Best way to present mockups to clients

I have been wondering what the best way is to present FW mockups to clients. With only a single client, one on one with a laptop is fine; however, with several around a conference table, it becomes very awkward. I have considered buying a projector, but these do not really do justice to the graphics and are subject to lighting, etc. Plus they are expensive and require a screen, etc....
What are your methods?

Yes, I usually send a flattened jpeg or something beforehand. However, I recently had an unpleasant experience in which the client essentially wanted to redesign from scratch, and was oblivious to the concept of agreeing on a predetermined design scheme. Eventually I just walked out and cut my losses.
How do you avoid this sort of thing; i.e. when the client attempts to "use" you, the designer, simply to implement some sort of amateurish and hideous rubbish of their own "design"?
Not meeting face to face is perhaps the best way!

  • Best way to present data?

    Hi,
This is more of a design issue rather than a technical one, but I can't work out the best way to present this data but I thought someone here would have a good idea.
I want to graph with a line chart the capital growth of investments over time. I need to represent the initial capital (say $200,000). Then each quarter I need to chart the capital growth. ie. Q1 +$10,000 = $210,000, Q2 -$5,000 = $205,000, Q3 +$25,000 = $230,000 etc.
The quarterly profit/loss figures (ie +10,000, -5,000, +25,000 in the example above) are coming from the totals of other charts, but that shouldn't make a difference to the design/charting.
I want to do this as neatly as possible as the table & chart are going to be shown on an executive summary page.
I have tried a couple of ways but keep tripping over myself making it super complicated when I'm sure it doesn't have to be.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!
    Stuart

Stuart, since nobody else seemed to wait to give it a go, I'll pipe in. Not knowing your experience level, I might be giving you stuff you already know. Sorry if that's the case.
I do think it will be simpler if you create an intermediary table and hide it behind your chart. I'm going to assume you're only going to need to look at 4 quarters. I'm also assuming there's only one investment to chart. Our table will need 1 header column and 1 header row. 5 total columns (including header) and 3 total rows (including header).
    I labeled the cells 2 - 5 of the header row "Q1" through "Q4"
I labeled A2 (the second row of your header column) $200,000 -- your initial investment base.
B2 through E2 should refer to the cells showing the gain/loss for the specific quarter. According to your example, the data shown should be $10,000, -$5000, $25,000 and whatever Q4 provides -- I put in -$40,000 to illustrate how an investment loss will show. Set them up as references (i.e. "=Sheet 2 :: Table 1 :: B2") so they'll update automatically.
Format rows 2 and 3 as currency with 0 decimal places.
Now put this formula in cell B3:
    =SUM($A$2:B$2)
and then propagate that down the rest of the row (click on the little bubble in the lower right of the cell and drag it across the row). The following fields should become $205,000, $230,000, and $190,000 (based on my Q4 figure).
With those same cells highlighted, click on charts and line charts for the basic chart. I do recommend using the inspector to change the Y axis Min and Max from "automatic" to values equidistant from your investment base (in this case, $200,000). I chose $240,000 and $160,000. Sadly, I'm not aware of any way to automate the handling of these values.
Now either place this table behind the graph, behind the original table, or slide it off to another page that you will not print.
If this was too basic, let me know where you want to go from here; if I glossed over something you need more info on, let me know.

  • What is the best way to present favorite photos for a group of people

What is the best way to present your favorite photos for a group presentation?? I use iPhoto library. I also have Aperture downloaded on my iMac. Not too familiar with Aperture.  It is for a milestone birthday.

I think it's easiest to work from iPhoto. When I had to do a similar presentation for a birthday bash, I loaded the picts from my camera and some from my computer into iPhoto on a relative's MacBook Pro avalable at the site. It did not take a lot of time or trouble.
iPhoto allows fairly easy options for presenting the slide show , including various transitions and putting a sound track underneath.
Regardless of whether the presentation was or wasn't  less elegant than what some more expensive software could do, the attendees loved what we did for that bash.
Never used Aperture so I don't know what it can do. You could ask in the Aperature forums here:

  • Best way to present 1.55:1 aspect ratio on DVD?

We have two French movies to release on DVD which have been supplied as 4:3 masters in 1.55:1 widescreen.
I've re-formatted them in Final Cut Pro to lose the black bars and have made them 1.55:1 on an anamorphic 16:9 timeline.
On a 16:9 TV they display as 'pillarboxed'; with black bars down the sides. Is this the best way to present this 'awkward' aspect ration on DVD?
Would love to have some feedback on this. Is there a way you could do a 14:9 DVD for example, as this would be a near perfect match for 1.55:1.
    G5, dual 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't know why you're getting all this advice to release anything - that's not actually 4:3 or 1.37:1 (aka Academy Ratio) - without anamorphic enhancement in 2007. Maybe it's the lack of a real DVDSP update that's made us all lazy.
Personally, I would try not to scale your 4:3 master in an anamorphic timeline in FCP. Instead, make use of Compressor 2 (or later) and Frame Controls to do the upscaling whenever possible.
I had to do what you're asking once, but for a 1.66:1 project. Based on that, here's what I'd recommend:
    Create a new 4:3 sequence
(Optional) Alter the background of your Canvas to either of the Checkboard patterns
On V1, drop in a Color Matte and adjust it's color to strongly contrast with your footage
On your Color Matter, drop in a Widescreen Matte and adjust it to 1.78:1
Place your 4:3 master on V2 and scale it down until it fits within the frame created by the Color Matte on V1. I'm guessing about 85% or so?
    Disable V1
Instead of rendering and exporting a QT movie, to maintain the highest quality, I'd suggest marking off a key portion (perhaps no longer than 2 minutes), then File > Export > Using Compressor
In Compressor, adjust the settings how you like, but be sure to:
Alter the movie to 16:9 (duh!)
Turn Frame Control to Custom and set both Resize and Deinterlace to Better (not Best) and adjust the Anti-Alias and Details settings to, say, 3 and 9, respectively.
In the Geometry pane, adjust top and bottom crop values by 60. If your default is 2 and 4, make it 62 and 64. If it's 0 and 0, make it 60 and 60, etc
Submit your encode. It will take a while (even for 2 minutes, in most cases)
Evaluate your encode for the correct cropping (you might have to go back to FCP and adjust the scale values and/or centering) and whether you need to adjust the Anti-Alias and Details values in Compressor. Or, quite honestly, you might not think this is worth it. However, if this is a disc meant for replication, it usually is.
Personally, it takes me a few passes to get things right (Anti-Alias and Details being the hardest to pin down) but it's always worth it...
Let us know how it goes.

  • Best Way to Change Source System Client

We initially had a ECC source client for BI as 35.  But over time, we suffered with good test data because the ECC team use client 15 and not 35.  We want to change BI 7 to use client 15.  I have created a new source system in RSA1 for Client 15 but when I try to delete client 35 and /or change the source client on a datasource, all the data mappings are deleted!
I would really appreciate any advice or information on the best way to change the source R3 client for Bi without losing data mappings.  Point awarded and much respect
    Warm regards

    Hi,
Yes. There is a way to change the source system without deleting the old system. Please use the T.code BDLS and for more information refer the below link
    Re: Changing a Source System.
OSS note 886102 will also give more information about this.
    Hope it helps.

  • The best way to upgrade j4w on client computers?

    Hi Together
What's the way to upgrade J4W on client computers when the logged in user hasn't administrator permissions?
We are planning the rollout through our central software deploying system. For a later upgrade we wish to use the build-in upgrade procedur from J4W. This option is much easier.
I guess if jabber prompts the window to install an upgrade, a normal user can't do that, because of the missing administrator rights. Is that's true?
How do you that or what's the best practice?
    Thx for help
    greetings Phil

I'm pretty sure Jabber for Windows requires local admin rights for both the initial install and any updates.  Modern Windows apps are getting past this need by installing a wrapper exe in the admin-protected Program Files locations while installing the core app bits in user-level places like %appdata%, but I don't believe Jabber is on that bandwagon yet.  Modern apps that take that approach can be updated without admin rights (and also note that this plays very nicely with most antivirus programs too).  i think the native Jabber "update" mechanism is more of a notification tool than an updater.  You're provider a URL, and telling the client an update is available, but the end user is still in the driver's seat on doing that upgrade (which they're running with their own rights on the local machine).
That said, if your end users don't have local admin rights, you're probably stuck using your central deployment tools for the MSI.

  • Best way to present data on iPhone

    All,
    I have the following data:
    Vital Signs | date 1 | date 2 | date 3
    Weight | 200lbs | ... | 210lbs
    Temperature | 97.3 | ... | ....
if the data looks like that, in your opinion, what's the best way to put it for viewing on the iphone???
    Here's what Im thinking:
    Vitals
    Weight
    Date 1 201 lbs
    Date 2 ....
    Date 3 210 lbs...
    Temperature
    Date 1 97.3
    Date 2 ...
    Date 3 ....
AS you can see, that's going to be a HUGE table view in the iphone.... what do you think about it???
    thanks !!

Any of KT's suggestions would give you a killer presentation. However I don't know how to program any of them without either a major upgrade of my skills or a 3rd party library. So I might consider some lo-tech solutions as well.
Customers who grew up on spreadsheets might be quite happy to scan data in that format, so you might consider making a spreadsheet that could be scrolled horizontally or paged (like the PageControl sample app. If you could fit at least 3 date columns on each page, the user could see a number of the most recent vitals as soon as the first screen comes up.
Another lo-tech approach would be a drill down table view. This would be a little different from a spread sheet, but has the advantage of being one of the most common, standard iPhone UI's. For example, every cell in the first screen might show the name of the vital and 2 or 3 dates. Then a touch on that cell would bring up a table showing the entire history for that vital on separate lines.
I assume the key is to present the most important data on the first screen, preferably without any need to scroll vertically. A don't know what a doctor or nurse looks at first, but if it's less that 10 or 12 vitals, those should be visible along with as many of the most recent values that will fit. Guess you don't need me to tell you that, but I have a knack for the obvious and sometimes
writing it down can be useful.
I think any of KT's suggestions will give you much better sales right outta the gate. I've found that doctors (especially the male variety) will go for a flashy UI as often or more often than anyone else. But if you want to get something in the store asap, you might consider a lo-tech version 1, followed by a knock-ur-socks-off version 2.
    Hope that helps!

  • Best way to present UNDOWNLOADABLE video on the web?

I have been asked by a client to build a site with short instructional videos that *must not be downloadable*.
    So I'm assuming streaming: Correct?
Which format is the best for this: I would prefer QuickTime.
How easy is it to produce videos in that (or any other) format that cannot be grabbed/downloaded?
    TIA!

There is no "password protected" method for video files short of "media keys" (Sorenson software) but you can use password for entry to the Web pages that hold them.
The html code to block the disclosure triangle in the QuickTime controller is as simple as adding kioskmode="true" in the object and embed tags used on that page.
It doesn't prevent just one of your password allowed visitors from sharing the page password or keep your files from being shared.
The file location is still viewable in the page elements that make up your page code.
Your clients are asking the impossible. No file on the Web is safe from being "borrowed". If they can view the page (and code) they can capture your media file used in it.
    http://www.sorensonmedia.com/mmpages/?pageID=4
And those same pages explain what media keys are and how they work.
Pretty old technology that is easily circumvented by screen capture software. Probably why I've never been offered a media key file even though it was available for use since QuickTime 3.

  • Best way to present compare/contrast in eLearning?

    Hi everyone,
Back in my ILT days, I had a great activity involving comparing and contrasting similar items. The learners begin by brainstorming every conceivable way the two things are alike and the facilitator captures the ideas on paper. Once all of those are exhausted, I'd switch to having the learners brainstorm every way the things are different. It was a great method for reducing confusion between similar topics. Now I'm doing 100% WBT and I've got a project that has two very similar and often-confused sub-topics. That compare/contrast technique would be perfect for these sub-topics, but I'm at a loss as to how to allow learners to brainstorm input for an online course. I thought about the short answer quiz option but at the end of the day, I'd still need to provide "correct" answers and I simply want the learner to be able to enter anything and then move that answer to the appropriate "Compare"/"Contrast" bucket.
Any ideas? I have Captivate 5.5 for PC and access to Flash.
    Krista

We do a lot of the same type of activity in our ILT, especially for major system enhancements, to help move people through change management.
Could you do a non-validated text box of "enter all the characteristics that are similar" let them type whatever they want, then give a caption that doesn't evaluate what they enter but only gives examples of the similarities "compare your responses to this list of similarities"?
I only have basic knowledge of Flash (pretty good with basic tweens and such, AS is a bit beyond my grasp still) but could you create something in Flash that accepts their typed responses, stores them as variables, then uses those same variables as dynamic text objects for a drag/drop activity?  Or give them a bucket of characteristics and let them drag/drop to 'similar' and 'different' groups?

