Bookmarks bar is blank until I customize or show/hide another toolbar

Using Firefox 12 on our Windows 2008 Terminal Server (32 bit) its bookmarks bar is blank after each Firefox start. When I open the customize dialog in Firefox and close it (even without changes) or when I e. g. hide or show an other toolbar the bookmarks are shown as expected.
I tried a clean install of Firefox (no addons, no customizations, new user profile) but that did not change the behaviour of Firefox. The bookmarks are not shown in the bookmarks bar after Firefox is (re-) started. Any of the suggestions I found so far (deactivating/updating All-In-One-Sidebar, using safe mode) did not work.
Firefox 10 behaves as expected, using a new user profile or the one which had been used with Firefox 12 before. I have a Firefox 12 installation on local machines (Windows XP and Windows 7, 32 bit and 64 bit) which also works correctly.

Well, the background first.
We use Firefox as our default browser, having some policies in a "global" config file in the program folder as well as some "global" extensions centralized in a special folder. There are two main reasons for that:
* All users should have a default installation whereever they log on without worrying about configuration and extension installing even if they log on fort the first time.
* Firefox itself, the configuration including default profile and the extensions are centrally distributed independent from each other. Thus we can update the extensions or change configuration without touching the user profiles etc. using a software distribution system.
The default installation includes proxy configruation, default settings for extensions, home page, cache etc. Some configuration shall not be changed by the user, others may be changed temporarilly, others depend on the type of machine the user is using. The same way we use Firefox on our Terminal Server which is used by our colleages that are out on business.
However, on our TS there is a link to Firefox in the "all users" desktop folder so that everyone has the link on his or her desktop. And I have to mention that it is a german Windows 2008 TS. This is important to know, because the link points to "c:\programme\firefox\firefox.exe". Using this link I get the phenomenon described earlier. What I worked out by chance was that if I start Firefox using a link pointing to "c:\program files\firefox\firefox.exe" everything works fine, no problem at all.
This is repeatable and double checked by a colleague :-) and the solution is to change the link although I don not know the reason why this happens (it did not happen with Firefox 3.6.x which we used before on the TS).

  • Bookmarks bar, after turning on, still dosen't show bookmarks?

I turn on the bookmarks bar but the bookmarks don't show. There are bookmarks in the bar file but they don't show. Tried even saving new bookmarks to toolbar and that doesn't work either help please i love this feature.

Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" then click the "Restore Default Set" button

  • Safari 4 UI is way too dark, can't read bookmarks bar :(

    Hi guys,
I have an issue with Safari UI. It's just way, way too dark for me. Bookmarks bar is especially hard for me to read. Why is Apple using a dark gray background and black text? It's incredibly hard to read. I don't have vision issues (I have 20/20 vision) and yet I find it straining to even look at the bar for long periods of time. And why don't they allow "favicons" to show up on the bookmarks bar? I think allowing favicons to show would improve usability too.
    What can I do?

Unfortunately, you'll just have to live with it; Apple has made their design decisions for the UI so they are consistent across all (or most) of their applications. If you have a PowerPC Mac, you may want to try Unify to lighten the UI of Safari and other applications. It may not work with Safari 4, and whatever you do, make a complete bootable backup of your hard drive before you install it, and Repair Disk Permissions after that, then restart Safari to see if it works.
Favicons are not cached due to the fact that they occupy a lot of space, and that will slow down Safari, so there is no provision for allowing that at the present time.

  • The icons in the bookmark tool bar are blank and the text that use to be below the icon is gone. I now have to cursor over the blank icons to see the text and the one I want. Can the icon/text customization be returned?

In the Navigation Toolbar, the icons "Back", "Forward" etc. show the small icon and the descriptive text below the Icon. My Bookmark Toolbar use to have the same icon/text format but at some point, possibly a browser update, that changed. Currently, I do have a visible Bookmark Toolbar BUT the icons do not show the website icon, as previously, and the text below each icon is gone. I an cursor over each icon and the text becomes visible next to the icon. This is a bit of a pain to find a bookmark. Can I do a customization to return to the icon/text format.
Was this changed because browser users requested this option, or was it an internal decision.? If the later why make such changes when not requested?
    Ed Sander

That wasn't a change in Firefox. It sounds like something is broken in your Firefox installation, or you are misunderstanding the different between the Bookmarks Toolbar and the other Toolbars.
In the Bookmarks Toolbar the text appears next to the website icon, not below the icon as with the other two Toolbars, and it's not switchable between text and no text as with the other Toolbars. With both the bookmark icon and the Bookmark name missing, something is broken in your installation. You need to do a little troubleshooting.
Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode] <br />
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
If not, see this: <br />
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes]
If your problem isn't related to an extension, your bookmarks data base file (places.sqlite) is probably corrupt. <br />
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite <br />
Be aware that if you delete the "places.sqlite" and similar files, your bookmark website icons won't automatically appear (the JSON backups don't have that icon data) when you restart Firefox and the places.sqlite is rebuilt using the backup data file, but the icons should be saved the first time each bookmark is used for the first time.

