Bridging through built-in wireless to ethernet DHCP server

I have a 1Gb ethernet LAN with my own DHCP, etc. servers, and an 802.11g WAP bridging to it using WPA2/AES. I've recently added two new Macs: an iMac connected to the ethernet and a MacBook connecting through its built-in wireless. This all works fine.
Since both Macs are 802.11n capable (with the addition of the $2 addon, which I've done), it occurred to me that I should be able to set up the built-in airport in the iMac as an 802.11n WAP that the MacBook could connect to as its preferred wireless network when the iMac's turned on, tripling it's connection speed to my LAN, and falling back to the 802.11g WAP when the iMac's not on.
I was able to do this pretty simply by setting up internet (LAN in my case) sharing on the iMac, and I could indeed get an 802.11n connection to it from the MacBook when the iMac was on, and fairly seamless failover to the 802.11g WAP when the iMac wasn't available.
Clearly, all the pieces are present to make my plan work, but there are two stumbling blocks:
1. I can't find a way to get the iMac to bridge directly to the ethernet, so that the central DHCP servers provide the configuration for the MacBook. I don't see an obvious way to allow DHCP, but not use the server built into the iMac (or configure it to hand out the addresses I want). It looks an awful lot like the iMac is NAT'ing the wireless to the ethernet, which is definitely not what I want.
Is there no way to configure the iMac's wireless as a passthrough (bridge) to the ethernet so it acts as a WAP (even if it only accepts one connection at a time)?
2. I have configured both Macs' wireless to connect to my WAP with WPA2/AES, and they do so just fine. When setting the iMac wireless up for internet sharing, why can't I set the same security options - it only offers me WEP, which I'm not willing to use.
I know the hardware can handle what I want, as can the BSD underpinnings of OS X (all of my LAN's servers run BSD variants), I just don't know how to configure it.

That's exactly what it does. The 'Internet Sharing' option enables NAT.
This may or may not be a problem, though - what is the MacBook missing by getting its configuration from the iMac rather than your regular DHCP server?
(by default, when you turn on internet sharing the OS starts up a DHCP server on the shared interface).
You might be able to get what you want by just turning on IP forwarding rather than the whole NATD/DHCPD package, but I'm not sure:

I don't know the technical reason for it, but I seem to recall that computer-to-computer wireless networks always (and only) use WEP. I don't know if this is because WPA isn't possible or if they just haven't gotten around to adding it, but WEP is your only option.

Go to internet connections (you may have to choose classic representation first)
You can now see your wireless network card, among other things. Right-click and 'View available Wireless networks'.
Connect to the router. In most cases the router will be called 'default'.Check your IP-address: you get an IP address from the DI-524

Go to 'Run'
Type 'cmd' and press enter
type 'ipconfig' and press enter
your IP address starts with 192.
Surf to your router with your regular browser. For this you need the address and a password, which you can find in the documentation.

for this, go to Tools, Misc and switch off UPnP

If you do not have a D-link router, look up in the manual or somewhere else where you can disable UPnP
Now you cannot reach the router anymore again.
It is only from this moment that you can connect the router to the modem.
Important: Use one of the 4 LAN ports. Never use the WAN port!
Go to your network card via the control panel. Right-click and "Repair"
Now you should get an IP-address in the range of 10.nnn.nnn.nnn
If you still don't have 192... you've made an error. The DI-524 still functions as a router and this is not allowed!There are no Mac based instructions. The router is accessed and adjusted the same way whether you are using a Mac OS X, Windows or Linux. As noted in the other post it is done through your web browser which works the same from any computer. Even a Chrome Book.

Basically have a Win08 R2 DHCP server, and a 1941w router.
I've got the internet, got the lan clients getting DHCP ok (with ip helper-address set on the 0/0 internal interface).
Also have the SSID, and wireless clients can connect - but no IPs are being handed out, also not sure if I understand or did the bridging correctly or assigned IPs to the vlan or bvi1 correctly.
for ex:

Does anyone know how the internal DHCP server in these access points connects to virtual interfaces and bridges in the unit?
Is there some sort of default connection that connects the DHCP server to the native bridge group or VLAN?
In a test case, with an SSID in the native VLAN and bridge group, the 1702i serves an IP address to a wireless client no problem. But with a second SSID in a non native VLAN and bridge group, no IP gets served. My only guess is that since the bvi1 defaults to the native bridge group and VLAN, sub-interfaces also in this group are assumed to be in the same subnet as bvi1, or in this case:

Since the dhcp pool is set as:

There may be an assumption that anything bvi1 can talk to is in the ..1. subnet, so the above pool gets activated on a request coming through bvi1.
Is the DHCP server just hanging out waiting for a request from an "area" that is assumed to be on the same subnet as the given pool?
Do I need to somehow show the device what subnet the 2nd SSID/ subinterfaces are in so the internal DHCP server can decide it needs to go to work, or is there some sort of bridging between the DHCP server and the interfaces that needs to be done? I am trying to use the same DHCP pool for the second subnet at this point, since I assume I will need another router to service an additional subnet and DHCP pool.Keep in mind that DHCP is a broadcast packet to start. So the AP can only listen in the subnet that it has an IP address for.
Now, for any other subnet you can use the AP for DHCP but you have to have an IP helper address on your L3 pointing back to the AP.
That being said, I wouldn't use the DHCP server on the AP as it is limited. You'd be better off using a Microsoft server or some other device that is designed for DHCP.

