CAD drawings in Illustrator

Does anyone regularly use Illustrator to produce CAD-like mechanical drawings of items such as bottles? These would be fully dimensioned drawings with hatching and such.
Our Engineering department wishes to push their CAD work onto the Design Team, and can't understand why Illustrator isn't a good choice of software for these very detailed line drawings.
Your opinions please? We feel doing something like this in Illustrator would be quite slow, and of a lesser quality than doing it properly in CAD.
Any examples you may have and/or other places to check on the Net would be a bonus!
Thanks,
Gayle

There is nothing particularly "exotic" or taxing about 2D technical drawings. They can be done in a mainstream vector drawing program just fine. I mean, 2D orthographics and axonometrics can be done on a drawing board with vellum and pencil; so it can certainly be done programs in Illustrator's genre.
But of the bunch, Illustrator's standard feature set is probably the worst choice, because it is missing so many features conducive to technical drawing. No user-defined ruler scales. No dimension tools. No callout tools. No proper fillet/chamfer commands (a fairly useless arc tool), etc., etc.
Your Design Team would probably feel more at home in an Illustrator-ish program than a 2D CAD program. I would recommend your taking a serious look at either Deneba Canvas or Corel Designer 12, rather than painting yourself into the corner of mission-critical dependency upon an elaborate set of Illustrator plug-ins from a third-party vendor. The plug-in route comes with its own learning curve; it costs about as much as a competitive side-grade; it complicates your software updates and maintenance chores. And in the end you have a less elegant solution than you would have with a program that has the needed features properly integrated into the program's standard features and interface.

This is the part that wonders my mind. Why would your Engineering department want to offload CAD work (if that's really what it is) to a commercial design group? Nowadays, most Engineering applications model in 3D solids and surfaces and the 2D orthos are generated rather automatically. That's where "CAD" (more properly "CAE") becomes more exotic / precise / capable than general-purpose 2D drawing programs. Even if your Engineering department is only using 2D CAD applications they are still *engineering* (and therefore documenting) your products, aren't they?
Or is this really a case where the Design Group wants the Engineering group to be responsible for commercial marketing artwork?

  • Correct Scaling in Importing CAD drawings

I'm trying to find out the correct way to import CAD drawings into AI at correct scales. I have tried importing drawings in architectural, engineering, and decimal units and I haven't found a consistent way of bringing them all in at the right size. Before I begin, I correctly scale the CAD drawing in the viewport so that I know how big it should be once it's in Illustrator and I've had limited success in having the AI file come in at the right size. I feel that this has to do with calculating the correct "scale by" number that you're prompted to give once you import a dwg into AI. I feel that this number has to do with "inverse scale factors" but I'm not completely sure how to arrive at the right number. One thing is the inverse scale factor is a decimal and you are asked for a percentage so I'm sure this makes a difference. If you all could tell me about the correct ways of bringing in drawings in engineering, architectural, and decimal that would be fantastic. If you could make note of how this procedure differs if units are inches or feet that would be great as well. Thanks

    Hi Jacob,
I don't have the drawings on hand to tell you exactly what scale drawings I had and what I did with them etc. I do remember that I was trying to bring in a decimal units drawing in feet I believe at a 1"=500' scale. The inverse scale factor of that is .000167 as a decimal and AI asks for a percentage so I move the decimal to the right twice to get at .0167 but still when I bring the drawing in it's the wrong size, I don't have the exact dimensions of by how much. Thoughts?

  • Drawings from Illustrator

    Hi! I using IND3
I working a lot with an assembly instructions that are made of complicated drawings from Illustrator and Freehand. I using copy-paste from Illustrator because I need to edit drawings inside Indesign. Usually everything is OK, but sometimes indesign is telling me that there are to many lines and pasting as embedded eps. What you can to suggest ? Thanks.

    Thanks for help
The simplify command is not good for my situation because I have a kind of very accurate technical drawing. So a began to look for a part of drawing that is a problem. Because usually everything is OK and no problem to copy from AI to INDD. And I've realized that there was a part build from a lot of circles (peg board). I've combined them together in AI to be Compound Shape (from pathfinder) and that's it!
Problem was resolved. Thanks to every body!

  • AutoCAD drawings INTO Illustrator / How can I join line segments?

    Good day;
    ~ using Illustrator 5
~ importing technical drawings from CAD (think, complex mining shafts / exploded drawings and the like...)
~ want to manipulate imagery in Illustrator
~ all drawings are importing as individual lines / shape....a simple rectangle is four separate lines
~ is there an efficient way to "OPEN' or to "IMPORT" these complex drawings and have the CAD lines unite as closed shapes?!
~ isolating each shape / selecting nodes / 'joining' / is just NOT the best way to kill my day
~ willing to download solid recommended plug-ins
    S.O.S.!!
    Thank you in advance,
    Laura

    Laura,
Here is a thread for FrameMaker users that has some data you might find useful in doing what you want: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/316489
I have to handle this headache on occasion with MicroStation DGN files and I don't know of any plug-ins that will do this for either DWG or DGN. I try to get an EPS export from the CAD program first, if that export option is available, and bring it into Adobe Illustrator. This should be a standard for any CAD software. The next thing I try is PDF export and bring that into AI. If that doesn't work...
Your next problem is that version 5 of Illustrator is 17 years old! I'm sorry to inform you but that could be the problem you face, your software and computer are too old and that version of Illustrator isn't sophisticated enough to handle what you want to handle. You may have no option but to get a newer Mac or Windows computer and get a newer version of AI, at least!
I run Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 5150 and AI CS4 at work and I can barely get by at home with a 4 year old Mac Mini running Mac OS X 10.5 and AI CS2. That should give you a baseline to work from.
I hope this last hasn't upset you too much.

