Call Transaction - Synchronous vs Asynchronouus
Hi ,
I have a text file which has 5 records containing LFA1-NAME1 & LFA1-LAND1 values.
Records 1,2,4,5 have correct values while Record 3 has wrong information.
I have uploaded the data using Call Transaction Asynchronous mode using following statement:
CALL TRANSACTION 'XK01' using BDCDATA mode 'N' update 'A' messages into
BDCMSGCOLL.
Since , its in Asynchronous mode after Records 1,2 are uploaded its skipping 3 rd record and Record 4,5 are uploaded. Its fine.
Now I have uploaded the data using Call Transaction Synchronous mode using following statement:
CALL TRANSACTION 'XK01' using BDCDATA mode 'N' update 'S' messages into
BDCMSGCOLL.
Surprisingly, here too after Records 1,2 are uploaded its skipping 3 rd record and Record 4,5 are uploaded.
What I generally know is with Synchronous Update mode Records 1,2 should uploaded and since Record 3 is wrong, the updation process should stop.Records 4,5 should not get uploaded. But its not happening.
Can I know what is the reason?
If required, I can also post the code.
Thanks,
Shivaa...
Hi Shiva,
Synchronous & Asynchronous mode in Data transfer have nothing to do with error records.
When Commit work occurs, Synchronous update retain the same dialog work process for updating database. While in Asynchronous mode, it search for update process for database update and program execution continue with the same dialog work process.
In case of error record, the program will not reach to that level where it has to trigger the commit work (it triggers only when the record does not contain any error) and so all the records except 3rd will get uploaded.

Dif betwen BDC call transaction and session method
Hi to all,
This is my problem. I want to know, what is the difference between BDC call Transaction method and Session method. where the situation we can use these methods.
I will be thankfull to all.Session Method :
Asynchronous Processing.
Transfers Data for Multiple Transactions
Synchronous Database Update
During Processing, No Transaction is started until the previous transction has been written to the database.
A Batch Input Processing log is generated for each session
Sessions can not be generated in Parallel.
The Batch Input Porgram must not open a Session until it has closed the preceding Session.
Call Transaction :
Synchronous Processing.
Transfers Data for a single transaction.
Synchronous and Asynchronous Database updating both Possible.
The Program Specifies which kind of updating is desired.
Seperate LUW for the transaction.
The System Performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION Using Statement.
No Batch Input Processing Log is generated.
These are the differences between session and call transaction method.
Call transaction is faster then session method. But usually we use session method in real time...because we can transfer large amount of data from internal table to database and if any errors in a session. Process will not complete until session get correct. -

hi could anybody tel me
call transaction method which one is preferred synchronous or asynchronous..?
what ll happen if we do other method..?
foreground or background which one ll prefer..?
what ll happen if we do otehr method..?
on which condition we have to use synchronous and asynchronous
on which condition we have to use foreground and background

Session method and call transaction methos which one is the sap recomonded
hi
PLease give me the answer to these questions.
session method and call transaction methos which one is the sap recomonded why .
2) if we want to maintain BDC program in all the systems.wt to d0Hi Revethi,
Here is the difference between the Session and Call Transaction method.
Session
Session method supports both small amount of data aswell as large amount of data
2) data processing is asynchronus and data updation is synchronus.
3) it process multiple apllication while perfomaning validations.
4) in session method data will be updated in data base only after processing session only.
5) system provide by default logfile for handling error records.
6) it supports both foreground aswell as background process
in bdc we use FM ... bdc_open_group " for creating Session
bdc_insert " adding transaction and bdcdata table for updating database
bdc_close_group " for closing Session
Call Transaction
Call transaction exclusively for small amout of data
2) it supports only one apllication while perfoming validations
3) there is no default logfile, We can explicitly provide logic for creating logfile for handling error records.
we can create logfile by using structure....BDCMSGCOLL
4) it doesn't support background processing.
5) data processing is synchronous and Data updation is Synchronous( default), in
this method also supports daya updation in asynchronus process also.
Syntax:
Call transaction <transaction-name> using BDCDATA
mode <A/N/E> update <L/A/S>
messages into BDCMSGCOLL. -
Get and Set Parameter ID in BDC Call transaction
Hi all
I have written this BDC program to run a transaction eg33 to install meter. After meter get installled System generates Device location number. I need to use this device location number in calling another transaction il03. but my data fetching using get and set parameter id is not giving accurate result. Kindly check my code and suggest where should I improve. Or whatelse can I do to fullfill this type of requirement other than GET and SET PARAMETER ID.

