BPEL PM in Production

Hi
for anyone who use BPEL PM in Production,i have few queries
1. which is the version used MidTier or Standalone OC4J and if you are using the standalone version how is the performance?
2. how do you handle version upgrades to the BPEL PM when you have running processes?
3. is there any failover such as clustering available?
4.which release (10.1.2 or 10.1.2.0.2) is in use?
thanks
Sam

Hi Sam,
Here are our answers:
1. MidTier ofc. Wouldnt know how to use Standalone in a production environment. Performance really looks good, no complains there.
2. Ahh, that's tricky. It all depends on the changes in the patch. Mostly it's taken care of by the patch, sometimes you have to run scripts to convert structure.
3. Yes, after all, it's just a container. However, we dont use that atm.
4. 10.1.2, waiting with 10.1.2.0.2 until 10.1.3 is available.
Hope this answers your questions?

• Restarting failed BPEL instances in production

1. Assume there are 1000 transactions per hour. If one of the 3rd party services is down (say Oracle Apps) for an hour and 1000 bpel instances have failed, How do we restart the failed 1000 instances at the same time (or in a single click)? We want to avoid the administrator going and starting each BPEL instances separately.
2. If the BPEL flow has 10 activities in the flow and all instances have failed in the 6th activity (calling Oracle Apps Adapter service), when we restart the failed instance, Will it again redo the first 5 activities or will it start exactly from where it failed?
Thanks,
Joe

You said:

It could be that processes are restarted by the BPEL PM by itself. Otherwise the message of the instances are recorded in the dehydration store. You can recover the message from this recover area via the BPEL console. You can selected them all and recover them at once. Or you create a Java program using the BPEL API to perform this. BUT it all depends on your process design! If a process fails, it should go into the exception flow and handled by the exception process, aka error-hosipital. If processes should be re-started you must design it.
2. If the BPEL flow has 10 activities in the flow and all instances have failed in the 6th activity (calling Oracle Apps Adapter service), when we restart the failed instance, Will it again redo the first 5 activities or will it start exactly from where it failed?
It depends in the process-type; synchronous or a-synchronous. A synchronous process will fail and restarteing should be done via the calling process, because the sync process does not dehydrate. An a-sync process will de-hydrate his process state on specific aktivities; receive/invoke/wait, when a process fails it will contuniue from his last process state.

• OSB 11g,BPEL PM 10g -Does these products has in-built Registry & Discovery

I am looking for options to evaluate Registry and Discovery features for Services developed using OSB 11g, BPEL PM 10g Products. Does these products have these features in-built?
From the product documentation, I noted OSR will provide these features and need to integrate it with OSB, BPEL PM. Without having OSR, can Registry and Discovery features available in OSB 11g, BPEL PM 10g

You have to have a registry in place to manage the service endpoints and have BPEL/OSB discovering them at runtime. BPEL/OSB does not have any inbuilt registry support but they can interact with a registry. Oracle Service Bus can interact with any UDDI 3.0 compliant registry including Oracle Service Registry. • Async BPEL Process Invocation...

We have a business process, which when invoked from BPEL console works fine, however, when we invoke it from an web application of ours, it does gets initiated, but fails later.
We have Apache Axis deployed in the same OC4J server as the Oracle BPEL PM(10.1.2.0.2), which exposes few EJBs as SOAP Services.
The Business Process invokes couple of SOAP Services and then creates a Task and then waits for task completion and based on task action invokes two other SOAP services.
When we invoke it from the BPEL Console, everything works fine. It also works fine, if we invoke it first (after startup) from BPEL Console and then through our web application.
However, if we invoke it first through our web application, then it does initiates, but fails at the Task creation. If we try to hit the BPEL Console, we get this error

An unexpected error has occurred while executing your request. This is most likely related to a defect in the Oracle BPEL Process Manager product. We apologize you can post the error to the OTN forum and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi Nilay,
Please follow the following steps.
1. Open a browser window.
2. Open the BPELConsole in this window.
3. click on the Manage BPEL Domain link on right hand top corner.
4. Click on XPath Library link on this page.
or try the following URL
http://localhost:9700/BPELConsole/<domain_name>/domain.jsp?mode=XPath
or
http://localhost:9700/BPELConsole/default/domain.jsp?mode=XPath
There seem to be a typo in the Developer's guide.

The steps I followed for the MLR#3 patch on Windows 32 bit were:
1) Use opatch utility for patch 7586063 - No errors displayed and lsinventory output looks fine
2) Ran the upgrade_10134_10134mlr_olite.sql & upgrade_10134_10134MLR_olite.sql scripts for BPEL and ESB (Oracle Lite used for this development install)
Any ideas how to resolve the BPEL Console error?

After performing an opatch rollback I realised that I should have run the BPEL database upgrade script "upgrade_10134_10134mlr_above_mlr11_olite.sql" rather than the one listed in my previous post above.
So after reapplying the patch and running the correct script all is now working

Any ideea ?

Man Christian!
1000 Thanks for your tip. I run into same issue on W2K3 with 10.1.3.4 MLR#4 (so far last MR allowed for AIA apps).
I had the orabepl.ear file of the size as was mentioned earlier: 2.530.260 in the bpel\system and other one on the j2ee\ocj4_soa\applications folder.
Copying did not help.
I had to perform following steps from the <MLR#4>/custom/scripts/post.bat file which takes the file from the bpel\system,
ADDS some another .jars in it and ONLY THEN move it to the j2ee\...\applications folder:
copy %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\j2ee\orabpel.ear %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\services\lib\orabpel.ear
copy %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\j2ee\ejb\oc4j_ejb_services.jar %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\services\lib\ejb_services.jar
copy %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\j2ee\ejb\ejb_ob_engine_oc4j.jar %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\services\lib\ejb_ob_engine.jar
cd %ORACLE_HOME%\bpel\system\services\lib
%ORACLE_HOME%\jdk\bin\jar -uvf orabpel.ear ejb_services.jar ejb_ob_engine.jar
After doing manually these steps the orabpel.ear in j2ee\...\applications has got the size: 2.798.840 which was bigger as right after patch application.
Then I deleted the orabpel folder from the j2ee\...\aplication-deployments
started the j2ee containe (it was named: oc4_soa ) and the BPEL Console started live well as before in 10.1.3.3
As I did verify from other files The rest of steps from the post.bat file seems did well, only this part was not executed.
With Best Regards,
Alexey

Hi,
I am using the fault policy in the BPEL, I am getting some strange error.
In my BPEL process I am calling the another BPEL process using the Invoke activity. The second BPEL process is throwing the business exception. In my fault policy file, I says if any fault occured to the humanIntervention.
So when the error occurred, the first BPEL process invoke activity is waiting for the human action. The moment I clicked on the activity label in the Activity tab, I am getting this error.
