Broken letters in embedded font

Hi
I've made a menu in Flex witch use an Embedded font and i
works fine exept that OQÖ dosent look good.
This is how I embed the font:
@font-face
src:url("font/AvenirLTStdLight.ttf");
fontFamily: myFontFamily;
.myText
font-size: 49px;
font-family: myFontFamily;
color: #000000;
All other letters look good, what can be wrong?

Problem solved... My .ttf font file was broken...

• Embedding fonts

I'm a bit confused about embedding fonts. I have Flash CS5, which the help files say automatically embeds fonts. But then the files go on to describe how to embed fonts, as if it needs to be done. Do I need to embed fonts for files made with Flash CS5?
The reason I ask is that when I replace text fonts in the template I'm modifying, the font changes its appearance, even though it says it is the same font as the one that came with the template. The font is Tahoma regular 11pt.
I tried embedding the Tahoma font, but I'm not sure I'm using the embed process correctly. For one thing, it doesn't seem to have many fonts you can embed. Tahoma isn't listed. When I enter text, it looks awful -- low resolutions, bad justification, ragged edges.
I have a MacBook Pro running leopard.
Than you for any help you can give.

I'm new enough to Flash that I don't fully understand what you wrote above. Is a static textfield one in which letters remain stationary? And by the characters actually used in the specified textfield, do you mean the characters I enter or the ones already there? In other words, if I enter letters that weren't used for that field in the template (eg, my name instead of the generic name), will they all be embedded?
I'm not sure embedding is the problem. I think I've done it. At least, Tahoma 11pt is now one of the fonts listed in the embed menu when I bring it up.
But the font looks awful. It is supposedly the same one as in the template, but it doesn't look the same. The size, resolution, and spacing are all bad, whereas in the template they look nice. It doesn't happen until I actually go into an element in Flash and change text. It essentially seems to "reset" the text to a new font that looks bad and doesn't space out properly.
Thanks for any help you can give me with this!

• Has anyone got embedded fonts in SVG to work on Mac OS X Lion?

I have used CS3, CS4 suite versions of illustrator on Snow leopard, and embedding fonts worked correctly,
but on several computers at work here, none of the CS5 or CS5.5 suite versions of illustrator embed fonts in SVG format on Lion.
I have also tried CS4 on Lion and still does not work...
Saving as SVG without fonts works fine,
Saving with fonts shows error message and no fonts are ever brought over.
This shows brand new ai file with a text box and three letters in standard font:
This shows saving as SVG to documents folder (does not matter where saving to, issue still exists):
This shows the SVG options (Note font is SVG, subsetting is common english and glyphs used.)
Error message:
Does not matter how many fonts are attempted to be embedded, no fonts (with glyphs translation) ever show up on the svg file.
Any suggestions?
Other than
reinstall lion completely, then reinstall CS5 then CS5.5(DONE, does not work)
reinstall lion completely, then reinstall CS5.5 only(DONE, does not work)

This is what i currently have to do:
Currently i use a secondary PPC computer with leopard 10.5 and Illustrator CS3 on it, and save the file as svg using those settings (fonts).
Open the CS3 svg in text edit
Copy fonts created in CS3 and then paste in CS5 svg file which i created on the intel computer with lion (mac 10.7)
Also tested this in mountain lion 10.8, still same error, have to do this stupid workaround for now....

• Printing to PDF broken after installing a font manager

I'm currently trying to figure out why after installing Extensis suitcase printing to PDF is broken. I have tried the following fixes that I have seen so far
I have gone into distiller and removed the other font locations in there and just supllied windows\fonts
I have gone into control panel regional and language optionss and checked the install files for complex script
I have gone into pdf printing options and unchecked the rely on system fonts only
I have also gone through and removed and readded the windows font files. However if the adobe fonts are removed it makes the distiller window huge and can't be restore even with removing and reinstalling acrobat.
Using the above I have gotten two pc's to work but the third continues to give me the following error.
%%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: findfont ]%%
Stack:
/Font
/Courier
/courier
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Currently the system is using acrobat 9 pro and extensis suitcase 3. I'm not sure where to go from here, I have tried to find any related posts but I have seen anything that I haven't already tried. Let me know if anyone has any ideas or needs more info.
Thank you

I am not very good at reading the Distiller error message. However, it is saying a font can not be found. Temporarily, go into the job settings file and select warn and continue or ignore for the embedding fonts warning. The default typically is set to fail. After you get a PDF, check to see which font is giving you problems. The fonts have to be included in Distiller or you will get this error and failure of you do not have one of the first two options selected. Don't know if that will help, but it is something to look at.

