Can Automator set Built-in Output Volume?

I have USB Headphones and run Audio Switcher and I'm very happy with the combination as it lets me quickly flip audio inputs/outputs. Happy, that is, with one exception...
What I want to do is have something, possibly triggered by System Shutdown, that sets the volume of Built-In Output specifically to 0 so I don't have to wake the house up with the startup noise.
Any thoughts?

Hmm...the wiki refers to files I don't have.  /etc/hal/fdi/policy and /etc/hal/fdi/information are both empty directories (even when viewed as root).  Any thoughts?
I feel like an idiot now.  I should have guessed i needed to put those files in.

  • How can I set the HDMI output to 1366x768?

    1024x768 is an option from the ATV to the HDMI Port.
    But my TV is 16:9 and has the resolution of 1366x768 when I plug a computer into the HDMI port.
    If 1366x768 is not currently possible from the ATV, could apple be so kind as to add it,
    thanks,
    Jonathan

    slenpree wrote:
    as previously stated 1366x768 is the resolution of the TV and has not been pulled out of a hat.
    1366 x 768 is the number of pixels in the screen, it remains to be seen whether it's a resolution the TV will accept, but it likely will since it appears to accept 768 lines of resolution.
    However, the Apple TV outputs several widescreen standards for HD and ED, it also supports some graphics display resolutions, presumably for older non-wide screen projectors. The problem with graphic display resolutions is that there are many of them including non-standard resolutions.
    The Apple TV supports Full HD, HD and ED, it also supports VGA, SVGA and XGA, your TV has a pixel array that would fall into a classification known as WXGA which is non-standard to begin with but also includes 4 other resolutions which are also non-standard, WXGA is primarily a 16:10 aspect ration before a 19:9 one, so whilst you may not like it, the pixel array used by your TV has been pulled from a hat in terms of standard resolutions.
    AC mentioned something above which I'd like to expand on:
    Panels will always give sharper pictures when displaying output at native resolution, which is what you are trying to achieve.
    This is essentially correct but only part of the wider picture so far as your TV is concerned, (it isn't actually what you are trying to acheive). Content doesn't (widely) exist at 768p. Generally speaking you will only have content at 480p, 576p, 720p or 1080p, so something needs to convert this to 768 lines of resolution for your TV.
    There are two devices in the chain that can perform scaling, the TV and the Apple TV. In different scenarios this can lead to one or the other device doing the scaling or in some cases both. When setting up a system, one should note the capabilities of each device and try several options (if they are available) to get best results according to which device is best at scaling.
    However given your observations, it is obvious that the Apple TV is much better at scaling than your TV, which given the pixel array on your TV is a little absurd, since very few devices (DVD players etc) will offer 768 lines of resolution and your TV is always likely to be doing some scaling.
    Whilst you may not like the terminology of being pulled from a hat, your TV's pixel array is a non-standard size. There are as mentioned previously many non-standard sizes, to make them all available on the Apple TV just because some TV's perform inadequately when scaling isn't realistic.

  • How can i set permanent neat output format

    Hello Experts ;
    Good  Evening !
    Always i a, having problem with  table output format.
    please provide  permanent  solution for  neat output.
    i am not asking for  following output. i need permanent  solution because every i have to adjust  axx to a 99;
    My emp table output looks like  following below
    SQL> column econtact_no format a55;
    SQL> /
           EID ENAME           EQUAL      ESALARY         ECITY                EPERK
    ECONTACT_NO
             1 sona            mba        10000           xxxxxxx
             2 maya            mca        15000           xxxxxx
    Thanks !

    Hi,
    It looks like you're asking about formatting done by the front end.  How to control that depends on your front end, so say what front end you're using.  (This forum is supposed to be for SQL and PL/SQL language questions, so this may not be the best place to ask this question.)
    It looks like you might be using SQL*Plus as your front end.  As far as I know, the default column formats can't actually be changed in any version of SQL*Plus, but you can put changes into LOGIN.SQL scripts, that get run automatically whenever you start a SQL*Plus session, and that may be just as good for your purposes.

  • How can I set up a custom keyboard shortcut for volume control?

