Calendar and timezones

i'm not sure if it's just me not quite using my phone properly, but i've had a couple of problems with the calendar feature on my 6280. the first time i noticed it was when i put one particular appointment into the calendar - i was in the uk at the time, but the appointment was in france. now, when i arrived in france the clock updated itself as normal to french time, but also moved the apointment forward in the calendar by one hour. i.e. it assumed that because i was using gmt when i made the appointment, that the appointment was gmt and duly compensated. i thought this was a bit strange.
however, next thing i know, just this week with the changing of the clocks to summer time, i found that once again, when the clocks change, all my appointmens were moved forward an hour. surely, when you put an appoinment into the calendar, you don't have to work out which time zone it is in or whether it's on summer or winter time or whatever. when you make an appointment you say, for example, 9 o'clock and you put in 9 o'clock into the calendar and that's it. you don't think, for example, 'ok the appointment is 9 o'clock in france, but that's 8am gmt. oh, but wait, the clocks change so i need to add and extra hour...' surely this is really badly thought out by whoever produced the sofware. i'm sure i can't be the only person in the world to have appointments in two different time zones...
can anyone help? or at least tell me that it's badly thought out and that i'm not missing the point somewhere.
thanks

I find that the best thing to do is this:
When you get a new phone, switch off the auto-update feature. It isn't worth the trouble.
Next, set the correct time zone (currently GMT+1 in the UK or GMT+2 in France).
Then set the time, and never touch it again.
When you move between time zones, or change from summer to winter time, always change the time zone rather than the time.

  • Confused with Calendars and TimeZones

    Hi, I'll explain what I want to do. I have a table with several of what I call a "Time Ranges". Each Time Range has a day (day of week), beginTime and endTime. I also have different clients, each from a different country. Each client has a timezone associated (the format of this timezone is not defined just yet, but it should be something like -3, -4, +1, etc).
    I want to get the current date, and be able to figure out if it is within a certain time range. For example, right now in Argentina is
    11:48 AM GMT-3
    This should match these time ranges:
    11:00~12:00 | -3
    10:00~11:00 | -4
    13:00~14:00 | -1
    And should not match this time range:
    11:00~12:00 | -4
    I'm trying to get the "current time for a certain time zone" with Calendar, and then be able to extract the time from that Calendar and compare it with my beginTime and endTime. I'm not getting anywhere.
    Something like this:
    Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance(TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT-08:00"));
    System.out.println(cal.getTime());Is printing GMT-3 time. Please help.

    Ok, I did it like this. The TimeRange Class has this method:
    public boolean isActive(String timezone) {
    Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance(TimeZone.getTimeZone(timezone));
    if (cal.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_WEEK) == this.day) {
    Time time = new Time(cal.get(Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY), cal.get(Calendar.MINUTE), 0);
    return (beginTime == null || time.after(beginTime)) && (endTime == null || time.before(endTime));
    return false;
    }Timezone should come in this format: "GMT-04:00" and Time is java.sql.Time.
    The only downside is that the Time constructor I used is deprecated. It says I should use the one that uses milliseconds since 1970. That kinda sucks, as I don't really care how much time passed since that time for this time. Any ideas of what I should use?forget java.sql.Time. use Calendar.set(int year, int month, int date, int hourOfDay, int minute) to set beginTime and endTime. use Calendar.compareTo(Calendar anotherCalendar) for the test.

    Not sure exactly what's going on in your TimeRange class but if the hour, minute, second and time zone in addition to the day of week (it seems that it does) for both begin and end time, then you can use this to create a Calendar instance to compare with the current time or to whatever other Calendar instance you want to check using its year, month day.

  • Ipad Calendar and Timezones

    I use mobile me on the waeb, my mac, iphone and ipad.
    I would like the ipad to be my "number 1" calendar so that I can keep it always open, but it is very erratic:
    1. Timezones- If I edit an appointment on the ipad after it has been input or synced I no longer have access to the timezone.
    2. The same goes for Calendar (Can't change from one calendar to another after appointment has bben nput or synched)
    3. Synching is erratic at best. events synch, don't synch or get doubled depending on how the wind is blowing. I tried all combinations with mobile me, mac, iphone and ipad and could not find a pattern.

    Thanks for all the help, but where do I swipe and delete?
    I tried that inside the calendar app, on the iPad and birthday calendar...but all it does is selects the calendar, and no delete button appears.