• Fix non-embedded fonts for USPTO filing

Hi,
The United States Patent and Trademark Office does not allow submission of PDF files with non-embedded fonts.
I know how to create documents from Word, etc. that comply with this requirement, but I frequently get PDFs from other sources that do not have all their fonts embedded, especially the asian fonts.
I know that one possible fix is to print the existing PDF as a PDF image. However, when I do this my file size becomes MUCH larger than the original. Re-printing to PDF seems like a very kludgy fix. Another very iffy fix I've used for large PDFs is to print the PDF document on paper and just scan it with our office scanner, which will keep the file size small but is a waste of time and paper.
Is there no better way to deal with the issue of non-embedded fonts?

Need Acrobat 9 Pro or Pro Extended -
Advanced > Preflight
In the Preflight dialog, open the "Options" drop-down menu and select "Create New Preflight Profile".
Give the new profile a name & save it.
In the dialog, at the left you'll see your new profile.
Locate and click on "Fixups" (2nd from bottom).
Over to the right, over the listing of fixups that appears, there is a find/search field.
Enter "embed" (the first three letters will do).
Two fixups are available.
--| Embed Fonts
--| Embed Fonts (even if text is invisible)
Select one. Under the fixup list there is an arrow pointed to the left. Click it. The center pane will display the selected fixup.
Click Save then OK.
The profile is available for use.
A Batch Sequence could be made that uses this Preflight profile to permit processing many PDFs at "one go".
[If you do not want to DIY, then use the "out of the box" profile located in the PDF fixups Group.
Both "Embed" profiles are there.]
Be well...

• Correct dimensions for a text with embedded font

Can someone please tell me how can I find the width, height and lineHeight for a text that is inside a RichEditableText component if I'm useing embedded fonts as cff?
I have a font that has big loops on letters like f,j,g. I
tried to get the infos from the richEditableText and richEditableText.textFlow. I even tried to compute the height of the text line by line with textFlow.flowComposer.getLineAt(i).height. But none of this got me a value big enought to cover the loops too.

Might be an issue with the font. Try checking each of the children in the RichEditableText. Some of them should be TextLines. See what they report.

• Embedded Fonts for Accordion Headers

Does anyone know how to get embedded fonts to show up in the
accordion header? i checked out the Adobe LiveDoc on customizing
the accordion component and it says to use the setStyle method. The
font I've embedded is Futura. Here's what I've tried using
myAccordion_ac.setStyle("fontFamily", "Futura");
myAccordion_ac.setStyle("embedFonts", "true");
However, simply embedding a font and setting that boolean to
"true" doesn't work. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work?
Thanks for any help.

• Link and embedded fonts

Hi,
I'm using this to set the general format of my text flow:
<TextFlow xmlns='http://ns.adobe.com/textLayout/2008' fontSize='16' textIndent='0' paragraphSpaceAfter='0' paddingTop='5' paddingLeft='0' paddingRight='0' lineHeight='100%' fontFamily='RockwellCFF'>
<TextLayoutFormat color='#ff0000' id='hoverOverBrand' />
<TextLayoutFormat color='#00ff00' id='mouseDownOverBrand' textDecoration='underline' />
<TextLayoutFormat color='#0000ff' id='defaultLinkBrand'/>
<TextLayoutFormat color='#0000ff' id='hoverOverEmail'/>
<TextLayoutFormat color='#0000ff' id='mouseDownOverEmail' lineThrough='true' />
I'm also loading some embedded fonts, that's working ok.
When I apply a link to the current selection, I use this code:
IEditManager( textFlow.interactionManager ).applyLink( url, linkTarget, false);
The problem I have is that when the link is applied, the selection looses it's font family value and there is no way to re-format it again.
is it possible to declare a CFF setting in the "defaultLinkBrand" so all links keep the original font family?
any ideas will be appreciated.