    Hi all,
    I use my black MacBook at work, connected to an external monitor and external keyboard. I'm looking for a way to set up the F buttons on my external keyboard as volume control, just as they do on my laptop keyboard. Looking for F3 to F5 to be volume mute, down, and up, respectively.
    I tried going into Keyboard Shortcuts in System Preferences but since there is no menu item for volume control I can't seem to add it. Anyone know how I can go about doing this or what I'm missing?
    Thanks
    Mike

    paste the following into Applescrpt Editor (it's in /Applications/Utilities)
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume</pre>
    this script will increase volume by 5 (out of 100) any time you run it. you can adjust this of course. save the script somewhere.
    You can use a 3rd part app launcher to bind a keyboard shortcut to it. I use Butler. there are many others: Quicksilver, ikeys, quickeys, Spark, Launchbar.
    this will work the fastest.
    If you don't want to use 3rd party tools for this you can make a service using automator but that might be a bit slower than the first option. open automator. it will give you a pulldown screen wiuth the choice of what you want to make. choose "service". set it to receive no input and be available in all applications. add the following "run apple script" action to the service
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    on run {input, parameters}
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume
    end run</pre>
    save the service, go to keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts->services and make a shortcut for the service you just created.

  • Can I set the audio INPUT to my pre-amp, and audio OUTPUT to the built in?

    I am using Logic Express 7. I want to set the audio input to my Firefox pre-amp, but set the audio output to my computer's built in speakers. I want to essentially record into the pre-amp and listen to the playback through my speakers. I can easily do this in GarageBand, but haven't found a way in Logic.

    The remaining problem I'm having is when I record into an "Audio" track via my microphone which is plugged into the Firebox, I'm still only hearing the playback from the Firefox headphone jack, not the computer's built in speakers.
    Did you select your new aggregate device in Logic's audio preferences? If so, then the problem is probably with your settings in the control panel which controls the Firebox - I don't use it, so I don't know what it's called, but it controls the routing and monitoring for the Firebox. Check the Firbox manual - there are probably two settings, one for playback and one for direct monitoring when tracking.

  • Can't select "Built-in Line Output" in Audio/MIDI prefs

    I have audio on my MacPro going out "Built-in Line Output" via the mini-jack at the back to a receiver. Everything works fine.
    When I open GarageBand's preferences to set up Audio Output it has defaulted to "Built-in Output" (the little speaker and jack in the front) and is grayed out, I can't select "Built-in Line Output" to send GarageBand's audio out the mini-jack at the back.
    Anyone know what's going on here?

    HangTime, Thanks for the replies and link.
    The problem has solved itself, which is good, but I have no idea why or how, which is mildly off putting.
    I went into system prefs and set the Sound output to "Built-in Output," thinking maybe that would "free up" Built-in Line Output for GB, which doesn't make sense, but whatever, none of it made sense. That had no effect in GB, same situation. So, I switched the system prefs back to "Built-in Line Output" and left things for a bit.
    Then the next time I went into GB everything was fine. The pull down menus were available and I could select "Built-in Line Output." Weird. [insert head scratch here]

  • With 10.2 I can only use system speaker output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps. How can I set this device in FCP 10.2? (it is set in both system preferences and midi)

    With 10.2 I can only use a system (e.g. speaker) output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used without any problems previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps (some like TwistedWave) setup in the program, and others (like Spotify) using system preferences & audio midi setup. How can I set the FF400 to be the sound output device in FCP 10.2? N.B. The FF400 is set as sound output device in both system preferences and audio midi setup.

    From the fcp.co forum. See if this does anything for you.

    I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me. This is the response I got from Apple, Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
    1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
    2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
    3. Select the Configure Speakers option
    4. Select the Multichannel tab
    5. Change the setting to Stereo Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.

  • Audio output volume setting

    I'm trying this for the first time. I want to be able to record voice and instruments through a mic. When I open a new track, the output volume slider is 'greyed out", and I can't adjust it. I've maxed every other volume control I can find, but the output is muted when I play it back. Anyone else had this problem?

    I want to be able to record voice and instruments through a mic.
    if it's a regular mic plugged into the computer:

    what "output" slider are you talking about?

  • I am trying to extend my airport extreme signal to another airport extreme can this be done? I have tried several time using the automated set up but it keeps failing... What am I doing wrong?

    I am trying to extend my airport extreme signal to another airport extreme can this be done? I have tried several time using the automated set up but it keeps failing... I have selected every possible security/password encryption level... What am I doing wrong? If it os possible where can I find step by step instructions? Please & Thank you!

    The challenge with the older round AirPort Extremes are that they are "g" wireless devices.
    When you configure them for WDS, the speed on the wireless network is cut in half...and probably will not have the bandwidth required to stream video reliably from either AirPort Extreme since both are affected by the WDS setup.
    There is not an "automated" setup for WDS. You have to do this manually on both AirPort Extremes. Unfortunately, it is not an easy configuration and it's easy to make a mistake and hard to recover without starting all over again.
    Apple's instructions for WDS are here if you want to give it a try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
    It is possible that it might work. Keep us posted on your progress
    Adding a single AirPort Express will unfortunately not help. You have to have "n" wireless devices at all router points.

  • Can I set up a 5.1 surround with the headphone output?

    Can I set up a 5.1 surround with the headphone output? I've got everything connected to the headphone output but it doens't seem to work very well.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Great Question!
    The output on the notebook is 2.0 unless specified.
     Most 5.1 headphones make a virual surround sound experience unless they require multiple mini jack inputs, optical, or coaxal.
    The only way to experience true 5.1 on a notebook is to have an internal 5.1 card (which is not included in current HP notebooks) or purchase an external to plug in (USB or ExpressCard).

  • Built-In Output has disappeared?

    I was using my mac today. Just playing MineCraft. I left to eat dinner with my family and after that i went gaming on another PC. When I returned to the mac 4 hours later he was still running. So I quit all applications but did not shut down. I set the screen into sleep mode using an active screen corner and went doing something else.
    I came back like 1 minute later and the mac was shutdown. I started it and while it was booting i disconnected my external speakers, USB Hub, ThunderBold-DVI Display and the charger and left only one external Hard Drive connected.
    Once it was booted I logged in and tried to listen to some music. This was not possible because I could not hear anything. I went into SystemPreferences/Audio/Output and the option for Built-In Output was gone. The only options where Digital out, SoundFlower 32bit and SoundFlower 64bit. (For the record: SoundFlower is a utility software which I use for recording the system sound for my videos.) I could not change the volume and  Couldn't hear anything through my recordings in SoundFlower. So I rebooted. I heard the duuun sound at the startup so I knew the output was working correctly but once again when I logged in I couldn't hear anything.
    Nothing is working. I can't get it to work through System Preferences nor Audio MIDI Setup. If I connect my earphones the output changes the Headphones and that works but when I disconnect it my mac becomes terribly slow for like a minute and Audio MIDI Setup crashes and the output changes to Digital Out. There is no red laser light in the plug on the left of my mac so I am out of ideas of what might cause this issue.
    Any leads?

  • Set audio in/output with shell command

    Hi.
    I want to switch the systems audio input and output with a shell command. I've found a command that can set the volume. Maybe someone can tell me if this is possible and if so, which command i need.
    osascript -e "set Volume 0"

    I think there's a messy way of doing it in AppleScript by addressing the menus in the System Preferences. But if I were you I would have a look at the tool that someone has created here:
    http://code.google.com/p/switchaudio-osx/
    It addresses CoreAudio directly I think to change the input/output method:
    will@Newton:~/Downloads/SwitchAudioSource-v1> ./SwitchAudioSource
    Please specify audio device.
    Usage: ./SwitchAudioSource [-a] [-c] [-t type] -s device_name
    -a : shows all devices
    -c : shows current device
    -t type : device type (input/output/system). Defaults to output.
    -s device_name : sets the audio device to the given device by name
    will@Newton:~/Downloads/SwitchAudioSource-v1> ./SwitchAudioSource -a
    Built-in Microphone (input)
    Built-in Input (input)
    Built-in Output (output)
    will@Newton:~/Downloads/SwitchAudioSource-v1> ./SwitchAudioSource -c
    Built-in Output
    will@Newton:~/Downloads/SwitchAudioSource-v1> ./SwitchAudioSource -t input -s 'Built-in Input'
    input audio device set to "Built-in Input"

  • USB input, built in output

    I'm working with a school who have just bought a roomful of 20" iMacs and a Sennheiser 136 USB headset for each machine. I know the headsets are not at all designed for recording or monitoring but the school decided on those for some reason so that's what they got.
    My problem is this, using the USB adapter you can record from the headset mic but the level on the headphones is too low. I unplugged the headphones from the USB adapter and put that into the headphone jack. In the system prefs I can set the input to the USB headset and the output to built in output. This works fine in GarageBandand and photobooth but not in Logic. In the Logic audio preferences if I select the Sennheiser headset as the device I don't get any sound out of the headphones. If I select either the built in mic or built in input the headphones work fine. Unfortunately I can't just plug the mic jack into the iMacs as it is a line input and the headset needs the power from the USB for the mic.
    Hope I'm not being too stupid and any suggestions are gratefully received.

    So you'll have to setup an "Aggregate device" in the Audio Midi Setup of your Mac combinig the USB and the built in outs of your. Here is a link to a good description of how to do that:
