  • How can I stop an event structure detecting keydown events until the vi has initialised?

My application has a sequence structure with 3 frames. First one initialises some front pane objects and controls, the second communicates with an external device via a serial port to a start condition and waits for this to complete by polling the device. The third contains the event structure which reads the device when the spacebar is pressed. The problem is that any pressing of the spacebar when the application is in the first 2 frames of the secquence structure is stored and executed as soon as the third frame becomes active. I have tried using dynamic Event registration but to no avail. Am I doing something wrong? can the keyboard be disabled until the second frame complete
    s?

I usually avoid sequence structures in favor of driving execution order through data dependency (error clusters are great for that). However, since you've already got one, you coul try to add another frame right before your event structure. In that frame, place another event structure that can trap that stray keyboard event. Put a tiny timeout value on it so it doesn't appear to "pause" your VI's response. That event structure will catch any bogus key presses that happen during initialization.
Having said all that, I still think the behavior is not proper. The event should not be handled if it happened before your VI gets to the event structure. For now, you can try that workaround.

  • Event Structure Edit Window

I am using LabVIEW 2013. When I place an event structure on the BD and right clikc and 'Add Event Case' or 'Edit Events Handled by This Case' the Edit Events window does not pop up.  An animation happens like it has opened up but the window is no where to be seen.  If I try to click anywhere else in labview my computer just beeps at me like the window is open and I'm clicking outside of it. If I press Esc I can get back to my BD and continue as normal. Unfortunately I can't edit my events.  Any ideas? Is there some option I may have changed that is making this happen?
    Thank you for any help

  • Can event structures be used w/o property nodes?

I want to know if there can be programming done using event structures but without using property nodes. My prgm has buttons and should be selected exclusively

Property Nodes really have nothing to do with Event Structures.
Property Nodes either Read from or Write to the various properties of the linked control/indicator. Event Structures react to an action from a control/indicator.
Drop an event structure and a single boolean button inside of it, configure the structure to the Value Change event for the button and hit run. The program will run, but the structure will stop the program until you click the button to run the event case, no property nodes required.
If this is not what you are referring to, provide a few more details and we'll se what we can do.

  • Local variable event structure

    Hi,
I am using an array control and event structure for detecting changes in the array value.
At first,I have performed changes in the array(during runtime) and the event structure detected it.
The next step was adding a parallel while loop in which I am writing to the control array(using local variable).
During the runtime the layout of the array indeed changed, but the event structure didn't detect it.
I have attached 2 figures :1)The loop of the event structure 2)the parallel loop.
Is it possible working in such way?
How can I make the event structure detect changes the software performed in the control array?
    Thanks,
    Leonid

  • Event structure will hang if i click the button fast

i trying to debug the program, and i realise that the event structure will hang the program is if i click the button that event structure detecting fast,
it will hang and stopped there...
is this a bug or what?
even i place a time delay in it also no use...
the event is mouse down for button

    Hi AxE,
I apologize for the oversight. Please find the attached VIs (now converted to LV 7.0). Apart from changing the "mouse down" event to "value change", I have also changed the mechanical action of booleans to "latch when pressed" . This would change the value of the button only during the duration it is pressed. As soon as it is released, the value of the button will revert back to its default value('false' in our case) so we dont need to change the value of the button inside the event case.

  • Can you share FP Controls between different Event Structures

I'm creating a program that will either read real-time data from an VNA on the GPIB bus, or read a saved s2p (Agilent) file and analyze it. The FP consists of 5 graphs, and various controls which handle events like printing, changing filters, or exiting. on the BD I have a case structure controlled by an operator selection pop-up. I tried using the same FP controls in the event structures I have setup in each case, as only one event structure would ever be executing at any given time, but the program doesn't seem to like it ast run-time. I've worked around the issue by creating "duplicate" controls and using the property setting to make them visible/disabled, etc., but the is seriously congesting my BD.
Anyone know a way to share controls with seperate event structures?

It sounds like the root problem is the overall structure of your program. I highly recommend that you check out the Queued Message Handler project template in LabVIEW 2012, that will show you how to utilize a single event structure and pass events to a consumer loop. If you program is too large to consider an architecture change at this stage of the game, then there is a workaround for your problem.
What is most likely happening is that you have the event structures all set to lock the front panel until the event completes. However the case structure that you have wrapped around these event structures is causing all but one of these event structures to be unreachable thus preventing you from handling the event. Again, as I stated above, the "RIGHT WAY" to fix this is to select a better program structure but the "kluge work-around" fix is this: Dynamically register for the value change event on all of the controls you are trying to trap events for. Dynamic events can be deregistered and re-registered at run time. This will allow only the event structure in the active owning case structure to be registered for the events, thus no other event structures will get in your way.
Disclaimer: This advice is given based on very minimal information and a great deal of speculation and may not be correct. Please include your code if you need further assistance.

  • Handling windows messages within an event structure

    Hello all.
I've got an event driven VI which makes use of an event structure. I'd like my VI to be able to respond to some custom windows messages (i.e. WM_USER) sent from a separate process that listens on a telemetry card (sends a message when it receives data).
I have tried modifying the Windows Messaging Queue VI example provided by NI so that the VI will process windows messages during the timeout event in the event structure but this doesn't seem to work.
    Any suggestions?
If labview events and windows messages don't mix then I guess I could do away with the event structure and go entirely with windows messages. This could be done by defining some custom messages that replace the labview events (e.g., W
M_STOPBUTTON_PRESSED = stop button, value changed event) and have the VI post these messages using PostMessage from User32.DLL and then catch these messages in the same manner as the NI Windows Messaging Queue VI.
My preference is to make use of the event structure if I can because its more inline with the labview methodology.
This is really interprocess communication question so if there are other ways of achieving the same result (sockets, named pipes, shared memory?) I'm keen to listen.
    cheers,
    Novak.

These 'sockets' sound interesting. What exactly are they? Could you direct
    me to an example?

  • Event structure to detect value change of a control within a cluster in an array

I have 1D array that contains a cluster. The cluster contains a numeric and a boolean control.
If the user starts to edit the numeric control value i would like to call one subVI, and if the boolean control value is changed, call a different subVI.
The array control on the front panel allows the user to edit a number of the array elements.
I would like to use an event structure to detect a value change in the cluster. When editing the Events, in the Event Sources panel i get the option to select only the array, not the cluster within the array or the controls within the cluster. Can the Event structure be opened up to show controls within clusters and arrays?
The solution i am using is to detect a mouse up event on the array and then use property nodes to  determine if the key focus is on the numeric, and  a case structure to determine which subVI to call. This works, but is there a better (simpler) way?
    Thanks, Blue.

    Thanks for the responses guys.
The tricky bit was that i wanted the numeric control values to flag they were going to be edited, so i could call a subVI, before their values were changed by the user. This is done by using the key focus property node, - i need to detect changes on the fly rather than post the event.  Probably didn't make this clear enough in my original post.
The array is of variable size depending on if the user decides to insert or delete elements. The user also has the option to click and edit the array without having to do to much scrolling through the array index, as the FP shows several elements at a time. The Event Structure does a good job of automatically determining which element in the array is being edited, and returning those values to the property nodes. Turned out simpler than i thought it might be at one point!
    Cheers, Blue.

  • Event Structure's value change, not detecting changes when tabbing thru array of clusters

Hi!  I have an array of clusters (int, int, string, int) control, and want to detecting changes made to the it.  I used the Event Structure's value change case on the array, it works excellent except that it'll only detect the changes when you click out of the element or press the enter key (the one by the numbers, not carriage return).  I want it to detect the changes when I tab thru the cluster or array too, but I can't figure it out... Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

Tried Value Change with my example done in 7.1 and it doesn't trgger an event.  That is why I suggested Mouse Down.
Curious. I did a few minor edits in 8.0 before saving as 7.1, but the simple value change event got triggered just fine when the value vas terminated with a tab in 7.1. Every time.  Strange....
    Are you on 7.1 or 7.1.1? Maybe there's a difference (I am using 7.1.1).

I attached my Vi from my old project (MY OLD VI). It is worked correctly.
But I decided that use event structure instead of case structure.
I attached my new VI as a picture and as a LabVIEW VI too (network_analyzer_8510_920527 Frequency Sweep.vi )
My graphs show by pressing "case 5: button (Bottom of page right hand).
Then I want to show each of graph in a large window( in a new VI) by clicking a key (for example "show 1").

  • Can a Vision image display's "zoom to fit" action be seen by an event structure?

The "Image Display" indicator from the "Vision" palette has a right-click (context) menu option of "Zoom to Fit".
Is there any way to capture the selection/execution of this action with an event structure?

I don't believe there is a way to do this with an event structure.  However, there is an image window property node for the zoom to fit option.  You can wire the output boolean into the input of a case structure and execute a different set of code depending on whether or not the zoom to fit option is selected.  This should give you the same functionality as an event structure.  Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Can not use Global Variable in Event Structure

    I am using LabVIEW 2009.
In my LabView project I have a Boolean Global variable called EStop. I can read and write the Global variable. If I double click on the Global variable, it takes me to EStop.vi which includes a Text Button. EStop.vi is part of my Project.
In one of my VIs, I have an Event Structure. If I go to one of the Event Handlers in that Event Structure and right click and then select Add Event Case, I get a list of possible events. But that list does not include EStop or an EStop events.
I want to Add an Event Case for EStop: Value Changed.
Why can't I Add events to an Event Case that include events on Global Variables like value changed?
How do I add EStop: value changed event to my Event Structure.

Yes .You can discard the panel close event by passing "TRUE" boolean value to the "discard ?" terminal which is lied in the right side of that panel close(filter) event.& It will work in executables.  See attached picture.
