Best way to programmatically test opening a pdf

My company, among other things, uses an image processing library to do complex conversions of various types of content ... including pdfs. Sometimes, this library fails and we are looking for a way to, offline, automate the process of checking whether the pdf file was actually valid. All we really want to do is have one machine which can be triggered at some point after an error occurs to try opening the file and mark a record in our error db indicating if it could be opened or not. Then we can act accordingly.
I found pdf library but that has a lot more functionality than simply open. Also, the form to get information on this library does not work for me so I am unable to contact any sales reps from adobe. What would someone recommend for this situation and if it is pdf library, can someone tell me how to get the online submission system to work. I tried chrome and safari and neither work (I can't enter the state field in either and the submit via email button does nothing).
Thanks
Lee
PS: If this is not the correct discussion alias, please let me know where to post. There didn't seem to be a dev sdk related disucssion

In terms of learning more about the "Adobe PDF Library", how to use it and how to license it, you should get in touch with someone at Datalogics (as far as I know Adobe only handles big key account customers themselves when it comes to the Adobe PDF Library).
Datalogics have a website at http://www.datalogics.com/ and their contact form at http://www.datalogics.com/company/contactus.asp should work just fine. If not, I'd try [email protected] ...

Does Adobe Reader for iOS have the ability to open inbedded links created with Acrobat Standard to additional PDF docs?  If not, then what would be the best way to use these already created PDF's on an I Pad?

    driddy61,
As of June 2014, none of the Adobe Reader mobile products support the hyperlink action for opening a separate PDF document.
    Adobe Reader for iOS
    Adobe Reader for Android
Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8
In addition, the Reader mobile products do not open multiple windows/documents simultaneously, which would make the navigation between PDF documents nearly impossible. (Once a hyperlink takes you to a different PDF document, you have no way to go back to the original PDF document.)
The only Adobe Reader product that fulfills your department's requirements is Adobe Reader XI (mostly for Windows/Mac desktop/laptop computers).  Acrobat Pro and Standard are paid products.
Because you are in search of a less expensive device for your department, you could get a Windows tablet instead of a Windows desktop/laptop computer. Microsoft Surface Pro (that you've mentioned in your previous reply) is just one example.  You can also find other less expensive Windows tablets.
    Tablets
However, please keep in mind that there are two different types of Windows tablets running two different operating systems.
    (a) A Windows tablet with an Intel-based processor running Windows 8.1 Pro
    Example: Surface Pro 3
You can install and run traditional desktop apps (e.g. Adobe Reader XI) and new Windows Store apps ("Modern" or "Metro-style" apps).
    (b) A Windows tablet with an ARM-based processor running Windows RT 8.1
    Example: Surface 2
You can only install and run Windows Store apps (e.g. Adobe Reader Touch) but not traditional desktop apps like Adobe Reader XI.
In general, type (b) tablets are more affordable than type (a) tablets.  However, if you want to run Adobe Reader XI, you do need to check the technical specification of each tablet and make sure the following conditions are met.
    Processor: Intel
Operating system:  Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 8/8.1 Pro, not RT
Hope this helps you choose the right device for your department.  Please let us know if you have any questions about system requirements or supported features in the Adobe Reader products.

    smgchandler,
Any camcorder that can connect via USB or that can save to an SD card can interface with an iPad if you have the iPad Camera Connection Kit so that you can watch your videos on the new iPad's beautiful retina display.  You can find this on the Apple website or in most big box retail stores.

There is no really good way to do what you want. Any tracks you purchase via your own iTunes Store account are for your personal use, tied to your iTunes Store account, and can't be given to anyone else. If you don't want to gift the tracks to her and can't access her iTunes Store account, the only option other than creating her a completely new iTunes Store account (which will require a new email address for her) is to buy the CDs those tracks are on.

  • Best way to collect data from a PDF?

