Basic questions on InDesign server

Hi All,
I'm studying InDesign server and have some basic doubts which are given below:
(1) I've already developed using JS/VB.net, can I directly use those tools directly in InDesign server without modifying anything?
(2) How to practice with InDesign server, since I didn't find any trial version of InDesign server?
(3) Since InDesign server not having any UI, how we an run, any basic ideas?
Thanks,
Praveen

1. That depends on what you have developed... User interface elements are no good in server code, for example.
2. I guess the best way would be to become an Adobe partner http://partners.adobe.com/.
But: there is a trial version if InDesign Server: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=indesign_server
3. InDesign server and desktop are essentially the same. Primarily I would suggest developing on the desktop version.
Logging to file, and starting InDesign Server with a console open are two ways of debugging on the server.

  • Very basic question: Flash Media Server vs. embedding flash video

    I'm hoping this is a quick easy question to answer:
    What is the difference between Flash Media Server and simply
    using a freeware Flash media player (like Flowplayer
    http://flowplayer.org/) that
    uses XML playlists to embed your Flash videos on a website?
    What are the advantages to Flash Media Server and how does
    something like Flowplayer not address issues that FMS can?
    Thanks in advance!
    Erik

    In a nutshell flowplayer delivers the video through your web
    browser. It does this via http protocol (port 80) and progressive
    download on any web server
    Progressive download finds the video on the server and plays
    it back through the player as it is being downloaded. 2 important
    things to take from this are 1, the video is being downloaded to
    the clients hard drive, at the end of the playback they will have a
    copy of your video that they can do whatever they like to and
    repost it somewhere else. 2, It plays back as it downloads, meaning
    if I'm viewing a 10 minute video from your site and want to skip
    ahead to the middle or end I have to wait for the whole video to
    download before viewing those segments. Your web host by the way
    will love you for progressive download because it will appear as
    though your transfer rate has gone through the roof. Once the
    request for the video is made there is no turning back, the client
    gets the whole thing whether they watch it or not.
    Flash media server uses the rtmp protocol. This protocol is
    an open socket protocol through port 1935. This is a two way street
    essentially. When the user views a video using FMS they basically
    get only enough of the video to keep the connection open and
    satisfy the required buffer to assure clean playback. The bytes of
    info that carry the video only go to the users memory, not the hard
    drive. This allows the user to jump back and forth around in the
    movie without having to wait for the whole thing to download.
    Hope that helps.

  • Very basic questions about JSP server and plug-in.

    Hi all,
    I am wondering what are other ways to make use of the JSP script on a server running normal Apache without changing it to Tomcat. Is there a plug-in version of JSP for Apache that will enable JSP? I am looking for something like PHP plug-in, which is quite generic. They even have a php.exe that OHTTP (a great shareware Win32 web server) can call to run PHP. Is there such thing along this line with JSP on Win32 or Linux? Thanks!

    You need a jsp/servlet engine, and in effect, Tomcat is the "plug-in" you described. Tomcat has basic web server functionality built in, so it can run stand-alone, but it's most commonly used with a robust web server like Apache. You don't have to "change it" to Tomcat - you just configure Apache to forward specific urls (anything ending in *.jsp, for example) to Tomcat.

  • Basic Questions on InDesign- need some help...

    New to Adobe.
    After two years of work, I just introduced a new enhanced interactive iBook for the iPad on robotics. Get To Know Robots
    I built it in word & Apple Author for iBooks.
    I want to release on other tablets.
    What Adobe software/products should I use to build/layout and include DRM? Is InDesign the best?
    Thanks!

    Until some of the Indesign Mac users chime in, let me tell you about my experience using Indesign to publish an ebook in Kindle. The learning curve for Indesign is a bit steep. Is not as intuitive as probably some of the Mac products. But once you know your way around it you'll enjoy all its features. In terms of interactive features, I'll let more experienced users to step in . The book I published in Kindle had just the basic layout for a book with images, hyperlinks, interactive TOC, nothing fancy. There’s a Kindle Plugin for Adobe Indesign that will export your book directly to Kindle format (mobi file).  It works very well. Maybe you can give a little more information regarding the interactive features you are looking for, so some of the pros here can advise you.

