Better appearing smart guides labels

It is good work with smart guides, but when I draw line, it snaps when I do not want also.
It is because of big snapping tolerance which I can set in Preferences.
Smart guides labels disappear very very soon too. Because of it people who draw lines or select them they must be VERY CAREFUL.
It is not good. No relax. It is stressful.
It would be nice, when snapping tolerance is not too high - about 2 pixels - and I can reliably grab handles (labels ALWAYS appear).
Because now when I work in Illustrator, smart guides handles sometime appear, but sometimes not. It is very irritating and I can not feel free to draw. It would be nice when the smart guides labels always appear when I am next to handle top, or next to point. It does not matter, when anchor is selected, or not. Labels always appear when I am going over it, or close to it. It would be very pleasant.
An I can Always reliably grab them - not depenting on snapping tolerance. Always reliably grab them.
Then I can comfortably and reliably draw lines with small snapping tolerance also.

We're creating prototypes for sites and to circumvent the issue of InDesign not placing objects on whole numbers we're using a 1px x 1px grid... it could be that this interferes with the smart snapping and snapping of objects? We could swear though that we had both the green smart guide lines appearing and this grid simulataneously?

  • Smart guides labels appears but sometimes NOT.

    When I am using smart guides in illustrator cs6 it is problem which makes me nervous.
    When I select point, handles appear. When I move next to handle top the label appear. But SOMETIMES NOT appear, SOMETIMES APPEAR. It is terrible.
    - It might be nice when labels ALWAYS APPEAR, WHEN I AM NEXT TO HANDLE TOP or NEXT TO THE ANCHOR POINT.
    Because then I know, that when label appear, I can work with that concrete handle, or point.
    I know, that it depends of the snapping tolerance, which I can set in Preferences. But when the snapping tolerance is too high, it is unpleasant to draw anything. When snapping tollerance is high i can draw objects on A4 leter which is usual, but my lines and handles are attached anytime when I do not want.
    When I do not use smart guides it is unpleasant to draw lines too. Sometimes I grab handle when I want, but sometimes I fail.
    I think it may be a good solution if you fix it so that the snapping tollerance will be lower, but labels will appear sooner and reliably.
    I like Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. But this is the reason, why Illustrator makes me crazy, when I work there. Thanks

    David,
    I do not have align to pixel grid or snap to grid turned on
    It sounds as if Illy thinks the former.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Smart Guide Problem

    Smart guides 'intersect,' (two interweaving paths) does NOT seem to appear anymore –(when 'ADD Anchor' has been selected).  A degree of accuracy is lost...  Eye strain increases..........

    Adobe Illustrator – (2014)
    Problem solved temporarily...
    Reverted back to 2013. This handy function has either been removed (smart guide label) or 'simply' didn't install properly... Everything else seemed alright.....

  • Is Illustrator CC's Smart Guides Intersect label MIA?

    I recently upgraded from Illustrator CS5 to the latest Illustrator CC version and I noticed that Smart Guides no longer label intersecting lines... Is there a preference I need to enable for that label to appear as it did on CS5?

    It's a tweak to put the ruler origin in Illustrator back the way it was before Adobe changed in CS4.
    Example:
    In pre-CS5 if you wanted to move an object dimensionally up and the right 1 inch you would select the item, double click on the black arrow tool and and in the Move window you would type "Horizontal 1, Vertical 1" and it would move up and to the right 1 inch. But, in CS5 Illustrator was change from using quadrant 1 to quadrant 4 (similar to how Indesign is) so if you wanted to move the same object up and to the right 1 you would need to enter "Horizontal 1, Vertical -1".
    Which means you would always be working in negative space. If you're new to Illustrator you wouldn't even notice this but for "Veterans" this was a bit of pain... so someone out there was cleaver enough to figure out to "tweak" how the ruler interprets the origin and restore Illustrator to use quadrant 1.
    The tweak isn't very difficult, but I would not recommend this to novice users:
    How to change the ruler origin in Illustrator.
    To change the ruler origin (and direction of the Y axis) in CC to be the same as in CS4 and earlier:
    Close down Illustrator (you can only change the preference file with Illustrator closed);
    This is a global change so you only have to do it once (just as you can undo it once).
    Pref file directory is as follows (please note the Library may be hidden):
      /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator Settings/en_US/1
    Find and open the Adobe Illustrator Prefs file with Textedit
    Find and change the following two bits of code:
      /isRulerOriginTopLeft 1  change it to  /isRulerOriginTopLeft 0
      /isRulerIn4thQuad 1  change it to  /isRulerIn4thQuad 0
    Close and save the Pref file.
    I only use Illustrator 1n OSX so I don't know where the Pref file is stored on Windows. I did not figure this out and I do not take any credit for this tweak. ***Mod at your OWN RISK***

  • In CS6, smart guides don't appear to be working correctly.

    I'm having some trouble with smart guides in Ai CS6. They are on. However, when my cursor intersects a guide path, words like 'intersect' and 'guide' do not appear, as I have seen them do for others. Also, the 'heads-up' information display that shows the width and height, e.g. when using the grid tool, does not appear either.
    The guides are working to some extent, it seems, since I do get green lines here and there.

    dustOfRumors,
    If you have Snap to Grid on, it disables the use of Smart Guides, so you may turn it off, if.

  • Smart guides just stop appearing (CC)

    Both me and my colleague have noticed with InDesign CC that smart guides just stop showing up. Those little clicks you experience as you change the position of an objects edge and the green lines appear... they just don't do that anymore. Anyone else experienced this?

  • Snap to? Smart Guides? Not sure what the issue is but it's annoying.

    Just made the big step up from CS2 to CS5. Lots of changes as to be expected but otherwise a smooth transition. Nice work Adobe.
    One recurring issue has got me baffled and annoyed. It appears to be a snap-to function yet I'm unable to locate the place where it might be disabled.
    In my previous version of InDesign resizing window sizes and shapes was a fluid and easy motion. Now it's staggering and akward. The text and picture boxes want to snap on an unseen grid. I understand how this can be a useful function for some kinds of work but it also gets in the way of composing an image.
    Any suggestions on how to disable this?
    Presently, I have both Smart Guides and Snap to Document Grid UNCHECKED in the View menu yet I'm remain unable to smoothly and fluidly size my text and picture boxes.
    Thanks!

    There's another new feature, Live Screen Drawing, that's on by default, but for many users it causes real choppiness in moving around on screen. It's at the bottom of the Interface section of the preferences. Try setting it to Delayed. That will allow you to have a live preview when you really want it by clicking, then holding for a moment before you drag, but moving immediately will give you what you are used to in CS2.
    I actually think Smart Guides are worth using. They save me a TON of time.

  • Anyone notice the Smart Guides bug in CS5?

    ID CS5 has a Smart Guides bug when resizing frames to match the size of other frames.  When releasing the mouse after the Smart Guides pop up showing the sizes are equal the frame size changes.  When analyzing this it appears the frame does not resize to where the SmartGuides popped up but where the cursor is located.  There is also jumpiness between the position of cursor and where the Smart Guides pop up.  This behavior occurs vertically and horizontally.  While some jumpiness still exist, it works reliably when frames are aligned.  In other words, if a frame is resized to a point where two sides are aligned then the size of the frame does not change when the mouse is released.
    I have verified the bug in both Windows and Mac versions of IDCS5.
    None of the behavior exist with Smart Guides in ID CS4.
    Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?

    Thanks for checking Peter.
    I am using a laptop, Mac OSX 10.5.8, with ATI Radeon X1600.  The issue still existed wtih my Wacom tablet mouse and a Logitech mouse.  I also just uninstalled the program and reinstalled it and the issue still existed.
    This issue also exists on an iMac with Windows 7 running ID CS5 for Windows.
    Are you using a Mac by any chance?  The issue does not exist so much when the frames are aligned.  So, if you are trying it out and Smart Guides creates a line connecting the two frames you need to move them out of alignment.  Also, if your cursor is dead center over the edge of the frame all is ok.  What it's really doing is snapping to where the cursor is and not to where the Smart Guides popped up.  I'll be really surprised if you're not seeing it with a Mac.

  • Problem with smart guides in CS5 with converting type object to outlines.

    Hi There,
    I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS5, and am having some issues with the smart guides.  I create some type with the text tool, then convert that type object to outlines.  Now, when I want another graphical object to "snap" to any of the anchors of the outlined text graphic, the smart guides don't kick in!  The problem does not seem to occurr if I make a standard graphic with other tools, only when I create a graphic from a type object.  I need to be able to snap to graphical objects that are created via the convert type to outlines command.  Has anybody experienced this issue before?  It's kinda frustrating.
    The issue didn't seem to happen in CS3, and I've noticed the design of the smart guides is a bit different in the CS5 version as well.  Am I missing something?
    Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    When you switched to CS5 did you turn on view >> snap to Point
    If your snapping tolernace is set to a small value, you may need to zoom in more to get snapping to work, or just increase the value. Also make sure you have the appropriate items checked (eg:Anchor Path Labels)

  • Smart Guide/Snap to point not working

    Hi
    I am trying to remove a circular shape from a rectangle in illustrator, the retangles width is 10px and the diameter of the circle is 13px, I centre the circle ontop of the rectangle ( or I appear to)  but when I use the Shape mode tool minus front, the circle is no longer centred ( see images)
    I have tried switching off smart guides and snap to grid and am still having the same problem.
    In the above image you can see once I have divided the 13px circle from the rectangle it has moved off to one side.
    Also when I am trying to manually place the circle ( rather than using the centre guides ) I can only move it by a large degree it alway moves further than I move the mouse, could this be because of a pixel grid? I do not think I am using this. ( can see in the above image where I am trying to place the circle and when I let go of the mouse, the grey circle is where it lands
    From the 2 images below you can see that there is a 1px difference on either side of the extracted circle I was trying to get centred
    I should mention that the 'Align to pixel grid' in the transform menu is inactive when I am trying to do this, as I initially thought that this may be the cause of my problems, but it made no difference

    Rebecca,
    So why does the minus front tool mess up alignment so much?
    No clue. I believe this issue has never been reported.
    At a first glance, it really looked like an Align to Pixel Grid issue, and also the fact that it works when both object widths have an odd (or even) number of pixels.
    But that is apart from the fact that you stated that it was off. If it were on, Align to Pixel Grid would apply to the circle, to the rectangle, or to both.
    Obviously, it is possible to (direct) select each and check. It is also possible to check the Y value of the centre for both in the Transform palette and see that they are actually identical before applying the Pathfinder.
    And if on, Align to Pixel Grid should also affect/destroy the Object>Path>Divide Objects Below way. And it should make it impossible to even place both objects centre aligned when one is an odd number of pixels wide and the other is an even number wide.
    As the issue is described, it may indicate some Pathfinder>Minus Front malfunctioning.
    It may be worth trying some of the following things (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when it is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;

    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, other items may also be relevant);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6, and reinstall.

  • Smart Guides CS4

    I'm studying up on inDesign CS4 though Adobe TV.  Deke's tutorial on making a text frame shows the frame snaping to guidelines and margins.  The dimension arrows appear indicating the frame area is complete top to bottom, left to right.
    My settings have snap to guides and smart guides both turned on (check mark).  However, the only time I see the dimensions arrows is when I snap to the edge of the page.
    I'm snapping to guides and margins, but the arrows do not appear.  Am I missing a setting?

    I understand now.  Thanks!

  • Smart Guides off by a tiny amount

    I've recently been working on a project involving a large amount of stroked paths.  I'm tracing a scan of a line drawing and have been using the Scissors tool a lot to trim where one path runs into another.  When I do this I turn Smart Guides on and use Scissors to "snip" paths at intersections.  I'm careful about only clicking when the intersection is highlighted, but occasionally I notice that the trim is a tiny bit off.  Usually I'll spot a line's round cap extending a little past the line it "runs into" (as in the image here), and when I zoom in I can clearly tell that the anchor point I created with the Scissors tool is a little off.  Often it's more obvious than the image example I've provided.  I then have to use Scissors again, usually at max zoom, and I continue on with a slight queasy feeling in my stomach, knowing there are ones out there I haven't caught.
    I can't even be sure if this issue is only related to the Scissors tool, it might just be a Smart Guides thing.  This is obviously not a crushing problem, but I think this community can respect a desire for precision in vector artwork, not to mention the fact that when I start adding fills I may run into problems.  Pathfinder might work better than Scissors here, but I don't need a workaround, there's no reason Smart Guides should be dysfunctional with Scissors.
    I've searched past discussions pretty thoroughly and haven't found anything like this.  Maybe it's something with my prefs?  I've never messed with them -- just started using Illustrator on this machine several months ago.  Also, for this project I'm currently working with pixel units with Align to Pixel Grid turned off, if that helps.  Can't recall ever experiencing this issue before, although most of my work in Illustrator has been on different machines.
    CS6, late 2013 iMac running 10.9.2.  Thanks in advance if you have any ideas!

    Tara,
    You may be haunted by the Align to Pixel Grid ghost.
    If so, select everything and untick Align to Pixel Grid in the Transform palette, and also untick Align New Objects to Pixel Grid in the options there.
    To avoid it altogether, use a document type without Align to Pixel Grid as the default (RGB documents for web and the like), or change the default.

  • Smart guides InDesign 5.5 problem

    One of my files in InDesign 5.5 has the problem that Smart Guides is greyed out under View > Grids & Guides. The option is ticked but the guides do not appear on the layout when an object is moved. Other files do not have the same problem when open at the same time.
    I've exported the file as IDML and rebuilt it but that has had no effect.
    I have deleted the InDesign prefs file but that has had no effect.
    Any ideas?

    Turn off Document grid magnetic!
    If Magnetic Document Grid is on, Smart Guides will not function (I know, Strange, but it does!)

  • Smart guides not working

    Hello,
    I'm working in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac.
    In Preferences, I set Smart Guides to 30 degree angles and clicked on Construction Guides.
    In View, I clicked on Smart Guides (command U).
    However, when I click on an anchor point and try to move it 30 degrees with Smart Guides to guide me, they don't show up.
    I've tried restarting the program and turning Smart Guides on/off, but nothing seems to work.
    Any idea why the Smart Guide lines don't show up?
    Thank you.
    Joe

    No, I don't think Pixel Preview is the answer.
    I've used Smart Guides effectively for years in Illustrator CS3 without Pixel Preview.
    Often I draw my objects in Illustrator to appear isometric. So I turn on the Smart Guides to help me draw at 30 degree angles.
    As I said, I've done this effectively for years. It's only recently that I noticed that the 30 degree angle guides are not working effectively. On some documents they appear correctly, some they don't appear at all.
    I wonder if this is a glitch is CS4.
    In the most current document I have, I am able to draw a stroke/line at 30 degrees using Smart Guides. I click to establish an anchor point and then move my curser to establish a second anchor point. When I go to click the second anchor (to create the line), 30 degree Smart Guides appear correctly. I am not in Pixel Preview mode.
    However, when I try to move an object (or 2 or more selected anchor points), the 30 degree Smart Guides do not appear.
    Can someone try to duplicate the above and see if they get the same results?
    Thank you.

  • Smart Guides overrides Shift-to-Constrain

    I love Smart Guides. I'm very glad they've been added to InDesign. I had even put in a feature request years ago. However, there is a flaw. When I am Option-dragging to drag a copy of an object, and holding Shift so that the new object is horizontally aligned to the old object, sometimes Smart Guides forces my new object a bit up or down. Seemingly over-eager to please, it is trying to align to something else; in a recent instance, being evenly distributed with some other objects.
    I contend that holding Shift to constrain should override Smart Guides. I don't expect to hear a solution here (beyond temporarily disabling Smart Guides when needed), just seeing if anyone else has the same issue. I'll be putting in a feature request.

    Just tried that and it makes no difference whether I hit shift before or during. Oddly enough, if I just let the Smart Guides do the work instead of shift, it will work, but adding shift makes it decide to try to evenly distribute to some other objects instead.
    My personal issue with letting Smart Guides do my shift-constraining is that it's a lot more finnicky to make sure it's snapping to the right thing. It might be aligning to a nearby object; it's not always crystal clear based on the lines that are appearing. Using shift is supposed to ensure that, hey, it's just dragging along the horizontal or vertical axis, without having to be very careful or look too closely. Shift constraining is such a firmly established tool that it's throwing me for a loop that it doesn't always work like it should anymore. It should have seniority!
    Not losing any sleep over it. I'm just saying.
