Bing search engine appearing out of nowhere (?)

Earlier today, I noticed that the Bing search engine was listed as the most recent addition to the Firefox search bar in my main profile (note: there seem to be no other traces of Bing in Firefox, the address bar has NOT been hijacked etc.) I have removed it by now (without trying whether therewas anything strange about it beyond its appearance there) but can't help wondering how it got there.
Further research in Windows Explorer suggests that the engine was installed on August 25 at 6:40pm, which -- again going by Windows Explorer info -- must have been about 25 minutes after 4.0b4 was installed and about 10 minutes after I first accessed this particular profile in 4.0b4.
Unfortunately, I have no history left from that day and thus can't reproduce my browsing history; I also don't recall anything surprising and certainly didn't consciously add Bing. My system seems fine otherwise, and Kaspersky IS + NoScript + a very careful attitude towards browsing usually tend to do a great job at keeping my system clean. Does anyone have any ideas what this might have to do with, whether this might have appeared through "legit" channels? Thanks for any info!

Maybe you have MS software that added it.<br />

  • Bash console appeared out of nowhere in dock

    Hi,
I have just had the Bash console appear out of nowhere on my dock. It doesn't show anything in history command. Im using Yosemite, am i safe?
Also i installed Sopcast last week and I'm unable to delete, what do you think? connected? How can i delete this program? it won't drag to the trash!
    Regards,
    Darren

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

You installed the "Genieo/InstallMac" rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the rootkit (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
In the Applications folder, there may (or may not) be an application named "Genieo". Genieo may be partially installed even if this item is absent. If it's present, select it and open the Finder Info window. If it shows that the Version is less than 2.0, download and install the current version from the genieo.com website. This may seem paradoxical, since the goal is to remove it, but you'll be saving yourself some trouble as well as the risk of putting the system in an unusable state.
There should be another application in the same folder named "Uninstall Genieo". After updating Genieo, if necessary, launch "Uninstall Genieo" and follow the prompts to remove the "newspaper-style home page." Restart the computer.
This step does not completely inactivate Genieo.
    Step 2
Don't take this step unless you completed Step 1, including the restart, without any error messages. If you didn't find the Genieo application, or if you couldn't complete Step 1 for any reason, stop here and ask for instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
    ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. There's no need to restart after each one. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
    Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this software. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Genieo developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the perpetrator of the scam sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." He will tell you to run the provided uninstaller, while lying about what it does. As he knows and intends, the uninstaller does not completely remove the malware.

  • I open my email and the Bing search box appears, this does not happen when using Internet Explorer

When using the browser, when I go to aolmail and open my email account and click on my mail to open a message to read. The mail opens and content shows for a quick second and then goes blank. The Bing search box appears in the email content section. If I use internet explorer there is no problem. The email can be read. I am using firefox 3.6.15, home vista.

That problem can be caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links in that part of the screen not clickable.

When combining AND with OR in the SQL where clause, you need to use parenthesis to explicitly say how you want logic to be combined.
In addition, if someone does not make a selection, or chooses 'Select All', then do not include that column in the where clause at all. You do this by dynamically building the where clause;  check the values from the submission and if they are not null, add them to the where clause, otherwise do not add them.

  • Black vertical bar with lines on Macbook pro screen Appeared out of nowhere

I was working on my computer late at night. Like always.
I went to bed, and left the computer on in it's screen saver , as I always do.
When I woke up I had a black vertical bar on the screen about 1 1/2 inch thick with some flickering lines next to it.
here is what it looks like: http://www.talkcitee.com/ourspaceimages//2coolcode/2coolcode.jpg
I don't believe this to be a memory problem, I can take snapshots of the full screen, and I can hook up an external monitor with no problem. Also restarded PRAM plenty of times, etc.
But this black bar appeared out of nowhere. As if one way my screen decided it was going to blow out on me out of nowhere. I've had this MacBook for 2 years.
Question is, do you think the problem is:
    a) the screen
    b) connection / short problem to the screen inside the macbook
I hope it's B , because they told me it would cost $800 to replace the screen which is stupid cus I can get a new macbook pro for less than that.
I think there is a connectivity problem with the hardware , possibly a short, or something messed up with the wires or pins that link to the screen.
I noticed after repeatedly opening and closing the macbook, there were some changes in the small flickering lines next the big bar, and some of them turned solid black.
Has this happened to anybody else before?

Usually what happens is that over time the cable comes loose from the back. This happens because the enclosure within the hinge housing is quite tight and the LVDS cable has little room to move around. Because of the frequent opening and closing on the lid, the cable starts to move out of place try opening and closing it a few times and push it back very gently. You might see the line disappear or decrease slightly.

  • How do I get Firefox to open a blank website when I open a new tab and not this "Bing" search engine page?

Whenever I open a blank tab I'm taken to some page where I can search the web with a search engine called Bing. This isn't a major problem but it causes a LOT of annoyance since the cursor is right in the search engine box and not in the address bar like before. Like I said, not a major problem, just annoying and I'd like it fixed if I can.

  • Genieo search engine appeared, how do i remove?

    Hi,
I updated my Safari last night, and now I keep getting Genieo as my search engine when it is set to google. I did not ask for Geneio, and I do not want it. How do I remove it? I have searched on my finder and can't find any files with the word genieo in it. Any help would be appreciated to help me remove this from my laptop so I can carry on using the google search engine.
    Help fast please....
    Thanks

You installed the "Genieo" search-hijacking rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will deactivate any version of the rootkit that I know of.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /etc/launchd.conf
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder may open with a file selected, or the file may not exist, in which case you'll get a message that it can't be found. If it does exist, it's a configuration file created or replaced by the Genieo installer. Any software installer that does this should be considered ipso facto malware. Move the file to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Then restart, empty the Trash, and continue as below.
IMPORTANT: If the launchd.conf file exists, you must move it to the Trash and restart before continuing. Otherwise the system may become unbootable. In that case, restore from your backup and start over. That's how badly Genieo has sabotaged your system. If you're not sure you can complete this step, stop here and ask for guidance.
Some installations of Genieo don't include the launchd.conf file, perhaps because it has already been removed. The absence of that file doesn't mean that Genieo is not installed.
    Step 2
Quit the Genieo application, if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way as above:
    /Applications/Genieo.app
    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo.app
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
There's no need to restart after each one. Again, some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found.

  • Firefox is not able to connect to Google, Yahoo, MSN or Bing search engines. I get a message there is a connection problem the diagnose tool comes up empty.

The problem seemed to begin when I installed ICQ and the ICQ search becuase the defult. I have uninstalled ICQ but norice the search is still embeeded in IE. ICQ search is the only search i am able to use at this time.

Thanks again - Alas, I've been there. Deleted Search a dozen times, at least, and tried installing it, initially using a PowerShell script (tried several scripts actually, from full-blown total Search Applications with extensive topologies to the most basic
of basics 'please just start without showing me errors'), PowerShell line-by-line to see where things went South, next tried installing through Central Admin (hoping that it was my own stupidity in overlooking things and hoping The System would get it right

I have set the tab setting not to open new windows in a new tab and I have set it to open windows in a new tab and nothing changes.

    Hi,
       You can try with this:
You can create a new com.sap.km.cm.basicsearch iview from template.
Then, edit it and one of its field is: Layout Set for Search Results, here you can specify your layout.
I mean, you can duplicate SearchResultLayoutSet standard layout set. (system administration->system configuration->km->cm->user interface->setting->layout.
After that, you modify its Resource Renderer. There you can see Target Window Type field (show advanced options), replace blank value by self ( The resource is opened in the same window)
