespace that needs to be backed-up must be switched into backup mode before copying the files out . Look at this simple example:
ALTER TABLESPACE test BEGIN BACKUP;
! cp db_test_01.dbf /backupDir/
ALTER TABLESPACE test END BACKUP;
Database Backup:
Since 9i you can do it at DB level:
Alter database begin backup;
-then copy all the files
Alter database end backup;
Don forget to make a copy of the controlfile too:
ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE;   -- Force log switch to update control file headers
ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO '/backup/control.dbf';Cheers,

Time Machine not deleting oldest backups when the disk is full

Unfortunately, when this happens, Time Machine cannot erase enough space to create room for the new backup. Your options now are:
    1) Add a new Time Capsule or a hard drive to the USB port on the existing Time Capsule and continue with backups
    2) Manually delete backups from Time Machine....which is a long and tedious process.  After a few hours, not much space will be reclaimed and it will not be long before the Time Capsule is full again
    3) Erase the Time Capsule....if you really do not need all the old backups from months ago....and start over with a new Time Machine backup and move forward again

  • Time Machine - using multiple drives when the first is not available

Hello I have been succussfully using Time Machine with my USB external drive. I have been connecting it to my MacBook Air from time to time. Manual backups as well as the hourly backups when the drive has been connected worked without any problem.
Recently, I connected Synology DiskStation (NAS) to my network and I have added it to the list of drives in my Time Machine setup. When my original external drive (first in the list) is not connected to my MacBook  the hourly backup is not initiated by the Time Machine at all. Manually started backup is runnign fine without any problem.
The external drive is annotated with exclamation mark in Time Machines list with "not available" error - and it seems that this is causing the interruption of automatic hourly backup to any drive.
Is there any way how to debug Time Machine? Or to get some logs of Time Machine?
Any similar experience with multiple drive backup when the first of them is disconnected most of the time...?
Thanks a lot for any help
    Petr

Perhaps you should address this to Synology's tech support. Apple doesn't provide any support for third-party NAS, so your best bet is with Synology.

  • TM backup when MBP sleep mode?

My TM didnt backup when the MBP went to sleep.  It said it had to be formatted in OSX journaled.  But, it backs up perfectly when the MBP is on?  Not sure what is happening.

Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and look for a setting for Power Nap.
If it's there, enable Power Nap to have the Mac backup when it is sleeping.
If the setting is not there, check this Apple Support document to see if the feature can be enabled on your computer, and for more general information about this feature.

How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.

That's up to you. Do you want the data on your old phone on your new phone? If so, you follow the directions here:

If you want to setup your new phone as a new device, then there is nothing you need to do.

Anyone know how to fix it?

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think.

  • When I plug in my ipad it automatically tries to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

When I plug in my ipad it automatically tires to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

  • Taking the datafile offline when the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode

My question is when the database is in No Archive log mode i'm not able to take the datafile offline.

I have tried the command alter database datafile 6 offline drop; (in NOARCHIVELOG mode) and it is showing the same effect as alter database datafile 6 offline; ( in ARCHIVELOG mode).
*In the NOARCHIVELOG mode are we really dropping the datafile to take the datafile offline? Will you please tell me the effect of keyword drop.

You've marked your question answered - was that a mistake?
The answer is that you cannot directly take a datafile offline in noarchivelog mode. You must take the tablespace offline:
Hmm, are you certain about that? Perhaps I'm missing something.

  • ITunes ask me to restore from a old backup all the time when I connect my iPhone5.

Hi! My iTunes ask me to restore from a backup when I connect my new iPhone 5. I have done the backup process but it still ask me to do it. How do I get iTunes to understand that this is done?
I connected my iPhone and restore it from a backup from my old iPhone 4. It worked well. But when i connect the iPhone to iTunes it ask all the time the same thing.
    1. this is a new iPhone bla bla or...
    2. restore from a old copy. (strange is that it says that this was done 1982 all the time?!?!).
The MacBook Pro is new and I have the latest iTunes 11.0.1. (12)
    Glad for any help!!
    Best regards
    Pontus

Maybe you should have connected as a new phone instead of trying to put an iPhone 4 backup on an iPhone 5.
Try restoring it to factory setings and start again. If all your music and contact s are on the computer then you should be good to go.

  • HT4946 I want to sync my iPad with an older backup, not the old created when I plug mt device in.  Following a problem with my iPad I have lost all my data from a game app and I am trying to retrieve it

Following a problem with my IPad and restoring it, I have lost the data in one of my game Apps ... I can see in ITunes/ pref my iPad back ups and want to try to sync with an older back up to get the data back.  So how can I sync with an oldera back up?

In that same window - the one where you see your backups - click on the box at the bottom that say -Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads form syncing automatically. Then click OK and quit iTunes.
Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading and select - Restore from backup. A window will pop up from which you can select any of the backups that you have for the iPad. Select the backup that you want to restore from and then go agreed and restore the iPad. Sync with iTunes when you are done.
Remember that when you restore from a backup - you restore everything in that backup to the iPad. You cannot selectively restore content. It is all or none.

Try runing iTunes in admin mode. That fixed the issue for me. You can either right click on the shortcut on your desktop and choose to run as an admin each time you launch it or go to the advanced tab under security on the program itself and click the run as admin every time.

Why don't you talk to apple and find out if backup exists? That conversation with apple will stop your guessing.
