Bad hyperlinks when saving Pages doc as PDF

I produce a little monthly newsletter for a local Mac club.  We do the layout in pages.  I write the article another member lays them out in Pages.  A couple others proof.
We've been having a problem that is driving me crazy in Pages 09.  We use Print, then save as PDF, so we can get a format that everyone can read.  Almost always when we do this, links that worked fine in the Pages document convert to an address that no longer works (usually something on the creator's computer that he has placed in the document).  I'm saying almost all links (but not quite all) in the entire document end up with this same bad address in the final Adobe PDF version.
The only way we have found to fix this is by abandoning the entire hyperlinks system and typing out http://www.blah.blah in our text, which feels extremely early Internet and not the type of polished production we're aiming for.
Does anyone know what might be causing this problem or how to fix it?  I've gone in one of our documents, completely removed the link, and then replaced it.  It still has the same address to something on my colleague's computer.  It's just crazy.  This is a nasty, nasty bug.
Thanks in advance for any clues.

I assume that this post is related to Gene Madill's a couple of hours ago. Is that so? I'm thinking that someone in the chain of custody has a machine that has an OS corruption. Possibly a system not properly updated to the latest version of Snow Leopard.
There have been a couple of bugs in incremental Snow Leopard updates. One at 10.6.2 and another at 10.6.7.
Are you up to speed on these issues? Are all of you up to date and clean?

  • How to retain the hyperlinks when converting Word doc to PDF?

For adobe acrobat 9 pro, I can't figure out how to keep the hyperlinks working. If I create pdf from word doc by save as, it can't embed fonts, but links work. If I use "print" in word, it embeds fonts, but some hyperlinks didn't work. What to do to keep fonts embedded and links working? It drove me crazy! HELP!!!

Depends on the version of WORD. With OFFICE 2007, go to the Adobe menu and select Create PDF (this is PDF Maker). That will save the links. A similar process is needed for OFFICE 2003. With OFFICE 2010, you will have to upgrade to AA X or add them in Acrobat manually.

  • Saved Pages doc as pdf now I want to edit it

I created a document in Pages and saved it as a pdf, but I forgot to save a version that I can edit. How do I revert back to a document that I can edit? I usually save a Pages document and a second pdf document. Thank you!

Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. Application software has its own file format which is editable/revisable. There are two main types of application-independent e-paper format for interchange, the document markup type (ISO 8879 SGML family) where you save the character information and the logical reading order without saving the layout rendering order, and the document mastering type (ISO-IEC 10180 SPDL family) where you save the layout rendering order, but not the character information and the logical reading order. PDF falls in the second family and is not intended to be revisable/editable whereas HTML falls in the first family that was from the first intended to be revisable/editable. In other words, if what you have is a PDF, then you can try to manually copy out as much of the character information as possible, reconstruct the flow of paragraphs and columns, revise the character information, and select the imageable composition you want for the new document.

  • How can I retain hyperlinks while saving a webpage as PDF via Print?

How can I retain hyperlinks while saving a webpage as PDF via Print?
This is the title of an apple forum question, and it is a bug in both Safari 5.1.3 and under, and I find it to also occur in Firefox browser (at least 9.* 10.*, 11.0), running on Lion OS (10.7.2, 10.7.3). See:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3212301?start=0&tstart=0
Under the newer Mac OS mentioned, and Firefox 10.2, 11.0, 9.*, if I select:
File -> Print -> PDF -> Open PDF in Preview"
(and view / save the PDF in Preview, you will see none of the links in the original web page are active
    or using
File -> Print -> PDF -> Save as PDF...
same problem. Try this using any Wikipedia page, for example.
When this problem was posed in Apple forums, by a user of the Safari browser, it was found to be a bug (since Aug 2011) fixed in a Safari browser build 5.1.4 circa Jan 2012. I tried the newer Safari browser and sure enough the problem went away (except that links embedded in the PDF no longer appeared as blue text - ARGH - but "hover over" with the cursor showed the link and clicking the link in Preview viewer activated the link in a browser window).
So I post this to the Mozilla community, please fix this 'cause I don't want to have to switch over to Safari browser every time I want to archive a PDF with active links!!!!
P.S. I did a spot-check and with the newer add-on Enjoy Reading 1.0.1 and FF11.0. When the Enjoy reading formatted version appears in the browser window, all URLs/links are preserved and highlighted in blue, but when I print that browser window as PDF, the links are dead (don't work) even though they appear in blue in the PDF.
So, what's going on, can the Safari fix be researched and applied to FF?
Also, on some forums, people are responding, Well, try installing Acrobat reader. Well, I don't want to, Preview reader has worked fine for me for years.

