Black Screen (Not Death Screen)

Ok, here's my problem.  Every so often (More often now) my LCD screen would go black and become Non-Detected by my windows operating system. My external monitors all connect and can be detected but this one can not. I have checked my LCD Bulb and it is fine, my inverter is fine aswell and so is my graphics card. I know this because my screen was working yesterday and the screen was Detected then. I am doing an inverter check later on today and as for my graphics card, well it wouldn't be showing up on my external monitor if it were bad. I honestly have no earthly idea why this is happening but I am wondering if my computer needs to have a Reflow done on it. It is an Compaq Presario Cq61 and I purchased it in 2010. If anyone knows anything I would really enjoy the help. Thanks.

I am speaking about my Internal LCD screen not an external monitor. Every external monitor I connect to my laptop displays perfectly fine and can be Detected when i select "Screen Resolustion".
This is what happen If i put my laptop into hibernate for an hour or so and wake it up the screen will display SOMETIMES not all the times (Does not Happen Every Time). I have already replaced the Video Cable with another geniune cable. It did nothing. I checked the graphics chip and my Ram sticks, also found nothing wrong. I'm wondering if it could actually be the LCD screen itself or the Inverter that sends the power.
I don't think it is the LCD though and the reason behind that is because it still comes on occasinonally and when it comes on it STAYS on, there's no flickering of any sort, no turning off, no color changes, no stand stills or any types of problems until I have to shut down my computer.
I have called for support and the only thing they keep telling me is they'll have to look at it for 149.99$ the make and model of this laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ61 (2009)
This is what I meant. The internal vga cable. It could be a buggy vga driver. I had a netbook that had an issue when it came from hibernation and it was a bad graphics driver (Windows one). BTW: My Dv6 laptop went straight to BSOD after waking up from hybernantion. However, I don't use Windows so didn't bother much about it.

  • Iphone (not so) black screen of death?!?! :(

    heyall,
my battery was almost dead on my iphone and it shut off. now it wont turn back on completely. the screen is on but it's just a dim black screen and i cant do anything with it... help?

There is no such thing as a "soft reset" in Apple terminology.
If a reset does not rectify, try putting the device in DFU mode (google it) and restore as new.
If that fails, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

  • I am using an iphone 3Gs and Itunes won't allow me to restore it?!?! help me fix my black screen of death!

Ok, I am trying to restore my iPhone 3Gs to 5.0.1 and when I do, it looks like it is going well until it says that is it preparing to restore, it keeps me stuck at that spinning bar and then after a while it gives me the error 1601 unknown error has occurred.  I have tried looking on Google for over 3 hours now trying to find the answer to my problem and sadly I cant find one, I am trying to restore my IPhone because earlier I was playing with it and it ran out of battery and I let it change and walked away form it, I came back 1 hour later and it was still at the boot logo of apple, I waited 2 hours and it did nothing, just stayed with the boot logo.  I then put it into DFU mode and it appears in iTunes as in DFU mode and can be restored but like I said above that it just gives me an error.  I have looked into Google and tried every way possible and found out that I may have the black screen of death.  If you have this problem and found a way other than getting a new iPhone, please contact me on this page because I am not in the mood to buy a new iPhone because this one has an expired warranty.
Also i have tryed all the things in the error support page and nothing works, uninstalled itunes completely and did all that other stuff but still the same problem and i have not found a way to fix this.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Black screen of death after warning "Disk 1 has the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system. "

    Hi,
I am having the same problem / event warning, only one second after the warning occurs, I face a black screen of death leaving me with no other option than to switch off and reboot. After reboot I can work for some time but as far as I can see there is a
spontaneous re-occurance of the same warning and subsequent black screen of death.
It is hugely frustrating and don't seem to be able to solve it. It occurred in W8/W8.1 and W10 TP. All hardware seems fine. There are no other events that occur near the time when the BSOD occurs so I suppose its that.
HD (SSD'S) seem to have unique identifiers so I don't understand it at all. It does not matter whether I am browsing the internet, rendering images or simply leaving my laptop untouched (M6500 DELL).
Please help. It occurs 3 - 5 times a day and it seems unworkable.
    Mike

    Hi MAVH2014,
Which version are you running? Do you installed all updates for current Technical Preview?
Can you find any related events in Event Viewer?
For your disk identifier issue, if you have checked them already, I suggest you use following command to change the value:

  • White screen of death going temporarily black screen of death.

