Basic 3D Backface in Motion 2

I'm trying to apply a backface to a Basic 3D filter. I know how to do it in a typical situation, but I've got the Basic 3D filter on the edge of an object (so it sort of opens a door on its hinges rather than just flipping the door in the middle). The texture that I apply as the backface is applied to the center of the 3D filter, not the center of the object. Does that make any sense? Does any body know how to apply a backface to center of the object and not the center of the filter? Any workarounds?
Thanks!

  • How to do Motion 2's Basic 3D effect in Motion 3

I found it quite useful in Motion 2's Basic 3D to make 2-side images that I could easily flip around. For instance, I could put the front of a coin on the front, and then the back side could be pasted in to show when the object flips over. What's the simplest way to make this 2-sided image with Motion 3's more complex set of 3D features?

Put the two objects in a group, then rotate the group around it's X or Y axis. The lower object will show up on the back.

  • Problems with Basic 3D Filter in Motion 2.0.1

    Hello helpful people,
when I apply the Basic 3D filter to a layer the layer becomes a little fuzzy. With no settings on the filter changed. If I put the filter on only a piece of the middle of the timeline my object goes from sharp to fuzzy and then sharp again.
Also with the filter on, it seems to be about 1 pixel higher in size.
Any workaround around that? Or other ideas?

  • [basic] the scope of motion control in LV

I am a very beginner in motor control part.
Very recently, some motor need to use some proper control board in control unit or PC.
If so, what is the scope of the motion control driver (library) in LabVIEW developement version?
    Some restricted motor type?
What other instrument should I prepare to use the driver?
What's the difference between this type(PC or control board) and NI motion controller?
Any materials for beginner should be welcomed.

For getting started with NI Motion Control I recommend this website. Here you will find tutorials, webcasts, selection guides and much more.
In general NI Motion solutions are not limited to specific motor types or applications. Depending on your application requirements you can select between motion control plugin-boards or software defined systems based on real-time hardware and/or FPGA technology.
Please have a look at our web resources first and post any specific questions to the forum.

  • Motion playback on production monitor through AJA Kona LH card looks nasty.

    Okay, so here's the deal.
We have recently invested in some shiny new things to equip an edit suite - a Kona LH card and a Production Monitor. Along with a Sony HDV/DVCAM VTR. Specs of our set up are listed at the bottom.
Pretty much all of the work we have done in the past has been non-braodcast - we're looking to improve workflow and quality of final output. We work mainly with Final Cut Pro, but also with Motion.
We have connected everything and have marvelled at how much of a difference it makes having a proper video preview from Final Cut (v. 6) as opposed to what we had before - firewire to camera to TV... Of course we were expecting this marked improvement.
We were also expecting the key benefit of a video preview output from Motion.
Now. We do get a video output through to the production monitor from Motion. But this is where it gets weird.
When we do a preview of an animation, it looks really shoddy.
As a test case, let's take a basic text crawl in Motion 3.
Static graphics look great, but when you play motion graphics, the image quality is really jaggy and nasty. (even at full frame RAM preview, best render settings, full res - all of these options are apparently properly selected).
So we did some test exports. Usually we would export animations in the Animation Codec, with an alpha if intended for compositing on top of a video track in FCP... we tried a bunch of different formats - animation, photoJpeg, DVCPRO 50, Aja 2Vuy, Uncompressed 10bit...
All these play from Quicktime on the computer monitor just fine, but when playing from the AJA TV app to the production monitor, again the same problem. And then when you bring them into Final Cut, the same problem, even when you match the sequence settings and field order to the source video ...
In effect, it seems that anything generated in Motion just doesn't want to look nice on our Production Monitor - even when imported into FCP.
HOWEVER - if you drop the Motion PROJECT into an FCP timeline, all is fine!
We know the AJA card and the Monitor are working because of this fact, and because when you generate titles from within FCP itself - the same text scroll, for instance, it looks perfect!
I have also found when working with old composited animations originating from AE that you can get FCP to pump these through to the production monitor beautifully when working in an uncompressed sequence setting - or in an Animation sequence setting. (For an Animation sequence to go the the production monitor from FCP, the Video Playback option in A/V Settings needs to be set to "AJA Kona 625i25 RGBA" instead of "AJA Kona 625i25 8 bit" or 10 bit).
The above point could be of relevance...? The only Video Output options from Motion or AE that apply to our setup and monitor are "625i25 RGBA" and "625i25 DV-RGBA" ... are we supposed to have more options?
In short, we could work around these issues - it just doesn't seem right however that we can't get a decent external preview from Motion. A big reason for upgrading our setup was faithful video previews of animations from these programs...
We also can't understand why exports from these animation programs can look so poor. I can export a video with a text crawl generated from a DV PAL Final Cut Project with DV Pal compression settings and it looks massively better playing through AJA TV than our test Motion exports.
    It just isn't right.
    Please help. Pretty please.
For reference, here are the specs of our set up:
Apple Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
    4.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    Equipped with Kona LH Card
JVC TM-H1750CG Production Monitor fed via SDI (have also tried component, to no avail)
    It just isn't right.
Please help. Pretty please. Many thanks in advance.

  • NI Motion Assistant LabVIEW Code Generation Error

Hello, the following is my current setup:
    NI PCI-7334 motion control board
    NI UMI 7774 splitter board
    3 x NI P70530 Drives
    3 x NI CTP12ELF10MAA00 Stepper Motors
3 x Power supply units for drives
    LabVIEW 2010
    NI Motion Assistant 2.6
    Motion and Automation Explorer 4.7
I have built a three axis motion system that I am trying to configure with labview. After verifying that everything was set up correctly, I opened MAX, updated the firmware to my motion control board, and intitialized the controller. Since then, I have created many basic programs using the Motion Assistant Software to test the movement of my device. Everything works fine while using the Motion Assistant software (I have three axis movement, multidirectional control, and can perform various straight line and arc moves). My problems begin when I try to use the code generation feature.
When trying to use the code generation feature to output a labview diagram, I run into a problem where a dialog box pops up and says "Find the vi named ...."
Some examples of the names that come up are: Configure Vector Space.flx, Vector Space To Control.flx, Motion Error Handler.flx.
To be clear the program in Motion Assistant that I am trying to export to LabVIEW code is composed of two individual steps. One that tells X,Y, and Z motors to move forward 25 revolutions, and one step that tells them to move backwards 25 revolutions.
I have made many other programs in Motion Assistant that run fine, but I always receive similar errors when trying to use the code generation feature to export to LabVIEW. Is there something that I can do to solve my problem?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Joe,
I am using Ni-Motion Assistant 2.6, Ni-Motion 8.1, and Motion and Automated Explorer version 4.7.
The code I posted is supposed to tell Axis 1 to move 40 revolutions at 400 rpm. It works fine in Ni-Motion Assistant but when I try to generate a LabVIEW diagram I receive the following error, "Find the VI named 'Motion Error Handler.flx'". I have had it search my directory, as well as the disk that I installed both LabVIEW and Ni-Motion but no luck. Thanks for your help.

  • Motion 3 quits "ozone plugin"