    Thanks jscher2000.
RE: -- '''Generally speaking, PDF converters that work by intercepting a print job do not have access to the URLs behind links in the page.''' --
I cannot say I agree. I could email you a PDF clipping or two (generated from Safari on Mac OS, in its native capability with no add-ons) that shows you otherwise. When I used PC platforms I did have to install PDF converters (tried both free and expensive ones) that did what I describe.
I cannot try the add-on you mention, '''Print Pages to Pdf.''' in Firefox. It shows in my browser and Mac OS platform "Not available for your platform." So I am guessing it was written for the PC version of Firefox.
The Mac OS has had a native PDF-creation functionality for as many years as I have been using it; I used PC prior to that, Win3.1 through XP and NT. And on my PC, I bought (and at work, my employer bought $$$, I had to justify three levels up to management the ability to create PDFs on my work PC) some Adobe functionality to CREATE pdf's (readin's free and easy, makin' em's costly on the PC).
I've gone and dug through some of my (Mac) doc and clipping archives, and I find that stuff I created after about Dec 2008 or so seems to eliminate all link functionality. When viewed in the Apple native "Preview" application (sort of Apple's equivalent to Adobe Acrobat reader, ships with the OS): link tags are highlighted/tinted, clicking a link opens a (default) browser and takes you there; hover-over the tag text shows the actual link. (Of course, not all old links are still VALID or point to the desired source.)
I could, in Safari or FF browser window and with no add-ons or Adobe paid products whatsoever, use the native OS method to create PDF's from any application (word processor, spreadsheet, browser, etc) via the menu File -> Print -> Save as PDF menu and create a PDF that had active hyperlinks. In Apple OS Lion 10.7.3, I still can't when it uses this broken WebKit interface, links are "dead" as a doornail until a fix is distributed in WebKit for a future Lion release. It seems this functionality died at least as far back as Leopard OS 10.6.8, but don't quote me on that. Also, my version of Pages 2009 version 4.1(923) (sorta like Word) STILL creates a PDF document that preserves (1) text hyper-links within the document, and (2) web links (in the PDF) that open the browser. I just made a test document.
When all you can see in the PDF is the tag text, there is nothing to copy-paste to follow any link. Also, hypertext links are often used by authors to create links to other points in a document: now even *that* is broken in the PDF version of the documents I retrieve from the web and print from FireFox (Broken in Safari 5.1.3 and earlier but fixed in 5.1.4).
Try this on the PC, in your browser and print a news clipping as PDF, do the links in the PDF work? What products do this, and what don't? I would bet the machine with a full Adobe suite this will work flawlessly. (Why should a PC user have to pay hundreds of $ to create this functionality in what I thought was an open standard (PDF)? But that's talkin' religion, let's not start that.)
    Some folks might say,
go online and find the original source doc in your browser. Or,
go and add those links manually using the Preview edit add-link capability (hunh? no thanks) , or
save each item worth saving as an HTML archive instead of a PDF (argh, creating a whole directory in the process, I might add, including ads). Or,
who needs PDFs, everything is online.
    Or, buy some Adobe product.
I think they miss my point. This is a real strange dumbing-down of archival PDF documents, or at least a destruction of the ability to use PDF as an archive that retains its links and references.
C.F. the guy who has archives of scientific papers, and the old material all cross-references nicely but after date X there are no working links.

