Bought new computer, transferred iTunes but lost all playlists

I recently "upgraded" from an HP desktop with Windows XP to a Dell Studio XPS with Windows vista. I saved iTunes to an external hard drive from my old computer and then tried to transfer to my new computer. Ended up having to re-download iTunes and then it found all of my transferred music files, but I lost all of the playlists that I worked so hard to build. They are still on the old computer. Is there a way to transfer them? If I sync my iPod with the old computer, will it restore the playlists or delete them from the old iTunes? Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you copy all your data from the old computer to the new computer?
For iTunes, copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ folder on new computer.
That is all you need to do (for iTunes).

  • Bought new computer- how do i get all my itunes song off old computer and onto new one?

i recently purchased a new computer and installed ITUNES on it.  Once I put in my APPLE ID all my purchased songs showed up (songs i purchased through ITUNES on my old computer).  Here is the problem, my old computer has around 800 songs on it from cd's that I owned and downloaded those songs into ITUNES.  Now i want those songs on my new ITUNES on my new computer but don't know how to get them there.  I have tried the following so far:
    - Tried syncing my ipod and ipad to the new computer but each time I do this the new computer ITUNES wants to wipe out the 800 songs and just put on the transfered purchases songs.
    - Tried 'home sharing'.  When I did home sharing with both computers on and ITUNES opened all the songs showed up on my new computer but as soon as I closed out ITUNES on the old computer the 800 songs went away on the new computer and it went right back to the songs I purchased.
Please someone tell me there is an easy way to take all these songs I have on ITUNES on the old computer and transfer them to my new computer and ITUNES without having to bust out all these old cd's and sit there and re-burn them all on the new computer.
I have in addition to this all ready authorized my new computer with ITUNES so that is good to go.  Any help would be appreciated...

Are they not on your new computer after you restored your iTunes backup?
    Didn't have a backup?
Unlike music you can download apps multiple times. Go to each app, download it (ignore the price) and after you click it will tell you that you've already purchased the app and ask if you want to download it again.

  • TS4062 I purchased a new desktop, downloaded iTunes, & authorized the new computer in iTunes, but, I can't sync with the new computer because I get a message that says "sync will resume when Owner HP is on-line. That was the old computer.

I purchased a new desktop computer, downloaded iTunes, authorized the computer thru iTunes, but, unable to sync with iPad3. I get a message stating "sync will resume when OWNER HP in on-line. That was the old computer, which no longer has iTunes on it. What can I do?

You still have to make the new computer and the iTunes library the new syncing library. Did you transfer all of your content into iTunes yet or copy the iTunes library from the old PC to the new one?
If you no longer have the old computer and did not copy the iTunes library to the new one, read this user tip.

If you did tranfer everything over, you probably have to set up WiFi syncing again in iTunes in order for the iPad WiFi settings to see your new computer.

  • I bought a new computer, transferred music, but purchased music not working

I am going from a computer with 4 accounts, each having it's own iPod application and library to a new computer. I want to (a) eliminate user accounts and have one big iTunes library, and multiple users choose what music they want from that library; and (b) be able to use the purchased music.
I had no problem transfering all the music, however, because I reinstalled iTunes, and I happen to have a new email account, I created a new iTunes account. Even though I followed the directions to "Authorize this computer", the purchased music in my librarly will NOT synch up to my iPod.
Also, I've spent hours trying to figure out how to have four people share the library so I'm not duplicating the iTunes application or all that music, and I cannot figure out a way to do it. Even creating specific playlists doesn't work, it downloads all the music (that I didn't buy) anyway.
    Help!!!

I've had similar issues. I purchased a MacBook, followed the instructions to transfer my library to my new machine using my iPod, and it would not sync 140 songs to the iPod.
Then, I purchased a movie from the iTunes store, it downloaded, won't play on the MacBook, and when I tried to sync it to my video iPod, it said that it couldn't sync it to the iPod because that iPod was not capable of playing videos.
I've restored it twice, reinstalled itunes, reinstalled the library. No change.

  • New computer, reloading itunes, but will i loose everything on ipod?

i just got a new computer and am preparing to download itunes. my most important question is when I do plug in my ipod will I loose all my downloaded apps? and pictures and music?

Yup, sadly, but fret not little lamb there is a solution. Before reloading itunes, connect your ipod and move all the pictures off it but going into my computer and selecting it, put them where you want on your computer, you can move them back later. As for the movies and apps, there is the magical cloud. It is one of the only amazing things about itunes. Once you have downloaded itunes sign in and before syncing, go to the purchased tab and on the bottys previously purchased. When you click on that it opens a new window with every song app, video and the like ever purchased on your account. You can also sign in on other peoples accounts and download their stuff. Unfortunately it only works for purchased items, so anything you want that was put on from a cd, you are out of luck. Hope that solves it for you!!!!!

  • Songs show up on new computer in itunes but when try to play then can't find

All the songs are listed but when I select it says can't find it???   I did a Windows easy transfer to the new computer.

So what sync settings do you currently have enabled from under the iPod's Summary and Music tabs?  Any error messages when you try to sync?
To be sure, reset sync warnings. To do this, right->click the iPod under Devices and choose Reset Warnings. Then resync your iPod.

  • HT1473 How do you copy songs from ipod onto a new computer's itunes store?? Playlists are on old pc??

How do I copy songs from ipod ontoa new computer? Playlists still on old laptop. been trying for hours. Help??????

Ideally you would copy over your library from your old computer or a backup. See this migrate iTunes library post or Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • How can I sync my iPad3 with my new computer's itunes without deleting all my music?

When I try to sync my music from my iTunes to my iPad3, itunes says that it will delete all my music, movies, etc currently on my iPad with what I have on my current iTunes. I have music and movies on here from at least one other computer using the same Apple ID. I was able to just highlight and drag all my music to my iPad (which caused a lot of duplicates), but my itunes really just does not want to cooperate with my iPad. Everything I try to do it just wants to either delete what I already have or not work at all.

You can sync your iOS device with a single iTunes Library. So if you sync your iPad with your present iTunes library all the music and videos would be deleted.
You can always transfer the media from your old iTunes library to the new one if they are on different commuter using a USB drive and then add those media to the new iTunes library and sync your iPad then.

    Thoughts?

    Hi JSheppOCNJ,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Since you have posted in the iCloud for PC forum, my first suggestion would be to make sure you have iCloud setup on all of your devices.
Here is some information to get you started:
Apple - iCloud - Your info up to date on all your devices.
    iCloud Help: What is iCloud?
Apple - iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices.

  • New computer, transfered music via external hard drive, library there but music wont play, message "The song "    " could not be used because the original file could not be found. Tech did everything, said call  Itunes support

    New Computer
transfered Itunes library via clickfree backup. New computer Tech support(Premier PC) did this, Now can not play library within Itunes. Message says "The song " song name " could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same Tech tried different things via on line support could not fix and said call itunes support and say Itunes will not play on new computer.

I was given the option to locate the file where the song is held. If so select "locate" and direct it to the folder / file where the song is and open it. itunes then will give you the option to use this process to update all of your library. OK that as this will do it automatically instead of doing them one by one. I hope this helps.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad:  File>Transfer Purchases

Now remove all your info and update the old AppleiD/iTunes account and use only that account.
You cannot transfer items between iTunes accounts.
You can redownload all the content.

Unfortunely, all movies and songs purchased in iTunes will be lost...you'll have to purchase them again! Any applications you've purchased, you can download again for free.
Music Rescue is a program you can use to transfer any and all data (music, movies, pictures..) from your iPod to your computer, and iTunes.

  • HT4527 I got a new pc, transferred files, and lost about 2/3 of my library. Also all of my playlists. Have a lot on my iPod, but not all of it. Where did it go?

I got a new pc, transferred files, and lost about 2/3 of my library. Also lost all playlists. I have a good amount on my iPod but can't transfer. What happened to my music?

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Authorizing a computer does not cause media to magically appear.
Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.
