Best practices for organizing a large "project" with multiple programmers

should i put everyone in one application? should everyone get their own applcation? my understanding (limited) is the level of granularity for CVS is the application. sounds to me like multiple developers checking the same application in and out would be a disaster. if every developer has there own application what problems will i have deploying. how do i handle my configuration (navigation) diagram? any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have a read through these:

  • Best Practices for Defining NDS Java Projects...

We are doing a Proof of Concept on using NDS to develop non-SAP Java applications.  We are attempting to determine if we can replace our current Java development tools with NDS/WAS.
We are struggling with SAP's terminology and "plumbing" for setting up/defining Java projects.  For example, what is and when do you define Tracks, Software Components, Development Components, etc.  All of these terms are totally foreign to us and do not relate to our current Java environment (at least not that we can see).  We are also struggling with how the DTR and activities tie in to those components.
If any one has defined best practices for setting up Java projects or has struggled with and overcome these same issues, please provide us with some guidance.  This is a very frustrating and time-consuming issue for us.
    Thank you!!

    Hi Peggy,
In Component Model we divide software projects into small components.Components can use other components in well defined manner.
A development object is a part of a component that can be changed or developed in some way; it provides the component with a certain part of its functionality. A development object may be a Java class, a Web Dynpro view, a table definition, a JSP page, and so on. Development objects are always stored as “sources” in a repository.
A development component can be defined as a frame shared by a number of objects, which are part of the software.
Software components combine components (DCs) to larger units for delivery and deployment.
A track comprises configurations and runtime systems required for developing software component versions. It ensures stable states of deliverables used by subsequent tracks.
The Design Time Repository is for versioning source code management. Distributed development of software in teams. Transport and replication of sources.
You can also find lot of support in SDN for the above concepts with tutorials.

    Hello Peggy,
this is my first post but I hope it helps you anyway.
To learn the SAP "language" I additionally used the a SAP Presentation regarding the SAP JDI.
https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/documents/a1-8-4/java development infrastructure real world use webinar.pdf
I think this one is quite useful as an addon to the other links for information you already got. Your name also indicates that your mother-tongue language is German. If so, the german version of the book (Java-Programming with the SAP WAS) is already available for purchase and really useful. Then, you can also use the information provided by the University of Potsdam. They have an introduction about how to setup a track in the SLD and then how to setup SCs.

  • What is the best practice for using the Calendar control with the Dispatcher?

It seems as if the Dispatcher is restricting access to the Query Builder (/bin/querybuilder.json) as a best practice regarding security.  However, the Calendar relies on this endpoint to build the events for the calendar.  On Author / Publish this works fine but once we place the Dispatcher in front, the Calendar no longer works.  We've noticed the same behavior on the Geometrixx site.
What is the best practice for using the Calendar control with Dispatcher?
    Thanks in advance.

Not sure what exactly you are asking but Muse handles the different orientations nicely without having to do anything.

What is the best software for burning a large slideshow with 500 photos and music to DVD?

Are you talking about strictly burning an already put-together slideshow or composing one and then burning it?
My all time favorite slide show maker is Photo to Movie; you can then burn it from there or get it into iMovie and/or iDVD for the "finishing" touch. My favorite burn software is Toast, although you can use iMovie, iDVD, and Finder as well.

  • Best practices for 2 x DNS servers with 2 x sites

I am curious if someone can help me with best practices for my DNS servers.  Let me give my network layout first.
    I have 1 site with 2 x Windows 2012 Servers (1 GUI - 10.0.0.7, the other CORE - 10.0.0.8) the 2nd site connected via VPN has 2 x Windows 2012R2 Servers (1 GUI - 10.2.0.7, the other CORE - 10.2.0.8)  All 4 servers are promoted to DC's and have DNS services
    running.
    Here goes my questions:

DC-01 - NIC IP address for DNS server #1 set to 10.0.0.8, DNS server #2 set to 127.0.0.1 (should I add my 2nd sites DNS servers under Advanced as well? 10.2.0.7 & 10.2.0.8)

The DC's should automatically register in msdcs.  Do not register external DNS servers in msdcs or it will lead to issues. Yes, I recommend all zones to be set to AD-integrated. No need to allow zone transfers as AD replication will take care
of this for you.  Same for mydomain.local.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best Practices for File Organization/Project Explorer

So we are finally getting SCC at my organization to manage our LabVIEW development, and that is good!
Now, we are starting in on discussions about how we should organize our files on disk and how we should use the Project Explorer. When I started here about 3 years ago, I wasn't very familiar with the project explorer, so I read the article at http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/7197. Two of the main things I took away from that article are:
    1. Organize Files in a logical manner on disk. Whatever that is, it is not a flat file structure.
    2. The top level VI should be separate from other source code. Preferably, it should reside in the application folder.
    Push Back Against These Recommendations
Before I was hired, most, if not all LabVIEW development was done utilizing a flat file structure and the top level VI lived with the source code. Since we didn't have a proper SCC, each individual organized files as he saw fit. So I started using the Project Explorer (not even its use is totally accepted right now) and I began follow recommendations 1 and 2 above. I didn't always follow #1 very strictly, but I have been working towards it, and I have always followed #2 religiously.
Since we are starting these discussions on how we should organize files on disk I'm starting to get some push back to following these two recommendations.
The arguments I get in favor of using a flat file structure is that you always know where every file is; including the top-level VI. It is also argued that it is a lot of effort to organize and search for VIs when they all reside in different folders. I think the fear is that by getting "clever" and organizing our files in such a manner we'll make things complicated and we will somehow shoot ourselves in the foot.
The argument I get against separating the top level VI from the rest of the source code is that it:
    (a) Won't be clear where it is (like it is buried within hundreds of VIs). However, it is argued, you can just put a "!" in front of the file name and then it is always the at top of the flat file structure.
    (b) An extension of argument of (a) is that things either look or seem messy when VIs (including top level VI) don't live in a sub-folder and are just hanging out with the Project Explorer file.
    (c) I think there may be some fear of breaking the VI by moving it and altering the dependencies for the VI.
Convincing Others its Good to Follow These Recommendations
So, if I want to follow NI's recommendations, I need to come up with reasons we should follow these recommendations. Also, I should state that I care about following these recommendations because its what NI recommends. They've been around the block a few times and I'm sure there are good reasons why these are best practices. However, I don't think I've given a very compelling case for why these recommendations should be followed.
So I'll tell you all what I think good reasons are for these recommendations and perhaps I can get some feedback or additional support? If I'm crazy for wanting to follow these recommendations maybe someone can point out why I'm crazy.
    (a) Arguments for Following Both
    I. I passed the CLAD a couple of weeks ago, and I have started studying for the CLD. Part of the CLD is following both of these recommendations (see page 6 of http://ftp.ni.com/evaluation/certification/cld/cld_exam_prep_guide_english.pdf). While this isn't a reason in and of itself, it suggests that if it important when being certified it is important in practice!
II. If we hire new developers that are familiar with LabVIEW, they will most likely be familiar with these recommendations, especially if they are certified. That will lead to increased productivity out of the door because they won't have to learn our special way of doing things.
    (b) Arguments for Organized File Structure
    I. Unused VIs are easier to identify and remove. Right now we never remove VIs because we don't know if they are used or not. This leads to a lot of VI bloat.
II. It is hard to know what a specific VIs function is in a flat file structure by looking at the name.
    (c) Arguments for Separating Top Level VI from Source Code
    I. Placing the top level VI is an intuitive place for this VI. As long as the top level VI is the only VI in the application folder there is no mistake it is the top level VI, especially once you open it. This makes it easy for new developers to find the top level VI. I'd argue it isn't very intuitive for new developers to know that a VI in the source code folder that is prefaced with a "!" is the top level VI.
    Summary
So that is what I think so far. Is there anything else I am missing to support following those two recommendations or am I just being inflexible?
    Thanks!