  • My vector drawings in illustrator cs3 look pixelated plz see screenshot

**** Notice the side of the girls hair its very serrated and somewhat blurry as well look down at her arm at the very bottom
I am using a mac os x version 10.5.8 and have been using Illustrator cs3 that I purchased for about 2 years and its never had this problem till now. I've just recently noticed a few days back that my vector drawings created in illustrator are looking serrated on the edges of my drawing, and this jagged serrated line goes all along the sides of the vector image and doesn't seem to go away when I zoom in or out......
And from what I know vector drawings created in illustrator can be resized and never pixelate but i don't know why its doing this.
I've searched online for all the possible remedies but nothing seems to get rid of that serrated line which makes my images look fuzzy on the sides.
I've made sure that I'm in preview and not pixel preview but that didn't work.
I went to my illustrator preferences to make sure that anti-aliasing is checked but that didn't seem to fix it either.
I went under the effects menu and clicked on Document Raster Effect Settings and changed that to 300ppi but that didn't do it either.
And also when I take my vector drawing from illustrator into photoshop, the serrated lines become more evident. I don't know what to do. The strange thing is that when i print the images out from my printer, the serrated edges don't show up.
But here's the thing: when I open up my past work that I created in illustrator when I wasn't having this problem, for some reason they are also now showing up with that serrated line on the edges, its really weird!!!!!
I've tried everything except for reinstalling the software, but just wanted to know if someone could help me before I tried this step or knew of something that might have gone wrong.
I also downloaded illustrator trial version cs5 today, and its doing the same thing as my illustrator cs3!!!!
    Plz help!!!

I was experiencing the exact same thing in Illustrator CS5. There was a pixelated edge on a vector drawing that was showing up. At first I assumed it was an anti aliasing setting or pixel preview or document raster settings as you did. Then because all else failed I was about to assume it was a screen artifact or bug of some kind.
However, the upon further analysis I found the solution-and it was right under my nose. I had applied an effect to the vector object (an outer glow) and–because I was going to scale it down drastically from the size I had originally drawn it at –I had gone to the object menu and expanded the appearance of the object which caused my outer glow effect to become a rasterized shape underneath my original object.
To remedy this: I simply zoomed in on the pixlelated object, selected it, ungrouped it, selected the top vector object path, nudged it to the right–REVEALING THE RASTERIZED SHAPE BENEATH!
So I would reccomend you try two things:
First select the view menu and choose "Outline" (command or control Y), then look to see if you have any solid "blocks" -this could indicate a rasterizing of some sort has taken place underneath your vector objects. To get back to regular display just choose "overprint from the view menu.
Secondly, you could select the vector object that appears pixelated and then check in the "Appearance Panel" to see if an effect (such as a drop shadow or outer glow) has been applied ,possibly inadvertently. Because just the applying of an effect will cause a "pixelated, jaggy edge" when viewed at high zoom percentages, or indeed any resolution for that matter.
    Hope this helps-

  • How do I convert B&W penciled book drawings to illustrator colored drawings?

I have an opportunity to with an author, but I want to see if I can even deliver first, if I were to take it. The author needs her current black and white drawings to be in color for a book she is putting online. The images for the children's book are scanned jpeg files of actual artwork. Her book art reminds me of stuff from the 80 or 90s - the drawings aren't Blue's Clues type of artwork. She had some already in color and showed me those. The illustrations are also created to looks to be pencil. As you can imagine some black lines are darker than others for example, lots of variety of colors in the form of lines, curves, squiggly lines to add details on the main subject (whether it is hair on a person, plants, clothes, etc).
Imagine the artwork being similar to these:http://staff.bbhcsd.org/kolism/files/2012/07/charlottes-web_1.jpghttp://literacyf1302.blog.ryerson.ca/files/2013/10/sm09.jpg
I have a few of her book illustrations and I am trying to figure it out. I've tried Image Trace (low color) but the lines become fat once you hit expand and you loose the details.
My question: 1. How do I convert this scanned image to an illustrator file with paths/points (like image trace>expand does)? 2. How do I convert black and white to color, as specific as down to the line of the pencil drawn for one detail.

    skoofi,
Have you considered using Photoshop, keeping the resolution adequate for the final size, rescanning if needed?
If you must, the same adequate resolution would also apply to the basis for Image Tracing, and you may try to experiment with the settings.

  • How can I view CAD drawings with 10.6 Snow Leopard?

I have a short term project which requires me to view and reference dimensions on a CAD drawing.  What is an efficient and reliable method to achieve this capability?
    Thanks
    JohnWD

It depends on the software company, some offer free viewers, I get a lot of drawings sent to me on Vectorworks. They offer a free download for Mac for viewing.
If the native program does not have a compatible viewer, ask to have them sent as a PDF.
    Good luck

  • Importing CAD files into Illustrator CS3 - does'nt scale dashed lines

In CS2 you could import a CAD file and it would scale dashed lines.
In CS3, Illustrator no longer does this. It scales the stroke weight, but does not recognize the dashed line information.
Is there a solution to this?
    Thank you

You can expand dashed lines first and then scale them.
Then you will get a whole bunch of vector objects, one for each dash.
I am not very familiar with CAD, but I know that imported CAD files are sometimes fiendishly difficult to edit because vector lines are often in small pieces that don't join up properly.
So I reckon Expand on all lines and then judicious Unite in Pathfinder would probably be the best way of going about things. Unite makes Compounds of closed paths so you have to be careful, otherwise you might get a huge file that won't print without splitting.
But remember that once you've expanded the lines you won't be able to edit their weight.
    Does this help?

  • Highlighting Text in CAD drawings

I would like to have the ability to highlight page items other than "text." For example, if a page has been scanned in (and has not had OCR performed on it) you cannot highlight the text, because Acrobat views the page as a raster image, not as text (because there are no fonts). Similarly, if a document was prepared in Auto CAD, and has no true fonts (but uses vector representations of letters), you cannot highlight the text. In Snagit, the highlight tool is actually a bow-drawing tool with the transparency set to multiply. I was able to achieve somewhat of a workaround to this problem by creating custom shapes in lllustrator, setting the blending space to multiply, and importing those files into Acrobat as custom stamps. The native transparency is retained. However, the proportions are locked, and the only way to change the color is to make a whole new stamp. It would be nice to have another type of highlighter tool in Acrobat, which mimics the bow-drawing highlight tool in Snagit.

  • CAD Tools and illustrator CS6

The fill colour setting under the CADdimensions tab always shows the broken process colour instead of the chosen spot colour.
Have tried to selected the spot swatch but unfortunately come out a broken process colour. Feed back from "Hot door",
it is a bug from illustrator, can the bug be fixed?

The two pieces of software have different definitions of a Spot color. If you want it in AI, make the Spot in AI.

  • Vector drawings to Illustrator CS6

I'm using Illustrator CS6 on my iMac (as part of a complete Master Collection) and Adobe Draw on my iPad Air2. Is there a way for files generated via Adobe Draw (or Lines, or Scetch, or ...) to be opened as (layered) vector-files, like i believe is possible in Illustrator CC? The only file-extension i can locate via Creative Cloud or share via Email is PNG/JPG.

If I am understanding your question correctly you want to use the "copy image to creative cloud" function within Draw to export a layered editable vector file (.ai) like you would create in illustrator itself.
It is my understanding and I am in no part an expert on this software but from what I understand of it is that you need to use the "Send to Illustrator" function within your drawing panel to create those sorts of files (illustrator .ai files). The copy image to create cloud is more of an image export creating a flattened copy of the file. Unfortunately there isnt a way of my knowledge to send a layered .ai file directly to creative cloud account, further I don't have CS6 anymore so I couldn't tell you if the send to illustrator function works with that software version either.
I also could not tell you if they are going to add this feature later for the creative cloud function though it would seem that they should if they haven't or aren't going to already.
I hope this helps some and I truly hope that someone that understands the software better can find a solution for you.

    Hi,
For your information, it looks like AECFilter.dll needed to convert DXF files in Acrobat exists only on PC and not on Macntosh.
I've the same Problem, I'm able to convert on the fly DXF files with Acrobat XI Pro CC on PC but It don't Work on my Mac.
Is it a bug ? or Is there something to Install ? PlugIn or anything eles ?

  • How do I import my Adobe Ideas drawings to Illustrator Draw?

In Ideas, sign-in with your Adobe ID and enable Creative Cloud file syncing. All the Ideas files on your iPhone/iPad will then sync to your Creative Cloud account. When that’s complete, you can view your Ideas files at https://creative.adobe.com or on your desktop if you have the Creative Cloud desktop app installed.
To organize your files prior to importing into Draw, you can put them in folders in Creative Cloud or on your desktop. Individual Ideas files imported to Draw will come in as single-page projects. Each folder containing Ideas files will be imported as a Draw project containing the imported Ideas files.
After you’re organized your Ideas files on Creative Cloud, you can import them into Draw. Tap the Draw icon in the upper left corner of the app and select Manage Files. Tap on the ‘Fetch All Files’ button to perform a one-time import of all of your organized Ideas files stored on Creative Cloud into Draw. All layers and artwork will be preserved after import.

You would go to the folders where your master photos are and import those into Photos.
There's no "import from Lightroom" to speak of. Your metadata may come across if you're using XMP sidecars, but adjustments won't.
