Best way to transfer large files over the Internet?

What is the best way to transfer files that are too large to send by e-mail over the internet, preferably ways that are free or very cheap and are easiest for sender and receiver to work with?
I assume one way is by ftp, but would that necessarily mean buying space on a server somewhere that both I and my recipients can get to? or is there a way to avoid this cost?

you can use a cloud storage like Mobileme (not free) or DropBox (free up to 2GB).
you can also use direct file sharing over internet. no extra software or 3rd party services required. that's what I use to move files between my home and work computers.

    … ftp, file sharing, dropbox…?

    Is this a one-time transfer?
If so, what is your email file size limit?
Depending on the limit, try Compressing the file.  If that doesn't work, try splitting the file into smaller chunks with Tar.
In Terminal (assumes file is on Desktop, if not, just change cd)
Note: don't use full path in filename unless you want it stored in the Tar
This will break the file into 10MG chunks (-L10000):
      cd Desktop
      /usr/bin/gnutar -L10000 -cMv --file=tar_archive.{tar,tar-{2..25}} [FileToTar]
to Extract on the receivers end:
             /usr/bin/gnutar -xMv --file=tar_archive.{tar,tar-{2..25}}

What is the best way to find a file on the servers disk without using web.xml?
I want to find a configuration file not contained within the war file I have

You can specify the path to the file as a system property
              eg
              java -Dconfig.file.location=./mydirecotry/myfile.txt com.test.MyApp

  • How can I download a file over the internet from a WebDAV server?

I am trying to download a file over the internet from a WebDAV server. I've tried doing it with Datasocket as suggested in these articles,
<a href="http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/f3cc5f7e60a75cb2862567e700696abf?opendocument">Retrieving an Unformatted Text File via FTP or HTTP Using DataSocket</a>

but all I get is error 1181 (protocol unrecognized by Datasocket).
I know I have the URL correct, because I can put it into a web browser and it works fine - I can download the file manually.
But I want to have a LabVIEW program do the download automatically.
I have the internet toolkit, but don't have the foggiest clue how to use it, and am using LabVIEW 7.1
I am a bit out of my depth here, so any advice welcome.
    Regards,
    Mark.

    MIG,
What is the URL to the website? Is it an FTP site? The articles you referenced are for specific transfer protocols. If the stie you're trying to get to doesn't follow these protocols, then you'll get the error you're seeing. You may have to use ActiveX to control IE and download the files programmatically.

  • Can anyone advise on how to share large files over the net?

    Hi all.
So I need to share large video files over the net.
The files will be between 5 and 10 GB
Does anyone have a solution for this?
I have been using my ftp program and just giving the recipient the download link.
But its affecting my upload quota and the recipients download quaota with our ISP's.
Is there an easier way at all?
    Thanks.

Contact the ISP for a temporary exception on the quota, or to get an explanation of how long before you can send a second segment for the download.  You can split large downloads by UUEncoding them, or making separate disk image segments with Disk Utility.  You could also find out if any local WiFi hotspots don't have a quota issue.  Lastly, you could send a thumbdrive by mail.

  • Is there any way to send a DDP over the internet?

Is there any safe way to send a DDP over the interent without loosing anything?
    Any suggestion welcome, thanks !
I think Wamnet doesn`t do this anymore (?)

well, i recently FTP'd a DDP to my favourite plant, and it took about 6 hours to upload. (I can only go up at about 100KB/S.)
It was a job for them (i'm so lucky to have a replicator that calls me when one of their clients has a problem), and i could convince them to use their FTP server (that they have never opened to third parties). So that was free...
I could (or a courier) drive there in an hour and a half, but i rather not pay for a courier(about 100 euros) to do so, and sending a disc by snail mail takes overnight... (In this case i did not trust the FTP so i both snail mailed a pocket drive as well as FTP). The plant ended up using the FTP version as it was there earlier. Besides that, they also checke the drive and it failed
I did not zip the image (takes a long time, it does not get smaller), i trust the DDP to be in a rock solid format anyway.
But you can always FTP a small project. Any plant uses verification software and it will take just a few minutes to see if there is any corruption during the transfer.

  • Share files over the internet between PC and MAC server

    The set up:
A MAC OS X 10.3.9 server running on a local network in the office sharing files with 15 windows XP and MAC.
    The problem:
Can't connect a windows XP away (from home over the internet) to see files being share by the MAC server. I can do this with an other MAC from my home when I go to "Connect to server" and then I type the IP adress of my MAC server at the office, login with the user ID and then can see files on the server. When I am at the office, there is no problem with the windows XP machine to connect to the MAC server. When I am at home, I can connect with my windows XP machine to the MAC server at the office for FileMaker server (reside on MAC server at office), but I can not see the files shared on the MAC server over the internet when I connect via windows explorer serveradress
(no firewall on the MAC server).
    Thank you

I would like to know this, too. I'm trying to set up something with my bother on a PC. How does he make a connection on windows? I don't know what to tell him to do.
Gabriel, do you have Wndows Sharing activated under Services in your Sharing Prefs?

  • What Is The Best Way To Transfer Music Files to New MacBook

Just got my new MacBook. So far, love it. Now, I need to transfer all the music files from my iTuns on my old PC to the MacBook. I have all the files backed up on a network drive, that the MacBook can access no problem Should I try to manually copy all the files the Mac hard drive, or can I use the "consolidate" feature in iTunes?? I'm not sure what that does, actually. I want to avoid having to manually File/Add to Library over 1000 songs!
    Any help appreciated!

Unless you've changed the automatic copy option in the Advanced settings of the iTunes preferences, just drag the files into the open iTunes window.

  • Best way to transfer large datasets between actors (Actor framework)

    Hi everyone
I am in the planning / design phase of a larger application for which I wish to use the Actor Framework. It seems like a good "design pattern", easy for multiple developers to work on, easy to expand and easy to maintain.
In this application I need to transfer data betweeen actors/modules at a considerable rate. The data is the continous measurements from a DAQ device (or multiple devices) sampling at 200kHz. That's 200 kHz * 8 byte = 1.5 Mb/s per device.
There is no way this is done using the messages of the actor framework - those messages are designed to signal start, stop, select tasks etc. within the application. So how to transfer that amount of data between actors?
I've thought about using TCP/IP on localhost - this could also easily be expanded to allow different parts of the program to run on different machines on a network. I've even tested it and it works quite well. But I would like to hear some opinions or alternatives before I decide to go with this solution. Any thoughts or alternatives?
    Thanks
    Jonas

    JonasCJ wrote:
Could this be done without TCP/IP and just a LABVIEW queue? Passing the queue in a message from one actor to another?
If it's in the same process then yes, and it would be more efficient, because with TCP you have to create a copy when converting the data to a string, another copy when receiving and a third one when converting back. Unless you really are planning on distribtuing it, I would suggest avoiding that. Sidebar - AQ has been talking about networked actors and I believe there should even be an experimental branch in the AF group in the community area. You might want to check that out.
Incidentally, if you are planning on splitting it and don't actually need the real time processing, you might consider saving the data to a network drive and then simply having the other side loading the data from the file. It should be simpler.

  • Best Way to Copy Large Files

In copying files to a USB memory stick, is there a particular file size limit above which simple drag and drop using the Finder does not work consistently? In general can we assume that if it appears to copy OK, then the files are in good shape? For example, if I'm copying a Documents folder with 5 GB of data onto an 8 GB USB stick would it be appropriate to use drag and drop? What are the alternative ways to copy large blocks of data? Is there a way to use Disk Utility for this?
I should mention one of the reasons I'm asking. I've occasionally noticed large copying procedures sometimes cause the Finder to "hang."
I do have SuperDuper which I use to clone my internal HD to a peripheral HD on a regular basis. Would that software provide a way to copy single files or folders containing lots of files to my USB memory stick?
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

Drag and drop is fine. There's really no good reason to do it a different way.
The only file limit is if the USB stick is formatted FAT32. Then 4GB minus 1 byte is the largest file size it can hold. If you format the stick as Mac OS Extended (HFS+), there's no limit to the file size, just the capacity of the drive itself.
If you need to share between Mac and Windows, then formatting the stick as ExFAT is best. The only catch is that versions of OS X earlier than Snow Leopard will not be able to read the drive. Windows XP, Vista and Win 7 can read ExFAT. There is also essentially no file size limit with ExFAT.
As far as the hanging, that may be the OS stalling on a file larger than 4 GB if the USB stick is formatted as FAT32.

  • Best way to transfer HDD Files to another External HDD ?

I am using an iMac , that has Two external HDD connected to it, HDD ( A ) and (B ) both formatted in Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ) . ( A ) is only used to backup the iMac with SuperDuper and ( B ) is only used to store photos and music . I now want to transfer every thing thats stored on ( B ) over to ( A ) and then remove ( B ) from the iMac all together. before I go and do any thing , as I am still learning, I really would like to find out if there's a best way to do the transfer ..? so comments or advice would be most welcome.

The best thing is to keep your backup drive separate from the drive you use for storage. In other words what you now have is better than what you propose doing.