  • Basic Questions from Prospective Lion Server Switcher

    I have five servers I am running right now using Windows 2003 Server and various 3rd party packages.     Several years ago I became a Mac fan, moved all of my client based stuff to Mac, and now want to start moving my server based equipment to the OSX platform.
    I stopped by my local Apple Store, and they had a version of OSX Lion Server running on a MacMini, but couldn't seem to answer the most basic of questions because as their business people stated "We are not Server Certified" ... they recommended I talk to an outside consultant to get these basic questions answered which seems a little extreme.
    So I'm hoping the group can help.
    (1) I read through most of the Lion Server Advanced Administrative manual.    Lion server appears from the manual to do most of what I need.   However, when I tried doing some of the functions in the manual on the demo Lion Server at the Apple Store, many of the functions I wanted to do did not seemed to either be installed, or their were buttons missing in the Server App.     I do not know if this was a permission level problem, because the account I setup for myself had administrative rights.
    (2) In the mail app, it only appeared you could setup one mail domain.    It appeared you could setup virtual domains and users through the user app, but not through the mail domain itself?
    (3) I could not find any where to enable DNS services.    The manual seems pretty straight forward in turning on DNS, but the Lion Server I saw had no DNS services running, or any way to enable them?
    (4) Same for mailman listserv type function ... manual seems to be straight forward on enabling under the mail server, but again, no signs of the settings or enabling under the mail service.
    (5) Under the mail app, didn't find any way to setup alternative SMTP ports  ( I allow now Port 26 besides the standard Port 25 and SSL ports for my users.) ... I find port 26 gets past most firewalls at hotels etc.      Didn't see any way to control SMTP authentification too.
    (6) Under the Lion Server tech description, it talk about a built in web editor, saw nothing of the kind.
    So did the apple store have a limited install or am I missing something that the lion server manual does not match the capabilities of lion server.
    Love to get a straight answer before purchasing hardware to replace 5 present machines.
    Thank you.
    David

    Thanks for quick response.   Indeed, in hindsight, it appears that they had only installed the Server App, but not the Server Admin tools.
    Unfortunately, I am not a system admin, but I played one on TV <grin>
    All kidding aside ... I'm willing to learn, but would need most of the basics controlled through the GUI ... and then feel comfortable reading up and editting configuration files and running commands from the Terminal.
    On this line, is there good documentation of this, or is this something that you know because you are familiar with Unix?    ie something like the alternate port issue ... is this something in the GUI, or something I would have to edit via Terminal?
    Just trying to make an informed decision before jumping platforms.
    Thanks
    David

  • Is it possible to leverage InDesign Server templates in a custom web app?

    Hi there,
    I am building a custom web app and was hoping to leverage our existing InDesign Server templates within our web app. What I would like to do, is based on user input, show my template with the user's input in the browser. I have looked through the API guides for InDesign Server CS6, but I haven't been able to conclusively find anything that will allow me to use the APIs to call the server, send the data points the template requires, and then get an image back from the server.
    I believe this is possible, I am just not sure how to achieve it! Any ideas or articles that help push me in the right direction would be extremely helpful!
    Thank you!
    Marshall

    Yes it's completely possible. There are two parts to making something like this work:
    1. The scripts themselves. You can generally script InDesign Server and desktop InDesign exactly the way using ExtendScript. So that's the part of the process where your script receives variables and passes them into the template and replaces something you've identified as variable, whether text or an image or something else (perhaps a color theme, etc.). You should get your scripts running on desktop before playing around with server.
    2. The messaging between your web app and the server. Whatever language you are using (i.e. PHP, .Net, Java, Ruby…) there is a way to make a SOAP call to InDesign Server to tell it basically "run this script with these parameters". You should get the "hello world" script running from a SOAP call on the server before using your real variable-driven document.
    The documentation of these things is available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/indesign/sdk.html
    You need to download the InDesign Server SDK (don't worry if you're on CC and it says CS6, almost nothing changed) and the InDesign Scripting SDK. The Server SDK deals with part #2 above, the Scripting SDK with part #1.
    It really isn't that hard. I should warn you, though, that it is addictive and once you do your first one you will become all-powerful and want to do nothing else. :-)
    Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions.