    zenthoef,
As a CLA, I have struggled with file structure over the years.  Here are my recommendations:
    1.  Put the top level VI and the project in the top-level folder.  This makes it very clear where to begin.
    2.  Put the remaining user interface VIs in a separate folder.  Again, it makes it very clear what the functionality of these VIs are.
    3.  If you are using object, put each object in a separate folder.  Place the family of objects in one folder, with each object in a subfolder.
    4.  Keep the remaining VIs either in a single folder.  This can contain a small number of subfolder if your project is large, but too many folders makes it hard to figure out where your VIs are.  For example, you might have a DAQ subfolder, an Analysis subfolder, and a Report subfolder.  But if you had a Test1 folder, a Test2 folder, and you had a VI that was used by both tests, where would it go?  Keep it simple.
    5.  You inferred that it is hard to figure out what a VI does by its name.  That implies that 1) you need better names, and 2) your VIs are too complicated.  A VI should do a single function which can be adequately described by its name.  That VI might be something like Analyze Data.vi, which would contain a bunch more subVIs (like Get 1st Harmonics.vi), but each VI would contain a single function.  You wouldn't save the data to a report in the Analyze Data.vi, for example.
The most compelling reason for following these suggestions is that it is easier to figure out what the code is doing after you haven't looked at it for a while.  Once you have an application that is working and bug free, you shouldn't have to touch the code until you want to add features.  If that is even 6 months later, you will probably have forgotten how the code works.  As a consultant, I have had to update other people's code, and just figuring how where to start can be a challenge.

  • Best Practices for Integrating UC-5x0's with SBS 2003/8?

Almost all of Cisco's SBCS market is the small and medium business space.  Most, if not all of these SMB's have a Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 or 2008. It will be critical, In order for Cisco to be considered as a purchase option, that the UC-5x0 integrates well into these networks.
To that end, I see a  lot of talk here about how to implement parts and pieces of this, but no guidance from Cisco, no labs and no best practices or other documentation. If I am wrong, please correct me.
I am currently stumbling through and validating these configurations myself, Once complete, I will post detailed recommendations. However, it would have been nice to have a lab to follow instead of having to learn from each mistake.
    Some of the challanges include;
    1. Where should the UC-540 be placed: As the gateway for QOS or behind a validated UC-5x0 router/security appliance combination
    2. Should the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server handle DCHP (as Microsoft's documentation says it must), or must the UC-540 handle DHCP to prevent loss of features? What about a DHCP relay scheme?
    3. Which device should handle DNS?
    My documentation (and I recommend that any Cisco Lab/Best Practice guidence include it as well) will assume the following real-world scenario, the same which applies to a majority of my SMB clients;
    1. A UC-540 device utilizing SIP for the cost savings
    2. High Speed Internet with 5 static routable IP addresses
    3. An existing Microsoft Small Business Server 2003/8
    4. An additional Line of Business Application or Terminal Server that utilizes the same ports (i.e. TCP 80/443/3389) as the UC-540 and the SBS, but on seperate routable IP's (Making up crazy non-standard port redirections is not an option).
    5. A employee who teleworks from various places that provide a seat and a network jack, which is not under our control (i.e. a employees home, a clients' office, or a telework center). This teleworker should use the built in VPN feature within the SPA or 7925G phones because we will not have administrative access to any third party's VPN/firewall.
    Your thoughs appreciated.

    Progress Report;
The following changes have been made to the router in support of the previously detailed scenario. Everything appears to be working as intended.
DHCP is still on the UC540 for now. DNS is being performed by the SBS 2008.
Interestingly, the CCA still works. The NAT module even shows all the private mapped IP's, but no the corresponding public IP's. I wouldnt recommend trying to make any changes via the CCA in the NAT module.
    To review, this configuration assumes the following;
    1. The UC540 has a public IP address of 4.2.2.2
    2. A Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 using an internal IP of 192.168.10.10 has an external IP of 4.2.2.3.
    3. A third line of business application server with www, https and RDP that has an internal IP of 192.168.10.11 and an external IP of 4.2.2.4
First, backup your current configuration via the CCA,
    Next, telent into the UC540, login, edit, cut and paste the following to 1:1 NAT the 2 additional public IP addresses;
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.10 25 4.2.2.3 25 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.10 80 4.2.2.3 80 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.10 443 4.2.2.3 443 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.10 987 4.2.2.3 987 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.10 1723 4.2.2.3 1723 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.10 3389 4.2.2.3 3389 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.11 80 4.2.2.4 80 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.11 443 4.2.2.4 443 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.10.11 3389 4.2.2.4 3389 extendable
Next, you will need to amend your UC540's default ACL.
First, copy what you have existing as I have done below (in bold), and paste them into a notepad.
    Then, im told the best practice is to delete the entire existing list first, finally adding the new rules back, along with the addition of rules for your SBS an LOB server (mine in bold) as follows;
    int fas 0/0
    no ip access-group 104 in
    no access-list 104

    One final note - if you need to use the Microsoft Windows VPN client from a workstation behind the UC540 to connect to a VPN server outside your network, and you were getting Error 721 and/or Error 800...you will need to use the following commands to add to ACL 104;
    (config)#ip access-list extended 104
    (config-ext-nacl)#7 permit gre any any
Im hoping there may be a better way to allowing VPN clients on the LAN with a much more specific and limited rule. I will update this post with that info when and if I discover one.
Thanks to Vijay in Cisco Tac for the guidence.

  • Best Practice for Organizing Enterprise Models

We need to migrate our Oracle Designer models (almost 10 years in the works) into OSDM to stay with current design tools. We do not have the option of staying with Designer.
I need to know of any best practices or other documents that describe a way to organize an enterprise model in OSDM. I am coming from years of working with Designer and want to translate the multiple Application Folders in Designer into a similar organization in OSDM. We have 3 COTS packages with 1000's of tables each and many custom applications that use tables from multiple schemes and databases. Our developers like to see all the tables for a single custom application in its own diagram no matter where they come from and the DBA's don't want to wade through several thousand tables to find the handful we need nor have to duplicate table definitions in multiple models. In Designer we have been doing that with Application Folders.
Another area of interest is in the deployment of database objects to multiple databases where the privileges vary from development to production. In the old Designer world this is done via implementations in the DB Admin tab. Can this be done in OSDM?

    Hi Marcus,
Our developers like to see all the tables for a single custom application in its own diagram no matter where they come from and the DBA's don't want to wade through several thousand tables to find the handful we need nor have to duplicate table definitions in multiple models. In >Designer we have been doing that with Application Folders. There are no application folders in data Modeler. You can use subviews to define your subject areas. Subview is crated for each application (folder) during import form Designer repository.

  • Best practice for oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM

Did any one tried/installed Oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM and CRS ?
    What is the best practice?
    1. separate home for CRS, ASM and Oracle Database?
    2. separate home for CRS and same home for ASM and Oracle Darabase?
we set up the test environment with separate CRS, ASM and Oracle database homes, but we have tons of issues with the listener, spfile and tnsnames.ora files. So, seeking advise from the gurus who implimeted/tested the same ?

I am getting ready to install the 10gR2 database software (10gR2 Clusterware was just installed ) and I want to have a home for ASM and another for database as you suggest. I have been told that 10gR2 was to have a smaller set of binaries that can be used for the ASM home ... but I am not sure how I go about installing it. The first look at the installer does not seem to make it obvious...Is it a custom build option?

  • Best practice for moving images between projects?

    Hey all,
I have a project that has an album inside of it. I want to move the album, containing all of the photographs to a new project. If I drag the photos individually to the new project it moves them successfully although they now don't belong to an album in their new project. If I drag the album itself it moves the album and photographs but leaves the photos in the original project as well.
Does anyone have some best practice ideas for this scenario?
Thanks in advance for any help!

As you have discovered if the drop target is the project the images move projects. If the drop target is an album the images show up in the album but do not actually move anywhere. Moving albums does nothing to move masters. So...
Select all of the images in the album. Drag them to the new project and then drag the album to the new project. Simple enough.

  • Best Practices for Backing Up Large (+10TB) Servers?

As we migrate to OS Lion Server, I need to revisit backup scenarios. I'm interested in researching best practices, which may include Time Machine for incrementals but also needs some sort of off-site possibilities (such as tape and then store somewhere else).
(In Snow Leopard, we're having real trouble with BRU (unintelligible) and Roxio's retrospect for our DLT tape backups.)
I would think this would be a great discussion for many to have.

    Mark as answered!

  • What is a best practice for managing a large amount of ever-changing hyperlinks?

I am moving an 80+ page printed catalog online. We need to add hyperlinks to our Learning Management System courses to each reference of a class - there are 100s of them. I'm having difficulty understanding what the best practice is for consistent results when I need to go back and edit (which we will have to do regularly).
    These seem like my options:
Link the actual text - sometimes when I go back to edit the link I can't find it in InDesign but can see it's there when I open up the PDF in Acrobat
Draw an invisible box over the text and link it - this seems to work better but seems like an extra step
Do all of the linking in Acrobat
    Am I missing anything?
Here is the document in case anyone wants to see it so far. For the links that are in there, I used a combination of adding the links in InDesign then perfecting them using Acrobat (removing additional links or correcting others that I couldn't see in InDesign). This part of the process gives me anxiety each month we have to make edits. Nothing seems consistent. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

what exatly needs to be edited, the hyperlink or content or?

  • Best practices for setting up RDS pool, with regards to profiles /appdata

    All,
I'm working on a network with four physical sites and currently using a single pool of 15 RDS servers with one broker. We're having a lot of issues with the current deployment, and are rethinking our strategy. I've read a lot of conflicting information on how
to best deploy such a service, so I'd love some input.
    Features and concerns:
Users connect to the pool from intranet only.
There are four sites, each with a somewhat different local infrastructure. Many users are connecting to the RDS pool via thin clients, although some locations have workstations in place.
Total user count that needs to be supported is ~400, but it is not evenly distributed - some sites have more than others.
Some of the users travel from one site to another, so that would need to be accounted for with any plans that involve carving up the existing pool into smaller groups.
We are looking for a load-balanced solution - using a different pool for each site would be acceptable as long as it takes #4 and #7,8 into account.
User profile data needs to be consistent throughout: My Docs, Outlook, IE favorites, etc.
Things such as cached IE passwords (for sharepoint), Outlook settings and other user customization needs to be carried over as well.
As such, something needs to account for the information in AppData/localroaming, /locallow and /local between these RDS servers.
Ideally the less you have to cache during each logon the better, in order to reduce login times.
I've almost never heard anything positive about using roaming profiles, but is this one of those rare exceptions? Even if we do that, I don't believe that covers the information in <User>/AppData/*  (or does it?), so what would be the best
way to make sure that gets carried over between sessions inside the pool or pools?
The current solution involves using 3rd party apps, registry hacks, GPOs and a mashup of other things and is generally considered to be a poor fit for the environment. A significant rework is expected and acceptable. Thinking outside the box is fine!
I would relish any advice on the best solutions for deployment! Thank you!

  • Best practices for a development/production scenario with ORACLE PORTAL 10G

    Hi all,
we'd like to know what is the best approach for maintaining a dual development/production portal scenario. Specially important is the process of moving from dev. to prod. and what it implies in terms of portal availability in the production environment.
I suppose the best policy to achieve this is to have two portal instances and move content via transport sets. Am I right? Is there any specific documentation about dev/prod scenarios? Can anybody help with some experiences? We are a little afraid regarding transport sets, as we have heard some horror stories about them...
Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

It would be ok for a pair of pages and a template.
I meant transport sets failed for moving an entire pagegroup (about 100 pages, 1Gb of documents).
But if your need only deals with a few pages, I therefore would direclty developp on the production system : make a copy of the page, work on it, then change links.