What is the best way to collect 3 pieces of data that can be exported to Excel from a PDF that was created from a webpage?
I thought about using a form, but I would need the form to stay with the PDF. Is it possible to attach a form that would open side by side with my PDF where I can type the data, then somehow export the data into Excel?
Is it better to use insert comments, which looks like they can be exported as well?
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
You could save your data using TDMS as well as ASCII to simply load it in another application later.
Attached VI shows you how to save your data to a File after a certain amount of iterations, you can combine this then with your code and a timestamp.

  • What is the best way to find what version of PDF Reader from Adobe is installed on a windows OS?

    Hi,
I am developing a .Net App in which i want to find which version of PDF Reader from Adobe is installed on an Windows OS.
It can be any of the software
    Adobe Reader
    Adobe Acrobat X Pro
    or any other.
    How to find out?

The best way would be to find and query the AcroRd32.exe executable. The file version information is stored in the executable itself.
There are lots of places in the registry that you could also potentially access relevant information.
    For example the uninstall string:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Contains a string that you could use to search for the application version.
How you would do this in .NET I'm not sure but you would use some kind of text search command to search for the relevant text and then use "if exists" condition.

  • Best way to import the word or PDF file

    Hi All,
I am going to start a new project in Robohelp (7.0).
Presently i am working on the evaluation version, but will get the
    original copy soon.
All the existing documents are Pagemaker files and i need to
copy them into Robohelp project. I have not been supplied with the
stylesheet, so i will be going with the default htmlhelp css till i
    get the new one.
Three ways i can think of copying the content is:
    1) Direct copy and paste from Pagemaker file to Robohelp (to
    relevent topics)
    2) Copy all the content in word file and format it and then
import the word file in Robohelp
    3) Pagemaker generates PDF files with the existing content,
so importing PDF files in Robohelp
Please tell me the easiest and the best way to do it, so that
    it leads to less problems.
    Thanks

    Hi Krim,
Our dump files normally are never that big so that maybe you could face some other issue here.
If your dump was a full DB schema dump like:
    $ exp username/password file=full.dmp parameter-list
then the import should first drop the user in the target system
    SQL> drop user username cascade;
this is to drop the existing schema before importing
SQL> Create user according to your reqs
    $ imp username/password file=full.dmp full=y commit=y ignore=y
Don't know which env you have to run this, but in our case for instance using an 8 X 1.6GHz Itanium2 Montecito a 14 GB dump takes about a couple of hours to import (with an EMC Clariion disk array). It's also true that Oracle imp (did you use exp or expdp ?) is not able as far as I understand to achieve parallelism like impdp where in case of multiple huge tables the import time could be sped up.
Another thing you may want to check is if you have archive logging on, since the import will log there consuming time.
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • Best way to Unit Test Controller Layer

Hi, I was hoping to get the opinion on this matter. My group is currently discussing which method would be the best to Unit test the Controller Layer (using StrutsTestCase). Basically with StrutsTestCase, you can test your Action methods and verify that the action forwards to the correct place, or that certain errors come up. The problem is that these Action classes will make Model layer calls that affect the DB. Whats the best way to test the Action classes? Some possibilities are:
#1) Make a mock model layer that instead of hitting the DB uses a "switch" statement to return the correct value.
#2) Use a test DB to test this. The problem with this is that after running tests, you want to leave the test DB in the same state as when you started the test. This is not very easy to do if your web application only does inserts to the DB. In addition, the Model layer Unit testing will be designed such that it will insert, select, update, select, and delete (in that order), so the state of the DB will remain the same after the test is run (unless JUnit crashes halfway).
#3) Use a copy of a test DB on your local computer. This is beneficial because you can do anything to the DB, and then just delete it because a "master" copy is located elsewhere. The problem with this is, we also hoped to do performance testing of the model layer by running multiple threads of the Model layer unit tests. This won't work now because each thread would make a copy of the master DB....
Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

I have never unit tested just a controller. I have always done end to end testing with the systems I have worked on, so I am coming from a different viewpoint than yourself. I would tend to think that just running a full unit test all the way to your database would be the best test. You will be more likely to find the issues with your program if you are testing with an environment as similar to production as possible.
After running a test you can either purge the data you entered from your test by having sql scripts run against the db, or if this is difficult just reload the database from its original backup. You would probably be able to purge the data quicker than reloading the database from my experience, but it depends on your complexity of the sql scripts.
    best of luck.

  • Best way to secure and sell a PDF

Over the past year, I've been taking a few IT certification exams, and I have tons of notes that I've converted to PDF. I didn't realize so many people would be so interested in seeing and buying my notes, especially after giving them feedback on how the experience was and how useful my notes were.
I don't have any experience creating digital certificates, but I do believe there's some good security features I can use with Adobe Acrobat Pro X to get this job done. I know I won't be able to secure everything 100% obviously, but I'd like to do whatever I can.
What is the best method to go about to make sure my PDF can only be opened by the person I sent it to, and make it corrupt if they save a copy, or send it to another person? Also, I know there's a way to prevent right click + copy, but not sure how to do that either. One more thing, is there a way to prevent the PDF contents from being shown in a screen capture?
    Thanks for any help.

The security features do try to do some of what you want, other than the sending to others. However, the security feature is easily gotten around, though the methods to do so are not generally discussed here. So the only real answer to your problem is to use Digital Rights Management. I believe Adobe has a package to do that, but I really have never used it. This is the DRM that was mentioned.
For the average user, there would not be a problem except for the sending out copies. It all depends on how much you want to push the point. The basic security would work for most folks. Keeping them from sending a copy to someone else would have to be on the trust format. If you are wanting to charge, DRM may be the best route. If you are just concerned about the protection of your work, then maybe you should just do a copyright.

  • Best way to Unit test Modules?

I am working on a Project where the main app is a separate Flex project and then there are several Modules each having their own unit tests. What is the best recommended way of setting up something like this in terms of test runners? I would like to have one test runner that loads all others?

  • What's the best way to create and edit a PDF where the source document is also a PDF?

    Hi,
To be specific, we are in the process of upgrading our A/P processes and we have received a user manual from the company we contracted for the upgrade. I've been tasked with customizing this manual for my company's specific processes (this is with the permission).
What is the best course of action to accomplish this? I thought I should save a copy of the manual, and then modify each page as necessary. I will be adding and deleting text and graphics. I have never used Acrobat before, but consider myself a quick study.
Any suggestions wil be greatly appreciated.

When Acrobat saves to Word 97-2003 format, it actually writes a Rich Text Format file - the binary .DOC format used by Word is a closed standard. The .DOCX format is just XML, and neither export process cares if you have Office installed or not. In theory, OpenOffice can read both types of file; but there does tend to be some minor difference between how OO arranges things and how MS Word does it.
The critical thing is that if the PDF file has structure tags (i.e. it's accessible), Acrobat can flow the content properly in the exported file and can identify things as headers, quotes, lists, tables, etc. If not, it has to guess what the reading order is based on where things are on the page, and it will often get confused by intricate layouts, spanned columns, etc. There are of course some things (such as Word Art) which don't survive the trip to PDF and back, and will show as an image.

  • What is the BEST WAY to define a circle in PDF?

    Hi All
I have been making circles in PDF in two ways and they both seem a little "hinky". One is using 4 bezier curves to approximate the circle which works pretty well and the other for smaller circles has been to use a thick line with a round end cap and make it one unit long and filled with white. There has to be an easier and better way. Any direction would be appreciated especially a small ASCII file example of the "correct" circle drawing technique.
    Thanks
    Ray

    Hi
Thank you for responding. I'm using that technique now which works well but
I was hoping there was some magic formula or operator I had missed. Thanks
again. I'll keep using the bezier technique.

