Bonjour saves the day

Please consider this an experience worth relating.
First the hardware:
Dell Inspiron  N5110, 6 Gig memory
HP laserjet 1300 printer circa 2003
First generation Airport extreme
Intel core i5
Next the software:
Microsoft Windows 7, -64 bit
Airport 5.7
History:
For the past 7 years I have had a home network consisting of an AirPort router, 2 PC  and a MAC all of which worked great! Both the PCs (Windows XP) and a MAC OS X could get to the Internet and print wirelessly. On July 18, 2011 I received a new PC (described above) and the fun started.
Problem:
Several hardware defects came with the PC from Dell. Several were fixed while others were not or returned. The greatest problem was that the laserjet 1300 printer could not be installed to operate through the wireless system. Windows 7 will autoconfigure it as a wired printer to the PC but not wirelessly to the network.
Hopeless attempts at solutions:
Every day from July 18 until August 19, 2011 I spent hours on the standard fixes. HP had a dedicated laserjet 1300 driver which I tried to assign to many different ports to no avail. July 11 they introduced a Windows 7 64 bit Universal print driver which I could not install properly. I even paid 2 local companies to give it a try for $160 without luck. Dell put me on a software contractor who charged me $240.00 with the guarantee they would fix it. For several hours I watched them try to remotely configure the PC to no avail. They did the same things I was doing with far too many wasted steps. They got tired of listening to me tell them what I had already done and what they were not doing properly so they hung up but kept working remotely. As one can imagine, I have had numerous phone conversations with Dell, Microsoft and HP  technicians. Dell and Microsoft wanted to charge $$$ to work on a 3 rd party printer.  HP would not speak with me because, they "do not support old (7 years) printers".  On August 19 I was about  to purchase a new printer when I had a rare flash of imagination . I had had word-of-mouth communication about Apple's "Bonjour for Windows".
So, here is what happened to remedy the situation:
I went to Apple.com and searched for Bonjour for Windows. The downloaded package installs the Bonjour Printer Wizard in "\Program Files\Bonjour Print Services" and creates a shortcut on the Desktop. The program looks for your printer, identifies it and then asks you to press the "Finish" button. Once you do so, the window disappears and you feel as if you have accomplished nothing. As far as I can tell, I could not find any documentation to help me get my HP printer discovered on the wireless network.  I tried 10 times and then went back to Window's " Devices and Printers" site. I found a new standard TPC/IP port for the correct printer and ten copies of  the correct driver . After I reduced the number of copies to one, I tried to print from the Laserjet 1300 with success.
If you are having the same problems that I have had for a solid month go to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999, download the software and have at it.

Bonjour did not solve my problem but led me to the solution!
After following several links from Bonjour, I was instructed to check my "server".  Now there are several/many "servers" so by elimination, I got down to the Airport "server" which in my case is an eMac connected to a DSL via a Linksys Router.  I first rebooted my "Print Server", no change: then my "Airport (eMac) Server", no change; then my Linksys Router ("Wireless Server") !!!!!  Viola,  Soooooo those of you who are having trouble getting your Mac to print, follow every highway ... until you find your (solution)

    i had to post this. Somehow all my contacts lost their phone numbers. Of course this was all synced out to MobileMe and my iTouch. No numbers anywhere. These are numbers i have had for 20 years. Not recoverable. Not sure what did it but I thought I would see if Time Machine works specifically with Addrress Book.
    I open address book and open Time Machine. There are al the address book back ups. I scroll back to one that has phone numbers ad hit restore all. Several seconds latr all mu numbers are back. In several more seconds the numbers are back one my iTouch.
    That is a tribute to Time Machine if I ever saw one.

    My digital audio workstation works on the same principle; it creates a backup save just in case things go wrong (which--knock on wood--hasn't happened to me) and only references audio/MIDI files that are related to the project.
    My advice is to always, always back up sensitive documents. There are lots of ways of doing this, from manually to automatically. (e.g., A lot of higher-end routers let you connect external storage via USB so you can run backup software that detects any changes to a monitored folder over a network and then backs up any changed/updated documents to the connected storage. I prefer to do it myself manually, though.)

