Bluetooth keyboard crashes front row

Hello,
I've patched Front Row to work on a G5 in 10.4.11 with "Activate Front Row 0.1". I should say that the same problem I'm about to describe happened in 10.4.10 with another patch program...seems to be the BT keyboard, but not sure.
Front Row will be humming along nicely and then shows the "keyboard lost connection" text with the keyboard icon, then, poof! It just flashes off...no warning or crash panel afterwards or anything, just poof.
Anyone else have something similar?
thank you.

I have the same problem but also wanted to use the F13 thru F19 to launch programs and web browsers I use regularly. I called Apple Tech Support since I just got the new keyboard and was told that Leopard does not allow the user to program the function keys. The Tech Support sent me an article (http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n42674/) that says MAC OS 9 allowed the user to program function keys but not OS X.
I seems strange to me that Apple would come out with a great keyboard and have 7 function keys ( 9 counting F5 and F6) that cannot be programmed with a brand new 10.5 operating system. The Tech Support told me to check out third party software but I have not been able to find any third party software that would allow me to program the function keys. I'd be interested in buying the software if anyone knows if it exists.
I hope Apple corrects this problem in future OS updates. Why make a keyboard with function keys that cannot be programmed?

  • Apple Bluetooth Keyboard crashes MBPro

I normally use the Apple USB keyboard and a Magic Mouse on my MacBook Pro 15", Core i7 when I'm at home and using the external monitor. Today, I decided to try my Apple Bluetooth keyboard to see if I would like using a keyboard without the keypad when I'm at home like I have to do when traveling. I just made the connection this morning and within 4 hours I got 2 kernel panic crashes of the MacBook Pro. The USB keyboard was still connected at the time but pushed back on the desk throughout.
After the 2nd one, I turned the bluetooth keyboard off and went back to the USB one and have not had another crash for over 4 hours. I still have the Magic Mouse connected via Bluetooth and it continues to work just fine. Laptop has all available updates applied that are available as of today.
Anyone else ever see this symptom or anything like it?

I might be seeing something somewhat like this, but I don't have a great solution to offer.
I recently got a new MacBook Pro while traveling. Now that I'm home again and have my Bluetooth peripherals available, I notice that Bluetooth keeps cutting out. I have one Apple Wireless keyboard at home and one at work. I have a third-party Bluetooth mouse at each location, and a "notebook mouse" that I carry as well. This last is generally turned off, but I've pulled it out to try it when the problem strikes. It seems to suffer the same general problem as the other peripherals. (I also like to use the MacBook Pro with the lid closed, plugged into an external display. I sometimes have USB and FireWire 800 devices connected as well.)
Often when I switch between home and work, Bluetooth becomes unresponsive. Sometimes neither the keyboard nor mouse works. Sometimes one will, but once I turn Bluetooth off, I can't turn it back on. I've had one definite kernel panic (multilingual gray screen), and a couple of cases where I couldn't tell because the computer had a black screen and was simply unresponsive.
What prompted me to turn to the forum was what happened a few minutes ago. Both keyboard and mouse were working fine this morning. The mouse low-battery indicator light began flashing, so I replaced the batteries, but the MacBook Pro would not recognize the mouse. The keyboard continued to work. I turned off Bluetooth, but then I could not turn it on again. Of course, neither peripheral works now.
I've discovered that, while simply restarting the MacBook Pro does not help restore Bluetooth, shutting down, waiting a minute, and then restarting does. Not an ideal solution, but it works until I can get a better fix.

  • Front Row DVD Player settings

I would like to have the front row dvd player use the settings from my Apple DVD Player but it seems the current version of front row does not use those settings. On my TV, a 1080p sony display, the image quality is highly depended on these settings.
On previous versions of Front Row, this was not the case. There is no Apple documentation that I was able to find outlining why this limitation is in place nor any workarounds. I was also not able to find a way to downgrade to the previous version to restore functionality either.