So I'm working in motion 3 and all of a sudden it quits and tells me the 'ozone plugin' could have caused this. I have been searching online for hours and have found that this is a common issue with motion. I have tried many different things. I have downloaded all the updates and I even uninstalled and reinstalled. Still no luck. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Here's a little bit dated but still accurate info:
It appears that there is no one single, simple solution so I’m attempting here to list what seem to be the most likely fixes. If you get this dialog, read through these and try them out.
One cause of this issue: if you upgraded from Tiger to Leopard using the Archive and Install method, you are now missing a critical framework that didn’t get copied over in the installation process. This is Apple’s fault, not yours, but you have to deal with it. Here’s how it’s described by “specialcase” on Apple’s Motion forum:
“The Leopard Migration Assistant appears to copy over all the Pro Apps-dependent frameworks in the /Library directory, but it does not copy over the contents of /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks, which is where Helium gets installed. Since Helium would then be lost in an "Archive and Install" OS installation, you'd need to get it back.”
First, make sure it’s actually fixable. It’s possible for anyone to force Motion to crash and come up with this error message by using large vector artwork. For the details, see this article by Peter Wiggings. Thanks to Peter for all his hard work to figure this out.
If you aren’t using large vector artwork and you are still getting this message, you can read through this long, convoluted thread, or I’ve gone through and picked out the most relevant parts and listed them here.
    Method #1:
Just download the ProAppsUpdate2007-02 and install. If this fixes things, great. Works for some folks, not for others. See below on where to get it. If it doesn’t work, proceed with Method 2 or Method 3.
    Method #2:
Basically, you have reinstall Motion in a very specific way, and THEN reinstall the updates.. It’s CRITICAL that before reinstalling your first delete your current Motion application files, AS WELL AS the library receipts located in Root/Library/Receipts - just the Motion.pkg and the update files, as pictured above. Note: you don’t have to reinstall all of Final Cut Studio, nor do you have to reinstall the Motion content - just the application. It doesn’t take very long at all.
After you reinstall Motion 3.0.0 from your disk, you should run the updates IN THIS ORDER:
    1. ProAppsUpdate2007-01
    2. ProAppsUpdate2007-02
    3. Motion302Update
You have to install the first two ProApps update before applying ANY of the .0.2 FCS updates.
You can find the ProApps updates here. You’ll need your Final Cut Studio serial number. IMPORTANT: if running the updater doesn’t work, trying opening the installer package and running the updates individually.
    1) Manually download the ProApps updates.
    2) Right-click to open the contents of ProApplications update.
    3) Open the "Contents" folder and find the "Packages" folder.
    4) Try installing each of the 6 packages. Not all of the packages can be installed:
    AppleHDVCodec.pkg: not allowed
    AppleProRes422.pkg: allowed
    Helium.pkg: allowed
    IMXCodec.pkg: not allowed
    PluginManager.pkg: allowed
    ProAppsEffects.pkg: allowed
If you are running Motion 3, you may only need the 2007-02 package.
If you are running Motion 2, then try the same fix, but by downloading just the 2007-01 package instead.
    Method #3:
Here is another way without doing a complete re-install:
    1. Pay for and download Pacifist.
    2. Put your Final Cut Studio install dvd in the drive.
    3. Drag the installer icon onto the pacifist icon.
    4. Click "skip" for all the media content. You will see a list of all the install packages on the DVD.
    5. Select this one: "Contents of MotionGroup".
    6. Click the "install" button in the upper left of the window.
    7. Only the motion installer will execute and replace all the frameworks, components etc in your library.
The reason that a fresh install does not work, is that the installer assumes an "upgrade" and leaves the original files
in the various library directories alone. These files must be replaced and pacifist will save you about a day's worth of re-installs.
Finally, the newer Prokit update (4.5) in combination with Motion 3.0.2 seems to be fixing this problem for many people.
    But now Compressor doesn’t work!!!
If your Motion fix broke Compressor, you’ll need to follow the directions in this Apple article. The fix involves reinstalling BOTH Motion and Compressor. Yes, a pain. But it doesn’t take that long.

  • Third Party Motion Tracking: Importing?

    Hi there,
Recently, I came across a free 3D motion tracker (on Mac, called Icarus) which also does a great job on 2D tracking. It does a point-based tracking, just like programs like After Effects, making it perfect for precise position and rotation tracking.
So, obviously, I started thinking of ways to copy the tracking data into Pre. We know that within Pre, you can copy the keyframe data from any clip to an other clip. But something I couldn't figure out, is how that keyframe-structure then looks on the clipboard. Does it even get copied to the clipboard? Or does Pre use an internal variable to store this copy-paste data?
I wasn't able to figure this out. I tried copying full clip info to a basic texteditor, only the motion data, even corner pin data and keyframes; non of it worked.
So all I actually want to know, how can you be able to use an external source to paste keyframe information into Pre?
A long evening of Googling really didn't get me any further.
This tracker in particular (Icarus), can export to both 'Human Readable' documents and After Effects keyframe data. Since almost any free motion tracker is capable of exporting to After Effects keyframes, I can make an After Effects keyframe to Premiere Elements keyframe converter (web-based), if necessary.
I hope someone can help me any further on this!
    Thanks,
    Oscar

Thanks for that reply, but I either I didn't understand your reply or I wasn't being clear.
I don't have After Effects. All I have is Premiere Elements, in which I want to do some basic, yet precise motion tracking. In Pre, the tracking is simply not precise enough or it can't even find an 'object' where I just want to track a single point.
So luckily, I found the seperate Motion Tracker application which does a perfect job at the tracking. It can export the keyframe information into an After Effects format (that's why I mentioned AE in the first place ).
Now the point is: how do I copy that keyframe information into Premiere Elements?
Which brings up an other question: what keyframe-format does Premiere Elements use when you copy keyframes from one clip to an other?
I hope this makes my question more clear.

  • Urgent: How to tween motion guide?

    Hi,
Basically, I have this motion guide set up with a ball on it. The ball travels along the motion guide as I want, but I need the motion guide to move as well. When I tween the motion guide, the ball no longer moves across the guide.
I have a background that I want to scroll from right-left to make it look like the ball is moving.
I want the path to move at the same speed as the background to so the ball moves along the background
    How can I do that?
Here are the project files so you can have a look at what I want. If you could do what I want for me that would be awesome!

Animating the path will break the timeline tween as you have already seen.  What you need to do is place the entire animation you have now inside a movieclip and tween that movieclip in the opposite direction of the ball motion.  To place it into a movieclip, select all the frames in the timeline, right click and choose copy frames.  Create a new Movieclip symbol, right click the one keyframe in it and choose paste frames.

  • What happened to Basic 3D?

Just upgraded to Motion 3.0 and I'm having trouble with older projects using the Basic 3D filter from Motion 2.
Although I can't find the filter in the library anymore, it does show in upgraded older project. The problem : the objects (titles) the filter is applied to now appear blurry... and it has nothing to do with the render settings in FCP, it shows in Motion directly aswell.
Is this a knwon issue? Is there a workaround?

OK, finally found what was wrong... Interesting...
In their final position, the titles were scaled up over 100%... OK but in Motion 2 they were still sharp enough for what I needed.
Seems like the interaction between the Basic 3D filter in Motion 3 (not available in the library but still present in older projects that used it) and overscaling made the titles a lot more blurry than they used to be in Motion 2.

  • ICal to do items not available on ipod touch

    Why?
The ipod touch is a PDA - mini computer. An amazing piece of technology, yet it fails in one of the main reasons people have a PDA... a to do list to have on the run (yes, I know about notes, but it's a sloppy way to organize "to do things" and it adds an extra step to transfer it back to iCal. I have mobile me and sync all my computers, yet I can't locate to do items on the ipod touch.
If it is available, then please help me find a way to make it work (I went to an Apple store and the genius bar tech could not find a way to see ical to do items on the ipod touch).
If it is truly unavailable on the ipod touch, I would like to know which genius at Mac/Apple boned this obvious feature up? Or the reason and logic of this feature's exclusion... since the ipod touch can basically do everything from motion sensing for video games to web browsing.

"If it is truly unavailable on the ipod touch"
It is truly not a feature of the ipod touch.
" I would like to know which genius at Mac/Apple boned this obvious feature up? Or the reason and logic of this feature's exclusion."
Yeah, yeah. I doubt that one employee at Apple has done this. Every product does not do everything. This is obviously a low priority and based on the success of this product, it seems the customer base thinks that the ipod touch is a strong product.
I seriously doubt that Apple is going to explain to you why they have not included this feature.
Would knowing why ( or who made the decision) really make you stop complaining or wanting the feature?

You can see the outlining effect at 00:03 in this video.

Oh - that's just the basic "Edges" effect in Motion. I set it up for you and you can download it here:
    http://sight-creations.com/fxexchange/Edges.zip.
To install, unzip the download, move the Edges folder into /Users/YourUserName/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects/Basics/
You will want to color correct the clip and set the saturation to 0, otherwise you'll get color outlines in places. It will also work best if the subject has been green screened as in the video you referenced.

  • Making an Animation

Hi Eveyone...I installed Adobe Flash CS5.5 a couple of days back...Trying to learn a few basic tricks such as motion tween (messed up things with the bone tool though)..Well the problem is, a friend of mine made a 3D drawing in Solid Works(a modelling software). It is a sort of box, now he wants me to make a flash animation for the box which starts from a sheet of paper and folds into a box and then the camera zooms out...
Now i have no idea how to do that..jpg file can be made and imported to flash...but as it will be an imported file how can it be manipulated to achieve the final task....taking screen shots of the box at various stages of solid works can be done and then played all together in flash baut it would be very tiresome and time consuming...
I dont want anyone to make it for me just guide me what tools and tutorials to look at.
Help is much needed and appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Here's one way you may accomplish animation.  I replied to another thread about something similar and this seemed to help them.  Kind of the same idea you were getting at by taking screen shots at various positions, let the 3D software do the animaiton for you:
    1. Use the 3D modeling software to render about every 3 frames of the animation to reduce file size (3 works pretty well for smooth motion) (render to a file format that supports alpha, like .tga)
    2. pull those frames into photoshop and use the alpha information from those frames to extract the "object" from the background (so you end up with just the animation object, no background ) for each frame placing each frame on its own layer in photoshop.
    3. save the .psd and then import the .psd into flash (make sure during import to have flash put the layers as keyframes, not layers)
    4. drag the newly created movieclip onto the stage and play.
This creates some pretty smooth 3D animation that you can interact with the movieclip.  the file gets a little large because of the sequential images but with carefull consideration of the amount of frames you need you can get by with some reasonable file sizes.  One thing I have found on some animations is that the imported .psd files in flash seem to have some jaggy edges on the individual frames.  I have corrected this problem by saving the .psd layers out to individual .png files and then importing these .png files into flash and removing the imported .psd frames, really just replacing the imported ones with the new, cleaner, .png files, kind of a pain, but worth the quality i think (you can export the layers of a .psd file under file - scripts - export layers to files), really easy.
I'm assuming your friends software can render out sequential images of his animation, render out the frames of the animation to individual frames and then apply the same process as I've outlined above.  Good luck.

  • Installing iLife 08 previously uninstalled elements after selective install

Don't ask me why, but I installed only some of the applications (iPhoto, iWeb) when I upgraded to iLife 08. Now, when I try to custom install/add the previously uninstalled elements (iDvd, iMovie, etc.) from the installation Disk - nothing happens (won't install). Is there anything I can do to install the remaining applications? Right now, I'm stuck with only two of the 08 applications. The rest are the 06 versions.

    Hi, 1st the bad news...
According to Apple's system requirements iMovie '08 requires at least a PowerPC G5 1.9 GHz or an Intel Processor. G4s are not supported, though Apple sold its last G4-based Computers (iBook G4) 14 months before the release of iLife '08. However, a system hack enables iMovie 7.1 or higher to run on a PowerPC G4.

The good news is that almost everbody likes iMovie 06 HD better anyway...
iMovie 08 was criticised due to a drastic abandonment of some iMovie HD 6 features. New York Times reviewer David Pogue said "iMovie ‘08 is an utter bafflement...[it] is incapable of the more sophisticated editing that the old iMovie made so enjoyable...All visual effects are gone—even basic options like slow motion, reverse motion, fast motion, and black-and-white. • Installing iLife '08 on a G4 iBook

This iBook has a 1 GHz processor, 1.25 GB of RAM, lots of free space, and is running OS X 10.4.11, all seemingly within the system requirements for iLife '08. When I try to install iLife '08, a message comes up that iMovie won't install because it needs an Intel processor. The installation proceeds, but after it gets to Writing Files 7%, it quits, saying there was an error. I first tried installing iPhoto, which is all I want, and after it didn't work I tried again to install the whole package, minus iMovie. No luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
