Broken character encoding in Web Gallery / Journal

Hi,
Is there another place to submit bugs to Apple than posting here?
I noticed that the web gallery and journals are exported with HTML indicating iso-8859-1 encoding, but the characters are actually encoded with "MacRoman" (which isn't supported in most browsers and doesn't have a standard encoding name).
I put an example here:
http://tmp.askask.com/2005/12/aperture_bug/
(See the ø in my name be messed up on the bottom line).
Speaking of character sets; it really should export UTF-8 rather than iso-8859-1. (But anything else than MacRoman would be an improvement!)

After i read elsewhere in this forum that you can "hack" the HTML Templates I thought I give it a try and change the encoding settings.
So I went to Apperture.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/WebThemes/ and went into the Directory of the Theme I used, Pictures. I opened detail.html, gallery.html, journal-gallery.html and journal.html with BBEdit (I think TextEdit is just fine, too) and changed the charset to macintosh as this seems to be the official name of the MacRoman encoding as stated here: http://www.iana.org/assignments/character-sets
I saved everything (you might make a backup of the original files first) and opened Aperture, exported my Web-Journal to a shared folder with my wife's PC and made some tests.
The encoding was recognized perfectly and automatically by Firefox (PC, 1.0.7), InternetExplorer (PC, 6.0) and of course Safari and Firefox on the Mac.
So it seems I can work around my second "favorite" bug in Aperture...
(My "favorite" is that I lost some projects when naming them with äöü's, it's soooo good to have a backup at hand)

  • Character encoding in web gallery

    Hi,
When creating web galleries, LR seems to use UTF-8 encoding for it.. Can I change it to use ISO-Latin-1? I use mostly Finnish in the galleries, and UTF-8 causes some of the Finnish characters to show incorrectly. A test gallery where you can see the problem:
    http://patej.1g.fi/judo/alkeiskurssi_k2006/content/index.html
My browsers try to read it as ISO-Latin-1-page, which results in showing 'ä' and 'ö' characters incorrectly. I can of course change the encoding the browser uses to view the page, but that isn't too convenient.. Any ideas how to create LR-galleries, which use ISO-Latin-1?
    looking forward to any advice,
    --patrik

    Well, it seems LR's output
does not validate. Hence some browsers seem to get the charset wrong as "iso-8859-1". (If I change the display to UTF-8 in the browser manually, the site looks fine.)
Try manually fixing at least the
first reported error (the omitted end tag in the charset-definition) and see if it works then.

  • Change the fonts in Web Gallery/Journal?

Is it possible to change the font in a web gallery or web journal and if so, how?
I cannot find anything in the documentation, but find it unbelievable that this would not be possible in Aperture.
    Sol

no, i cant figure out search either ...
what you need to edit is under ...
/Applications/Aperture/Contents/Resources/WebThemes/ (right click on Aperture - Show Package Contents)
pick the theme you want to edit ... choose the language then under assets is the css folder ...
i believe that the global.css holds the text family ...
if you arent familiar with css google "w3c schools css" ...
you will want to edit the font-familty attribute with whatever font you want ...
i recommend doing this to a copy of the webthem folder ... and rename it something ...

  • Character encoding in Web Dynpro source code

    Hi all,
I want to use special characters like "äüß" in Web Dynpro java code and can't find a possibility to specify the character encoding (ISO-8859-1) for Developer Studio Web Dynpro source editor.
After rebuilding or compiling the code looks like "äüß".
In the Java perspective source editor of eclipse/Developer Studio is a menu entry edit/encoding/... but not in Web Dynpro perspective.
Does anybody know how to set encoding?
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
Perhaps you can try converting your unicode characters to Java String literal with this web site  (http://www.snible.org/java2/uni2java.html).
The characters that you supplied convert to "\u00E4\u00FC\u00DF", perhaps inserting that as the String will help.
    Best regards,
    Patrick.

  • Character encoding across Web application contexts

If I submit an HTTP request encoded in SHIFT-JIS across Web application contexts,
the characters seem to get mangled. Do I need to do anything special to pass request

    - Which one of the above 4 I should use? Either one is fine as long as you include the meta tag
in HTML. If you want to support older generation of
browsers, then skip UTF-8. If you target i-mode
    phone browser, use Shift_JIS.
    - Do I have to worry about the encoding of the
Japanese data being entered by user in the input
fields in the HTML form?Yes. Use the same encoding as the encoding of the form.
Make sure to call response.setEncoding to set the
    enxoding for the parameter processing.
    - What should be encoding of the content of html
output generated by the JSP?Use contentType tag in page directive.

  • Web gallery/journal export detail image preset

what do the settings actually translate to on the web page? is it a different image size?

    Hi Philip,
    You can't.

  • TIP: Create your own Web Gallery / Journal Themes!

I didn't see a "proper" way to do this documented in the manual, but hopefully Apple will add that in a future version.
Until then you can "hack" it in.
Control-click the Aperture application, choose "Show Package Contents".
    Click "Contents" -> "Resources" -> "English.lproj" -> "WebThemes"
Copy one of the folders there to another name (say "My Theme"), go into the new directory and edit your custom theme.

  • Web gallery compression/encoding in iMovie '06

I have iLife '08 on a pre-intel mac so I don't have access to iMovie '08. I'm using the web gallery feature of .mac for my movies with less than stellar results.
    Here is my workflow:
    1. Create my movie in iMovie '06
    2. Export as a QT web streaming-medium file.
    3. Import above file into iPhoto '06
    4. Share movie to .mac web gallery via iPhoto
You can only get content into your web gallery thru iPhoto or iMovie which is why I have to go this route. The problem is, the compression/encoding via iMovie allows the viewer a choice of small/medium/large movie, with the large selection (supposedly) DVD quality. I obviously offer only one fixed steam at the present.
My question is this, does anyone know the settings in QT pro I can use to achieve the same result as iMovie '08?

no, there is no dialog box. When you select "import to library" iPhoto simply imports the movie file. From there, you can share it to your .mac gallery.
Also, I don't want to strip out the other sizes. I want to include them.

  • Removed Movie from .Mac Web Gallery But Broken Link Remains?

I published a movie to my Web Gallery successfully. I then tried to republish but got two movies in the Gallery. One movie worked and the other was a broken link. I removed the movie from .Mac using Share>Remove From .Mac, and the working movie was removed. But I am still left with a broken link in the Movies section of my Web Gallery. How can I remove this broken link?
I checked my iDisk and found \Web\Sites\_gallery, but I can't find the index file for the gallery (only folders for the albums).
    Thanks, Will

I'm having the same problem (broken links after a republish) -- and a few others:
    1) After about the first time, I have been unable to remove a movie from the gallery. I just get a connection error. I'm able to add movies (somehow the connection magically works) but removing fails most of the time.
    2) When adding a movie, for some reason, the title of the movie ends up replacing the "My Gallery" title for my entire web gallery. On the web gallery home page (over my photo albums and videos) it shows the title of the first video.

  • Quotation marks display as &quot in web pages, I'm using Unicode UTF-8 character encoding.

On many web pages, where a quotation mark character should appear, instead the page displays the text &quot. I believe this happens with other punctuation characters as well such as apostrophes although the text displayed in these other cases is different, of course. I'm guessing this is a problem with character encoding. I'm currently set to Unicode (UTF-8) encoding. Have tried several others without success.

Here's a link where the problem occurs. Note the second line of the main body of text.
    http://www.sierratradingpost.com/lp2/snowshoes.html
BTW, I never use IE, but I checked this site in IE and it shows the same problem, so maybe it is the page encoding after all rather than what I thought.
In any case, my thanks for your help and would appreciate any solution you can suggest.

