Calling overideen method in constructor

Hi ,
I want to know why is the overiden method of subclass is called from super class constructor,below is the code
import java.util.*;
class Super{
// Broken - constructor invokes an overridable method
public Super(){
overrideMe();
public void overrideMe(){
System.out.println( " in overide me of super class" );
public final class Sub extends Super{
private final Date date; // Blank final, set by constructor
Sub(){
date = new Date();
// Overriding method invoked by superclass constructor
@Override
public void overrideMe(){
System.out.println( " in overide me of subclass" );
System.out.println( date );
public static void main( String[] args ){
Sub sub = new Sub();
sub.overrideMe();
}

Vicky wrote:
My question is still unaswered Y is the overideen method of subclass called when subclass object is not created at allAs EJP already told you:
1. This is false.
2. There is only a single object. There are NOT separate Super/Sub objects. Always. Even after all construction has completed.
That object has everything defined in the superclass and everything defined in the subclass. The subclass's constructor has not yet run, but that doesn't matter. Constructors don't create objects. They only initialize newly created objects to valid states. So we have a single object, with all the Super's fields and all the Sub's fields. The Sub's fields still have their default values (0/false/null). That's all. Polymorphism still works like it always does.
and even there is no reference of subclass tooFalse.
There is one object. It IS-A Super and it IS-A Sub. The "this" reference points to it, so when we call foo(), which is equivalent to this.foo(), we are traversing the "this" reference to get to the single Super/Sub object and call Sub's overriding implementation of foo() if it's present, or super's implementation if it's not overridden.
and also i have another question creating a object of a subclass does it also means creating an object of super class and subclass ?Having read the above, you now know the answer to this.

• Abstract classes and constructors - cannot call abs. methods in CONSTRUCTOR

Let me explain the scenario:
I'm building a program in which I need to read a file (among other things) and I intend to use object orientation to it's fullest in doing so. I thought of creating an abstract FILE class which has the commonalities, and two subclasses SERVER_FILE and PC_FILE, which implement the abstract method GET_CONTENTS in different ways (OPEN DATASET / GUI_UPLOAD), same for the CHOOSE method which allows to select the file from it's corresponding source.
Initially I've used an interface but since another tasks like setting the file path are common for both, switched to an ABSTRACT class.
Now, the problem is, from the main code I intend to use a FILE reference to handle either type of file. At the instantiation moment I'd like the path attribute to be set; if it was not set by parameter, i'd like to call the CHOOSE method which is abstract for the superclass. Since this is common for either subclass, I need a way to code it once in the superclass. But I get an error because the CHOOSE method is abstract.
This is the problem code (extracts):

On a 4.6c system this code gave me a dump, while on my NW7.0 SP it doesn't even activate with the following error:
You cannot call abstract methods in the "CONSTRUCTOR" method.
- Following some suggestions from Java forums i've tried to define the constructor in the base class as PROTECTED or PRIVATE instead, then calling super->constructor from the subclasses, but I get this error in german:
Sichtbarkeit des Konstruktors darf nicht spezieller als die Sichtbarkeit der Instanzerzeugung (CREATE-Zuzatz) sein.
which Altavista translates like:
Visibility of the constructor may not be more special than the
visibility of the instance production (CREATE Zuzatz).
- I've also thought of defining the CHOOSE method as a class (not instance) one, then calling it before creating the file object which maybe solves the problem, but I see that approach more "procedural oriented" which i'm trying to avoid.
- Of course I could define a constructor for each subclass, but both would have exactly the same code.
I'm really lost on how should I code this. My main focus is on avoiding code dupplication.
I hope someone with more OO experience can see what I'm trying to do and sheds some light.
Many thanks for reading all this!

Dear Alejandro,
When i saw your code, you are trying to access an astract method CHOOSE(which is actually implemented in sub class) from the constructor of the base class which is not possible. By this time, we don't know which sub class it is refering to, so it gives an error. I see two solutions for this..
1. To define constructor in sub class and call the choose method from the consturctor of the sub class(which in this case is reputation of the same again for each sub class)
2. Remove the calling of choose method from the constructor of the main class and call it separately(after creating the object). By now we know which sub class we are refering to. I would have designed the program in the following way.

• Calling abstract method inside constructor

what will happen if you call abstract method inside a constructor ?

AMARSHI wrote:
Then wat is the purpose of that object then.
When u create an object then the control will move to the default constructor,If there is one. Not all classes have default constructors. Some c'tor will be called though.
inside the constructor u r having an abstract method.
But theere are 2 cases now:
1 the top-level class is an abstract class
2 the abstract class is an inner class.
1. for case 1 , u cannot create an object ,so no need of having the constructor.Yes, you can create an object. You can instantiate a concrete subclass. The abstract parent's constructor is still called, and that c'tor may call an abstract method, which will be implemented in the concrete subclass, or some class between it and the parent.
2.for case 2 u cannot have an object like:
outerClass obj = new innerAbstractClass()I have no idea what you're talking about here.

• Parent constructor calls abstract method

Hi everybody!
I'm wondering if there is something wrong with java or if the idea is just too ill?
Anyway, I think it would be great if this hierachy would work...
Two classes A and B.
Class A defines an astract method.
In A's constructor this abstract method is called.
Class B extends A and provides an implementation for the abstract method in A.
Class B also defines a member variable that is set in B's implementation of the abstract method.
In class' B constructor the parent constructor A() is called.
example:
public abstract class A {
public A() {
createComponents();
public abstract void createComponents();
public class B extends A {
private String string = null;
public B() {
super();
System.out.println("B::B() " + string);
public void createComponents() {
System.out.println("B::createComponents() begin");
string = new String("test");
System.out.println("B::createComponents() " + string);
public void describe() {
System.out.println("B::describe() " + string);
public static void main(String[] args) {
B b = new B();
b.describe();
}running the code above produces the following output:
B::createComponents() begin
B::createComponents() test
B::B() null
B::describe() null
why is the string member variable null in B's constructor??
thanks in advance

The answer is that the call of the super-constructor
is allways done before the initialization
of the member variable. That's all and that's the
normal behavior.
order :
- initialization of static variables
- call to the super-constructor
- initialization of the instance variables
- execution of the constructor
Since this is the advanced forum it is relevant to point out that that is not exactly true.
There is a step in java that 'initializes' member variables before any constructors are called, super or other wise.
From the JLS 12.5...
Otherwise, all the instance variables in the new object, including those declared in superclasses, are initialized to their default values (4.5.5)
Using the following code as an example
class MyClass
int i1;
int i2 = 1;
.When creating an instance of the above there will be three 'initializations'
// Part of object creation...
i1 = 0; // The default value
i2 = 0; // The default value
// Part of construction...after super ctors called.
i2 = 1; // The variable initializer (see step 4 of JLS 12.5)
Unfortunately the descriptions are rather similar and so confusion can result as to when the assignment actually occurs.

• Call a method of a class in a constructor of another class?

Is this good programming or should i do it in another way?
Consider an ordering system, where I have three classes, "Booking", "Table" and "Customer.
My idea is to create a booking assigned to a table and a customer, the fields in the booking class is a Customer and a Table and the constructor assigns values to these field.
In my Table class i have a method that books the table "bookTable(Customer customer)" and sets the availablility to 'false'.
So my question is, is it good programming to call the method 'bookTable()' in the table class from the constructor of the Booking class? Or should i do it in another way?

This sounds the wrong way around. What is the return value of bookTable(Customer)?
I'd expect it to return a Booking object that it creates.
Generally, you want the constructor to do as little as possible (while still only ever returning in a valid state, of course!).
The problem you can get when you call other methods is that you introduce the possibility of other objects getting access to your object before the constructor has finished running (i.e. before the object is completely initialized). This can lead to nasty problems that are hard to find and debug.

• Conventions: creating a new constructor and calling a method on it

Hello,
recently i had a little discussion about the following:
should we do it like this:
MyClass c = new MyClass();
c.doSomething();
or
new MyClass().doSomething();
now i also wanted to know if you should avoid one of the following, like do they use (in business programs for example) the first or rather the second.
I know it doesn't really matters, but if some1 could give some information about this little thing i would be grateful
Thanks in advance

maybe the method should be static?OP, you will need some level of critical thinking to untangle the kind of question asked. And a certain level of thinking to understand fully what experienced developers have said.

• Calling a method from another class. Please Help!!

Here is my full program. Like I said in my last post. I am having trouble calling the baseMakesError1 method. This method is called in the subcallsbase1 method. Also, it would be of great help if you could look for any other errors with with my program. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

• Calling a method on a jFrame from a jPanel that created by the jFrame

Hi all
I can not for the life of me work out how to do this.
Calling a method on a jFrame from a jPanel that created by the jFrame.
I have used this code to set a handle for one jPanel to another.
i.e I can create new jpanel and pass in handles from one to another but not back to the jFrame.
// this is sudo code
private Panel_Top topPanel;
private Menu_Panel menuPanel;
private DataPanel dataPanel;
//create new
topPanel = new Panel_Top();
menuPanel = new Menu_Panel();
dataPanel = new DataPanel();
// add handles from one to another
menuPanel.setDataPanel(dataPanel);
topPanel.setDataPanel(dataPanel);
topPanel.setMenu_Panel(menuPanel);
dataPanel.setMenu_Panel(menuPanel);
// in each class I use this to set
public void setDataPanel(DataPanel dataPanel) {
this.dataPanel = dataPanel;
}But I can not seam to get a handle back to the jFrame that created it.
Please help
as you can see I am trying but no luck so far
Thanks

• Calling a method in another class

I have an instance of a class that accesses a serial port. In it is a (non-static) public method which I want to run from an instance of a different class (both classes are defined within the same package). How do I go about doing that?
In addition, how do I see what instances of the classes in my application are running? And is there any way to get at the public methods and variables in them?

How do I go about doing that?
class Class1
public doit() {}
class Class2
public execute()
Class1 c = new Class1();
c.doit();
how do I see what instances of the classes in my application are running?You don't. Not unless you add code to track them yourself.
And is there any way to get at the public methods and variables in them? Depends on what you mean.
You can use reflection to load, create and run a method dynamically.
Every object instance has a method called getClass(). This returns a java.lang.Class. That has a number of methods that describe the methods, parameters, constructors, etc of the particular class.