i think you should use the "CALL TRANSACTION" like the following one:
CALL TRANSACTION 'EG33' USING BDCDATA MODE 'A' UPDATE 'L' MESSAGES INTO IT_MESS .
then i think you can get the right value.
P.S: the different update model(from SAP document)
upd Effect
"A" Asynchronous update. Updates of called programs are executed in the same way as if in the COMMIT WORK statement the AND WAIT addition was not specified.
"S" Synchronous processing. Updates of the called programs are executed in the same way as if in the COMMIT WORK statement the AND WAIT addition had been specified.
"L" Local update. Updates of the called program are executed in such a way as if the SET UPDATE TASK LOCAL statement had been executed in it.
Other As for "A". -
What are the parameters in Call transaction method?
Hi ABAPER'S,
Please give me what are the parameters in call transaction method?
Thanks,
PrakashProcessing batch input data with CALL TRANSACTION USING is the faster of the two recommended data transfer methods. In this method, legacy data is processed inline in your data transfer program.
Syntax:
CALL TRANSACTION <tcode>
USING <bdc_tab>
MODE <mode>
UPDATE <update>
<tcode> : Transaction code
<bdc_tab> : Internal table of structure BDCDATA.
<mode> : Display mode:
A
Display all
E
Display errors only
N
No display
<update> : Update mode:
S
Synchronous
A
Asynchronous
L
Local update
A program that uses CALL TRANSACTION USING to process legacy data should execute the following steps:
Prepare a BDCDATA structure for the transaction that you wish to run.
With a CALL TRANSACTION USING statement, call the transaction and prepare the BDCDATA structure. For example:
CALL TRANSACTION 'TFCA' USING BDCDATA
MODE 'A'
UPDATE 'S'.
MESSAGES INTO MESSTAB.
IF SY-SUBRC <> 0.
<Error_handling>.
ENDIF.
The MODE Parameter
You can use the MODE parameter to specify whether data transfer processing should be displayed as it happens. You can choose between three modes:
A Display all. All screens and the data that goes in them appear when you run your program.
N No display. All screens are processed invisibly, regardless of whether there are errors or not. Control returns to your program as soon as transaction processing is finished.
E Display errors only. The transaction goes into display mode as soon as an error in one of the screens is detected. You can then correct the error.
The display modes are the same as those that are available for processing batch input sessions.
The UPDATE Parameter
You use the UPDATE parameter to specify how updates produced by a transaction should be processed. You can select between these modes:
A Asynchronous updating. In this mode, the called transaction does not wait for any updates it produces to be completed. It simply passes the updates to the SAP update service. Asynchronous processing therefore usually results in faster execution of your data transfer program.
Asynchronous processing is NOT recommended for processing any larger amount of data. This is because the called transaction receives no completion message from the update module in asynchronous updating. The calling data transfer program, in turn, cannot determine whether a called transaction ended with a successful update of the database or not.
If you use asynchronous updating, then you will need to use the update management facility (Transaction SM12) to check whether updates have been terminated abnormally during session processing. Error analysis and recovery is less convenient than with synchronous updating.
S Synchronous updating. In this mode, the called transaction waits for any updates that it produces to be completed. Execution is slower than with asynchronous updating because called transactions wait for updating to be completed. However, the called transaction is able to return any update error message that occurs to your program. It is much easier for you to analyze and recover from errors.
L Local updating. If you update data locally, the update of the database will not be processed in a separate process, but in the process of the calling program. (See the ABAP keyword documentation on SET UPDATE TASK LOCAL for more information.)
The MESSAGES Parameter
The MESSAGES specification indicates that all system messages issued during a CALL TRANSACTION USING are written into the internal table <MESSTAB> . The internal table must have the structure BDCMSGCOLL .
You can record the messages issued by Transaction TFCA in table MESSTAB with the following coding:
(This example uses a flight connection that does not exist to trigger an error in the transaction.)
DATA: BEGIN OF BDCDATA OCCURS 100.
INCLUDE STRUCTURE BDCDATA.
DATA: END OF BDCDATA.
DATA: BEGIN OF MESSTAB OCCURS 10.
INCLUDE STRUCTURE BDCMSGCOLL.
DATA: END OF MESSTAB.
BDCDATA-PROGRAM = 'SAPMTFCA'.
BDCDATA-DYNPRO = '0100'.
BDCDATA-DYNBEGIN = 'X'.
APPEND BDCDATA.
CLEAR BDCDATA.
BDCDATA-FNAM = 'SFLIGHT-CARRID'.
BDCDATA-FVAL = 'XX'.
APPEND BDCDATA.
BDCDATA-FNAM = 'SFLIGHT-CONNID'.
BDCDATA-FVAL = '0400'.
APPEND BDCDATA.
CALL TRANSACTION 'TFCA' USING BDCDATA MODE 'N'

