Block Attachments by File Type

We have requirement where we want to block emails with attachment type :
.ade .cmd .eml .ins .mdb .mst .reg .url .wsf .adp .com .exe .isp .mde .pcd .scr .vb .wsh .bas .cpl .hlp .js .msc .pif .sct .vbe .bat .crt .hta .jse .msi .pl .scx .vbs .chm .dll .inf.lnk .msp .pot .shs .wsc… etc.
Some of these extensions are not listed in File type under content filter. Please let me know the alternate way to block the same.

You will be best suited to create a message filter to scan and drop.  Similar to:
attach_drop: if (attachment-filename =='(?i)\\.(ade|cmd|eml|ins|mdb|mst|reg|url|wsf|adp|com|exe|isp|mde|pcd|scr|vb|wsh|bas|cpl|hlp|js|msc|pif|sct|vbe|bat|crt|hta|jse|msi|pl|scx|vbs|chm|dll|inf|lnk|msp|pot|shs|wsc)$'){
drop();
See the User Guide for full details on message filter, and examples.  They may contain a better solution, and provide you full details on getting started, tweaking.

  • Blocking attachments of file type .icl

    Hi
We would like to configure our IronPort server to drop attachments of type iCal (.icl). However I can not find that file type under file types in the Attachment file info File type is. Is there some way to add a custom file type in IronPort? Or will it work with adding a filename contains *.icl type of condition?
In the log it shows the attachment as a name of meeting.icl but I dont know if all the iCal meetings has that name or if that meeting simply was named that way.

    Hello Andreas,
easiest way would be matching to the file name with the file name  action in message or content filter (I suppose you'd not need a  condition for that, because an action drop-attachment-by-filename is  already a perfect fit, and makes the filter easier).
In theory, there is also a message filter condition  called "attachment-binary-contains", which let's you enter a binary  pattern, i.e. a magic number for a given file type. However, this  condition has no corresponding action to drop that attachment, so it  would be only useful to quarantine or drop a whole message.
    Hope that helps,
    Andreas

You can create a Deny URL rule, using a wildcard (*) and an extension
(e.g. .mp3). Put that higher in the rules list than any Allow rule which
would otherwise let that URL go through. If you have proxy
authentication working, you can assign the deny rule to users, groups or
containers to selectively deny that traffic.
Sooner or later though, you will probably find that someone gets cute and
starts changing the extensions on files, or removing them, at least for
ones they put up on their own websites.

  • Sending attachments the file extension is dropped, using Mac?

When I send attachments (various file types) the people receiving the file does not have an extension. Is there a setting on my Mac or Thunderbird that is hiding the extension??

It's more likely that your recipients have their systems set to "hide extensions for known file types", which is the default Windows setting. Although, it's also possible, for some file types, that TB fails to properly encode the attachment.
What happens when you send attachments to yourself, or receive attachments from others?

  • Ability to block file types from websites

    Hi All,
Seeming the knowledge base wasnt much help and I cant get through to support.
I was hoping someone here could help.
I am trying to create a policy which will block downloads only for webmail sites. I do not want any users able to download any attachments from webmail sites.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Josh,
    Thanks for the reply.
Couldnt get hold of support as my S160 gives this error message
    The Critical message is:
Internal SMTP giving up on message to [email protected] with subject 'IronPort S160 Support Request for ironport.domain.com.au [Ability to\n\tblock filer type downloads]': Unrecoverable error.
Product: IronPort S160 Web Security Appliance
    Model: S160
    Version: 5.6.0-623
    Serial Number: ##
    Timestamp: 02 Apr 2009 16:56:55 +1100
obviously I have removed my real domain name and serial number.
Obviously email works as the unit itself was able to email me the error and I have checked the settings are correct.
Can someone provide a link in the KB for how to setup a poicy to block all downloads from a web site.
    Thanks

  • "uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version" error message when opening a *.doc file with Word already running

Several customers running different versions of Office 2011 (14.4.1-14.4.5) on OSX varying from 10.7.5 to 10.9.5, running on various kinds of hardware (iMac/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air) of various ages are having issues opening *.doc files if the Word is already open. The error message that gets displayed is, "XXXX.doc uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version"
When the customer tries to open the same file via File-Open, she gets "The file is locked for editing. you can open the file as read-only".
When trying to do so, she gets "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters".
If Word gets Force-quit, the same document opens without any problems.
    1. Repairing Disk permissions was ran several times. and the volume was found to be OK.
    2. I have noticed that in this scenario either deleting the normal.dotm or com.microsoft.word.plist (~/Library/Preferences) sometimes resolves the issue, sometimes it doesn’t. There is no pattern to follow. All versions of Office are affected, the fully updated and the non-updated ones.
    3. I have tried completely removing the suite using Office 2011 Uninstall.app and/or Remove Office 2011 Uninstaller.pkg, then going through customer's library and manually removing all the Office references.
    4. None of these systems had Office 2008 in the past.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reboot both the Mac and the server. Word opens .DOC files and Excel opens .XLS files. As you have found out by copying the files to the computer. It is the connection between the 2 computer that is causing the error.

