Better to virtualize domain controller?

I don't pretend to know much about this other than a very basic understanding, so please bear with me.
We've purchased a new server that we'll be using exclusively for hosting RDP for two clients. Each client will have their own virtual server. We're struggling a bit though trying to decide where to put the domain controller.
There are two things we're considering:
1. The physical server runs ONLY a Hyper V role doing nothing else and we load up a 3rd virtual server that will act as the domain controller for the other 2 virtuals.
or
2. The physical server runs runs the Hyper V AND acts as the domain controller.
The guy loading up the box is suggesting the first option. It seems to me, however, that we're adding another level of "stuff" with the domain controller being a virtual rather. My thinking is that everything has to eventually go out through the
operating system on the physical machine. Making the domain controller another virtual rather than the operating system on the physical box, adds another step where things have to go through the virtual DC THEN out to the physical box.
One of the arguments for the 1st scenario is that we can allocate resources to it more easily if the domain controller is virtual. I also like the fact that if the domain controller goes to crap, its just one file that needs to be restored and we're up again.
He also brought up the fact that the virtual DC could be restarted (after updates, for instance) without having to shut down the other 2 virtuals. Whereas if the DC is loaded on the physical box then the other two viruals would have to be shut down before
a restart of the DC could occur. However, I'm not sure that stuff outweighs any performance loss that might occur going through (what I'm perceiving as) the extra step of a virtual DC.
Any insights would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you,
Ken

Gosh Chris, thanks for all the information and insight.
I want to configure virtual domain controllers and a file server. Based on your discussion, here's my plan--
Host 1:
1 disk (not connected to RAID controller) for host / management OS
running Hyper-V Server core (free) or Server 2012 core
remaining disks configured into RAID array for virtual machines
Virtual Disk 1 - Server 2012 OS Domain Controller - root of forest
Virtual Disk 2 - shared files
Host 2:
Host / management OS is either Hyper-V Server or Server 2012
Virtual domain controller - replicating with Host 1 domain controller through Active Directory
Software requirements:
2 licenses of Server 2012
1 license of Windows 8 (for management workststation)
Hardware requirements:
2 servers
1 management workstation
Desired outcome for redundancy:
In the event Host 1 went off-line either because of Bad Things happening or hardware upgrades, Host 2 could step in and serve as domain controller. Further, I could reattach the virtual disk from Host 1 to Host 2. If Host 1
virtual disks are not available, I could restore the shared files virtual disk file from a backup of Host 1 / Virtual Disk 2 to Host 2.
Concerns:
1) Whether to put the hosts in the domain.
Excellent article at from the Virtual PC Guy blog at blogs.msdn.com on the "The Domain Controller Dilemma. With one administrator and a small network, it seems easy enough to create a workgroup for Host 1 and Host 2, and create local administrator accounts
for each hosts.
2) Windows 8 Client Hyper-V for management.
I would use another workstation running Windows 8 with Client Hyper-V. Would I have access to Host 1, Host 2, and their associated virtual machines? If I had access to Host 1 / Virtual Disk 2 (the shares on the file server), could I attach it to Host 2's
virtual machine?
Any holes or gotchas?
Thanks.

  • Running domain controller as VMs on a hyper-v 2012 cluster

    Hi gurus
I have a question. I want to run two VMs on a Hyper-v cluster. I want to make these VMs as domain controller and leverage the cluster. Can I do this? I have not been able find any information on this. The hyper-v is running on windows 2012, but it can be
upgraded to R2 if there are any benefits associated with this.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Regards

