Can i get a bigger Hard drive in my Macbook? :)

Hey everybody, a few questions for your guys. Thanks
Can i get a larger hard drive in my macbook
whats the largest size
Does it void the warranty
were can you buy them from
and is it easy install
Thanks guys

Here is a Do-it-yourself guide.
You also might consider maxing out your RAM since you plan on opening up the machine anyway. (Depends on which model you have, the older CoreDuo can use 2GB max, later Core2Duo models can use either 3GB or 4GB, depending on model.)
Other World Computing can help you find the parts that are compatible with your particular computer model, and they may offer a small rebate for your original RAM/drive.

Can I install a bigger hard drive on my HP Laptop dv9230us

Yes and in fact it can accept 2 hard drives. Any 2.5 inch wide SATA laptop hard drive 9.5 mm thick will work and those are available up to 1.5 TB I believe. To add a second hard drive you need a caddy and connector piece sold here:

There is a link on the page above which will lead you to installation instructions.
If you can give us some idea of what you are looking to do, we can link you to specific places to buy drives at good prices.

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

  • I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive thru the Apple Replacement Program? I did purchase the Applecare Plan but it expired in Dec. 2013.

FWIW, if you purchased the iMac in 2011 and purchased Applecare, you are covered for a total of 3 years. You mentioned yours expired in December 2013 - that cannot be unless you bought yours in 2010. If you bought it in December 2011, you should still be covered until December 2014 - if so, contact Apple/make a Genius Bar appointment quickly so the replacement is covered by the warranty. The hard drive replacement program might have expired, but as long as you're covered by Applecare, a drive replacement is covered.

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

  • Can I get a new and bigger hard drive on my macbook?

Right now I have an 80GB Hard Drive, It keeps getting filled up too easily and I need a bigger hard drive. When I chatted with a person (online) at the apple store they said it couldn't be replaced after it has been formatted or something, unless something was wrong with it. I'm not worried about losing information because everything is backed up to an external hard drive. Why isn't this possible? In January I got this new 80GB Hard drive along with a new battery. I'm wanting to upgrade it to around 120/150GB or something like that, whatever is in the hundreds. Any help would be appreciated. My macbook's specs are posted below. Your MacBook will support a 2.5" SATA drive. The largest drive currently available is 500 GB. Other sizes are 320 GB, 250 GB etc. The Apple tech was likely referring that Apple will not do a free replacement of your drive unless is was defective or failed. However, you can purchase the drive and install it yourself. It is relatively easy on the MacBook, or you can purchase the drive and have Apple or an Authorized Apple Dealer install it for you. The risk of DIY installation is that if you screw up Apple will not be responsible for any damages. If you are interested, please post back for a list of available HDDs and step by step directions and tips for installation.

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for an LC II (80MB)

I have a complete Macintosh LC II that saw most of the family through University (and me retraining as a dentist). The hard drive is an IBM HDD 80MB 3.5" WDS-L80 - does anyone know anyone still selling these/ can I use a substitute. Would like to keep the Mac as a feature in my office/study.

Wow, i just went to buy.com and their homepage is so messy i couldn't even find the computer stuff.
So out of curiosity, i checked eBay and 80GB SCSI hard drives are grossly overpriced. $50 is a lot even if it's new, which most are not. You might make an offer on one that's "buy it now or best offer".
But here are two possibly better sources:
    1. Check craigslist in your area for old used Macs. I suspect you can put in a SCSI hard drive up to at least 512 MB in size. (or do you want the "stock" hardware config..? )
    2. You could check state surplus in your area for old used Macs, but they're likely recycling anything that old if it comes in. You might talk to their computer person and ask if he'll save any "vintage" Macs for you if any come in.
I have an LC 475 someplace. Pretty cool little computer.  I might actually have an extra SCSI HD around too that i could part with.

  • Can I put a 1tb hard drive in my MacBook 4,1?

Hello everyone. I was wondering if I can put a 1tb hard drive in my MacBook 4,1. I'm not sure if I have the early 2008 or late 2008 model. Anyway I found a hard drive that meets the physical requirements of my computer but my question is will it work? I am currently runing snow leopard. Thanks.

The following is quoted from Section 700.10.c of the Magnussen-Moss Warranty Act:
    (c) No warrantor may condition the continued validity of a warranty on the use of only authorized repair service and/or authorized replacement parts for non-warranty service and maintenance. For example, provisions such as, “This warranty is void if service is performed by anyone other than an authorized ‘ABC’ dealer and all replacement parts must be genuine ‘ABC’ parts,” and the like, are prohibited where the service or parts are not covered by the warranty. These provisions violate the Act in two ways. First, they violate the section 102 (c) ban against tying arrangements. Second, such provisions are deceptive under section 110 of the Act, because a warrantor cannot, as a matter of law, avoid liability under a written warranty where a defect is unrelated to the use by a consumer of “unauthorized” articles or service. This does not preclude a warrantor from expressly excluding liability for defects or damage caused by such “unauthorized” articles or service; nor does it preclude the warrantor from denying liability where the warrantor can demonstrate that the defect or damage was so caused.

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for my intel imac?  **** thing dumped, less than 3 years old.

This is my first mac and the **** hard drive crashed in only 2+ years and of course the waranty is expired.  Can I replace the hard drive with any 3.5" replacement or do I need something special.  And if I do where can I get it?  I didn't see anything specifically for an intel imac at apple store.  I don't want to pay apple to install it, already spent enough money on this disappointing purchase.

any 3.5" Sata drive will do.  I recommend http://www.macsales.com/, or http://www.newegg.com/

  • Power supply dead? Can I get at the Hard drive?

I recently had a storm which blew one of my external firewire drives (it goes on but won't mount) and when I tried using my older G4 (Quicksilver, with OS10.3.9, and Classic) to boot up in OS9 and try my Norton Utilities, the G4 froze. It did it several times. I eventually pulled the power cord. When I plugged it back it, there was a spark (at the plug in point on the G4, not the wall outlet. Since then, it won't power up.
I tried booting it up in firewire disk mode and using my Intel MacPro, but no dice.
I did a search and have seen discussion on what sounds like my same problem. I hold the power button and the light goes on, but goes right off as soon as I let go.
I tried pressing the PMU; I saw a lot of discussion about the CUDA button but it seems these are one and the same thing. I removed the small battery and tried to get a replacement but have not succeeded as yet. Though I don't think that's the problem. It might be the power supply.
Anyway, here's my question: can I use the power supply and/or battery from an even older Mac, a PPC 8600?
And, whether or not that works, can I yank the hard drive from my G4, along with a second internal drive I put in (slave) in order to get data of it? (I'll give up trying to fix the G$ itself if I can just get my files off it.
*While I'm at it, can I take apart the external firewire drive that won't mount, and get at the files on that in some way. I tried Data Rescue ll but the drive still would not mount so that was useless.
Any help on any of these will be greatly appreciated. (Yes, I do have a nice big powerful UPS but the G4 and the external were no plugged in to it).
    Thanks

    Hi-
To recover your hard drives and data (including the external) get yourself a housing, and insert a drive, and move data to a different computer.
You'll want a firewire external housing with the Oxford chipset. I can recommend any of the FW or FW combo housings by OWC on the following page:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/add-ons-and-hubs/enclosure-kits
You will need a QS power supply-others won't work.
If you end up wanting a power supply for the QS, check eBay, or the following:

    http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/pog4quposu34.html
As for the battery, as long as it is the same 3.6v and form factor, any will do:

The Radio Shack P/N is 23-026.

  • How can I get by external hard drive to be seen by other computers on the Airport Extreme Network

I purchased and installed an Airport Extreme yesterday.  I finally got my computers to find it, but I cannot get my wireless laptop to connect to the external hard drive that is connected to the AE using a Cat5 cable.  I have already verified that the Cat5 cable IS good so please don't advise me to change the cable.  I am 36 hours into my purchase of the AE and ready to take it back to the store because it is NO WHERE as good as the sales rep reported it to be.

An ethernet connected drive is actually not part of the AE setup.
It is merely a client on the network.
So the first chore is to find it.
I saw in your other post it is iomega device..
    http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/800mseries/trblshoot_conf.html
    A few questions..
Other computers can access the network hard disk??
What OS is on the computer that is having access difficulty?
Can you please ping the hard disk.. on a Mac open the terminal and type ping followed by the address.
Or on a PC open the windows command and type the same thing.
Does the hard disk respond to ping?
Try mounting it directly in Mac by using Finder, go, connect to server.
    SMB://IPaddress
    Or CIFS://IPaddress or AFP://IPaddress
In windows type the address directly into the windows explorer address bar
    \\IPaddress

  • Can't get to old hard drive files

Well, I had a problem in which I couldn't get past the gray screen. I couldn't get to any of my files, but I could still see them through the disk utility using the start-up disk. Instead of writing over all of my files I just decided to buy a new hard drive. I bought the new hard drive and installed it, no problem. My laptop is working fine now. The problem is, I thought that removing the old hard drive and placing it into an enclosure would allow me to get to the files since it wouldn't need to boot up the OS. I bought an enclosure and installed the old hard drive into it. I plug it into my ibook and it doesn't register, at all. It doesn't show up on the desktop or in the disk utility. Is there anyway I can get to my files?
EDIT: I forgot to add that I plugged it into a windows computer and it noticed it but I still couldn't see it. I've tried it on other windows computers and now I'm getting nothing. The green light on the enclosure turns on and I can hear the drive working, but I can't get to it.

I just went back to look at the ebay listing and it's pretty much this one
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170293298831&trksid=e11051.m203&trkparms=algo%3DCRX%26itu%3DUCC%252BUCI%252BLM%252BLA%26otn%3D5&ssPageName=ADME: X:RTQ:US:1348
It says it's mac compatible, but then again, it was only 10 bucks.
Is there someone I can take the drive to? Maybe they can retrieve my lost files.