Wireless and Ethernet Network Do Not Work Other Than SpeedTest
I have been having major problems with my Mac's Internet. Whenever I connect to my Wireless or Ethernet Connection, the signal start out strong and dies down to almost nothing (around .4 kbps) immediatly. I have been having this problem for a couple of weeks now. However, when I run SpeedTest.net, I get the connection speeds which I should be getting. My Network Application thingy (iStat Menus) shows a major increase from .4kbps to 6MBps when the speedtest in running. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?
It's a router all right. The next question is what is the "downstairs" device? Router or...?
The Aliant is configured through a browser interface and its IP address ought to be 192.168.2.1. Put those numbers in Safari's URL field and see if its webpage loads. If it does, you might be able to find a setting called "bridge mode".
Beware that I'm way out in the weeds with this suggestion - changing things in that unit may cause you even more problems. Since you said it is connected to a "wall Ethernet plug" I'm concluding that it should not be acting as a router, but that depends on what is upstream of that wall plug, and what functions the downstairs device is performing.
If the "wall Ethernet plug" is in fact a phone line and not an Ethernet LAN port then it is your router and you won't want to change that. -
WRT160NL built in DHCP server and WEB server stop to work
Hello all!
My home network based on the WRT160NL with one wireline PC, two wireless PCs and wireless printer works with no problems - connections are at full speed, no drop outs, wireless and wireline QOS is perfect. But then quite regularly every two or three days suddenly the router internal DHCP servers stops to work - I see with the wireshark that my wireline PC sends the DHCP requests to the router but router does not reply to them. If at the same moment the other PC's are allready in use and got theirs IP before they can surf the internet uninterrupted. Only router reboot helps to solve this situation. After the reboot DHCP server immediately acknowledges DHCP request from the PC and assigns him his IP number.
Sometime this situation occurs when IP address is already assigned, I can surf the internet, routing works, I can ping the router but I can not access the router's built in web server. Neither via IE, neither via FF.
I do not use P2P programs, IP traffic over the router is very light - no internal traffic between PCs, no file transfers to the USB flash key and WAN internet connection is 1Mbs. I have upgraded to the latest firmware Ver.1.00.01.17. Nevertheless problem occurs quite regularly about every three days.
I try to reproduce the problem more frequently and there is the way how to do that - I start to watch IP TV on my wireline PC (usually I watch my IP TV via the STB connected directly to the DSL modem) so IP TV multicast now goes through the router. It is about 5 - 6 Mbs and about 500 pps of IP traffic. This IP TV stream very often causes internal web server and DHCP server to stop. So although I can watch IP TV and surf the web on my PC with no problems, if other PC's are powered up during this situation they will not get theirs IP addresses.
I see in other posts on this forum that similar behavior can be triggered also with the heavy read/write traffic to the attached USB flash key.
So my conclusion would be:
- are the problems above known to Linksys/Cisco, do they acknowledge them, do they work on them
- when we can expect new firmware release - can we expect new release for this model at all