  • I installed WIN 7 and can't open many attachments.  Message says it is not a supported file type ?

After I replaced WIN XP with WIN 7 many attachments won't open.   Message says Adobe Reader (using Adobe X) can't open "xxxxxxxxx.pps" because it is either not a supported file type or because the  file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an e-mail attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)  This never happened with WIN XP.  Any suggestions  nykirk

How are you trying to open them?
I ask because a .pps is a Powerpoint slide show and Adobe REader only opens PDF's.
So, are you double clicking on a file and REader is trying to open them or are you opening Reader then using File>Open and navigating to the file or something else. As many details as you can supply would be good.

I'm unable to email PDF attachments, this has started in the last 2 weeks - any clues why as other file types are sending?

    Greetings,
That is rather strange. Attachments are attachments.  The big difference between what will send and what won't is usually either who you are sending it to (wrong email address) or how big the attachment is (most email providers have a limit to the total message size between 10 MB and 20 MB).
-- What happens when you say you are "unable to email PDF attachments"?  What error message do you get?
-- Are you sending these emails using the Mail program?
-- What is the file size of the PDF you are trying to send?
-- What happens if you compress the PDF before you email it (Highlight the PDF on the desktop and then go to File > Compress) ?
-- What happens if you send the PDF to yourself?
    Cheers.

  • When I attach a JPG file in my email and send it to a Windows friend they get the message "The file type being saved or retrieved has been blocked when they try to open it." Anyone know why and how to fix this problem?

When I attach a JPG file in my email message and send it to a Windows friend they get the message "The file type being saved or retrieved has been blocked when they try to open it so that they can save it." Anyone know why and how to fix this problem?

Your Windows friend should ask in a Windows forum why his email client won't open attached jpg files. We have no idea what email client he is using or how his Windows security is configured.

  • Can you block file types???

Can you block certain file types from playing to force users to have a standardized file type to be uploaded to the server?  For example, if we decide we do not want .wav files played on the server, is there a configuration setting to block/stop a .wav from playing from the server?  I want to standardize the server and force end users to copy only certain file types into the vod folder.

That would be in the technology you use to upload the files.
If you build out a server side solution that would upload files to your web server you could do that, but no, FMS is about streaming what's already there or creating new files.  It doesn't care how it got there...
Something like this:  http://www.inaflashuploader.com/ might work for you.  ( I think there's a max size limit to the files you can upload. just FYI )
**disclaimer i have not used this I just googled for a flash + php upload script **

  • Limit File type attachments  in I-Supplier portal

  • Trying to find answers for the question "Why is this file type blocked from being uploaded into SharePoint"

At least once a month - sometimes much more frequently - I get calls from users asking why the file extension they "need" to upload to SharePoint is blocked.
Most recently, it was a Microsoft Access database that the user was attempting to upload to a document library. Before that, it was a shortcut link (*.url). And so on.
Is there a reference document which goes over the reasons why specific file types are blocked?
    Thanks!

Each blocked file format has it's own reasons for not being allowed to be stored on a SharePoint library.
Some of them are blocked because they would be processed by SharePoint Servers during the upload/download sequences, thus, possibly corrupting the system ( like dll files ). Others would cause Crawl to break ( url files ).
The Access database files are blocked for two valid reasons. First, because saving "live" to those files using Windows explorer window ( WebDAV ) doesn't work. Second because SharePoint product managers want us to use SharePoint lists instead.
    And it does makes sense.
If you're in the middle of a migration from file servers to a SharePoint solution, your people could use these situations to stop and think about it for a little:
Really ? Now that we have SharePoint, couldn't we do things a little bit differently ?

  • Block File Types from KM Repository

Is there any way to block particular file types (i.e. .avi, .wmv) from KM repositories?  We do not want users to be able to load particular types of files to our SAP Portal environment.

    Hi Jon.
Open Config Tool > cluster-data > Instance > Server > General Tab and add Java parameter '-Dcom.sap.km.forbiddenext=exe,avi' (modify exact values per your needs). Save and repeat the same procedure for all cluster instances. Restart cluster.