  • MS Word Save As PDF - large files error saves the day, but I can't duplicate it

    I saved a large MS Word 2007 file as a PDF and a message came up saying that this would take a long time and that it would be faster if I saved the file without all of the accessibility features. The message asked if I wanted to do this, I said yes and the resulting file was perfect! Yes, PERFECT! All of the fonts were fine, the table of contents worked (you could click on the headings and be taken to the right section) and the file size was 5 times smaller than the original word file.
    This happened twice in a row. Then, on my last MS Word document, it did not and the resulting PDF file was 10 times larger than the MS Word file. I tried to turn the accessibility option off, but this didn't help. I turned the bit-mapped fonts off, which helped in file size, but ruined the look of the document. I tried printing to a PDF, which helped on file size, but the table of contents didn't work.
    How can I get this message to reappear or what settings can I change to get this to work (i.e. to get a 3 MB MS Word file saved as a 1 MB PDF file with the right fonts and a working table of contents)? I know Adobe Reader can do it.

    I have Adobe Acrobat 8.0 and Reader 8.0. In MS Word 2007, if I click Save As, I can select the file type as PDF. I do not know which program is allowing this (Word, Acrobat or Reader). When I select PDF, my Save As window changes slightly, giving me options, such as saving in Standard or Minimum size formatting (and no, minimum size formatting doesn't perform the way I need it to). I can also click on an Options button, which is where I can choose to remove the accessibility options as I mentioned previously.
    So, sorry, I didn't know that Reader was not the program performing this. It must be Acrobat.
    I'll rephrase my statement: I know a program that I'm using at the time I save a Word 2007 file as a PDF has the capability to save a PDF exactly as I need it.

  • Nokia saves the day in mediating between PC and MA...

    Nokia's helpful advice on its homepage about Nokia to Macintosh data transfer (in my case E61i and MAC Powerbook 17" OX10.5.8) saved my day. On the other hand, the E61i could always be synchronised with the PC (Hp Pentium 4, Win XP).
    I could not get Microsoft's advice for transferring calendar/address files from the PC to the MAC to work (.vcs files), despite elaborate workarounds suggested on the Microsoft help page. Since Nokia's obliging message explained how to co-ordinate data on the Nokia with the MAC using bluetooth, I was able to use the Nokia as an intermediary. PC-Nokia - Nokia-MAC It worked. 
    Look on Nokia's homepage for the notice in question if you have a pc, Mac and Nokia and are frustrated about comunication.  

    If your problem is PC to MAC, as mine was, and the Nokia-as-mediator idea isn't relevant, you might try putting Eudora or Thunderbird (both free of charge) on both machines transferring your PC address into the PC Eudora or Thunderbird, then transfar the Eu or Th  file to the Eu or Thu in the recipient machine.
    Even before that, you might have better luck than I did with Outlook (or Outlook Express): if you succeed from Outlook (Express) in getting a vcs file with File > Import or Export > values separated by commas, then you would get your addresses, calendar, etc. to your MAC. 
    If the problem is with importing addresses, etc., into the N97, you might find something like a Portable Thunderbird, Euodora (Outlook equivalents) or whatever that your Nokia could accomodate more easily than the corresponding Mac or PC programs (unless the N97 is condemned not to accepting any 3rd-party programs).
    Otherwise, "bon courage" - Nokia got around to fixing the firmware on my E61i just before I prepared to jump out the window so they'll have to do the same on the N97 sooner or later.

    My sister lost her black iphone 4s Verizon and we're sure it's been restored by whoever found the iphone. Is there any way we can still track after restore? What if we wait it out and hope this person turns on location services and/or uses the SIM card?

  • Creative Saves The Day

    My last 2 computers, (amd and intel), have both given me sound problems. Problems that I attributed to my Logitech 560's finally going bad. One speaker with lousy sound, rear speakers working off and on, mostly off... and other assorted problems.
    So, enough was enough and I disabled the Realtek on-board sound in the bios and installed a SB Audigy SE... (Yes, I know it's an el cheapo). I had purchased it months ago for another system and never used it. My audio hasn't sounded this good in a couple of years! My 560's work flawlessly!
    I wish I'd gone for the sound card to begin with, but.... I was trying to get by cheap. Those of you still using on-board sound might want to re-evaluate your sound package.
    Now I will order one of the good Creative cards!

    Yes, I agree, there are some issues with x-fi. I've narrowed the search to the X-Fi Platinum Fatalty Champion Series. Reviews that I've read have been mostly very positi've.
    Anyone got any knocks on the Platinum version?

  • Proto failed and Creative Cloud didn't save the file

    After spending about 4 hours in Proto on a project that I started a few days ago, Proto suddenly quit.  Upon reopening Proto, I discovered that even though I had been VERY careful to make sure my file was backed up to Creative Cloud, Proto had reverted to a version of my file from the first day I started working on this project (so about 13 hours of time was lost).  I thought Creative Cloud was going to save the day because I had, after all, backed up my file there many, many, many times.  Turns out Creative Cloud will only show me my Index page (and not the most recent version of it), but it shows it to me on 6 pages - same image of the Index page on all 6 pages.
    Is there a way to revert to a previous version of my file that was sync'd prior to Proto crashing?

    There is no way to revert to a previous version. When Proto syncs it posts the file to the Creative Cloud overwriting the previous file if it exists, like saving and edit to the same file name when using a desktop product.
    You can duplicate a project in Proto, so this might offer one potential way to backup your work.

    I have tried to figure out how to set my history to only save 2 days. I am sure that in previous version of firefox that this option was available where as in this one I don't see that. So I am either blind that I can't find it in the history option or it doesn't exist. It seems the options are remember history no limit or always to remove when closed.     No need to crop your clips. The mask does the cropping of the upper clip.
    To use the image mask, you need an image to place into the drop zone in the inspector. In your case you'd want a simple black to white gradient as the image mask and choose Luminance in the Image Mask source luminance pop-up. I'm attaching a sample gradient. The original was 1280x720 to match a 720p movie but the forum shrinks it down. This gradient was created in Photoshop in less than 30 seconds.
    You import this gradient file into your event. Click on the Mask Source in the Image Mask effect and then click on the gradient file in your event list and click Apply Clip. Change the Mask Source to Luminance. Change the offset mask parameters to move where the gradient lines up in your movie.

    As it was pointed out making prior arrangements could of helped extend the time you need to get your account back in order..
    But if you have to have the phone and its the only thing you have to make calls, I would try other means ( Family, Friends, or other )  to get the rest of the balance payed and you can pay at a Corporate store using the stores Kiosk machine.!   You can pay with Cash, Credit or I think with a  check  but using a check I'd ask the Local store how the policy is on that..

    System Preferences -> Screen Saver -> Apple -> Word of the day
    where I could choose from different dictionaries. I'm looking for basic Spanish, but it's not there. There must be a way to set it up that way. Any suggestion, please?

    AFAIK, it selects dictionaries properly installed in /Library/Dictionaries/. So, you most likely have to install a Spanish one into there.

    I have been using the "word of the day" screen saver that comes stock with Yosemite (10.10.2). When active, it will scroll words across stopping randomly on words and then provide the definition. Ok, so far. But it will also display a message with the definition to the effect of, "Press D key to see more". What is the intended result of this? When I press "D" it simply wakes up and returns to the Desktop.

    Word of the Day has a button to select the dictionary to be used - the New Oxford American Dictionary and a Japanese dictionary were available options as well as "Automatic".