You can't view cover art with the DVD Player. You never specified that you're using Video_TS folders, how could we have anticipated that? Maybe you should have provided that information up front. You will need a mouse. If you don't have a mouse and a keyboard and Front Row is not the solution for you, maybe the Mac mini is not the right option for your media needs? Perhaps you could turn on sharing via VNC and remote control your Mac mini from one of your other "many" Macs? There probably are solutions/options available to you, but if we don't understand the original situation, we're not going to be able to provide you with solutions.

  • Using FiOS Mobile with a Bluetooth Keyboard

My husband, who is blind, just tried using the new FiOS Mobile iPad app with a Bluetooth keyboard, and for the most part, it works well enough. However, several small but annoying problems exist for which neither of us have found a solution.  They are:
    1. No keys on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard do anything except the arrows. But sometimes it is impossible to navigate away from some of the buttons on the top end of the virtual remote down to the lower ones, especially the numbers buttons and the DVR control buttons.
    2. Since no other keys on the keyboard perform any function that we can figure out, it makes it difficult to use the Bluetooth keyboard for entering channel numbers without reaching over to the iPad first, causing the app to focus on the bottom half of the virtual remote, then using the Bluetooth keyboard's arrows to find, then press, each digit. This must be done fairly quickly. Why not just fix it so that the keys on the Bluetooth keyboard's numbers row do this job, and other keys, or combinations thereof, move focus to other virtual remote buttons? What's the point of having the Bluetooth keyboard and not being able to control the app remotely? My husband uses the app to control the set-top box, right? Either we're doing something very wrong, or it's a little on the half-baked side.
    3. And last but not least, we've tried selecting shows stored on the DVR via the app with the Bluetooth keyboard, and once again, either we're doing something wrong (probably), or ... you fill in the blank.
The app does most things very well. A little more thought might have gone into labeling some of the buttons, and an explanation that some of them, like the Keyboard button, are toggles, but that's minor compared with the three aforementioned points. Hopefully these can be addressed, and FiOS, if you're really listening, my husband is ready, double-plus-willing and able to help you beta-test anything with which you can come up to make this app better.
    Thanks in advance.

The number keys work fine on my Android BT keyboard, after I tap the keyboard item on the virtual remote.  I am also able to enter numbers when selecting a channel in the guide area.

  • Front Row won't work in my user account

So I have followed the threads about non-working Front Row. Mine worked at 1st instal, but when I loaded a a bunch of MP3s into iTunes and then went to Front Row it spat the dummy.
I did as one poster suggested, made another user account; logged in, and Front Row worked immediately. Going back to me as the user, it wouldn't work.
As I understand it, this behaviour points to a preference file problem (?). If so, how does one correct the file problems (editing, delete etc).
I did an archive and instal - same problem
I did an erase and instal - same problem
I trashed the 1.3 update and attempted to re-instal it thru Software Update - but it didn't show as available, altho other software appeared.
From all this, can anyone give me some advice on what I do now? Many thanks for an information.

    An update for anyone viewing.
I used the Apple-Esc combination from the keyboard and Front Row worked! But only once.
I came across a topic that suggested "pairing" the remote to my computer by aiming the remote at the Apple logo on my machine, 3-4" away, and pressing the Menu and Fast Forward buttons simultaneously. And that worked! And its continuing to work!
Now, after I'm finished my session and I get back on my machine again - the trick is for Front Row to continue working.
Hope these hints help anyone who might have my problem.

  • Front row on Mac pro?

I'm just not sure if front row is available on Mac Pros or if there is any ways to have it on a Mac Pro?
Can I have Front row on a Mac Pro with Apple Remote?

I'd recommend trying remote buddy and Wii remote. It works beautifully! The Wii remote is cheaper than an Apple remote and uses bluetooth so you don't need an IR sensor, which also means you get a lot better range and line of sight isn't neceessary. Of course it means you don't have to mess around with getting Front Row to open either. Once you have remote buddy and a bluetooth remote working, Front Row works perfectly. You can also control any other app with remote buddy.

  • ITunes Crashes When Launched by Front Row

    Hey everyone,
If iTunes isn't running when I launch Front Row, I have some issues when I try to play its music through the Front Row interface. I can select "Music" just fine from the four-icon menu, but as soon as I try "Playlists" or "Artists" or anything, I just get the pinwheel to eternity. If I use the Force Quit keyboard shortcut, i'm immediately spat back to my desktop, where I'm informed that iTunes has unexpectedly quit. If I choose Reopen, though, it will keep quitting until I choose Cancel. Only when I open iTunes myself does the crash loop stop.
Help me! It's really, really annoying to have to make sure that iTunes is running every time I want to use Front Row. And it also sort of defeats the purpose of Front Row in the first place.
    Thanks,
    Jake

Just so you guys know - I just fixed the issue by clearing out the Scripts and Plugins folders in Macintosh HD/Users/myname/Library/iTunes.
I guess I'll add them back in one by one to see which caused the issue. I can't remember which scripts I had - I know there was iTunes-BPM and Art to iChat. Anyone have those? For visualizers I had Gaslight and iConcertCal.
If you had one of these, let's figure it out so we can let the developer know about this bug.

  • Front Row kills my KVM keyboard?

This is a pretty specific issue, but I have been finding that after going into Front Row, my USB keyboard, attached to a two-port KVM switch, is no longer responsive. I have to unplug the KVM from my PC and then from my MacMini, plug them back in and I'm good to go.
Probably the KVM switch's problem, not Front Row's, but I can replicate the issue readily and was wondering where I can start troubleshooting.
    Thanks,
    JJJ

Are you using the Apple remote to control Front Row? What happens if you try to use the keyboard to launch and control Front Row the whole time? Maybe you can discover at exactly which point the keyboard stops working? You can type Apple-esc to open Front Row from the keyboard. Then use the arrow keys and the "return" key to select. The "esc" key works like the "menu" button.

  • Front Row crashes when loading DVD

Hey, I hope someone can help with this, I am trying to use front row to play a DVD, but after a short while front row closes. Now, as soon as i tell it to play the DVD, when it tries to load it, it just turns off. There is no unexpected closure error message or option to report or anything, it just acts like I closed it. And help or info is appreciated, thanks.

I've actually been having the same problem.
First of all, my DVD player constantly takes forever to load a DVD and/or spits it out; then more recently, Front Row without fail will crash when a DVD ends. Even worse, lately, it won't even play the DVD after repeated attempts to start it.
It's extremely annoying and I can't figure out what to do.

  • What are the keyboard commands to control Front Row

I'm new to Front Row and running it on a 17" G4 PC. Since it isn't remote-control compatible how can I navigate and operate Front Row with just the keyboard. I need to know what key strokes to use to do stuff.

Command+esc key turns ON Front Row
The up and down arrow keys let you choose the selection
The Enter key allows you to enter that selection.
Volume when playing music is the up or down arrow keys.
Command+esc key will back you out of any window and all the way back to the computer if you keep hitting those keys.

  • Front Row and bluetooth headset

    Hi
I'm using a bluetooth headset (no mic) and each time I enable it I don't have sound at all in front row. It works fine when I use this headset and run quicktime or itunes fron desktop but as soon as i switch to front row it stop working. Sometimes I may hear 1 or 2 sound effect when I scroll in the fron row menu but as soon as I try to play a movie or a music, I don't hear anything.
Is there any tips to know to make them work together ?
    Tks,
    Xavier

I have the exact same issue. I've filed a bug with apple, but no response. This is with the latest version of Leopard, on a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini

  • Keyboard disabled with Front Row

Since I upgraded to Leopard, the keyboard no longer works when Front Row is open. The only thing I can do with the keyboard is Opt-Cmd-Esc, forcing Front Row to quit. Remote works fine, but keyboard arrows, Cmd-Esc to close, etc. do nothing on the keyboard.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem with my MacPro. It only affects one user. Try adding another user and see if that user sees the same issue. I have not been able to find what it is that is causing the issue with the one user. I have removed preference related to both front row and keyboard without any luck.
Front row was not availabile for the Macpro before Leopard.

  • Front row "movies" crashing

The "Movies" selection of my front row program crashes after about 2 seconds of starting font row. The DVD, Music, and Photo sections work fine. I have repaired permissions, re-installed Front row from the install disk, and updated all quick time, i-tunes, and front row software. This is really puzzling me. My 20 In. I-mac is brand new and worked loke a charm for a week. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My content barrier filtering software was preventing front row from accessing movies.

  • Front Row - Did the 10.6.3 update break keyboard control?!

So, I came across an odd problem today when helping a friend get her data moved from an old iBook G4 onto a new MacBook Pro 2.66GHz. I walked her through setting up the Migration Assistant while on the phone and drove over to help her install some new software. When I got there, she said she was exploring some of the new apps and Front Row looked like it had frozen on her. It wouldn't respond to the arrow keys, Return, or even Command-Escape. Force-quitting via Command-Opt-Esc worked though. I opened Front Row again, and the same thing happened. For kicks, I grabbed my Apple Remote from my backpack and tried it... it seemed to have control just fine, but the keyboard still didn't. Baffled, I told her I'd look into it more later.
When I got home, I tried it on my MBP 2.53GHz and... low and behold... keyboard control wouldn't work on my machine either! I find this very strange because less than a month ago under 10.6.2 (I held out on 10.6.3 for quite a while... was just lazy, I admit) I KNOW I had full control without needing any Apple Remote to do it! I used it for photo slideshows, movies, and quicktime trailers with NO PROBLEM at all. Now, suddenly, under 10.6.3, I can't use Front Row without an Apple Remote?! What gives??
Am I being stupid or blind to some simple setting somewhere, or did Front Row seriously take a change for the worse and disable keyboard control?? If anyone else can chime in here, it would be most appreciated, particularly if you know of a way to help me regain control like I had before without needing an Apple Remote. (For a computer that sits less than two feet away from me, this is a real annoyance!) Thanks for the help!

I have tried that now, but still the same and now my wi-fi printer has stopped working - it is in the print and scan folder and showing as idle but when I send something to print it appears in the folder but does not print. This too was working fine before the update.
I am afraid as a newbie Mac person all this is just far too much for me. After spending £1500 on a machine only 4 days ago, over £50 on books from Amazon to make sure I learn about the Snow Leopard OS X platform, I do not expect to have these issues from just a simple update. When I wanted to turn back the system to 10.6.2 Apple Care told me I have to re-load the iMac operating system to put it back into its original state - on a pc you would just have to do system restore and the whole thing would have been corrected in 5 minutes whilst I waited for all the apparent issues to be resolved relating to the current update.
I have packed it and today it is going back to the shop - sorry I really tried but this experience is just too much for me - but thanks for all your help.

  • Front row crashes on particular Video_TS file stored on other Mac

Hello, I have an iMac with some soft copies of movies I own. I use the iMac to serve up Video_TS folders to several other Macs in my home. I notice that on all of the Macs (including the iMac hosting the shared folders,) if front row ever crashes when reading the file or anything interrupts the initial read causing it to exit early, that folder will never be readable my that Mac again. No matter what I do there seems to be some kind of cached file that makes front row crash when I try to read that same file again.
I can login as a different user on the same Mac and it will work. Is there a user specific cache for front row that can be cleared? Thanks for any advice, pointers or assistance. Joel

Can you play the same video_ts folders using the regular DVD Player application? Or do you get (maybe) a more detailed error?