  • How can I insert a Pages, Doc, or PDF file into a Keynote presentation?

I need to insert a document (.pages, .doc, or .pdf anyone) into a Keynote for a portfolio that I must present.  How can I do this?  It doesn't give me that option under hyperlink in inspector.

the best is to insert screenshot directly in keynote. If it's for a paper version save everything as pdf and compile with "combine pdf".

  • How to retain font-size when saving filled in form (pdf)

    Hi,
I have a pdf form from an organization and when I fill in the (text)boxes, the more text I put in there, the font-size will adjust to fit everything in. However, when I save the pdf file and view it in a different pdf reader the font-size is too big and half of the text is not visible.
Also, the form contains some checkboxes/radiobuttons. When filling in the form they work just fine, but when saved and viewed both the yes and no are checked, even though I only checked one of them.
Anyone have any idea how I could fix this?
    Thank you in advance
    (using: Acrobat XI 11.0.0)

Ow.. I don't know the solution yet, but maybe something went wrong earlier with someone else who filled it in partially. I found the original on the internet and that seems to work so far.

  • Problem saving Word doc as PDF - Vista?

I have a pc with Vista and Word 2007. I have adobe Reader 9 or 9.1. Some free download or add on thing allows me to save word docs as PDFs. This worked fine to start with but then I found I couldn't move the PDFs I have created from one file to another or delete them. Next I found I couldn't move other PDFs I have downloaded from websites. Then I found I couldn't open the PDFs I had created but I could still open website PDFs I had downloaded. I can still open, move and delte PDFs created on a mac and sent to me by email or memory stick. What is going on? Please help!

So you're saving them from Word using "Save as", correct?
If so, what happens if you use File>Save as>Adobe PDF?

    Hi,
as I wrote you previously I think that the problem is the BADI you've implemented.
I did what you require with badi CRM_BP_UIU_SAVE with a code similar to this

  • Why is one TIFF pixelated when saving .pages file as .doc?

Hi, when I save my Pages file as Word '.doc' format (using the standard 'save copy as' method, OR exporting as .doc) one of the high resolution TIFFs in the file always shows up pixelated, the other is sharp.
Do you know why one TIFF would be pixelated, and how to get them both showing sharp after saving the file as a Word .doc?
Both TIFFs are 300dpi CMYK, but are different sizes (the sharp one is smaller).
    Thanks!

when I save my Pages file as Word '.doc' format (using the standard 'save copy as' method, OR exporting as .doc) one of the high resolution TIFFs in the file ... Both TIFFs are 300dpi CMYK, but are different sizes
The thing is that .DOC is the file format for versions of Microsoft Word which were developed to work with the Windows GDI Graphics Device Interface, the counterpart of QuickDraw in Mac OS 9.2 and lower.
Neither GDI nor QuickDraw are capable of colourant formats other than RGB. There are tried and true ways around this in prepress,
    1. do not pick TIFF, JPEG, PICT or BMP file formats that are processed by GDI and QuickDraw, but pick a file format that is not processed by GDI and QuickDraw (EPS, PDF).
    2. pick a colour managed path through GDI and QuickDraw so that CMYK tagged with a source ICC colour space is converted into some form of colour managed RGB which in turn can be converted back into some form of colour managed CMYK for whatever printing condition is to be chosen (whether by a third party driver installed in the OS or by other means).
There are other possibilities, as Peter mentioned, but transparency isn't supported in GDI and DOC any more than CMYK is supported. And to go back to the beginning, why in the world are you trying to work in CMYK when you in all likelihood have no knowledge of the ink limit, graybalance and paper for the intended printing condition? You should be working in ICC colour managed RGB.