  • Basic question regarding SSIS 2010 Package where source is Microsoft Excel 97-2005 and there is no Microsoft office or Excel driver installed in Production

    Hi all,
    I got one basic question regarding SSIS 2010 Package where source is Microsoft Excel 97-2005. I wanted to know How this package works in production where there is no Microsoft office or Excel driver installed. To check that there is excel driver installed
    or not, I followed steps: Start-->Administrative Tools--> Data Sources(ODBC)-->Drivers and I found only 2 drivers one is SQL Server and another one is SQL Server Native Client 11.0.
    Windows edition is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack-1 and System type is 64-bit Operating System.
    We are running this package from SQL Server Agent and using 32-bit (\\Machine_Name\d$\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe /FILE "\\Machine_Name\d$\ Folder_Name\EtL.dtsx" /CONFIGFILE "\\Machine_Name\d$\Folder_Name\Config.dtsConfig"
    /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E) to run this package. I opened the package and tried to find out what connection we have used and found that we have used "Excel Connection Manager" and ConnectionString=Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data
    Source=F:\Fares.xls;Extended Properties="EXCEL 8.0;HDR=YES"; and source is ‘Excel Source’
    I discussed with my DBA and He said that SSIS is having inbuilt Excel driver but I am not convinced.
    Could anyone please clear my confusion/doubt?
    I have gone through various links but my doubt is still not clear.

    How Can I Get a List of the ODBC Drivers that are Installed on a Computer?

    Thanks Shiven:) If Answer is Helpful, Please Vote

    Hi S Kumar Dubey,
    In SSIS, the Excel Source and Excel Destination natively use the Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider which is installed by SQL Server. The Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider deals with .xls files created by Excel 97-2003. To deal with .xlsx files created by
    Excel 2007, we need the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider. SQL Server doesn’t install the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider, to get it we can install the
    2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components or
    Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable or Microsoft Office suit.
    The drivers listed in the ODBC Data Source Administrator are ODBC drivers not OLEDB drivers, therefore, the Excel Source/Destination in SSIS won’t use the ODBC driver for Excel listed in it by default. On a 64-bit Windows platform, there are two versions
    of ODBC Data Source Administrator. The 64-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator is C:\Windows\System32\odbcad32.exe, while the 32-bit one is C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. The original 32-bit and 64-bit ODBC drivers are installed by the Windows operating system.
    By default, there are multiple 32-bit ODBC drivers and fewer 64-bit ODBC drivers installed on a 64-bit platform. To get more ODBC drivers, we can install the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components or Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable.
    Besides, please note that 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components only install 32-bit ODBC and OLEDB drivers because it only has 32-bit version, but the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable has both 32- bit version and 64-bit
    version.
    If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Basic questions from a new mozaic owner

    I have some very basic questions about how to use the new mozaic 2G mp3 player. I bought the Mozaic because it has a speaker and sleep timer, but I'm finding it to be much harder to use than other mp3 players that I have had (Ipod shuffle, clix etc). This may reflect my failure to look in the right place but I have to say the "help" section isn't much help.
    Here goes:
    . I download podcasts to listen to during my morning run. WMP provides an easy to find place in its program, "recently added," which allows the user to just work with those files. As near as I can tell, Creative makes you wade through all of your tracks. Is there some way to create a file to which "recently added" tracks, or specific tracks, can be dumped? How about automatic tagging of these added files?
    2. I have several thousand pictures on this hard dri've. Apparently, the Mozaic Centrale
    Is going to copy all of them, which strikes me as a waste of space. Is there a way to shut this function off? I couldn't care less if a single photo was added to the centrale program (or whatever it's called). Is it really going to duplicate all of the jpg files?
    3. I have the Zen Stone plus speaker which has served me very well. I had similar problems working with whatever Zen was calling its media player and wound up using WMP instead. I"d like to take a run at using the dedicated Zen media player....
    I apologize for the basic nature of these questions, but the answers weren't obvious to me from the materials I was able to locate.

    what exactly is the model of your Mozaic? Is it EZ 00, EZ 300 or plane ZEN Mozaic?