  • How do I drag a link to the bookmarks bar?

This started with a simple attempt to install an app that will let me see page source at sites I'm looking at (I'm doing web development and learning to customize for iphone). When I went to a site to get me started, it said all I had to do was drag thhis link ("this link" was hyperlinked text) to the bookmarks bar. I tried touching the link and dragging it to bookmarks bar but that just moved the whole page. I tried holding my finger on the link until it showed a gray background and dragging to the book marks bar. Same problem. I googled dragging links and found some sites that talked about using a + symbol in the bookmarks bar. I don't see one. I have an iPhone 3GS, and the bookmarks bar has a left arrow, right arrow, box with an arrow pointing out of it, open book symbol and double page symbol. So I looked for another way to add this ability to view source, and found a page where I guy had developed a little JavaScript that needed to be added to my iPhone. He suggested I email it to my iPhone, then copy and paste it to a specific location. So I googled how to copy and paste on an iPhone. Guess what? Found another page where I was instructed to drag "this link" to the bookmarks bar to give me the ability to cut and paste. I tried all kinds of finger tricks in the email, trying to copy the JavaSCript and finally gave up in complete aggravation. These should be baby steps and I can't make any of them work.
On top of everything else, I can't even get iSafari to have a simple home page. What's up with that /#X%&*\# ?
Very, very frustrated.  On a desktop PC I'm very good with all kinds of software and system tools and tweaks. On my groovy new iPhone, I feel like a dope. What happened to the intuitive interface of Apple products?  Help?

Yes, I'm familiar with the old RTFM rule, but I tried four different times to retrieve that manual form the Apple site. Each time got an error message that something was wrong, that they were working on it, and to please come back later. On the fifth try last night, I got through and successfully downloaded the user guide.  Woo hoo!

  • I want to make the adress bar smaller so that my bookmark bar can show more than three icons when placed on the same row.

I want to have about five to ten bookmark icons in the same row as the search and address bar. So i use Customize... and I put the bookmark bar on the same line. I leave the "Name"-textbox in every bookmark blank so that only the icons appear.
However, only two icons appear and the rest are displayed in a drop down menu from an arrow you click.
I don't need the address bar to take 70% of the screen. I don't want the bookmark bar to use an extra row. I just want to have five to ten bookmark icons next to my address and search bar. Is this possible?

  • How do I replace bookmark bar that was lost when a new Mozilla Fox Start page suddenly appeared with a Zone Alarm Community Toolbar, and nothing I have so far tried, working with "Show all Bookmarks", works ("Unable to process the backup file).

My current version is 6.0.2. A box appeared a few days ago informing me of an update to 7 (x?). I declined for the time being.
Then a Start Page just showed up missing the bookmark tool bar. I tried to import a bar from another browser. Nothing showed up. Then, I went to "Help". First, I clicked on "About Firefox" where I was informed of an update. This time, I tried it. When I clicked on "Apply Update", I received a message; 'Update could not be installed" despite there being no other Firefox browsers running.
I went back to "Help" and clicked on "Firefox Help". A page came up with the URL in place, but the page would not load ("Cannot find server at support.mozilla.com"). After several clicks on "Try Again" with the same result, I copied the URL and pasted it into a different browser, from which I am now working.
Before sending this question, I tried the two procedures ("Manual Backup" and "Restoring From Backup") found on Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks/Import And Backup/Restore, using both "stored backups" from Mozilla's Profile folder and "Choose a file", as well as Bookmarks/Show ... /Backup. In each case, the response was, "Unable to process the backup file".
I had previously tried another method I found on Google which involved copying and saving a Mozilla backup file (this is the file I used in the procedure above - "Choose a File") found in the C:/Documents And Settings/.../Profile Folder, then renaming the original file "backup.HTML" and saving it in a folder one level up from its original location. The Bookmark bar was to show up after shutting down and reopening Mozilla - it never happened. I replaced the original backup file.
It occurred to me to locate the Bookmark File for this browser (Chrome) and using it in the "Choose a File" method, referred to above. But there is no extension included in the file name, and I was afraid to try it.
I'm out of ideas. Is there something else to try?

Check that the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible and that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" (Linux, Windows)
    * Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button

  • In Firefox4, can I lose the folder icons from the Bookmarks Bar while keeping icons everywhere else (because the folder icons are superfluous and extend the horizontal list of bookmark folders beyond the width of the window)?