  • Iphone subscribed calendar - basic authentication, events and timezone

    hi,
    i'm attempting to use the subscribed calendar feature in iOS and having problems.
    1st issue: i've put an ics file that regularly gets updated on an at a web location that is basic authentication protected. Inside the subscribed Calendar settings there is a place to put username and password. When i click "Done" and iOS tries to verify the information, i get a popup saying "account requires a username and password"... I know basic authentication works and the username and password are correct because i've tested via browser and very simple passwords e.g. 123.
    2nd issue: I do work with people in other timezones and so i frequently get meeting requests from people in other timezones. In the ICS file i can see this information is published appropriately. e.g.
    DTSTART;TZID="Romance Standard Time":20110510T170000
    DTEND;TZID="Romance Standard Time":20110510T183000
    If I import this ics file into google calendar, the timezones are read appropriately and the meetings are scheduled accordingly. in the example above, the meeting shows up as being at 8am - 9:30am.
    on iOS the timezone is completely ignored. so i get the meeting showing up as 5pm - 6:30pm.
    I've tried fiddling with the "Time Zone support" option in settings, but this does nothing.
    Help on the issues above is greatly appreceiated. Personally I'm extremely frustrated with this.
    Thanks

    ...Thought I would keep alive the question about incorrect times for appointments created in other time zones on subscribed calendars. I believe this other thread -- https://discussions.apple.com/message/17318550#17318550 -- is asking about the same issue.
    I am experiencing the same issue, including the setting for Time Zone Support having no impact, with iOS 6.
    Any whiff of a solution yet?

  • Calendar, Timestamp, TimeZone and DateFormat

    I need to persist date and time with a time zone information into database. In the application, I use the Calendar to represent the data and converse it to java.sql.Timestamp when I need to store the date into DB, use its reversed process to retrieve the data. The following process works for my need in some degree.
    1. create a Calendar instance
    2. convert it to Timestamp to match the DB field type and save into DB
    3. retrieve the field from DB and convert back to Calendar (from Timestamp)
    4. process the data with DateFormat for a given TimeZone GMT
    My problem with the above approach is that it yields an incorrect data when a date time in DB is already in time zone GMT stored by another system process.
    What is a good approach in the regard?
    Thanks for your information in advance.

    Isn't Timestamp always "in UTC"? If you want to remember a TimeZone, would you need to store that separately?
    Then again, I have this vague recollection there's a database type that combines timestamp and timezone, but does your DBMS have it?

  • Business iCal sending out multiple calendar invites - one calendar and one account, 2 people using it for work

    First question:
    My boss has a Macbook Pro (iPad & iPhone), I have a Dell and iPad.  We use his iCal for our work calendar and my Outlook is logged into his iCal so that I can load appointments & send them out to clients.  He obviously has access to the same calendar so that he can also load appointments.
    We have realised that sometimes the meeting invite, although I only send ONE invite out, will send 6 invites to a person. Here below you will see the icons that appear next to the 6 invites that the person that receives it sees next to the invites. It is therefor 3 types of emails/invites that are each sent out twice to the client.  This is obviously not ideal. Could it be that I must not include my boss in the invites (as it is already his calendar sending out the invites), or what could it be that I am doing wrong?
    Second question:
    How can I ensure that replies (Yes/No/Maybe/Comments) appear in the iCal meeting, as people reply, but those replies I have to copy and paste into the meeting as they do not currently automatically update in the meeting.
    Third question:
    Any suggestions on a better system/method?
    Please help!

    I think I know what can help. I also support Mac users in a mixed environment, and find that being able to access a Windows machine to test settings for my iCal users is very very helpful. If you do not have one, I could also fix this one by adding the user's account to my one Mac that runs Entourage.
    On a PC: set up one of the problem accounts in Outlook, then go to Tools->Options & click on the Delegates tab. Click on a Delegate name (if they all have the same permission level, you can select all), then click the Permissions button. If the delegate have "Editor" permissions, there will be a little checked box that sends the delegate copies of all those meetings. De-select it.
    Lemme know if you want Entourage instructions or if that does it for you.
    The real question, of course, is why are there so many Exchange functions that iCal can't touch. Grrrr....

    Hoping for some help with a very frustrating issue!
    I have been syncing calendar and contacts on my iPhone 5 and Outlook 2007 using iCloud  2.1.3 (my PC is running Vista). All was well until the events I entered on the phone were showing up in Outlook, but not the other way around. I’ve tried the usual recommended steps: deselecting calendar and contacts in the iCloud control panel and then re-selecting, signing out of the panel and back in, and repairing the Outlook installation in control panel.  I even uninstalled iCloud on the PC and downloaded it again (same version).
    The furthest I’ve gotten is step 2 (and once, step 3) of 7 while performing “Outlook Setup For iCloud.” At that point I get, “Your setup couldn’t be started because of an unexpected error.”  After the first attempt at all this, all my calendar events disappeared from Outlook, although they are still in iCloud calendar and on my phone.
    Sound familiar?  Any ideas on how to solve this iCloud/Outlook issue?  Thanks much in advance!