  • Hi I would like to show a presentation written on my macbook air on my television what is the best way to connect the two ?

Hi I would like to show a presentation written on my macbook air on my television what is the best way to connect the two ?

Much depends on the available connectivity  of your television.
If it has HDMI input available, all you will need is a minidisplayport to HDMI adapter, and an HDMI cable long enough to place the Mac in the desired proximity to the TV. The adapter is avaialble from the Apple Store online.
Provided the HDMI input on the television supports sound, and the model of your MBA supports it as well, make suree that your adapter is also supportive of sound, otherwise you will need to run separate cabling from the headphone jack of the MBA to TV sound input or external speakers.
This is a somewhat specific answer to a question without any requisite detail. You don't indicate the model or type of inputs on your TV, nor do you indicate the model/generation of MBA you have.

  • Whats the best way to get a copy of a clients DB onto an internal test DB?

    Hi there
We have a client who hosts an Oracle 9i DB in house and we need to get a copy of this DB onto our own servers for testing purposes. What is the best way to go about doing this?
I was reading about the data pump for exporting and importing [http://www.exforsys.com/tutorials/oracle-10g/oracle-10g-using-data-pump-export.html]
Would this meet my requirements and how easy is it to do? Also what type of export would I need to do (there a 5+ schemas using different tablespaces)
Sorry if this is all a bit vague, but i am not a DBA and have been tasked with doing this :(
    Thanks in advance,
    Toby
    edit: sorry i meant a 9i DB
Edited by: redeye on Nov 5, 2009 11:21 AM

If you want to export schemas/objects from 9i db you wouldn't be able to use datapump for exporting them, although you can import the dump file that will be created using the datapump.
Determine what schemas you need at the test(destination) database, and then export them from the source(clients db) database.
Also make sure that on the target database server, os paths where the oracle related files will be created(redo logs,datafiles...) are the same as the ones that are on the source database.

  • [vmware] Best way to share files between host and client

    Good afternoon!
I have successfully installed VMware server on my machine and set up a virtual machine, powering Windows XP for study issues (emulation via wine does not do the trick for me). The virtual machine runs fast and stable but does not meet my requirements unless I have two issues faced:
    First:
How to access a USB pendrive monunted by the host system properly within the client?
    Second:
What is the best way to share file system space between host and client? Should I set up a Samba share which is accessible for both host and client or is it save to grant my VM access to my physical hard disc as a whole (using it as a partition)?
Thanks for answers in advance, I have still quite a lot to learn, when it comes to VMs.
    Regards,
    ~cg

Do not setup your VMware to be able to access your physical disk as a whole. This would have you mounting the filesystem twice, corrupting it in the process.
You /can/ setup VMware with Sharing Folders that lets you share your filesystem (either / or just /home or something else) and that is what I would recommend.
As for accessing the pen drive from both operating systems at once, I'd say use the same Sharing Folders method. I always share /mnt so that I can access my cdrom/USB/etc from the vmware OS.
The sharing folders is basically the same as a samba share, but uses vmware's own method (HGFS). Samba is more secure (if you are worried about your VMware OS breaking from it's shell and attacking your real filesystem, which is unlikely). You need the vmware tools installed to make use of it.

  • Best way to compare data of 2 tables present on 2 different servers

    Hi,
We are doing data migration and I wil like to compare data between 2 tables which are present on 2 different server. I know to find the difference i can go for minus or full outer join and by creating the database link.
But my problem is the volume of the data. The tables under consideration has approximately 40-60 columns and number of rows in each tables are around 60-70 million. Also both the tables are on 2 diffferent servers.
    I would like to know
1] What will be the best way to compare the data and print the difference from performance perepective? I know that if I am going for DB links then its will definitely impact the performance as the tables are across 2 different servers.
2] Is it advisable to go for using SQL - PL/SQL for this kind of senario or dump the data in flat files and use C or C++ code to find the difference.
    Regards,
    Amol

Check this at asktom.oracle.com. Search for "Marco Stefanetti" and follow the few posts between Marco and Tom. As far as your tables being on separate servers, you could consider dumping the data to file and using external table or using CTAS ( create table as select ) to get both tables locally.