I've just installed Firefox4 for Mac (OS 10.6.7) and can no longer see all my bookmark folders at once across the top -- because the folder icons make the Bookmarks Bar too wide. Yet, I like the icons on the other bars, so I don't want to turn them off globally. Is there a way to just lose the folder icons -- which don't appear to serve a purpose anyway?

Small correction to original post. Machine is an iMac 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. (I was at home when I made the first post.) But the bookmarks menu behavior still exists today and FF 5 is essentially unusable.
System details next to the post are not for machine with the bug in question.
Found a copy of FF4 to use until a solution is found. Turned off automatic updates to preserve this version.

  • When I open firefox the address bar remains blank after a website is loaded from favorites.

I open Firefox and the open window is blank (as it should be, because I have set my Preferences to open firefox with a blank window.
Then I select a Bookmarked website from my Bookmarks Toolbar, which opens then opens that website in the window fine.
BUT, the Address Bar remain blank. It does not display the URL of the web page that has been opened from the Bookmark. Why not? Firefox always did this in the past, but this problem has existed since the last few updates, and still does now on the latest v22.0 for MAC.
If I open another blank TAB, then switch back to the first tab, the URL of the first tab does appear. But what a pain. I shouldn't have to open another tab, then switch back to the first tab, just for the URL to appear in the address bar.
I can't believe this problem has existed for so long now over at least 2 or more version upgrades.
    Please fix.

I was not able to reproduce your problem using Firefox 22.0 for OS X (running OS X 10.8).
There might be an extension at fault here. You can try and launch Firefox in Safe mode to try and eliminate possible causes.

  • How can I make my Bookmarks bar show up like in Safari?

I want to have a bookmarks bar immediately underneath the URL bar, extending the length of the window, so I can have my bookmark folders in view at all times.
Also I don't understand the "Automatically add" button on this screen. It looked like something you were recommending, but then it said "Author not verified." If the author is not verified, why would you recommend it?

  • Bookmarks in bookmarks bar cannot be edited or deleted permanently?

All my bookmarks in the bookmarks bar. I want to move them all so they are just in bookmarks menu dont want anything in bookmarks bar. I have edited renamed moved the bookmarks from bookmarks bar without a problem until I quite safari. Once I reopen safari all changes I made disappear and it reverts back to original with all bookmarks on bookmarks bar.
So frustrated, what am I doing wrong that i cannot make permanent changes to my bookmark bar on Safari 5.1.3?

    Hi Remy,
Might be corrupted Safari preferences (.plist)
    Quit Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If that didn't help, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Move the Cace.db file to the Trash.
Tip ...  disabling the Lion "resume" feature can prevent Safari from "caching" web content which seems to be causing Lion users problems.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps

  • When I change the position of the bookmarks button it always jumps to the same position (in the bookmarks bar). How can I make it stay where I want it to?

When I try to change to position of the symbol for the bookmarks it doesn't matter where I put it, always when I click on "Finish" the button jumps back in the middle of the bookmarks bar, right of the bookmarks and left of two addons (FoxyTunes and Forecastfox).

Sorry, that specific Bookmarks button ''(with the drop-marker down arrow or '''bookmarks''' word)'' is tied to the Bookmarks Toolbar when it is shown, and only appears when the Menu bar is hidden and the Firefox button is showing. It is not a "regular" toolbar button.
There is the original Bookmarks button, in the Customize Palette, which toggles the Bookmarks Sidebar view. It will stay where you put it on the Toolbars.

  • What is the "Bookmarks Bar" and how do I use it?

I've been all over my iPad user guide and can find zero information about the "bookmarks bar" except how to make it appear and disappear.  I am now able to make a blank area near the top of the Safari screen appear and disappear - GREAT!!!!  Information as to what this area may contain, how to place and remove items from it, etc is NOWHERE!  If there is anyone out there that uses this feature, please explain what it is and if you find it useful.
In windows internet explorer, there is a "favorites bar" near the top of the screen where I can place the icons for my most used favorites.  Instead of opening a favorites menu and scrolling through it to find what I want, I just click the icon that is always present at the top of the internet explorer page - really useful.  I imagine that "bookmarks bar" is a similar feature in Safari but it's completely ignored in the iPad user guide.
Thanks for any help you can give.
              - Jim

    Thanks Skydiver,
This was easy and does exactly what I thought it would do!  What threw me off was the menu that pops up when you go to save a page as a bookmark.  The menu lists 6 choices:  Add bookmark; Add to reading list; Add to home screen; mail link to this page; Tweet; and Print.  Notice there is no choice to "add to bookmarks bar".   You have to select "add bookmark" and then within the next process box you have the option to specify an alternative to bookmark.  When you look for the alternatives, "bookmarks bar" shows up.  Not exactly obvious, is it?
It's almost like they don't don't want you to use it.  This is absolutely OBTUSE!
    Thanks again, Skydivier!