    Hi,
Additional, you can deploy your DC on failover cluster, but we recommend that your clustered servers be member servers. If they are, you need an additional server that acts
as the domain controller in the domain that contains your failover cluster.
And same time, you should attempt to avoid creating potential single points of failure when you plan your virtual domain controller deployment. You can avoid introducing potential
single points of failure by implementing system redundancy. For example, consider the following recommendations while keeping in mind the potential for increases in the cost of administration:
    1. Run at least two virtualized domain controllers per domain on different virtualization hosts, which reduces the risk of losing all domain controllers if a single virtualization
    host fails.
    2. As recommended for other technologies, diversify the hardware (using different CPUs, motherboards, network adapters, or other hardware) on which the domain controllers
are running. Hardware diversification limits the damage that might be caused by a malfunction that is specific to a vendor configuration, a driver, or a single piece or type of hardware.
    3. If possible, domain controllers should be running on hardware that is located in different regions of the world. This helps to reduce the impact of a disaster or failure
that affects a site at which the domain controllers are hosted.
    4. Maintain physical domain controllers in each of your domains. This mitigates the risk of a virtualization platform malfunction that affects all host systems that use that
    platform.

  • Windows Domain Controller on Windows Server 2012 R2: Hyper-V roaming profiles not loading due to slow connection

I have racked my brain and done everything that I know to do for about two weeks now.  I am setting up a new system at our fire department and I am having the worst luck with getting the workstations to login to the domain controller with roaming
profiles.  It keeps telling me that the roaming profile could not be loaded because of a slow connection.  These are workstations that are connected directly to the switch that the DC is connected to.  I have tried multiple connections regarding
the layout (DC into the router, router into the switch).  The router is a Cisco RV220W.  I have two VLANS, one for public and one for private domain.  The Private VLAN has DHCP turned off since I am providing it through the DC.  I currently
have a connection from the Private VLAN going to the unmanaged switch that the workstations and server are plugged into.
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R420 that has 6 NIC ports (1 dual port and 1 quad port).  I have a virtual switch setup on Hyper-V for an external port (let's say Card 2 Port 3) that is assigned to the WS 2012R2 Domain Controller.  The DC can see
the internet fine and the workstations can connect to the shared folders on the server.  I can retrieve files by just using the computer name or FQDN.  The DC is also running DNS and DHCP.  The DNS has the _msdcs setup from when I installed
the active directory role.  I have attempted to assign static IP addresses to the workstations:
    IP:                     10.0.0.80
    Subnet:             255.255.255.0
    IPV4 Gateway:  10.0.0.1
    IPV4 DNS:        10.0.0.12
I've attempted "append the specific DNS suffix", I've "registered the connection in DNS", I've used "use this connections suffix in DNS registration".
    The server is assigned:
    IP:                     10.0.0.12
    Subnet:             255.255.255.0
    IPV4 Gateway:  10.0.0.1
    IPV4 DNS:         10.0.0.12
The DNS entries have forwarders that forward to my ISP DNS servers for lookup
I've enabled and disabled DHCP, I've installed a new VM just to create another DC to make sure that I didn't goof up when I created it.
I've lost my patience with this project and am sinking fast.  Can someone please offer some advice as to what I've done wrong?  I've created this exact scenario at work many times but, I've never done it with Windows Server 2012.  Is this
possibly something to do with the Dell PowerEdge server (Generation 12) with the SR-IOV?  I am going to attempt to work on it some more tomorrow when I get over there.  I think there may be an issue with the SR-IOV not being enabled on the machine
through the Dell Bios.  Would the SR-IOV really cause the workstations to report a slow connection?  When I login at the domain controller the roaming profiles and folder redirection work fine so, I know the GPO settings are correct.  I don't
have "ignore slow connections" or any of those GPO's set.  I need to get it working the correct way so, I didn't want to fool the server when there is another underlying problem.  Any help that someone can offer, I am more than willing
to listen.  If you need more information, please ask.
    Thanks,
    Jay

So, I've managed to research this some more since Thursday and I've come to the conclusion that Hyper-V does a horrible job of supporting Qualcomm NIC cards. That's the only thing I can conclude as far as where the issue is originating. I've read many
post and walkthroughs but nothing that has helped. The issue wasn't with any settings in the domain controller. The issue was that there really is a slow connection originating at the domain controller that is a VM and has network connectivity through the
virtual switch from Hyper-V. So, next question is, how do I get the DC to have better connectivity through the NIC that Hyper-V won't give it? If hyper-v would allow passthrough, this would be so much simpler. VM-ware is looking really good at this point.
Im disappointed in MS right now.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus printer not working after promoting to Domain Controller / AD Services

An associate and myself installed the built-in drivers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus multi-function (network) printer on a Windows Server 2012 Standard server installation and everything worked fine whenever I want to print anything directly from the
Windows Server machine (there's a reason for this, so please understand that ;)  ).
We were able to print without any problems from the Windows Server 2012 machine, using the drivers from Microsoft.  Mainly, because HP has not listed any specific support for Windows Server 2012, only Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the drivers that
came with Windows 2012 seem to work very well.
PROBLEM: I later had to promote the Windows Server 2012 to a Domain Controller, and created the Active Directory configurations, even enabled the Print Services.  After doing all of that, the HP printer will not print anything.  It's like all print
requests directly from the Windows Server go to Nil.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? The only thing I can think of is that after perhaps something affected printing directly once we promoted the server to being a DC, and added other features / roles.  I even tried installing the
HP drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2, and the results are still the same...nothing prints.  Trust me, the printer is set as the Default Printer and even when choosing to print, we make sure the HP OfficeJet Pro is selected, and is on, as other Windows
Client PC's can print to it directly.
Does anyone have any suggestions we could try?  Thanks in advance.

While it is quite a while since this was posted - I can concur a similar issue exists.
We have spent the better part of a day trying to work out why other HP printers work fine but our 8620 prints are not printing and going to Nil.  The print server is hosted on a shared DC.  Comparing to the initial posters details, for some reason
it seems to be most commonly related to the OfficeJet Pro 8600/8610/8620/8630 series printers.
I ended up doing a print server migration from the domain controller to stand alone host and all printers now work from a single server rather than a mix.  Domain controller OSes varied from 2008, 2012, 2012 R2 (tested with multiple) and only after
all of those failed then tried a stand alone server os machine as a last resort which worked fine.  Printing directly from Win 7 / 8 /8.1 clients to the IP always worked.

  • DFS Replication failed to contact Domain Controller.....

I have seen this error since the inception of this stand alone AD PDC instance of Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials. I understand that Essentials does not support other Domain Controllers ; Member servers ; or trust between Domains of any kind. I also
understand that DSF Replication is a service that replicates files between other servers and other domain servers that Essentials dose not want to talk to.
So my question is why am I seeing this DFSR error 1202  in my event log, if Essentials does not support communication to other servers and domain servers? Maybe a better question is why does Essentials even try to implement this
service? Do I even need to try to resolve this issue or should I just disable it and move on?

    Hi,
Did you mean that you did not configure a DFS server in the new DC but you get the DFSR error 1202 in your event log? Then the issue is not related to the existing SBS domain.
Please try to turn off the Windows Firewall to check if it causes the issue. You could also refer to the articles below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Pricing for VM running WS 2012 E R2 primarily as domain controller for ~5 clients

    Hi
I am starting a small medical clinic, with only about 6 client PCs.  However, I  would like a domain network structure for security purposes moving forward rather than a workgroup.
I'm looking at either purchasing a modest server (ie HP Proliant ml310) with windows server 2012 essentials r2 and using it locally (total cost ~$1500) or using a Windows Azure virtual machine to run the domain controller over a VPN.  We already use
office 365 e3, so don't really need a local server for email, storage etc. I already have an old synology NAS that could be used for disk images etc that we would lose out on with the hosted server solution.
Can someone verify my calculations for monthly cost estimate I tried using the calculator --1 small VM + 225 GB storage for the OS came to $65/month
Would I be able to run it on the small virtual machine or would I need to go up to medium just for the OS?  If the later is the case it would definitely not be cost effective.
    Thanks for the help

  • Best pracices for setting up Domain controller for our remote European offices

    Hi,,
We have about 17 remote site across Europe (HQ in UK), I want to start revoking the offices local DC's and host them in a couple of Cloud servers in Germany with local NAS boxes for file storage. I will have MPLS network between the offices to the Cloud
    DC.
Now what would be the best practices and tips for this situation in respect to the DC's. How can I prioritize the remote offices to use the Cloud DC/DNS and not our DC at our HQ in the UK. Would it be better to have a sub-domain created (europe.company.co.uk)
    for the other offices.
Any suggestions on this setup for the DC

    Hiya,
on the conceptual level. The reason for having local DC's, is that if the local sites internet line is offline, people are still able to authenticate and access local resources. From that point of view, you might as well just run with your HQ DC's only. Note:
the cloud does offer availability on their services, that might not be matched by your HQ in terms of double internet lines.
    That said.
The DNS server of the clients as well as the sites & services of Active Directory. Your clients will use the nearest domain controller available from sites and services information.

  • Windows domain controller in a virtual machine: how dangerous is saving its state for a short period of time?

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 virtualization cluster. All the hosts are connected to an external storage system, and virtual machines' files are stored on external volumes (CSVs). All the hosts and virtual machines are a part of the same AD domain
(mixed Windows Server 2012 RTM / 2008 R2 domain controllers). All the domain controllers are running in the virtual machines on the hosts of this cluster.
To prevent problems when all the hosts are turned off and then on simultaneously (for example, because of a power failure) all the domain controller VM files has been placed on local disks of the virtualization hosts (not on the Cluster Shared
Volumes). As Hyper-V services don't depend on other Windows Server services (except its networking components), it means that my domain controllers can always start, providing the virtualization host can start at all. However, it also means
that those DCs cannot be (quickly) migrated to other hosts while their current hosts are being rebooted. So if I need to reboot a virtualization host to install new updates, for example, I have to shut down the corresponding DC, reboot the host
and wait for the DC to finish cold boot and come back online. It means some interruption of service for our users, which, in turn, requires me to perform the reboots late in night.
The downtime can be significantly decreased by saving the state of the VM in which the DC is running. However, all the articles I've found on the Internet strongly recommend against it. I'm trying to understand why this recommendation was issued in the first
place. However, I'm unable to find a clear explanation. I've found some statements that saving state of a DC can cause serious AD replication problems because of tombstoning, and that the password of a DC computer account may be changed
while the DC itself stays in the saved state, which could prevent the DC from connecting to the domain after its state has been restored. However, those considerations are non-significant when we discuss a short-time
(5 to 10 minutes) saved state.
I work with AD and virtualization long time, and I fail to see any danger in saving state of a DC for several minutes. In my opinion, after its state has been restored it would simply replicate all the AD changes from other DCs, and that's all.
    What's your opinion?

    Hello,
    as stated in "http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/virtual_active_directory_domain_controller_virtualization_hyperv(v=ws.10).aspx"
Operational Considerations for Virtualized Domain Controllers
Domain controllers that are running on virtual machines have operational restrictions that do not apply to domain controllers that are running on physical machines. When you use a virtualized domain controller, there are some virtualization software features
and practices that you should not use:
Do not pause, stop, or store the
saved state of a domain controller
in a virtual machine for time periods longer than the tombstone lifetime of the forest and then resume from the paused or saved state.
This may sound as it is supported to store it for shorter times and use it.
BUT recommendation also from the Hyper-V Program manager in
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/11/24/the-domain-controller-dilemma.aspx recommends against using them.
    Also best practices

  • How to test domain controller on upgraded Win Server 2008 R2

The windows team recently upgraded the development environment for the domain controller from 2003 to Windows 2008 R2 and I am to test the Idm functionality on this upgraded version. Our current configuration is that the DC and Idm gateway runs on different machines. To test this new DC, i want to install the idm gateway on that server and run some onboarding and termination test cases just to make sure if the AD connection is working on the upgraded DC. But i am getting ’Input/output error’ when i try to install the service and from the documentation it says 'The most common cause of this is that you do not have rights to work with this service.'. The server admin tried installing the gateway with his id as well and it failed. He tested installing in on the 2003 version of DC and it worked, so its not a matter of permission (i think..)...
Does anyone have any better idea on how to test an upgrade of a DC from version 2003 to 2008 R2? Any help in this matter is appreciated. We are running Idm 8.1 on a Windows platform and an upgrade to OW 8.1.1. Patch 2 is also in the works..
    Thanks in advance.

I may have found a workaround. Can you try to change the "compatibility mode" in 2008 R2 to "Windows XP SP3" and see if it will install?
Admittedly I have not done this myself so I'm not entirely sure where or how it's done, but I have confirmation it resolves the issue from others who have faced it.

  • Group MSA account fail when Domain Controller in Test Domain Fails to start KdsSvc. Event ID 7023

Yesterday, in my test domain, I created the KDS root key using the Add-KdsRootKey –EffectiveTime ((get-date).addhours(-10))
command on a DC that is not the PDC Emulator because it was the server I was on at the time.  Today, when I tried to create gMSA accounts on the PDC emulator, I get:
Event ID 7023 The Microsoft Key Distribution Service terminated with the following error: An Exception occurred in the service when handling the control request
I turned on logging on to the KdsSvc and get 2 other errors:
KdsSvc Event ID 4001: Group Key Distribution Service failed to start. Status 0x80070020
KdsSvc Event ID 4007: Group Key Distribution Service cannot connect to the domain controller on local host.  Status 0x80070020.  Group Key Distribution Service cannot be started because of the error.  Please contact the administrator to resolve
    the issue.
I took the opportunity to clean up AD, the Schema, and DNS, but the kds errors continues.  I am replicating successfully, DNS changes are reflected immediately, and when I run the get-KDSRootKey on the failing server, the key is returned.  The
Get-KdsConfiguration matches the KDS config on the DC that originally ran to create the key.
I have a pretty strict GPO pushed to my DCs but I am still able to create gMSAs on the other server.  I checked ADS&S and found the msKds-ProvRootKey so I know it is at the domain level, but there is so little documentation on the KdsSvc that I
am not sure if it is working as planned.  I have tried unassigning several GPO configuration items but I am throwing darts at this point.  I have also uninstalled McAfee AV; IDS/IPS; Firewall.
With that said, I have questions:
Will gMSAs still work even though the domain pdc emulator cannot start the service?
Is the KdsSvc supposed to start only on the server Add-KDSRootKey was originally created?
What happens if the server the KdsSvc key was created fails and has to be removed from the domain?
Is there any books or configuration items I can review to learn the KdsSvc better?

  • Adding a Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller at a remote site

Hello. I have been trying to set up a hot site at a remote location.  The story is long and involved but a few weeks ago it seemed to be finally working.  Our setup is two mirrored 2008 R2 servers at main site, mirrored with Double Take.
The hot site is the same except that so far I only had one server working.  The two sites connected via site to site VPN.
About a week later our primary server basically crashed.  At first it worked but very slowly.  I was on vacation at the time and so I am not sure of the sequence of events, or exactly what errors were presented, but my associate first tried rebooting.
It took over 20 minutes to boot and then it said something to the effect that no domain controllers were available (not sure about this message).  He then discovered that the server at the remote site had some fsmo roles assigned to it.  He transferred
the roles to the primary at the main site and then demoted the remote server to a workstation (but still a domain member).
After that, rebooting the primary was much faster and everything at the primary site is working again. Now I want to set the remote site up again, but avoid the problem.  The way I originally set up the remote server was to use an IFM file, generated
from our primary.  This should have made the remote server a catalog server, with DNS (which it did), but as far as I know should not have transferred any fsmo roles.
The remote server(s) are wanted to be in the same domain as the primary.  They will also be mirrored from the primary (with Double Take).  If we had total failure at the main site, we wish to be able to immediately begin operations at the hot site
(after a fail over).  I freely admit that I am swimming out of my depth here.  I am not sure that I have selected the correct architecture or used the correct options in setting up the remote servers.  I am looking for information about what
went wrong, and whether some other setup is more desirable.
    Thanks for any help, Russ

Philippe, thank you for you answers.  I do not understand everything you said but I will address each point as best I can:
    1. "In the remote site do you simply do a dcpromo / add the ADDS's role to make the server a active Domain Controller ?"  Yes, but I use the method described at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753720(v=ws.10).aspx, The GUI method.  At step #8 I specified to use advanced mode so I could use the IFM file.
    2. "In your AD' Site and Service MMC, do you configured the remote site ?"  R do not know what you mean by this. How does one configure the site as 'remote'?
    3. "Do you added that remote server as a Global catalogue ?".  Yes, when I built the IFM file I specified to add the global catalog.
    4. "Do you added the PC in site 1, the IP of those DNS server in them ? (last of course) So the computer in the main site will talk to the remote server in case of a crash."  I am not sure I understand this item.  After the remote server
was added, all of the members of both domain servers automatically appeared in the DNS of all servers in the domain.  I do not recall if the new items were last, but I expect that they would be.
I have since reviewed the happenings with my associate and have a little more information.  The order of the problems and the actions taken are:
    1. Our primary (production) system was still working but extremely slow, and he observed that the slowness was caused by a lot of traffic with the remote site.  Rebooting the production server took over 25 minutes and the server to came up saying
that domain information was not available.  After another 30 minutes or so he discovered that the domain data was now available and the server worked, but still slow.
    2. He did not check to verify that roles were held by the remote server, but he transferred all roles from the remote to the production server using ntdsutil.  I would expect that if the role was not held by the remote, the transfer command would have
    shown that fact.
    3. He then tried to demote the remote server but had an error that it could not be demoted because "the active directory service is missing mandatory configuration information".
    4. He forcefully demoted the remote server.
    5. After rebooting the production server again performance was slightly better but still slow (and the rebood was still very slow).
    6. After some research he removed the remote domain controller's meta data from the production server and then rebooted the production server again.
At that point reboot was fast (under 5 minutes) and the production system was working at normal speed again.
All of the above leads me to believe that somehow the FSMO roles got added to, or moved to the remote site when I used the IFM file to create the new domain controller.  However nothing I have read says that this should happen.  I hope someone
here can give me a better answer as to what caused the problem, as I do not wish to interrupt our production system like this again.
    Thank you, Russ
PS: Sorry for the delay in getting back to this but some other priorities took me away from it for a week.

  • DFSR Replication Event ID 1202 The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller Additional Information: Error: 160 (One or more arguments are not correct.)

    Hi,
    hummmm...
The client had 1 Server with AD and All Apps, IIS, Terminal Servers (30 device Cal), File Server, SQL2008R2 on it
Task: Install new AD server promote it to DC,  bring in 2nd server, Replicate the File Server (DFSR) on these 2 servers, and demote it to standard server.
    1) Old AD with name "Server" with OS-2008R2 SP1 and is a DC.
    2) Brought in a new server "PrimaryAD", Installed 2008R2, done DC Promo, and added it as Additional Domain controller
    3) Transferred roles from old server "Server" to "PrimaryAD"
    4) Brought in a new File Server replicating server "Backup-Server"
    5) Copied all the data from Server to Backup-server as DFS initial file sync with robocopy
    6) here the problem started, after the copy finished, next morning the "Server" server crashed.....
    7) thank god the data was backed up on Backup-server. but we didnt get the time to Demote the server "Server" and remove AD from it.
    8) Since AD was replicated so "PrimaryAD" was are DC, brought 2nd Server "SecondaryDC" as additional domain controller.
    9) we cleaned up the metadata and used ASIEDIT to clean the remaining stuff.
    10) the "Server" server was formatted and renamed as "Primary-Server" and OS2008R2 SP1 was installed with rest of required apps
    11) so now the PrimaryAD the DC, SecondaryAD the Additional Domain controller, Primary-Server the mail server and File server, the Backup-server, the replicated server.
Now configured DFS Replication from Primary-Server to Backup-server and receive following Event ID 1202
If i Configure DFS Replication as follows
PrimaryAD <<>> SecondaryAD -= Works... no errors...
PrimaryAD <<>> Backup-Server = Creates but Dosent works Event ID 5012, error The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner BACKUP-SERVER, Additional Information: Error: 9026 (The connection is invalid)
PrimaryAD <<>> Primary-Server = Dosent creates replication job just hangs,
on primaryad continious Eveni ID 10009, DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer "SERVER" using any of the configured protocols
......something on PrimaryAD is still trying to connect to old corrupt AD server "Server"
No errors with AD replication, SYSVOL & Netlogon shares also working fine and accessible.
    DFS Diagnose report says
    DNS name: backup-server.mydomain.com
    Domain name: mydomain.COM
Reference domain controller: --           (HERE there is NO DOMAIN CONTROLLER mentioned)
    IP address: 192.168.1.248,192.168.1.251,::1
    Site: Default-First-Site-Name
Forgot to mention, gave full rights with ADSIEDIT to DFSR-LocalSettings  for all server to Administrator and read permissions to "Authenticated Users"
    DFSRDIAG POLLAD throws following error
    c:\Dfsrdiag pollad /verbose
    [INFO] Computer Name: BACKUP-SERVER
    [INFO] Computer DNS: Backup-Server.mydomain.COM
    [INFO] Domain Name: mydomain
    [INFO] Domain DNS: mydomain.COM
    [INFO] Site Name: Default-First-Site-Name
[INFO] Connected to WMI services on computer: Backup-Server.mydomain.COM
[INFO] Invoke PollDsNow() method on Backup-Server.mydomain.COM
[ERROR] PollDsNow method executed unsuccessfully. ReturnValue: 12 (0xc)
[ERROR] Failed to execute PollAD command Err: -2147217407 (0x80041001)
Can anyone point me to any direction which can lead to resolution of this ERROR and make DFS_R work..
    Thanks

    Hi,
It seems that DCPROMO did its work without complaints, still the DFSR references remained in AD. You could refer to the article below to clean up the DFS Replication object.

  • Two Essentials, one Domain Controller, one Member Server....

    Hi
is possible to install 2 Essentials Server : one as a Domain controller and one as a member server of the same domain?
If it's not possible, the second Essentials could be at least in Workgroup environment?
    thank you

Oh, I have no clue on demoting.  I am fairly certain that would be bad karma. I got lost when they stopped calling them Backup Domain Controllers. I cant see the forest for the trees.
I don't understand backup DC on a small local lan anyway.  I mean most of the time if the server is down, it needs to be fixed. In a branch/quicker logins perhaps. Or maybe a LOB app on a 3rd box, but would they not login with cached creds ?
If he really wants a second DC I think Server Standard and Cals is the way to go.  I do not see the advantage to adding the essentials role to a second server on the local lan for 13 users.
I don't suppose he can take it back, but he could take it home to backup his PC's there.  Me thinks he would be better off spending the money he spent on the second box for backups or even Storage Craft quick boot.  Server dies, you can be backup
in 10 minutes.  Or just save the second box for the hardware and do practice bare metal recoveries to it periodically

    Hi,
    Netdom is
a command-line tool that is built into Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. It is available if you have the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) server role installed. It is also available if you install the Active Directory
Domain Services Tools that are part of the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT).

  • Domain controller backup and recovery

We have  5 DCS 3 in one location and other 2 in another location
Considering the first location with 3 dcs, we have baremetal backup (windows server backup) configured for all 3 dcs
What will be the best way to restore/recover if one of the dc fails, does normal restore wouldnt give any errors?
    Amal RS

    Hi,
If you use AD integrated DNS zones, then System State backup contains the DNS data, your DNS data will get backed up along with your AD. If you run a DHCP server backup from the DHCP management console this is independent from the date, you are just to restore
    the one you need.