• Export Internal table by calling static method

Hi friends,
Can u please tell me how to get internal table in export parameter by calling static method.
OR can u tell me how to declare internal table in method parameter.
Thanks in advance

Raja's method will work for all tables irrespective of the structure and is the best possible approach. However, if your requirement is simple and you do not have to deal with a lot many tables,
1. Create a Type-Pool, suppose ztypl
2. Within the type pool, declare a Structure type,
TYPES: BEGIN OF ztypl_struct1,
"Place your fields here
END OF ztypl_strict1,
"Create a table of type ztypl_struct1 here
ztypl_table1 TYPE TABLE OF ztypl_struct1.
Use "ZTYPL_TABLE1" as the "Associated type" in your method's Parameter definition in SE24.
eg.
IT_TABLE      TYPE     ZTYPL_TABLE1
If you are writing your class in an include,
METHODS my_method1
IMPORTING
it_table1   TYPE ztypl_table1.
Do remember to include
TYPE-POOLS: ztypl.
in your class's Constructor / Include program.
Please award points if helpful.

Siva.

Hai
Go through the following Code
*& Report  ZABAPOBJECTS_01                                     *
report  ZABAPOBJECTS_01                 .
parameter : p_matnr like mara-matnr.
CLASS lcl_material DEFINITION
class lcl_material definition.
public section.
data: v_matnr type mara-matnr.
methods : constructor importing matnr type mara-matnr,
get_material_description.
private section.
data : v_maktx type makt-maktx.
endclass.                    "lcl_material DEFINITION
CLASS lcl_material IMPLEMENTATION
class lcl_material implementation.
method get_material_description.
clear v_maktx.
select single maktx into v_maktx
from makt
where matnr = v_matnr and
spras = 'E'.
endmethod.                    "get_material_description
method constructor.
clear v_matnr.
v_matnr = matnr.
endmethod.                    "constructor
endclass.                    "lcl_material IMPLEMENTATION
data : obj type ref to lcl_material.
start-of-selection.
create object obj exporting matnr = p_matnr.
call method obj->get_material_description.

• How to make set up with first call of method of a custom class?

Hello
I have build a custom class with a few custom methods.
Method1 is called per every record of internal table. I need to set up certain parameters tha are the sme for all the calls (populate the range , to fill the internal table , etc). This should be done only once.
call method ZBW_CUSTOM_FUNCTIONS=>METHOD1
exporting
I = parameter1
importing
O = parameter2.
Loop at ....
<itab>-record1 = parameter2
endloop.
Methods2, 3 , 4 dont need any set up.
Can somebody tell me how to do it within class?
Thanks

Instance methods (as opposed to static methods) are called on an object, which is an instance of a class. Broadly, think of the class as a template for the creation of objects. The objects created from the class take the same form as the class, but have their own state -- their own attribute values. In pseudo-ABAP (this won't even close to compile), let's say you have the following class:
CLASS cl_class.
STATICS static_attr TYPE string.
DATA attr1 TYPE string.
DATA attr2 TYPE i.
CLASS-METHOD set_static_attr
IMPORTING static_attr TYPE string.
cl_class=>static_attr = static_attr.
ENDMETHOD.
METHOD constructor
IMPORTING attr1 TYPE string
attr2 TYPE i.
me->attr1 = attr1.
me->attr2 = attr2.
ENDMETHOD.
METHOD get_attr1
RETURNING attr1 TYPE string.
attr1 = me->attr1.
ENDMETHOD.
ENDCLASS.
When you create an instance of the class (with CREATE OBJECT oref), the constructor is implicitly called. You can pass parameters to the constructor using: CREATE OBJECT oref EXPORTING attr1 = 'MyString' attr2 = 4.
You then call methods on the instance you have created. So, oref->get_attr1( ) would return 'MyString'.
The constructor is called when the object is created (so, when you call CREATE OBJECT). At this time, the setup is done, and any subsequent methods you call on the object will be able to use the attributes you set up in the constructor. Every object has its own state. If you had another object, oref2, changing its instance attribute values would not affect the values of oref.
Static methods and attributes are different. A static attribute exists only once for all instances of the class -- they share a single value (within an internal session, I think. I'm not sure of the scope off-hand.) You also call static methods on the class itself, not on instances of it, using a different selector (=> instead of ->). So, if you called cl_class=>set_static_attr( static_attr = 'Static string' ), 'Static string' would be the value of static_attr, which belongs to the class cl_class, and not instances of it. (You can also set up a class constructor, which is called when the class is loaded, but that's another subject.)
To answer your question more succinctly: no, the constructor is not called before each method. It is only called when you create the object. Any subsequent methods called on the object can then access its attributes.
Please have a look at [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp2/helpdata/en/48/ad3779b33a11d194f00000e8353423/frameset.htm] for a more thorough treatment of basic object concepts. (The rest of that documentation is very thin, but it'll get you started. Also, it doesn't appear to deal with statics. You'll have to look elsewhere for that.)