  • Datamerge crashes (indesign server)

    I am trialing indesign server....
    I have successfully created a js based datamerge using the soap example
    I am now trying to do this programatically (e.g. directly interfacing with the server objects)
    In both C# and VB I am getting a crash everytime I execute the datamerge MergeRecords function.
    Below is the script I am running, with comments, if the doc.DataMergeProperties.MergeRecords("c:/temp/wibble.txt") line is commented out the script will execute fine, uncomment it and the whole thing crashes, including the server, when another function is called afterwards.

    Thanks for the reply!
    I cross posted deliberately as no one had even read the entry in the server forum, you'll see that it is days older, mea culpa for not including the relevant link/hightlighting the cross post.
    To answer your other questions
    I am refering to Indesign COM objects; as you'll see from the code excerpt I have instantiated an app object (app = CreateObject("IndesignServer.Application")) successfully added a template file (doc = app.Open("C:/Adobe InDesign CS5.5 Server SDK/samples/sampleclient-aspnet-soap/files/template2.indd")) assigned the data merge data source (doc.DataMergeProperties.SelectDataSource(ds)) but it then falls down when the actual datamerge is called.
    FYI, I have tried this in C#, vb.net and even classic ASP (vbscript) because of the typeing issues with c# and they all fall down at the same point.
    I have a JSX version of this; this works fine if I pass it Indesign Server using SOAP (I am using the bundled sample soap script at the moment which is in Adobe InDesign CS5.5 Server SDK\samples\sampleclient-aspnet-soap), the datamerge works and the files are created fine.
    I am using 7.5.1 (the trial was downloaded last week).
    I am currently using the "lame" approach (call out using JS and the process the directory containing the files after Indesign has finished); but as the processed files have then to be associated with database records this is driving me mad.
    Hope this expansion is helpful.

  • JS InDesign Server CS2 - Search and Replace

    I am struggling to get a search and replace script to work on InDesign Server CS2.
    This works on my Desktop CS2:
    app.documents[0].search('xxx', false, false, 'yyy');
    but not through InDesign Server CS2.
    Can any one please help.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

    Thanks for all of the replies.
    This situation is that the company I work for has decided to consolidate some of the duties of our graphics departments.  People in one location will be dummying documents for people at another location.
    The paths to the images are UNC paths, which means they're pointing to different shares on different servers.  This cannot be changed.
    Also, the images at either location may not exist until days after the dumming process.
    During the dummying process, the application that's used to build the pages places empty ad boxes (placeholders) on the page.  The placeholders are text frames.
    I don't understand in what way, but the paths to the images are hidden inside the InDesign file.  From the users' standpoint, the placeholders simply display basic information about the ad (customer name, ad number, etc.) and hold the position for the images that will be placed later.
    It is not using script labels to apply the paths.
    So, this is why I describe the problem as needing to do a search and replace inside the InDesign file.
    As I mentioned before, I know this is doable.  I think I now see that the problem problem is figuring out how these hidden paths are being applied in the document.  My only thought was script labels, but this is not the case...

  • Some basic questions on File Adapter

    Hello all,
    I have some basic questions on XI and File Adapter and hope you can help me. Any answer is appreciated.
    1. Can I use NFS transport protocol to poll a file from a machine in the network, which is not the XI? Or do I have to use FTP instead?
    2. If I understand it correctly - when using the FTP-File Adapter, XI has the role of a ftp client. I have to run a ftp server on my distant machine. XI connects to FTP-Server and polls the file.
    Can it also be configured the other way round? The scenario I think of would be: FTP client installed on distant machine, which connects to FTP-Server(XI) and loads up a file. So XI would act as FTP Server.
    I know this works, if I install a ftp Server on the computer my XI runs on, and use the NFS-File Adapter to observe the folder. But I want to know, if I need a second, independant ftp server for this.
    3. And last but not least: When do I need the active ftp mode instead of passive?
    Thanx a lot for your answers!