I have a iphone4s that went white-screen-of-death on me just last week. recently its now giving me a multi-coloured screen show, and a finale of black-screen-of-death. Not sure what to do, and whether its worth going to the apple store when I can't afford repairs, and its a year out of warranty. I can still answer calls, or access apps, etc, but can't see what I'm actually doing.

  • W700 - Random, frequent. Black Screen of Death

    Hello,
I have a W700 that I acquired in june 2010 and that I enjoyed very much until the beginning of this summer.
Gradually I started to get black screens of death, no cursor, no response, no solution but to hard reset the computer.
At first it was only when I used one kind of browser, then all kind of browsers, then any progran then just at any time. At its worst it became a real russian roulette, any minutes I could get a crash no matter what I was doing but any activities increased crash chances.
I tested all my hardware, more specifically cpu, motherboard, ram, hard drive and graphic cards with various programs but they all returned a green light, a-ok. "no problem here".
I did maintenance on my registry, hard drive, culled unneeded start-up programs, upgraded drivers. Finally the crashes were so frequent I installed ubuntu.
Ubuntu did not cause any single crash in a couple months, reinforcing me in the idea that the problem was software in nature.
Yesterday I received a windows 7 ultimate and I reinstalled windows ... and after a few hours, after doing the updates and reinstalling programs, it started crashing again.
(By the way, my DVD player isn't reading dvds anymore I found out yesterday, that is also quite annoying)
Now, as I can number the installed programs on one hand, it crashes... moderately often.
So ... does anybody have any idea what causes these crashes and what I could do to stop them ? I would be very very very very very grateful for any help in the matter.
    Thanks in advance : )

I tried to do the FurMark stress test and, indeed, it crashed after a while.
However a few weeks ago I did a GPU stress test with another program ( I forgot its name but it was rendering an earth in increasing details) and it passed without crash.
Since it crashes no matter what program I use and how intensive graphically it is, I am not sure how conclusive the fact it crashed during FurMark is.
(As I said, for a time the most stable activity I could do on this computer was play a MMORPG, which was noticeably more intensive graphically than, browsing internet).
I don't know ... I would be very happy if the cause of the problem was something I could fix since I really don't have the cash to buy a brand new computer right now.
Anyway, thanks for the help : )

  • Anyone else getting the BLACK screen of death after Kitkat 4.4 update?

Ever since the update, my phone is wacked, like everyone elses.  I got my Samsung Galaxy S4 a month ago.  Beautiful, loved it.  Update happens: I want to pitch this thing as far as I can throw it.
The phone rings.  I go to answer it but all I have is a BLACK SCREEN which is LOCKED.  I have the lock on the screen, but if the screen is black, you can't see it - and you can't answer the phone!    One day, I got a message, and could not get to that.  Why?  the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.
Someone told me to turn off Samsung Watch On and that has helped with some of the issues.  But I still get the screen occasionally, and my battery life is GONE.
How do we get rid of this update?   Should I just call Verizon and get a new phone with the OLD software?  I hate this.  I feel like I was the victim of bait and switch.

ltg123 - did you resolve the problem yet?  If so, let me know how.
My (hopefully temporary) solution was to turn off my "Lock Screen" ... to do this, go to Settings, My Device, Lock Screen ... and select None.
The only issue is that you would no longer have any security for your phone and would be vulnerable to someone stealing your phone and having full access to whatever is on your phone that does not require a separate id and password.  Dangerous, yes ... but, for me right now, it's better than not having any access to my own phone!
The Android update simply sucks ... some heads should roll for allowing such a crappy update to get (no pun intended) rolled out.