  • Web Gallery CS4 Journal with Slideshow giving too much info

I have photos from a number of authors. There are also various functions for which I want a slide show for each. I would like the information on the left of the slide to give the Description (if present), and the person who took the photo.
No matter how many items I uncheck in various metadata panels, I still get:
    Creation date
    Date file modified
    Camera make
    Camera model
    x resolution
    y resolutin
    resolution unit
    Image size
    Metering mode
    File source
    Focal length
    Max aperture value
    Flash fired
I have unchecked any of these that I have found ANYWHERE in Bridge, but cannot get rid of them. This information is definitely not necessary on the website where they will be posted.
Does anyone know how to get rid of these items. It is a real pain to try to remove them from the xml file when saved to disk (and there are a LOT of photos to process.
I am using OSX 10.5.7 and supposedly Bridge is up to date.

    Hi there!
I have found a much easier way to fix this, and you don't have to start over by building your web galleries in Photoshop. You just have to alter the code a little bit.
By all means, create your way cool web galleries in Bridge, but look in the "resources" folder that Bridge creates when it makes a web gallery. Inside the "resources" folder you will find a file called "group.xml". Open it in Dreamweaver or whatever you use and view the code. Scroll down until you see <item>. The next lines will contain all that pesky information you want to delete. For example, you might see <title>filename.jpg<title>. Simply delete the file name so that you end up with <title><title>.
That's it! Repeat for all the information you need to delete, or write in something better. Then hit F5 to refresh the code.
Even an artist like me can do it. No geeky talents needed. Enjoy.

  • Delete Web Gallery or Journal in Aperture

    Greetings!
I wish to completely delete a web gallery I have posted to my .mac account. If I delete the gallery in Aperture does it remove the pages from my .mac account? Do I have to do this manually somehow? I am not finding specific information in the manual on this. All help is appreciated!
    Scott

You delete the folder with the same name as your site from your iDIsk. Sites published from Aperture are located in the myDotMacName/Sites folder.

  • Aperture 2.0 Web Gallery - Broken?

I am running Aperture 2.0 on a Mac Pro 2.8x8 10GB RAID0 OS 10.5.2 with all updates to graphics drivers etc. as of 02.17.08.
I have a project with 43 photographs, in 6 stacks.
    1. I select 3 photographs and click 'Web Gallery' button from Toolbar.
    2. The 'Web Gallery' is created in the Project Panel.
    3. The 'Web Gallery' project displays every photograph in the stack, instead of the ones I selected.
    4. Uploaded on the 'Web Gallery' is only ONE photograph. The first one in the stack.
The End result? When I view the webpage in Safari, ONE photograph appears. The first one in the stack.
I have been using the Web Gallery feature in iPhoto 08 since September, and Aperture 1.5 for over two years. I don't think I'm forgetting to do something as this process includes extremely few variables to complicate. Not only do I wish Apple spent at least a few man hours creating a more dynamic Web 2.0 experience for Aperture instead of not touching the existing technology (which is dated), but I wish the product I paid for would work properly?
Hopefully It's something I'm overlooking, because I'm sure other people are having this same problem.
    Graham
Edit: I suppose its worth mentioning that I do not have 'Primary Only' selected. And when I try to delete a photograph from a Web Gallery, unlike iPhoto where it will remove it from the Web Gallery ONLY, Aperture would like to remove the photograph permanently.. Hopefully thousands of people aren't deleting photographs by accident thinking its only removing it form Web Gallery because thats how it functions in other Apple Software?

As the manual suggests, all 27 photographs in this stack are similar in kind. I would like to publish 3 of these photographs with my stack intact. You're saying this is not possible?
If you want maximum flexibility in creating Web Galleries, DO NOT use stacks? What happens to the thousands of stacks that people have already created in Aperture and would like to simply get photographs online? Sounds like hours of reworking organization.

  • Web pages display OK, but print with garbage characters. I think it's character encoding, but don't know WHICH I should use. Have tried all Western and UTF options. Firefox 3.6.12

I used to only have troubles with headers & footers printing out as garbage characters. I tried changing Character Encoding, now entire pages have garbage characters, even though pages view ok when browsing.

If the pages look OK when you are browsing then it is not a problem with the encoding.<br />
It can be a problem with the font that is used and you can try to disable website fonts and posibly try a few different default fonts to see if that helps.
Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors: Advanced (Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above)