Seems to work for me. Attached is a complete example that I can build and run. The dump methods show what fonts are actually used. I don't have RockwellCFF so I used a different font. If you could modify this example until its broken and pass it back we'd be in a much better position to figure out where the issue is.
http://drop.io/oscar7878/asset/oscar7878-as
(not sure how to attach a file here - let me know if this doesn't work)
This is the output I get (I removed the clusters dump as that's not interesting). It shows that the embedded font was used - it appears to be visually the case as well.

• Embedding fonts - doesn't work

Another day, another Flash Catalyst problem.
I check the box to embed fonts when I publish, only when I preview my output they are nowhere to be seen. Bottom line, Flash Catalyst doesn't work on a Mac. I've had nothing but problems. This program isn't ready for prime time at all. I've used betas of programs that are much more polished than this. I believed that there wasn't suppossed to be major issues when using FC with 10.7 Lion.
That's not true, this program is so broken and flawed and such a frustration to use. Adobe can't be bothered to update even though they've had access to Lion for months. If they can't make a program that works then why bother releasing for the Mac platform at all?
Lets see:
1. Placeholders don't work.
2. Importing Illustrator files doesn't work.
3. Publishing with embedded fonts doesn't work.
These aren't minor issues. They are MAJOR PROBLEMS!!! How did Flash Catalyst see the light of day on the Mac? Why was it released? Are these problems isolated to 10.7? Why aren't these MAJOR DEALBREAKERS listed? Can anyone at Adobe stand up and admit that this Flash Catalyst on the Mac is a total fiasco?

I am sorry you are having trouble. I'm not running Lion on my Mac (issues with LDAP and a corporate network). With something like you are describing I would try two things before contact Adobe support. The first would be to try a fresh install. Maybe the OS upgrade wonked something. The other thing I would make sure is that my JAVA runtime is up to date. Flash Catalyst is built on Eclipse, which in turn in built on JAVA.
Beyond, that these issue are more that I can help with.

• Unable to apply embedded font swf to text in text layout framework

Hello,
We have created a swf for a given font (for e.g., Calibri.swf) which contains all the styles (Regular, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic).
We have created a xml which lists the name of the font and the corresponding swf file path. The names from the xml are loaded into a combo box in the application.
When we try to apply the selected font to a text in the text layout framework, it does not apply the same. It sets the font to default "Times" font.
Following is a snippet of code to apply the font to the text:
private function selectFont(fontXML:XML):void {
var path:String = fontXML.@source;
var myEvent:IEventDispatcher = styleManager.loadStyleDeclarations(FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.url.substring(0,FlexGl obals.topLevelApplication.url.lastIndexOf("/"))+"/"+path);
myEvent.addEventListener(StyleEvent.COMPLETE, function(event:StyleEvent):void{
var editManager:EditManager = textFlow.interactionManager as EditManager;
var itextLayout:TextLayoutFormat = new TextLayoutFormat();
itextLayout.fontSize = 20;
var fontName:String = fontXML.@name;
Alert.show(fontName);
itextLayout.fontFamily = fontName;
Alert.show( "itext = " + itextLayout.fontFamily);
editManager.applyFormat(itextLayout,itextLayout,itextLayout);
var flowLeafElement:FlowElement = textFlow.findLeaf(editManager.anchorPosition) as FlowElement;
editManager.changeStyleName(fontName,flowLeafElement);
Can anyone please let us know what is missing in the implementation?
Thanks in advance.
Vikram

My recommendation: unless you really care about ISWFContext implementations and the application domain issues, ignore Alex's post about embedded fonts.
It is a nice discussion about the inner workings of the domain and security of how this works but it is imho broken and is an insane concept to require an ISWFContext to just use an embedded font. It also breaks runtime CSS loading that has fonts embedded in it because the Flex compiler (last I checked) was also busted – it doesn't include the function necessary to create within context the font embed so that it may be applied. You can't create an ISWFContext with a compiled CSS file.
These issues were introduced in the last Flex SDK beta before FB4 was released in final form. There are multiple bugs logged against the issue of applying loaded font files to TLF text (in short, SWFContext is broken and you have to override GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction to return embedded or null, all the time).
Here's some more details to get you started - with links to at least one of the SDK bugs that were filed:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2656152
For example:
import flashx.textLayout.elements.GlobalSettings;
import flash.text.engine.FontLookup;
GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction = function makeValid():String { return FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF };
And you may need to do this after your font is loaded:
yourTextBlock.textFlow.invalidateAllFormats();
Disclaimer: I haven't seen the latest Flex SDK release to see if this was fixed. I have an AIR application with native process that builds embedded font SWF files for use and stub code for FB4 usage but haven't updated to the latest SDK yet to see if it's working properly.
Anyhow, your best bet is to look at the Flash Builder forums. I think this is/was a Flex team issue, not TLF.

Hi folks!

I have sveral PSD-Files (CS5 made) using several image- and textlayers.
Now I want to create multipage-PDF using Bridge that comes with PS CS5.
Works fine so far but Bridge does not embed those fonts used in the PSD!
Seems to me Bridge just merges all layers to one pixelbased image and saves it in PDF-format.
But that's no good deal!
In CS2 there was a much better solution in PS2 allowing to create multipaged PDF with embedded fonts.
Is there any chance to embed fonts with Bridge?
Plz don't tell me to use Acrobat or InDesign because I'm only using PS CS5.
Thx!

• Unable to load embedded fonts in TlF / FlowLeafElement

dears,
I use TextFlowUtil.importFromString and FlowLeafElement to make each some text have its own style, every some words have diffirent color, fontFamily, fontSize....etc
that is done here in the text attribute in this xml tag, and TextFlowUtil.importFromString and FlowLeafElement make taht perfect:

The problem is that i need to embed fonts, by this fontFamily="Arial" you can set font name which you want, but if i set font name which is embedded it won't work, like : fontFamily="ttf"
the embedded code is :
[Embed(source='/Resources/majallab.ttf',fontName='ttf',mimeType='application/x-font',embed AsCFF='true')]
var font1:Class; //This is only used to compile the code
I use Flex SDK 4.5,
what can i do ?
Thank you in advance,
amt

To use embedded fonts in a Flex component, the fontFamily for the component needs to be set to an embedded font that is in the same SWF as the other embedded fonts in the TextFlow. See my blog for more details

• Unable to load embedded fonts in Textlayout Framework using SWFContext.

Hi,
We are having issues with embedding/renderring fonts in swf.
Here is the code of the slide1.swf compiled by mxmlc.exe [Adobe Flex Compiler (mxmlc) Version 4.1.0 build 16076] with compiler parameters -- "-static-link-runtime-shared-libraries".
and checked with Flash player version 10.1 and 10.2 and 10.3.
package
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flashx.textLayout.compose.ISWFContext;
public class Slide1 extends Sprite implements ISWFContext
[Embed(source="C:/WINDOWS/FONTS/CALIBRI.TTF", fontName="Calibri", embedAsCFF = "true", unicodeRange="U+0041,U+0072,U+0069,U+0061,U+006C,U+0020,U+004E,U+006F,U+006D", mimeType="application/x-font")]
public static const calibri:Class;
[Embed("slide1/sldBg1.png", mimeType="image/png")]
public static const bg:Class;
[Embed("slide1/slide1.xml", mimeType="application/octet-stream")]
public static const slide:Class;

if (returns)
return fn.apply(thisArg, argsArray);
fn.apply(thisArg, argsArray);
Using Flex 4.1 SDK:--
When I load the slide1.swf in ActionScript Project it shows the embedded text.
But, when I load the slide1.swf in MX+Spark Flex Project, it gives an error :

textFlow.flowComposer.addController(new ContainerController(textContainer, containerWidth, containerHeight));
textFlow.flowComposer.updateAllControllers();
And, when I load the slide1.swf in Only MX Flex Poject, it shows the embedded Font.

Hi Jin-Huang
But when I use Simple ASProject with SDK 4.1 then it works fine but when I create Flex project then it give error
with SWFContext.
I think it's a issue of swfcontext or AS comunication with Spark components.
Please let me know if any solution.
Thanks

• How can I create a PDF with embedded fonts (not a subset of the font) from Excel?

I need to create PDF's from Excel spreadsheets. The PDF needs to have embedded fonts but every time I create one it only has a subset of the embedded font. I have tried setting preferences in the Acrobat add in (unchecked the "Subset Embedded Fonts" option and also tried with the Subset Embedded Fonts checked but the percentage set to only 1% in an attempt to force full font to be embedded.)
I also tried opening the resulting PDF with Acrobat Pro XI but could not figure out how to add the font in.
A method to accomplish the results from either tool would be great.

Anna;
Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