MESSTAB-DYNAME,
MESSTAB-DYNUMB,
MESSTAB-MSGTYP,
MESSTAB-MSGSPRA,
MESSTAB-MSGID,
MESSTAB-MSGNR.
ENDLOOP.
The following figures show the return codes from CALL TRANSACTION USING and the system fields that contain message information from the called transaction. As the return code chart shows, return codes above 1000 are reserved for data transfer. If you use the MESSAGES INTO <table> option, then you do not need to query the system fields shown below; their contents are automatically written into the message table. You can loop over the message table to write out any messages that were entered into it.

Error Analysis and Restart Capability
Unlike batch input methods using sessions, CALL TRANSACTION USING processing does not provide any special handling for incorrect transactions. There is no restart capability for transactions that contain errors or produce update failures.
You can handle incorrect transactions by using update mode S (synchronous updating) and checking the return code from CALL TRANSACTION USING. If the return code is anything other than 0, then you should do the following:
write out or save the message table
use the BDCDATA table that you generated for the CALL TRANSACTION USING to generate a batch input session for the faulty transaction. You can then analyze the faulty transaction and correct the error using the tools provided in the batch input management facility. -

When do we go for a Call Transaction or Session Method in BDC
Hi All,
Please let me know the scenario when we will go in for
1. Call Transaction
2.Session Method.
What is the main difference between Call Transaction and Session Method
Regardshi,
Use the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement
Summary: With CALL TRANSACTION USING, the system processes the data more quickly than with batch input sessions. Unlike batch input sessions, CALL TRANSACTION USING does not automatically support interactive correction or logging functions.
Your program prepares the data and then calls the corresponding transaction that is then processed immediately.
The most important features of CALL TRANSACTION USING are:
Synchronous processing
Transfer of data from an individual transaction each time the statement CALL TRANSACTION USING is called
You can update the database both synchronously and asynchronously
The program specifies the update type
Separate LUW (logical units of work) for the transaction
The system executes a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement
No batch input processing log
Create a session on the batch input queue.
Summary: Offers management of sessions, support for playing back and correcting sessions that contain errors, and detailed logging.
Your program prepares the data and stores it in a batch input session. A session is a collection of transaction data for one or more transactions. Batch input sessions are maintained by the system in the batch input queue. You can process batch input sessions in the background processing system.
Your program must open a session in the queue before transferring data to it, and must close it again afterwards. All of these operations are performed by making function module calls from the ABAP program.
The most important aspects of the session interface are:
Asynchronous processing
Transfers data for multiple transactions
Synchronous database update
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
A batch input processing log is generated for each session
Sessions cannot be generated in parallel
The batch input program must not open a session until it has closed the preceding session.
<b>Hope this is helpful, DO reward.</b> -
Error when Calling Transaction in ABAP Proxy
Hi All,
I'm trying to call a transaction in synchronous ABAP Proxy, but there's a CNTL_ERROR in the details of SXMB_MONI.
I've checked some threads related to this problem, but they're not solved yet.
Please advise, can I use "call transaction" in synchronous ABAP Proxy ? Is there any additional setting / code to prevent the error ?
Thanks in advance,
Andy SHi Stefan,
I'm trying to assign marketing attributes in our CRM Business Partner Transaction, which is triggered by messages sent from some 3rd party application.
Recently, I find out that this transaction (TCode BP) raise the same error (CNTL_ERROR) if run background from SM35. So the problem is not about calling transaction in ABAP Proxy, but due to the TCode BP itself.......
My ABAPER friend is trying to find the BAPI to replace this call transaction .........
Thanks a lot for your response........
Regards,
Andy S -
Hi experts,
I have a screen where I can call another transaction. My problem is if I call another transaction, how can I know what was the previos program. So I need to pass the program name with call transaction somehow.
I did'nt find the relevant information in syst.Hi
Try like this
call transaction <t-code>
using (bdc table)
mode (display mode)
update ( update mode)
messages into message itab.
The bdc table must be declared like bdcdata
The (display mode) determines how the transaction will be processed: u2018Au2019 (display all), u2018Eu2019 (display errors only), or u2018Nu2019 (no display)
The (update mode) : u2018Su2019 (synchronous) or A (asynchronous).