  • HT4968 How can I take a shared calendar and recreate it using my personal ical rather than having to share?

    Here's the deal.  I stepped into an administrative position last fall and began building an entire calender schedule for our summer 2014 program.  I put a lot of work into building two months, however I have only just realized that the apple ID is for the former person who had my job (she left herself logged in on the mac I am now using).  My fault for assuming the apple id and login would be the same as the email account I am responsible for.
    I did manage to share one of the calendars I created using her apple ID, so I still have access, however, I'd feel better if I could somehow take this "shared" calendar and keep it as my own using the apple ID for the email account I'm responsible for.  In other words, is there a way to take a calendar that was shared with you by someone else and save it under my apple ID as MY primary calendar? I'm paranoid that this former employee will delete said shared calendar and I will have to start from scratch...

    Before you start see if you can export the calendar to a .ics file via the File ➙ Export menu option.  In your own account import the .ics file and that, hopefully, will bring in all the work you've done so far.

  • CU8 Update - Public Folder Calendar and Contacts show up in OWA that no longer exist and I cannot access when selecting.

    We recently updated to CU8. I went to test out the new Public Folder access to calendars and contacts.  I first go to Calendars in OWA and I see a list of several calendars.  I see one that is listed twice, one I can open and the other states "Couldn't
    open calendar - A connection couldn't be made with the shared calendar. Remove the calendar and try to add it again, or ask the owner to share it again." I also see other calendar's that we used in the past but no longer reside under public folders.
    I get the same error on them.
    For People, I can go there and I see a section called "Public Folder" and there is a contact list called "IT Team Contacts".  When I click on it, it states in the middle pane "Your request can't be completed right now.
    Please try again later."  This contact list is not on our public folders.
    Any ideas on why we I'm seeing these issues?

    Seems like some orphaned PF favorites. You should be able to remove them from Outlook, or via MFCMAPI

  • How to get calendars and notes from my iPhone into iCloud?

    Hello all,
    yesterday I got a new MacBook Pro Retina at work. This upgrade me to OSX 10.8 from 10.6, so I planned to use iCloud to sync my iPhone 5 and my Mac this way. So far I synced the devices manually via iTunes.
    However, so far I only got Contacts to sync with iCloud correctly. Calendars and notes just don't do it, although their sync is turned on on the iPhone as well as on the Mac.
    All my attempts to get it to work obviously destroyed the possibility to sync calendars via iTunes - after a sync there is just nothing showing up in Calendar. This is really bad as now I can only access my calendars via the iPhone.
    Since my iPhone now contains the most recent calendar and note data the question is even more simple: how can I get these data from my iPhone into iClous so they will also sync with my Mac (and from then on on all devices)?
    It doesn't work by just turning calendar sync on on the iPhone. When I do this, I now see two calendar groups "From my Mac" and "From iCloud". Great, but what I want is to replace "From iCloud" with "From my Mac".
    I have already reset iCloud, but this didn't help either.
    I'm close to desperation, so any hints are very much appreciated!
    Thanks and best wishes,
    Thomas.

    Solved - it was a general sync problem. Today I was not even able anymore to sync my calendars via iTunes. Problem and solution see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5505069.
    Best,
    Thomas.

    Hi all,
    I wand to sync my contacts and calendar between my iPad1 and my Windows Laptop.
    After installing the icloud sync software, I was only able to check "favourites and photostream" to be synced. The fields mail, calendar and contacts are greyed out and not available to select.
    I have browsed through the Internet, de-installed that software piece and installed it again, not change.
    Passwaords have been corrected according to the iTune needs (8characters, and so on).
    I do not know what to do, any ideas?
    Thanks

    When you say you are trying to get a file from your local c:drive, dio you mean that you are trying to import a file into your site from elsewhere on your computer, rather than 'getting' it from your remote server.  If you are trying to import a file from your local c:drive don't use the 'get' or 'put' buttons because they are just for remote connections, instead just use windows explorer to locate the file then either copy or cut and paste the file into the folder for your site.

  • I have cleared all apps from my ipad.  How do yo get rid of calendars and delete saved messages which is taking all mt storagw

    I have cleared all apps but still not able to download a rented movie.  The only spot where I have data stored is in saved messages andd calendars.  Cannot find the saved messages and cannot delete calendars. Any other suggestions because this was a very stupid purchase if you only have enough storage for the standard apps.

    Go to: Settings>General>Usage>and see what is eating up all of your memory. After you find what is eating up most of your memory just delete it thru:Settings>General>Usage. I would not think your calendars and messages would take up all of your memory.