  • VBA - Best way to refresh on open (not all queries)

I have an AO template with many queries. However, I only want a specific query to refresh on open. Using SAPExecuteCommand's refresh crashes Excel at times. Is there an ideal way to accomplish this?
Reason I'm even doing this is to "initialize" the prompt variables, which apparently requires first refreshing the query. I do not use the prompt dialog but instead use VBA to set the prompts. Before I can set the prompts, I have to force one of the queries to refresh. Kind of a catch 22 situation. Is there anyway to SAPExecuteCommand "initialize variables"? Refreshing the query on workbook open frequently crashes AO/Excel.
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi John,
You're using the right Analysis API call for refreshes, but the reason you're getting the errors, sometimes, is that the workbook open event doesn't guarantee that Analysis is completely loaded and/or aware of the workbook.
Have you tried adding a Workbook_SAP_Initialize routine to your workbook? If you add this to your workbook, you can trigger a refresh more reliably. Analysis calls the routine, if it is present, after the workbook is opened, or after Analysis is loaded, while the workbook is open.
You may find that calling your code from this callback routine means you don't have to refresh before initializing the prompts too....
Add this code to your workbook in the ThisWorkbook module.
         Public Sub Workbook_SAP_Initialize()
           MsgBox "Analysis just initialized " & ThisWorkbook.Name
         End Sub
You can find more info on Workbook_SAP_Initialize in the user guide....

  • What's the best way to store test parameters for future use?

I'm creating a test stand that will perform various "standard" tests. Each of the tests has it's own setpoints (integer numbers) as well as some string values that are stored in the log file with the data.
What is the easiest way to store these setpoints and strings so that I can pull them into the VI in the future, say by selecting a test type from a ring control, etc.?
I would also like to make this dynamic so that new test types can be stored from the vi. (i.e. I don't want to have to hard code all the future tests and their parameters).

I like INI files, too. If you are looking for an easy way to read and write your parameters to INI, take a look at the Variant Configuration File IO Library of the OpenG Toolkit.

  • Whats the best way to load test?

So our app is ready for prime time and we are concerned about response times whether we will survive 100 simultaneous users.
It would be additionally useful if I knew how many users we could tolerate simulataneously.
I attempted running jmeter but I didn't spend a lot of time with it and it didn't overwhelm me with information.
I get the sense that I would probably have to spend a couple weeks to really create useful, valid test simulations which I didn't have time for.
Also, is it even legitimate? The fact that it is one single machine trying to simulate a hundred users on distributed machines?
So, I really lacked a lot of confidence in my test.
In fantasyland it would be great, if say there were some distributed google cloud machines that could simulate 100 users and start firing away at my app.
Starting at 10 users and ramping up until no longer responsive and then providing those results.
The fact is I don't have a lot of experience with this and would appreciate insight.
Also, it just occurred to me that this is an internal app inaccessible from outside the organization.
Does anyone have something they might consider the holy grail of load testing or good advice? Thx.

If you have money to spend, I would recommend using Oracle's Application Test Suite (ATS) since it is the only test tool I know of that allows you to create a functional test and then convert it to a load test. The capabilities of this tool are pretty amazing considering that it is a single tool where the go to toolset in the past was Win Runner / Load Runner. With Win Runner, you needed 50 machines (or VMs) if you wanted to generate front end load for 50 users. With ATS, you record a script with your browser, and then convert it into a load test. You can adjust things like think time, ramp up time, sustained load, etc.
What a lot of people miss is that testing tools can be used indefinitely, not just for getting through a migration. If you script your tests appropriately (which means that your user base trusts them), you can use them for every code release because it takes very little effort to run a test script. On top of that, you can set up strategically placed machines around your network that are set up to run a specific test script (think of a common transaction) so that performance metrics can be captured. I worked for a company that had 160 locations around the world and we used our testing tool as a performance monitor in the locations with the worst performance. Having a tool allowed us to see whether our performance issues were related to network, database, app servers, etc. This took the burden of explaining performance issues off of the users. Most users can't really articulate what the problems are anyway (and they aren't expected to).
If budget is an issue, you can use JMeter from Apache, which will give you the load testing capability but you will miss out on the excellent reporting and management capabilities of the Oracle Application Test Suite.
