Bevel and emboss not smooth

I am having issues using the bevel and emboss layer styles on my text. I am getting a stair stepping almost banding look on the bevel. It does this with any setting. Very noticable using the chisel  hard setting. It almost looks like lines are in the bevel. What could be causing this?  Thanks for any help

What could be causing this?
Normal behavior - because it's pixel-based, it uses thresholds to determine which semi-transparent pixels get "extruded" and which ones not, ultimately reflecting those pixel patterns in the final result. It's a limitation in most such effects and any additional operation that introduces more semi-transparent pixels intensifies the problem (such as 3D layers with filtering). Some tools like RevisionFX' Shade/Shape use additional code to reconstruct the edges and do a better job. Anyway, based on your image, even that may not be good enough. You are simply pushing too far IMO. What you seem to want would really be done much better with proper 3D geometry. If you can't and don't want to spend money on a plug-in, your best bet is to create a pre-comp with teh type as large as possible, apply the bevel, then scale it back in your main comp. When scaling down, at least a part of the streaks will be interpolated and thus the result look smoother...

  • Convert Bevel and Emboss Effect into Separate Layers

I was following a tutorial for making paint drips at http://www.planetphotoshop.com/dripping-color.html.
I am not sure which version of Photoshop was being used in the video. Maybe CS3 or 4? It looks like the video was created in 2008? Towards the end of tutorial (about the last 1/4), he converts the Bevel and Emboss effect into separate layers in order to delete the effect from the top and sides of the image. I can't seem to locate the "Create Layers" option when I control+mouse click on the layer. Is the "Create Layers" listed some place else or is there another way to remove the Bevel and Emboss effects from the top and sides only?

Layer > Layer Style > Create Layers
Which version do you work with?

  • Bevel and Embossed text

Hey guys...just wondering if anyone has a nice way of re-creating a Photoshop Bevel and Emboss effect for the text in Motion 3. I get a similar effect using the INDENT filter, but it's just not the same. Any thoughts?

    Hi,
welcome to the posts. NIce alias name, classy!
I had to look over the project again and it took me some time to sort it out. I made it in M2 and i think M3 does something funky.
The layer with the little t is the text layer. Should have called it something else like "indented text" to make it clearer I guess. In answer to your question the text layers blend mode is set to stencil luma which make it act like a stencil, and therefore shows the paper layer below. Then there is another paper layer below that to give the background. If you didnt do the stenciled paper layer it would look like some coloured text indented into the paper, which wasnt the original brief.
The spotlight is an M2 construct. Now of course we have lights in M3 so it becomes a bit easier.
Just a point to clarify. 'parenting' is really an AfterEffects idea, something that Motion doesnt do. instead you have to put things in groups, a bit like comping in AE, but more flexible.

  • Photoshop text + bevel and emboss on TRANSPARENT background?

I've created my Photoshop title images with text + bevel and emboss, on a transparent background.
I've Rasterized the type and I've merged down leaving the transparent background (not flattened) then saved as .psd or .tif (with layers).
When I import into FCP I either get the text WITH bevel and emboss, on a WHITE background or text WITHOUT bevel and emboss, on a TRANSPARENT background.
Strange thing is, I've imported Photoshop images with transparent backgrounds into FCP several times before and although I can't say I've never had problems, I've always managed to work it out quite easily. Not this time, I'm baffled and seriously considering getting cross!

    Hello,
I have tried the Ken Stone method (thank God for that guy...) but I am loosing my drop shadow and bevel effects on the text once the file is imported in FCP.. I used the NTSC preset with Transparent background in Photoshop. What am I missing? I have looked around in this forum and can't find a clear answer!!
    Any thoughts??

  • Bevel and emboss

so, after much research, i finally found out that you cannot create a bevel and emboss look like in photoshop. so i have created a very 'flat' looking logo in ai, but i want to add bevel and emboss layer effects. how does everyone else do this? i need the effects and the flexibility of a vector graphic. also, i have different layers in my ai file, and i need them to remain as layers when i open in photoshop.

nope, not even close to what i can achieve in ps. i've accepted the fact that there is no way to replicate the ps bevel and emboss in ai. that's fine with me. i just want to know what other graphic designers to do work around it. i can't imagine rasterizing the file at different sizes, then applying the effects in ps. or do you rasterize the file at a huge size then apply the effects in ps, then scale it down if need-be? either way, it sounds very 'clumsy.'

  • "bevel and emboss" in AI?

    hi,
    i have a logo:
    http://wtf2.myfonts.com/uploads/images/81/8125584acfd1f91a596bb5c0b19daf09.98563.jpeg
abd have the permission to use it, but they dont have an vector format of it :S
so i'm trying it at my self...
i have the right font, and used the "bevel and emboss" in pgotoshop. its nearly what i need, only other colors, and the horizontal parts had to keep going straight, now the vertical line "breaks" it:
    http://www.volgensbartjes.nl/musketiersPS.jpg
but the fact is, that i actualy want to make him in illustrator, but i cant find he right tools there. i have tryed:
http://www.volgensbartjes.nl/musketiersAI.jpg , but a you see, he makes the right part of each sword part of the R well, but he makes the left part of each zword part bigger :S
does anyone haveing a good idea how i could make this in illustrator, like how he is in photoshop, but than with the good horizontal parts, like the original?
    thanks...
    Bart
ps, this is not commercial, its for a amature musical group...
ps, if you speak dutch, please answer in dutch, thats easyer for me ;)

no, i post this in illustrator becouse i realy wanna do it in illustrator, i need to be able to move points later, so i can make parts longer as in the original is, and i also want to use the "sword font" later in other thingd, zo if its not a vector than anymore, i can never change anything anymore as its in photoshop....
i have also tryed to cut one part of the R, and give it the fiter as shown in the 3rd picture, but it keeps making strange things outside the part, while ive choosen for inside....
so if anyone knows an solution for illustrator? i really wanna know ;)

  • Bevel and Emboss filters?

It appears to me that Motion 1 doesn't have the same degree of filters for text that Photoshop does, or at least I haven't found them yet.
I did find the bevel border but that does not bevel the individual letters. I also found the color emboss in the stylistic group but that doesn't have near the capability that Photoshop does.
I realize I could create letters in Photoshop and import them but that seems inefficient.
Can anyone recommend any 3rd party filters that will accomplish the bevel and emboss effects directly in Motion?
    Hopefully at a reasonable price.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ken

    Specialcase,
    Thanks for the response.
I'm sure I'm as blind as a bat, but when I go to "add filter" with a text word selected in my copy of Motion 1.01 and choose "stylize", there is no word that begins with an "i" anywhere in the list. Indent is just not there.
Could that be a feature only in Motion 2? Or, do you think I might have a corrupt list of filters?

  • Text  bevel and emboss?  HELPPPPPP!

    Hi there everyone...
    I have a photo of a clock ...
    http://s409.photobucket.com/albums/pp175/Studentiermegs/?action=view&current=DSC_0679.jpg
and what I want to do is put some text onto the face, so it looks as though it is part of the clock... so like if I took a tool and carved into the back of the face and whatever I had carved appeared raised on the front. Hope that makes sence!
Have tried bevel and emboss and pattern maker to try and get the surface of the clock, but looks terrible so I must be doing something wrong, if I have the right idea at all!
    Help!
    Thanks

In your case the perspective will kill you. More or less I think you are not looking for a straightforward bevel and emboss at all, but rather a way to create the illusion of the stamped faces catching light. Even if you flatten bevel&emboss before transforming it, it will look goofy. Therefore I would recommend to create this in multiple layers. I suppose you should only create the shadowed areas using bevel&emboss on a white layer, then transform that and use multiply blendmode. Likewise, for the base you'd only use a slightly tinted version and use a blendmode. After that, I'd use Find Edges on a duplicate, remove all unwanted lines, blur it and place it on top to create the soft curvature you have on embossed plates. Might take some experimentation, but certainly will ook more "real" than a layer style only.

  • What are bevel and emboss styles ?

what are bevel and emboss styles?

    Hi Garry,
Check out this video tutorial on Bevel and Emboss effects:

  • Bevel and emboss like Photoshop

Is there any easy way to get something like the 'bevel and emboss' effect in Photoshop? Short of bringing the paths into Photoshop and applying it there, of course...
I was toying a little bit with doing something like that using the drop shadow effect, but the shadow has to come on the inside... Any tips?
I would prefer to have it as a live effect - I have done it manually with vectors by duplicating/offsetting/trimming, but it is a fair bit of work...

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Please Adobe, can't we have this as a raster effect in the next version of Illy!
    Please, NO.
Provide ordinary, tidy, efficient 2D-based bevel and extrude VECTOR path operations. Long overdue.

  • Mousewheel Scrolling and Typing not smooth anymore scince 10.5.2

Anybody else is having the Problem that Scrolling wiht a Mousewheel is not smmoth anymore scince the 10.5.2 upgrade? Also when i type the Letters on the screen appeaer a tiny bit later and its not responding smoothly anymore....

I'm having the exact same problem. Typing is very slow and lags behind as I type along. This along with the clamshell mode not working anymore with my external monitor, and I'm rolling back to 10.5.1 right now. Time to see how a timemachine full restore works...
This is the first apple update that has had this many problems for me. Maybe we're isolated cases, but if these types of problems are widespread, then somebody over at apple QA should be in hot water right now. This type of thing really kills customer satisfaction and loyalty...

  • Bevel and emboss for object, not text

Is there a way to apply a bevel to a shape that I created in Photoshop and "placed" into Illustrator? I know I can add the bevel in Photoshop, but I'm wondering if there's a way to do it in Illustrator as well.
    Thanks!

These methods work for object, not just text.

  • 3d bevel and emboss, the other side Deboss

I am trying to make an edging on a coin/icon. I want it to look like the photo. How do I create a debossed look in Illustrator. Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, in AI's 3D Extrude & Bevel tool, negative numbers aren't allowed, so it can't produce a deboss. You could possibly emboss <around> your desired deboss areas, to "fake" a deboss. However ...
In general, Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel generates so many errors that I only use it in very limited situations, certainly not where there are many shapes around a full circle, like the edge texture of a coin. (I've sent a bug report to Adobe about this.)
Because of these limitations, I wouldn't use AI to do what you need, unless you're willing to illustrate everything manually. There are other tools that might be worth trying, such as Photoshop - its lighting effects can use a "texture map" from an alpha channel for depth, which might work better for you. Here's a quick'n'dirty example of that idea in Photoshop using lighting effects on a slightly blurred object from AI, on a channel:
This method also allows both emboss and deboss.
    Good luck.  :+)

  • Text bevel and emboss options

    HI,
In a Spanish tutorial, I'm told to use "redondeado" (or rounded) as the structure technique.  No such option!   Only Smooth, Soft Chisel and Hard Chisel.
    What can I do?
    Regards,
    Ron

Yeah you did mention that your tooltips were'nt working.
Maybe a reset of the photoshop preferences will get them back.