How to use CTUPARAMS in CALL TRANSACTION
Hi ,
How to pass ctuparms in CALL TRANSACTIION.
Please give me some example.
Thanks in Advance,
Kuma A.Hi,
Check this example..
DATA: ls_params TYPE ctu_params.
DATA: t_bdcdata TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF bdcdata.
ls_params-dismode = 'N'. " No display
ls_params-updmode = 'S'. " Synchronous
ls_params-defsize = 'X'. " Default window size.
CALL TRANSACTION 'MM01' USING t_bdcdata OPTIONS FROM ls_params.

How to decide between call transaction and session methods.which one to use for data transfer?
and how to schedule session method in background mode?
Moderator message - Please search before asking - post locked
Edited by: Rob Burbank on Nov 23, 2009 9:38 AMHi Kiranmayi,
1. It depends on various factors
a. As per the requirement mentioned in TDD
b. If user/Clnt needs the Error Log to be displayed in specific format.
since, In u2018Call Transactionu2019, the transactions are triggered at the time of processing itself and so the ABAP
program must do the error handling.
c. We can update the database both synchronously and asynchronously. We can specify the mode in the program.
Faster than session method if uses Asynchronous update.
2. Whenever there is large no of records need to be processed and user interaction is not required then you canschdule the
program to run in Background.
In session method you can submit the session in background job using 'RSBDCSUB'.
syntax:
SUBMIT (SUBREPORT)
USER SY-UNAME
VIA JOB JNAME
NUMBER JNUMB
WITH QUEUE_ID EQ QID
WITH MAPPE EQ GROUPID
WITH MODUS EQ 'N'
WITH LOGALL EQ LMODUS
AND RETURN.
Note: You can refer the sdn site for further more details -

CALL TRANSACTION
BATCH INPUT METHOD:
This method is also called as ‘CLASSICAL METHOD’.
Features:
Asynchronous processing.
Synchronous Processing in database update.
Transfer data for more than one transaction.
Batch input processing log will be generated.
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
Features:
Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
Transfer data for a single transaction.
Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
No batch input processing log is generated.
http://www.sap-img.com/abap/difference-between-batch-input-and-call-transaction-in-bdc.htm
Among the two methods call transaction is better compared to session bcoz data transfer is faster in it.
Differences between call transaction and session.
Session Method:
1) Data is not updated in the database table until the session is processed.
2) No sy-subrc is returned.
3) Error log is created for error records.
4) Updation is always synchronous.
Call Transaction Method:
1) Immediate updation in the database table.
2) sy-subrc is returned.
3)Error need to be handled explicitly.
4) updation can be synchronous as well as asynchronous.
2) ya u can use using the N mode no screen.
3)u can't handle multiple transaction in call transaction.
4) u can handle multiple transaction in session using the BDC_INSERT fm.
5)When u go to SM35 u can able to see the error records.
Which is best?
That depends on your requirement. Both of them have there advantages.
According to the situation u can choose any one of these.
difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC Session method.
1) synchronous processing.
2) can tranfer large amount of data.
3) processing is slower.
4) error log is created
5) data is not updated until session is processed.
Call transaction.
1) asynchronous processing
2) can transfer small amount of data
3) processing is faster.
4) errors need to be handled explicitly
5) data is updated automatically
For session method, these are the function modules to b used.
BDC_OPEN_GROUP
BDC_INSERT
BDC_CLOSE_GROUP
For call transaction, this is the syntax.
CALL TRANSACTION TCODE USING BDCDATA
MODE A or E or N
UPDATE A or S
MESSAGES INTO MESSTAB.
Take a scenario where we need to post documents in FB01 and the input file has say 2000 records (2000 documents, not line items in FB01 but 2000 records)
In the BDC call transaction method
We call the transaction FB01 2000 times (once for each record posting) and if the processing fails in record no 3 it can be captured and start with reocord 4.
Eg: Loop at itab.
call transaction FB01
capture errors
endloop.
In the session method.
We do not explicity call the transaction 2000 times, but all the records are appeneded into a session and this session is stored. The processinf of the session is done wwhenever the user wants it to be done. Hence the errors cannot be captured in the program itself