  • Fix For nvlddmkm.sys Black Screen Of Death

I think I finally found a fix for the Black Screen of Death from the bug with nviddmkm.sys and all the latest Nvidia Drivers.  This works on my IQ816 with NVIDIA 9600GS, it should work for most TouchSmarts that are having the random black screens.
There is a free utility called RivaTuner that works with Nvidia cards.  You can get it here:
    http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163#download
    Do the following:
    Install Rivatuner.
Click okay when it gives you the box about not being a supported card or whatever.
On the screen that comes up, click the tiny icon next to Customize, it's under Driver Settings in the middle of the screen.  Then click on the icon for the card.  It looks like a videocard and should be the first icon on the left.
At the core clock screen, click the checkbox at the top to enable.  Click Detect Now when it asks for it.  Set the dropdown on the right to 3D.  Then set the core clock slider to 550 or as close as you can get to it.  I had 551.
You can either check off start with Windows or wait and see if it's okay and then come back to this screen and check Start with Windows.  That will make sure the setting will stay all the time.  Otherwise it just reverts back to the original settings.
Click okay.  And that should be it.
If you need help, watch the video tutorial on it here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU8_EMjSUf4
So far, since I did this, no random black screens of death.  So this may be it.
    This question was solved.

PowerBook G4 - Won't Start Up - 3 Strange Beeps then just LED flashes and sudden death - black screen.
Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have
black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
But it is the faulty Logic board?
Could anyone help me out? Please.
I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.
Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

But it is the faulty Logic board?
There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.
If you tell us your approximate geographic location, we can see what's available nearby. I'm also retired, and and visiting my wife's family this week so have even more time than usual to help you search.

  • How do you solve the so called "Black Screen Of Death " On an iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 and 2374

According to various forums I've visited , this is very common issue that Apple has not addressed. I've read that it could be a logic board issue on the graphics card or a LED driver board issue or even a temp problem. My friend just got this issue resolved on her MacBook Pro but it cost her $500 to have it taken care of. This problem is making Apple look very bad in the eyes of it's customer's. I won't post some of the negative comments I've come across on these forums as a result of consumer frustration with Apple not taking care of this. Let's just say it needs to be addressed. Oh and the " Black Screen Of Death " is what people are calling it, not sure of the official problem name but it's an intermittent tendency of the display to go completely black while the OS is running fine.

  • 10.4.8 Black Screen of death

    On MacBook.
Updating from 10.4.6 to 10.4.8 (combined) update causes Black Screen of Death on restart. Reinstall (archive) from distribution 10.4.6 fixes. This is repeatable.

Yeah this is also happening on my Mac Pro. After the update reboots, I get the kernel panic screen. I am using a stripped raid boot disk and wonder if this is the issue. I had issues with the last firmware update because of the raid drive. It's repeatable... Archive and install is not an option at the moment as I can't seem to find my install disks (apple is sending me replacements for free -- wish they were downloadable... [email protected]).
I have a full backup (using superduper) and when I tried to restore it still kernel panic'd. So it must be doing something to the partitioning scheme?? weird..
Only after I blow away the raid volume, rebuild the partitions and re-create the raid drive, will the restore work.
I'm going to wait for my install disks and do some install tests on clean installs as my disk usage is too large (~450GB).

  • IPad 1 - Black Screen (Black Screen of Death)

My iPad has a black screen.  I call it the "Black Screen of Death".  The iPad is fully charged, is recognized in iTunes, will NOT reset by holding down both buttons for any length of time, and I have taken it to an Apple store where I was told they don't know what the problem is but I could purchase a refurbished iPad for $250.
This is the 4th time the screen has gone black.  Each time I have been able to use my iPad is from doing a "restore" in iTunes.  The restore did NOT work the first time, the second time or third time.  I can't be sure how many times I used the restore function.  I can only say that each time after several "restore" attempts, I've "given up" on my iPad and let it sit for an unspecified period of time.  When I decided to address the iPad again, I clicked the bottom button and the Apple logo appeared.  My iPad loaded up and then I connected to iTunes to load all my apps, music, etc.  This last time, my iPad was up and running for only two days before the screen went black again.  I was playing a game (app) when this occurred.
I am POSITIVE there are thousands of users out there experiencing the same problem but I have yet to read as to why this is happening.  I believe users are tired of hearing "hold both buttons to reset" and "take it to the Apple store".  Many iPads users are past their warranty, would like a possible or valid reason as to why their iPad is malfunctioning and a reliable software update solution or "do it yourself" remedy.
Is there anyone out there that can address our concerns with an explanation that "sounds" reasonable or a real solution and not the two standard responses?

  • MacBook Pro June 2009 NVIDIA 9600 black screen of death

    Hi there,
I am thinking of buying a new MacBook Pro June 2009 with dual graphics.
    1.
As I read about the issues the MacBook Pro has in regards to graphics related to NVIDIA 9600 GT,
black screen of death, I would like to know if anything has changed regarding the NVIDIA 9600 GT
as it is still the same graphic card Apple is using for the latest MacBook Pro series.
Of course I know that Apple does not build it, however are there any informations that NVIDIA has performed changes on its graphic card that the widely discussed long term heat issues relating to the black screen of death will not appear in the latest model series?
    2.
As I mainly use PS for picture editing I also would like to know how much this will conflict with the 9600 graphic card in the long term. Are there any users with black screen of death experience that were using PS as their main picture editing software where the issue appeared?
    3.
Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
I thank you very much for all thoughts about the subject.

Hi pictureswithPS, welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. I have an original late-2008 unibody MBP that was purchased a week after the introduction. I have never had a single "black screen of death" ever, and I do some gaming under OS X on my machine. The heat issues are, in my humble opinion, greatly exaggerated. Does the machine get warm? Yes. However, any computer with this much power in this thin of an enclosure is going to get warm. Mine has never crashed, frozen, black screened, etc. once.
    2. I don't think PS is particularly intensive on the graphics card. It may use the graphics card, yes, but I don't think it will be quite as intensive as a 3D modeling application or 3D games. I would doubt you would ever run into problems anyway.
    3. Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
No, it wouldn't likely void the warranty. However, if your fans die prematurely as a result of running them at high speeds for extended periods of time, I doubt Apple would be especially happy about replacing them. I do not use any 3rd party tools to manage my fans, and never will. It is simply not necessary.

  • Qosmio X875-Q7290 Black Screen of Death

    Hey everyone,
My dad purchased a Qosmio back in 2012 for work. It's a powerhouse that can pretty much accomplish any job. Here are the specs, and then I'll get into my problem:
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    System Model: Qosmio X875
    BIOS: InsydeH2O Version 03.72.306.30
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
    Memory: 16384MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M
    Display Memory: 4095 MB
My dad passed shortly after he purchased the laptop so I then took it over and brought it to college with me. There was an incident where my motherboard completely fried and Toshiba fixed it for me. I was extremely greatful and left notes for the staff in my box when it shipped to Toshiba, haha.
It's been over a year since that incident and now I have come across another. I'm a heavy gamer and, until 4 days ago, have had a flawless experience. The black screen of death has only emerged recently and seems to be increasing in frequency.
Usually this happens when I am gaming, however it has also happened when the computer is simply idle. Everything will be running just fine and suddenly the screen will go black, the keyboard becomes unresponsive, and if there was sound it is stuck in a loop. The only way to remedy the situation is to hard shut down the computer and restart it.
Since the first incident I have been diligent in monitoring heat which has never gone over 71c even in my heaviest of game play. I have also uninstalled and re-installed the most current video driver. I have run multiple virus checks, I have cleaned the computer inside and out, defragged the harddrive (Well not really out of the ordinary I do it every wednesday), and have also done general clearing and cleaning of any unnecessary files.
Still, no matter what I do, I am getting this Black Screen of Death. I have followed many guides and suggestions which have done nothing. When I reinstalled my video driver I did, atleast, get about 1.5 hours of gameplay which my heart was then crushed because it happened again.
I am WELL over my warrenty... And can not afford to take my computer to a profession / send it in to Toshiba. I'm moving soon, as I have just finished college, and have yet to find a job.
Any advice or questions are welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

It's hard to know for sure, but it does sound like a hardware failure that would require servicing. RAM would probably be an easy place to start if you were looking to do hardware troubleshooting yourself.
As an aside, if you just copy WoW to an external drive and copy it back, it'll work without needing to go through a lengthy install/download process. You'll need to install the Launcher though of course. In fact, D3 works the same way. You might already know that, but it makes it easy to back them up.