  • InDesign Server Automation

    I'm looking into purchasing InDesign Server for the document automation features. One feature, Data Merge, would be a tremendous help for our company.
    I'm having some trouble setting it up with a script.
    Here's what I have running, just a basic test.
    var myDocument = app.open(File("C:\\inetpub\\wwwroot\\indesign\\test.indd"));
    with (app.dataMergeOptions) {
    linkImages = true;
    removeBlankLines = false;
    createNewDocument = true;
    documentSize = 100;
    } // (end of dataMergeOptions)
    myDocument.dataMergeProperties.mergeRecords();
    myDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File ("c:\\inetpub\\wwwroot\\indesign\\merged.pdf"));
    myDocument.close ();
    In the file I had it linked to a csv that pulled data but it seems the link has been broken (or out of date according to the error).
    Can anyone help me with what I am doing wrong or even provide a better method?
    I am running the script through PHP via SOAP in IIS running on Windows 2008 R2
    InDesign Server CC 2014

    Thank you for your post Loic.Aigon.
    After I stumbled upon this post javascript - InDesign Script: export to IDML - Stack Overflow I found the option dataMergeProperties.selectDataSource(csv file).
    Here's my updated code, sorry for the missing formatting.
    var myDocument = app.open(File("C:\\inetpub\\wwwroot\\indesign\\test.indd"));
    var myDataSource = File("C:\\inetpub\\wwwroot\\indesign\\test.csv");
    with (app.dataMergeOptions) {
    linkImages = true;
    removeBlankLines = false;
    createNewDocument = true;
    documentSize = 100;
    } // (end of dataMergeOptions)
    myDocument.dataMergeProperties.selectDataSource(myDataSource);
    myDocument.dataMergeProperties.mergeRecords();
    app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File ("/c/inetpub/wwwroot/indesign/merged2.pdf"));
    //myDocument.save(new File("C:\\inetpub\\wwwroot\\indesign\\mergedOutput.idml"));
    myDocument.close ();
    if I run myDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File ("/c/inetpub/wwwroot/indesign/merged2.pdf")); then it tries to merge but throws a warning [link manager Link out of date: file: and links the original csv file it was created with (not my referenced data source file).
    I believe I should merge on the active document and not the original document.
    But if I run app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File ("/c/inetpub/wwwroot/indesign/merged2.pdf")); it throws a javascript error, app.activeDocument is undefined.

  • InDesign Server as a reporting service

    Hi, Im looking for help/guidelines regarding InDesign. I'm a software architect working on a line-of-business application that will eventually require printing about 5 hundred thousand personalized report (of about 20 pages each) over a couple of days (and many other smaller jobs), and my client requires that this job be executed by a third party. Think of the document as a fairly standard financial report printed once a year for each participant. The application is built in .net, backed by a sql database. Once a year, the data is mined, computed, and outputed in a format acceptable by the supplier (who is chosen through a public tendering process).
    So from what I've learned thus far, to be complient with most suppliers, I must use some file format like postscript or eps, and to do this, it looks like InDesign Server might be what I'm looking for.
    So here is what I've figured out so far (and where I will need your help if I'm not making sense) :
    - Create a kind of IDML template using InDesign on a desktop computer
    - in our .net application, modify the IDML for each participant to personalize it (a lot of conditional code to remove sections of text, and inject numbers, etc).
    - Send each (or a batch is feasable) to the InDesign Server to prepare for publishing into postscript/eps files
    - and if feasable, also create a PDF of each because we need to keep a digital version of the document on the client's corporate SharePoint (for legal reasons).
    Is this how InDesign should be used? Am I making any sense?
    Thanks in advance for all the answers.

    Hi, JP43.
      For what it's worth, your question is on the boundary between the scripting forum and the general forum.
    So from what I've learned thus far, to be complient with most suppliers, I must use some file format like postscript or eps,
    This seems a bit peculiar. The obvious format for your document output would be PDF. PostScript and EPS seem weird choices, though certainly conceivable (well, I don't think you can have multi-page EPS files, but you can certainly have 20 EPS files and you can have multi-page PostScript files, but they tend to be output-device specific, though they need not really be).
    What is your supplier doing with the file? Are they a printer? A specialty industry auditor? Or something else? If they're a printer, they should be asking for a PDF, I think.
    Though it's also possible what they want is a less final output format that humans can deal with in other applications, such as Microsoft Word. A lot depends on the workflow. Anyhow, back to the main question:
    and to do this, it looks like InDesign Server might be what I'm looking for.
    Note that it's not a requirement that you use InDesign Server, and at $22,000/license, depending on your volumes, it may make sense to just use InDesign Desktop. The standard InDesign EULA doesn't let you drive its automation remotely, but if you have a human being walk up to a computer and start a script that reads 500,000 input files and produces 500,000 output files, I think that is in compliance.
    Replacing your bullets with numbers:
    1. Create a kind of IDML template using InDesign on a desktop computer2. in our .net application, modify the IDML for each participant to personalize it (a lot of conditional code to remove sections of text, and inject numbers, etc).
    3. Send each (or a batch is feasable) to the InDesign Server to prepare for publishing into postscript/eps files
    4. and if feasable, also create a PDF of each because we need to keep a digital version of the document on the client's corporate SharePoint (for legal reasons).
    #2 is definitely one way to do it. If you are comfortable manipulating the IDML XML in .NET, and it's not important for you to leverage InDesign's object model in your conditions (e.g., you do not need to know how many pages InDesign would set a particular table at, and that does not effect your decisions of what objects to place where), then this is fine.
    If your batch data is fairly simple substitutions, you could use InDesign's Data Merge feature. But that's really just a mail merging feature and it sounds like you have large tables of data and it is probably not sufficient.
    The way I would probably implement it is to write code for InDesign's scripting that starts with a template (INDD or IDML or whatever), and then instructions InDesign to place various items in various places, replace/remove conditional items, etc. This allows you to leverage InDesign's knowledge of how the page is laid out and to make layout-continent adjustments in your script. If you tried to do this in IDML, you would have to replicate InDesign's layout engine in your software which is essentially infeasable and at which point you might as well throw InDesign out the window and just use something like iText to produce a PDF directly.
    That said, #'s 1,3 and 4 are all trivial.

  • Indesign server web service - where is the support to upload a file with the script and download the result?

    Hi,
    I am working on a POC that is supposed to convert indd files to pdf (i.e. using of course the indesign server). Basically I want to call the IDS Web Service (located on a different machine perhaps), pass in the input file, the conversion script and retrieve the result as part of the WebService call?
    Browsing the documentation, examples, etc in the SDK, I couldn't see how the above can be achieved without the client handling the file transfer. Surely I must be missing something ...
    thanks
    Chris

    What do you mean with POC?
    InDesign Server is too precious (i.e. license cost) to waste its time with file transfers.
    For a smaller scale, let a separate process (some http or smb server) on the same server hardware handle the files - so that the InDesign Server can access them on the fastest local volume.
    If you plan for bigger, use a dedicated server for file sharing (your choice of SMB, NFS or whatever), where the input files are prepared by the client process, so that your load balancer can immediately point the next free instance of the InDesign server farm to the file. In that case be prepared for some try and error - high speed file sharing can be tricky with files written from one side not yet visible or incomplete to the other side, locking problems, Unicode file name trouble, unexpected time stamps and so forth.
    Btw, there is also an InDesign Server forum which would be more appropriate for such discussions.

    I have spent some time geting Java automation to work with InDesign, it's not my favorite language but I learned some things that may help and put them into some course content that Adobe should put out shortly; will post here when it is available online.
    Our company, Silicon Publishing, provides general InDesign Server automation training, though we don't have a current offering that specifically targets Java we teach some of the basics of working with Java (many unique techniques!) and could arrange a limited form of training.
    The documentation and samples with the SDK should take you part of the way there: for specific scripts, it has been helpful to us to get things working in an easier-to-write (i.e. JavaScript) script first, then translate such a script to Java, taking into account the unique characteristics of the language and various tactics (outlined in the SDK documentation) to address these.