http://www.sap-img.com/abap/difference-between-batch-input-and-call-transaction-in-bdc.htm
http://www.sap-img.com/abap/question-about-bdc-program.htm
http://www.itcserver.com/blog/2006/06/30/batch-input-vs-call-transaction/
http://www.planetsap.com/bdc_main_page.htm
Batch Input Session method is asynchronous as told by others here. But the advantage of this is that you have all the error messages and the data for each transaction held persistantly. You don't have to code anything for processing them or writing the logs.
But at the same time, the same feature can be disadvantageous if you need to react to an error or if there are too many errors to manually correct in a session. Since the session are created in the program and its execution is done seperately, you loose the trackability of such transactions.
With a call transaction, what was a disadvantage above will become an advantage. Call transaction immediately gives you messages back and you can react to it in your program. But the disadvantage is that, if you have several hundreds of transactions to run, running them from within the program can be resource crunching affair. It will hamper the system performance and you cannot really distribute the load. Of course, you have some mechanisms with which you can overcome this, but you will have to code for it. Also, storing the messages and storing the errored transaction data etc will have to be handled by you in the program. Whereas, in batch input session, your program's job is to just create the session, after that everything is standard SAP system's responsibility.
Ideally, you should do a call transaction if the resources are not a problem and if it fails, put the errored transaction into a session.
You can decide based on the data volume that your BDC is processing. If data volume is high go for session else call transaction will do.The call transaction updates will be instantaneous where as session needs to be processed explictly after creation.
Session Method
1) Session method supports both small amount of data aswell as large amount of data
1) Call transaction exclusively for small amout of data
2) it supports only one apllication while perfoming validations
3) there is no default logfile, We can explicitly provide logic for creating logfile for handling error records.
we can create logfile by using structure....BDCMSGCOLL
4) it doesn't support background processing.
5) data processing is synchronous and Data updation is Synchronous( default), in
this method also supports daya updation in asynchronus process also.
syntax:
Call transaction <transaction-name> using BDCDATA
mode <A/N/E>
update <L/A/S>
messages into BDCMSGCOLL.
BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
Features :
BDC is an automatic procedure.
This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
Types of BDC :
CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)

Main diff between call transaction and session method
hi frnds.
my friend went for an interview they asked her whts the diff between call tran adn session?
she told more thn one transaction we can call for an session she told itseems. but he told tht by cal tran also u cn call more thn one tran it seems... so please canu help me out regarding this question? how we hve to tell in interview?
in advance thanks....Hi
Batch Input and CALL TRANSACTION are both data transfer methods. Batch Input usually are used to transfer large amount of data. For example you are implementing a new SAP project, and of course you will need some data transfer from legacy system to SAP system. If there is no standard batch input program, direct input program, you would need to write your own data transfer program and it is going to be batch input program. CALL TRANSACTION methods is real-time method, whenever you run the program CALL TRANSACTION can be triggered. CALL TRANSACTION is used especially for integration actions between two SAP systems or between different modules. Users sometimes wish to do something like that click a button or an item then SAP would inserts or changes data automatically. Here CALL TRANSACTION should be considered. You use CALL TRANSACTION and you do everything automatically, collect necessary data, call transaction and so do database update. If any error occurs, show the user them.
Batch Input
With the Batch Input method, an ABAP program reads the external data that is to be entered in the R/3 System and stores the data in a batch input session. The session records the actions that are required to transfer data into the system using normal SAP transactions.
When the program has generated the session, you can run the session to execute the SAP transactions in it. You can explicitly start and monitor a session with the batch input management function (by choosing System - Services - Batch Input), or have the session run in the background processing session.
It offers management of sessions, support for playing back and correcting sessions that contain errors, and detailed logging.
All of these operations are performed by making function modules calls from the ABAP program.
The most important aspects of the session interface are:
Asynchronous processing
Transfer data for multiple transactions
Synchronous database update. During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
A batch input processing log is generated for each session
Sessions cannot be generated in parallel. The batch input program must not open a session until it has closed the preceding session.
CALL TRANSACTION
In the second method, your program uses the ABAP statement CALL TRANSACTION USING to run an SAP transaction. External data doesnt have to be deposited in a session for later processing. Instead, the entire batch input process takes place inline in your program. With CALL TRANSACTION USING, the system process the data more quickly than with batch input sessions.
You can update the database both synchronously and asynchronously. The program specifies the update type.
Separate LUW (Logical Units of Work) for the transaction. The system executes a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
No batch input processing log -
When we use call transaction and session method?
cud anyone tell me the exact difference between session and call transaction ? when we have to use ?
hi,
BATCH INPUT METHOD
Asynchronous processing
Transfer data for multiple transactions.
Synchronous database update.
A batch input process log is generated for each session.
Session cannot be generated in parallel.
CALL TRANSACTION METHOD:
Using CALL TRANSACTION USING statement
Faster processing of data
Synchronous processing
Transfer data for a single transaction.
No batch input processing log is generated.