Why do you think that reconfiguring from the factory defaults would solve my problem? Are you 100% sure that this is the solution or are you just guessing?
Router offers backup and restore functionality where you can store current configuration into file on PC and latter restore it. Can I use this functionality in your procedure or should I reconfigure all router settings manually? -
Wired ethernet can't communicate with DHCP server
Hi all
I have a Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server. I recently changed a bunch of network settings, and since then I can't get the Mac to acquire an address from DHCP through the wired connection.
The wireless ethernet connects to the same router and acquires it's IP address, DNS, and router information through DHCP without a problem.
The wired ethernet connection is unable to communicate with the DHCP server. The router detects it, and sees it as having it's self-assigned ip address (169.254.74.247). The subnet mask is wrong (255.255.0.0 vs. 255.255.255.0) as well. Both are greyed out in network preferences when DHCP is selected. I've tried all of the obvious steps (restarting networking, rebooting everything, running the diagnostic tool, disabling wireless airport, etc.) to get it to work, with no change.
I can get it to connect with a manually assigned IP, but that's not a long term solution for my network.
I have had this issue with multiple routers. Currently I'm using a gigabit-e router - netgear WNDR3700. Other machines connect to the router just fine through wired ethernet (xbox360 and linkstation mini).
I'm new to Mac OS, but not new to networking. Any help would be appreciated.This might be an old discussion but it was helpful to me. Well, almost. After reading this discussion, I arrived the same place that xoofoo above did. After some poking around, I was able to find the answers. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, please!)
Here's what I did:
Launch "Server Admin" in Applications/Server folder
Open the list of services by clicking on the triangle next to the Server listed in the left pane.
Click on "Firewall"
Click on "Settings" tab
Click on "Editing services for" and select "192.168-net" (or if necessary, select "any".)
In the window below, go down the list and tick both "DHCP and Netboot client" and "DHCPDISCOVER". (hint, this list is sorted by ports number, go down and look for port 68).
Click "Save".
That should do the trick! Hope this is helpful to others in the future. -
E3000 Wireless Bridging to a Belkin Wireless Router
I need some help to setup a WIRELESS BRIDGE. I got a new E3000 which works great so far for my basic wireless and LAN needs. But I want to use my old Belkin wireless router (G) as a bridge to connect my BD-Live Blu-ray player and any other wired devices in that location of the living room. The Belkin router is access point / wireless bridging capable. I have the E3000 setup for DHCP, starting address at 192.168.1.100, and 50 users. I've set the 2.4GHz Channel to 9 (equal to the Belkin router).
Am I supposed to put the Belkin in Access Point mode and enable wireless bridging? Or disable access point mode and only use wireless bridging, and disable the routing functions (DHCP, etc).
Am I supposed to manually add a client (the Belkin) under the "DHCP Reservation" with the IP I give it under access point mode? Should this IP address be inside or outside the DHCP range?
This should be a good start. I'm sure there will be questions.
My first question is: Should IYour questions would be better in a Belkin forum. Basically, the E3000 is working and all configuration necessary has to happen on the Belkin.
I don't know the Belkin you probably won't be able to use it at as access point and bridge. Thus, I would say you have to configure it as wireless bridge only. It should also not do any routing/IP network related functions, in particular it should not operate as DHCP server or NAT router. When properly bridge, everything should be connected on ethernet level.
The IP address of the belkin itself has the only purpose for configuration. A wireless bridge would not require any IP address for its basic function of wireless bridging. Of course, as most people use IP most devices have web interfaces or other configuration interfaces based on IP.
Thus, you could either assign a static IP address on the Belkin or use DHCP and assign it either with DHCP reservation or a free DHCP IP address. The latter obviously makes it more difficult to access the web interface of the Belkin, if necessary.
I would recommend to set a static IP address on the belkin itself. This is more stable, e.g. in a case where the E3000 is not responsive after a power failure when everything is booting up.
Static IP addresses and reserved IP addresses should be assigned outside the general purpose DHCP address pool. -
Streaming through Netgear router wirelessly into AE
Here is what I want to do: Use iTunes on Apple (and iTunes on my Dell) to stream music through my wireless network (consistent of a Netgear router connected to the Internet through DSL) into the AirportExtreme.
Went through Airport Setup, could then see the Airport Express in iTunes but that overwrote the Netgear configuration and I could not go on the Internet anymore.
How do I get the Airport Express to hook up wirelessly through my existing wireless network?
Help neededWhile connected to the ethernet network (both the computer and the AX), reset the AX and reconfigure it to connect to your network using the AirPort Admin Utility. Deselect the option that says to Share a Single IP Address Using NAT and DHCP. The AX should RECEIVE its IP address using DHCP. Make sure Enable AirTunes and Enable of Ethernet are checked.

Apple built-in vpn client and dhcp hostnames
We have a number of Mac clients in our office which uses MS for dhcp and dns.
I've noticed that the mac clients when wired directly into the office network successfully get a dhcp lease and report their hostnames accurately to the dhcp server. However when these same clients connect to the office network via VPN (using the built-in vpn utility with Cisco IPSEC) they get a dhcp lease as expected, but do not register a hostname with the lease on the dhcp server. The lease is assigned to a blank hostname.
I assume this is a pretty common issue. Has anyone found a way to configure the vpn client to send the hostname along with the connection, either via the client config or through some other method?
Thanks.The VPN server is a Cisco 3030, however only the Mac clients have this issue. Windows and linux clients report their hostnames to dhcp properly even when VPN connected.

Internal DHCP Server on Wireless not working

I'm facing some problems to setup a DHCP server on a WLC 2504. I'll try to resume my configuration:
I have 2 networks: inside users (vlan 1) and external users (vlan)
My controller uses the port 1 to connect to the switch, which has a trunk with WLC.
I have two routers, one using vlan 1 (192.168.3.0/24) and one using vlan 10 (200.X.X.X). All ports to these routers are access ports on their respective vlans.
I have 2 SSID, one for inside, other to outside. Inside is working very well.
To the outside I created a DHCP escope and already set the IP of the management interface 192.168.3.119.

I see your device connected twice. it connected to the first SSID successfully and I can see it got IP 192.168.3.206.
Then it tries to get an ip from the other scope!! (while as the debugs show it is already connected and in RUN state).
That is strange!!

Windows XP won't recognize built-in wireless AFTER installing the drivers.

I have an iMac, post leopard release.
So I ran Bootcamp, everything went well, and windows XP runs fine. I used an XP Pro edition with SP2 and all of that is in order. I initially used a Leopard Install DVD of my friends to install the drivers, because I couldn't find the disk that came with my mac, and that worked until it got the wireless components, and then would crash windows.
I then found, luckily, and put in the Mac OSX install disk that came with my mac and that installed the drivers.
(or at least I think it did, it sure looked like it was, but afterwards it seemed as though all it did was install a program called Bootcamp that helps with running dual systems on a Mac.)
But XP wont pick up any wireless networks on the page where you can manage your networks. It's as if I have no built in wireless.
I don't know if you have to actually set up the built in wireless to work with windows, or if the disks I put in actually didn't install the drivers. but I'm starting to go insane...
(on one last side note, my wireless mighty mouse and wireless keyboard won't connect in XP either, BUT only after I used the Mac OSX install CD.... it's very strange....Any luck on the wireless issue? I too have a MacBook Pro that accesses the wireless internet with no problems on the Mac side. That is not the case on the PC side, using the Windows XP Professional. I can not access any internet, wireless or hardwired directly into the router. As a matter of fact, the Internet Wizard runs on the PC side and ends saying error.
I've contacted my internet provider, who walked me through the process to create a new internet account, still no luck. Ideas would be wonderful seeing that I have a single piece of PC only software I am trying to use for some charity work. -
Want to stream Netflix to blueray player via my existing Airport Express wifi. The player finds my wifi but the wireless connection fails - says, " Ensure DHCP server is enabled on router and restart router." I don't think I have a DHCP server. Suggestions anyone?
I can't speak specifically regarding LG, but the Whole Home feature on Direct TV (record a movie on one DVR and watch it on another TV in another location) just won't work with wireless, and I have a strong fast connection at 300 Mbps. Ethernet works perfectly.
Few audio/video products will accept "n" wireless at 5 GHz. I suspect that your LG accepts a 2.4 GHz signal, which would top out at 130 Mpbs.
If you are trying to stream High Definition video, especially at 1080P, my opinion would be that it is unlikely that you will be able to do so reliably using wireless.
Perhaps another user who has figured out how to do this will post with some input. -
Getting Airport Extreme (gigabit) to extend wireless onto Ethernet network
The people at the Apple store told me I could do this but I'm having a heck of a time figuring it out.
I have a wireless network (satellite internet with a netgear wireless router)...I also have a couple old Mac computers that don't have wireless but DO have Ethernet (the router and the old macs are at different ends of the house and I really can't run a cable).
So what I'm trying to do is get the Airport Extreme to pick up the wireless signal coming from the Netgear router and share it out to the old macs that are currently all Ethernetted together. I was able to accomplish this very easy using my iBook...I just signed the iBook onto the wireless network, went into the Sharing panel and set it to share the connection from wireless to computers using Ethernet...worked perfectly! But I just can't figure out how to do this with the Airport. I don't think this is a WDS situation, so I've been trying to use the 'Extend a wireless network' option in the Airport Utility, but nothing has worked. It seems like one of the main problems is Airport Utility's reluctance to let me use the 64-bit wep password that the netgear router uses. It's a 10 character password that's acceptable by all the computers I have with built in wireless, including my iPhone but the Airport software keeps telling me that it has to be 13 characters.
I'm just lost...any ideas?

So what I'm trying to do is get the Airport Extreme to pick up the wireless signal coming from the Netgear router and share it out to the old macs that are currently all Ethernetted together.
This would be an example of creating a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the Netgear wireless router and the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS ... so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AEBSn ... unless it's the Netgear WGR614 v6 model.
I was able to accomplish this very easy using my iBook...I just signed the iBook onto the wireless network, went into the Sharing panel and set it to share the connection from wireless to computers using Ethernet...worked perfectly! But I just can't figure out how to do this with the Airport. I don't think this is a WDS situation, so I've been trying to use the 'Extend a wireless network' option in the Airport Utility,
As you already know, Internet Sharing is a feature of OS X and not the AirPort base stations. In addition, the "Extend" feature of the AEBSn is meant to extend the wireless network of an existing AEBSn with another one. Sorry!
I'm afraid that you got a bit of a "bum steer" from the Apple Store folks.
