C execve of $JAVA_HOME/jre/bin/java does not work

I have a static executable (I don't want to link shared libraries for security reasons) which ultimately tries to execve the java executable in the JRE (Linux). Unfortunately I'm getting the following errors:
Error: could not find libjava.so
Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment.
I've seen mention of these errors in other posts and have tried everything I can find (add stuff to PATH, CLASSPATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, JAVA_HOME, and more). Everything I've tried does not seem to do a lick of good. The execve function constructs an explicit environment, so I'm wondering if there is something basic that java needs in the environment that is inherited normally in a shell. I'm at a complete loss here. Any help would be appreciated. A very simple C program to reproduce this is pasted bellow.
#include <unistd.h>
void main(void)
char * arg[2];
char * env[10];
int i;
i=0;
arg[i++] = "-version";
arg[i] = NULL;
i=0;
//add any environment variables to env like...
//env[i++] = "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<java_path>/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so";
env[i] = NULL;
execve("/usr/local/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/bin/java", arg, env);
}

It fails because you do not set argv[0] to the path of the program you're calling.
Try:
#include <unistd.h>
int main()
char * arg[3];
char * env[10];
int i;
i=0;
// This is the big deal:
arg[i++] = "/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin/java";
arg[i++] = "-version";
arg[i++] = NULL;
i=0;
env[i++] = NULL;
execve("/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin/java", arg, env);
}

  • Java does not work at all upon using the update manager to update to firefox 3.6.10 for Ubuntu 9.0.4

    OS: Ubuntu 9.0.4
    Browser: Firefox 3.6.10
    upon updating to firefox 3.6.10, java does not work at all.
    websites that use java do not work at all anymore, when they worked just fine before the updating thru update manager. e.g. hulu website cannot play any of the shows.
    i can give the folder of bookmarked pages i tried.
    how to do that on here, i've yet to see if possible.
    i can even give saved text from the terminal concerning certain attempts.
    when i updated thru update manager, it gave some weird java plugin that wasn't there before "The IcedTea Web Browser Plugin IcedTea6 Java Web Browser Plugin (execution of applets on webpages)".
    i uninstalled this as instructed by an answer found in one of the pages i saved, cuz it was conflicting w/another java program the updater said i needed. right now, i don't remember for sure what it was. it perhaps was realplayer flash or Java itself. w/all the hours/days of searching i put in, it's difficult if not downright impossible for me to remember all the specifics of what i tried.
    i've searched throughout many webpages (including many searches on mozilla, ubuntu, java, etc) for instruction in fixing the problem.
    oh, and incidentally, on the Java site, when i try the verify test of Java, firefox pops up with that yellow bar right below the slew of tabbed website windows, giving the statement "additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page. (w/link to) install missing plugins ." which is what i do, go thru the requesting plugin installation. it comes up with, guess what, the IcedTea Java Plugin. i click on the 'next' in the "Plugin Finder Service" box that pops up, & all it gives me is "No plugins were installed. IcedTea ...Plugin failed. and the link 'find out more about plugins or manually find missing plugins'". the link takes me to some of the very things/plugins that wouldn't install in the first place. the Java test failure is a LOL funny, as what plugin it is saying is required (IcedTea) is a recommended alternate program to display the very test in the first place.
    i followed the given instructions on those many searched pages, in every case (barring what i may have just plain missed), but to no avail.
    i've even gone to the point of trying to reinstall the previous 3.5.13 firefox version, from mozilla site. even that wouldn't install.
    i've tried installing Java for my sys direct from it's site. nada.
    now it's time for me to post the problem & perhaps someone will come up with some kind of "dummy" way to fix it.
    until then many sites a regularly use are totally useless to me on this fast puter.
    the only way i can get to use such sites, are two choices: 1. use a dinosaur laptop, which is slower than molasses & cannot handle to any streaming stuff, or 2. use an available internet access puter at the library. but useage for ea person per day is limited to only one hour a day. and one can end up waiting for an hour or more ( in the busiest periods) to even get to use one.
    so, is there anyone at all, who knows any for-sure working fix for this problem?
    thanks muchly :^D
    p.s. i can't pay anybody any money for such help, as is required in certain sites (e.g. Java website), cuz i don't have any.
    i can pay in labor tho, if there is someway to find someone who can physically be at this puter w/me, taking me step-by-step
    sorry for the 20-pg essay. i hope it was all clearly understood. if, not, well, clear communication is always what is needed, ask away.

  • Java does not work on my Win 7 IBM-compatible PC using Firefox as my web browser

    A typical example of a website I would like to access & view is "www'cut-the-knot.org", a relatively mathematics-related website with a lot a very nice math content, where (roughly estimating) 70-90% of all web pages on the web site use Java applets to communicate that math content.
    I CANNOT view the Java applets (am restricted/prevented from doing so) --- on CTK or ANY other website!.
    I could go into all the details but, essentially, I have tried just about everything I can think of (or have found to do/try in discussions on the Internet by googling the problem) & nothing seems to have had any positive affect ... I can still not view ANY Java applets on ANY website! :-(
    I USED to be able to view Java content on the PC I was working on, although, a few months ago, I migrated from Win XP to Win 7 when MS stopped supported Win XP. I don't know when things changed but, "while I wasn't looking" (&/or paying attention) something DID change. :-(
    I'm using an IBM-compatble PC (not a Mac) with Windows 7 & Firefox as my web-browser.
    I'm just a private individual ... just a "little guy" in my home ... little personal technical knowledge, no big biz connections, no $ to hire expensive (or inexpensive) experts to come in & assess & fix the problem. I would even just like to know if there is some kind of future expected date when something MIGHT get improved, barring an action "solution" of the problem.
    From what I read on the Internet, some problem(s) relating to this issue has/have been extant for at least two years, dating back to at least 2012, if not further? I assume the problem would have been fixed long ago if it were easy to fix so, I'm not trying to be overly critical ... just asking for some kind of status report --- help/communication/knowledge/expertise/solution/etc ... & any information would be appreciated. Knowing WHAT the problem is is a high priority to me, certainly as well as understanding HOW TO FIX the problem, & WHEN that fix will occur.
    Java is a seemingly wonderful technology but, if there are such severe security risks that require it be enabled so that no one (I'll assume I'm not the only one unable to view Java applets) can use it, it doesn't have much value to visitors to websites that employ Java to deliver a majority of their content. Part of the problem, obviously, is that (like CTK) MANY websites ALREADY use/employ Java --- & therefore, end-users have almost no access to the content in/on those websites.
    Thanx in advance ...

  • Java does not work

    I have installed the java runtime environment and then when i went into addons it was not there. I have tried installing from file but it says it could not install because the file was corrupt. I am running puppy linux.

    Which Java version did you try to install (Java 6 or Java 7)?
    The rpm version or the tar.gz (or bin) version for Linux?
    If the rpm doesn't work then you can try the tar.gz archive and copy the files to a java folder in /usr/local<br />
    You will have to create a symlink to the Java plugin (lib/i386/libnpjp2.so) in a location that Firefox scans for plugins.

  • Need Java for online course. Java does not work with Mavericks or times out quickly?

    After upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.3 I am unable to connect to Blackboard through Java for my online courses. Research shows compatability issues. Same issue also occurs with my two Mac Air. is there a solution without taking down firewall and allow all applications?

    You might be able to add the website to the list of excepted sites on the Java System preference.
    You might be able to setup a proxy connection to your server that Java can speak over.

  • Custom URL Handler in Java does not work for JavaFX

    Hi,
    for the purpose of playing Media Files that are decrypted on the fly and then hold in memory with the JavaFX MediaPlayer we are trying to register a custom URL Handler. The thought behind that would be that with the handler JavaFX should be able to open a stream and play back the file (a bit like jar://). In a testcase isolated from JavaFX my handler including registration at JVM is working fine, but once i plug it into JavaFX it stops to do so. I'm calling the Media(String) constructor. It fails with "Unsupported scheme". It seems like that JavaFX is not relying on the JVM URLStreamFactory but rather implementing a separate mechanism to figure out which handler it should use thus failing in my use case.
    Is this expected behavior and if so can anybody suggest a work around?
    EDIT: Actually read the Javadoc for Media. It explicitly says that it only supports File, HTTP and Jar. So it is expected behavior however I am still open for suggestions on this.
    cheers,
    andreas

    I believe that the connection details are stored as part of the CR itself. Therefore if you update a connection in the CMC that might not change the parameters and credentials, especially when using sub-reports.

  • Error in writing to file '$ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/bin/java'

    Hi,
    I have installed Forms & Reports Services Standalone (10.1.2.0.2) on RHEL 5 and now I am applying the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2, Patch Set 3 (10.1.2.3), but OUI gives the following error:
    Error in writing to file '$ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/bin/java'.
    [$ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/bin/java
    (Text file busy)]
    I can't seem to find anything about this error on metalink or via google. Can anyone help me solve this? Thanks.

    Ok, this time I stopped all processes first with opmnctl stopall and emctl stop iasconsole. I then started OUI again to install the patch. It seemed to go fine - i didnt get that java error this time, but another error almost at the end of the installation:
    Error in invoking target 'proxy_install runm_install server_install cgi_install
    cli_install conv_install qv_install' of makefile
    '/opt/oracle/Forms10gR2/reports/lib/ins_reports.mk'
    According to Metalink ID 564174.1 - "Any installation of Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) on OEL 5.x or RHEL 5.x in which Reports is getting installed will fail with reports relinking errors" and the solution is as follows:
    # rpm -i xorg-x11-libs-compat-6.8.2-1.EL.33.0.1.i386.rpm
    # mv /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6 /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6.ORG
    # ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/libXtst.so.6 /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6
    I have already done these 3 steps before the base installation (just to avoid this error), yet I am getting this error even when the symbolic link already exists. Do you think I can just ignore this error and continue with the installation, or is there something else I need to check first?

  • JRE 1.3.1_02 does not work with new Nvidia drivers - HELP!

    I am a user and not a developer but this problem really does bite the big one. I have had installed JRE 1.3.1 and have used it to run LimeWire file sharing program for a long time (LimeWire is a java program from www.limewire.com) and also use it to see java applets on web pages in IE 6.
    I have since upgraded my Nvidia video drivers to version 2.8.3.2 which is the latest official release at this time from Nvidia. Since doing this I have no java at all anymore. Limewire refuses to run at all and there is an error report generated in it's resident directory. If I go to http://java.sun.com, IE hangs and then dissappears, leaving a bug report on my desktop. It seems that JRE does not like the new NT OpenGL dll at all in the new Nvidia drivers and will not run at all. The dll that causes the problem is:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvoglnt.dll
    I upgraded JRE to version 1.3.1_02 because Sun says this is the latest version and runs on XP which is what I have. Still java does not run at all anymore and I get the same bug reports. Has anyone found a workaround for this problem? This really stinks because now I cannot use LimeWire at all and if any web page has java on it, it dissappears right away and there is no more browser on my desktop. The only way I can even visit http://java.sun.com is if I use a Java blocking applet to filter out java applets on web pages.
    Please address this issue in JRE development and release a patch for it or a workaround.

    Chuck,
    I stumbled in here looking for help, I am a PC user,
    not a coder or developer (How sad. <g>). I checked for
    updates to the Nvidia driver (none), Windows XP (not
    at this time), and DirectX 8.1 (not at this time,
    these come on the XP updates page so far as I know.)
    Not too suprising...
    I have no idea of how to implement your suggestion on
    how to disable the JMV use of DirectX overal in my XP
    envornment. I guess that using Internet Explorer 6 to
    see web pages with Java on them are pretty much out of
    the question for now but I would be happy as a clam if
    I could get my LimeWire application going again.
    LimeWire is called via a desktop or Start menu
    shortcut in this fashion:
    Target Box: C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe -cp .
    RunLime
    Start In (directory): "C:\Program Files\LimeWire 1.7"
    So it appears that java is called via the javaw.exe
    file and passes a cp argument (whatever that is), then
    there is a period separator (dunno why) and then the
    "RunLime" statement that calls up the LimeWire
    program.to implement the suggestion, simply add -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true between "javaw.exe" and "-cp" separating it from them by a space on each side. Your result should look something like this:
    c:\windows\system32\javaw.exe -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -cp . RunLime
    >
    I cannot see any need for fancy graphic acceleration
    or DirectX being called to play for this application
    since it is basicly a file manager that shares.
    Nothing fancy about it.It's not the application choosing to do this, but Java itself. Java GUI applications specifically those who use the Swing GUI classes (like LimeWire, if I recall) automatically leverage DirectX. This is really valuable for Swing applications since they emulate Windows (or Mac or Motif) GUI widgets rather than using them, making fast access to display buffers important to ensure best performance.
    >
    Do you have any idea of how to pass your
    "-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true" statement to disable
    DirectX into the above call to start java and
    LimeWire?See above.

    Hanging by the edge of my seat, waiting for more input
    on this. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

  • JRE System-level settings does not work - JRE1.6.30

    Good day,
    I need to set deployment.security.mixcode parameter to "DISABLE" within of deployment.properties configuration file.
    Also I wish to place the deployment.properties configuration file is not user-specific path. The default location is
    <User Application Data Folder>\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties.
    TO change the default location I read about possibility to use the deployment.config for specifying the System-Level
    deployment.properties in the infrastructure.
    Unfortunatelly seems does not work. Someone have got experience about system level settings of deployment.properties?
    This is the configuration I have used.
    deployment.config:
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=FALSE
    deployment.system.config=file/:C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deployment.properties
    deployment.properties:
    #deployment.properties
    #Fri Feb 17 15:54:57 CET 2012
    deployment.version=6.0
    deployment.capture.mime.types=true
    deployment.browser.path=C\:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe
    #Java Deployment jre's

    deployment.javaws.jre.0.enabled=true
    deployment.javaws.jre.0.osarch=x86
    deployment.security.mixcode=DISABLE <<====
    Thank you in advance

    file\:C:/Program Files/Java/jre6/lib/deployment.propertiesI believe that the file is interpreted as a properties file, which means the colon and slashes need to be escaped. This would be it if you want to use a proper Windows path:
    file\:C:\\Program Files\\Java\\jre6\\lib\\deployment.properties

  • Pathname for java.exe does not work

    Hi all,
    on Windows, when prompted for full name to java.exe, I enter:
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\java.exe
    Next, pressing OK, I get an error:
    Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06.
    What am I doing wrong here?
    Kind regards - Remi.

    OK got it.
    I now use D:\oracle\Raptor\raptor\jdk\jre\bin\java.exe from my latest beta version.
    This appears to work just fine.
    Thanks - Remi.

  • Enforcing JRE version for Applet does not work - 1.4.2

    Hi,
    Our application (Applet) requires JRE 1.4.2 .
    I believe I need to use STATIC VERSIONING as we want the client desktop to ONLY use 1.4.2 for our applet.
    So I followed the instructions mentioned in

    and
    http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/versions.html
    But for some reason the JAVA Installer fails to install the package.
    It comes back with this pop-up error message:
