Can I rename a physical Standby database without having to recreate?

Hi all,
One of my DBA's created a new standby database yesterday. He was supposed to create the standby database with a unique name from the primary system, but he didn't. So right now, DataGuard is running and replicating, and the standby has the exact same database name as primary.
I'd like to get this configured the way we had planned, to rename the standby database to something unique. I see Metalink Doc ID 15390.1, showing how to rename a database, but I'm not sure if this is possible in the standby environment? Has anyone ever done this? Anything different that needs to be accounted for, in the physical standby DB?
I'm on 10.2.0.3, on Windows 2003.
Any help/advice is appreciated!!

Dear TheBlakester,
You have to write it on the spfile and bounce the database. You should also have to change the log_archive_config parameter with the new standby db_unique_name.
From the online Oracle documentation;
For example, if the DB_UNIQUE_NAME parameter has not been defined on either database, the following SQL statements might be used to assign a unique name to each database.
Execute this SQL statement on the primary database:
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_UNIQUE_NAME='CHICAGO' SCOPE=SPFILE;
Execute this SQL statement on the standby database:
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_UNIQUE_NAME='BOSTON' SCOPE=SPFILE;
Step 4   Verify that the LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG database initialization parameter has been defined on the primary and standby database and that its value includes a DG_CONFIG list that includes the DB_UNIQUE_NAME of the primary and standby database.
For example, if the LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG parameter has not been defined on either database, the following SQL statement could be executed on each database to configure the LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG parameter:
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET
  2> LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG='DG_CONFIG=(CHICAGO,BOSTON)';After than that it is better for you to check following items just in case;
v$archived_log
v$dataguard_status

  • Can I rename an emebedded graphic file without having to re-do my designs?

    Hi folks... Once having created and published my site, is there a way to rename the names of the graphic files which have been embedded without having to first rename them, embed in layout, then publsih again?
    Eg. say my home page has two graphic files, one called 133.jpeg and the other tony.jpeg. Once I publish the site, can I use iWeb to rename the files to say wedding01.jpeg and portrait01.jpeg and have the links automatically updated and the new named files uploaded?
    Images I have used on my site are a mish mash of names, and I would like to name them to match the content of the pages they are on (eg. portraits01.jpg, weddings.jpeg, babies.jpeg). Guess I want to make the images easy for search engines to recognise as content related. Hope you can help. David

    This is exactly what I am trying to do. I've created an entire site and am now realizing that the names of the graphics should correlate better to the sections and/or site name for searching purposes. I'd love to be able to do this within iWeb so that I don't have to re-do the graphics manually.

  • Can I change a cross reference display without having to recreate it?

    WHen cross references are to figures on the same page, I let the cross reference point to the paragraph number only ("see View 25"). When it is on another page, I use paragraph number and page ("See View 25 on page 34"). But when my text changes, sometimes text moves, sometimes images move and I need to change the cross reference. It is quite bothersome, I have to rmeove the old one and create a new one, hunting for the cross reference in a list of 150 or so.
    Is there a simpler way? E.g. put the insertion point in the cross reference and than some easy way to select a different appearance?

    Thanks for stepping in, Jan. I'm glad the smart page-reference building blocks in Cross-References Pro can actually do what I hoped it could, to solve this riddle for the original poster. I did a quick test, just to be sure it worked as I expected, and it does! It would be great for Adobe to license your technology and build this into InDesign, along with the rest of the extra-strength cross-reference abilities. (Disclaimer: I'm not connected to DTP Tools other than being a happy user.)
    As to the unwanted space, perhaps a character style in nested and/or GREP style could apply some kind of width adjustment that would reduce the displacement to an absolute minimum.

    The trick is that you include the words "on" and "on the" in the page wording definitions, but insert just emptu space for the This Page setting.     Run a test by creating an extract that creates an ASCII file. It's simple, you don't need to have a replicat or data pump. If you can read the ORLs of the standby, you'll pick up the statements from the redo apply. The problem, though, is that the physical standby is mounted, so any connections/queries requiring access to fixed tables is going to fail. Also, what DBLOGIN can be used to add trandata for a table?

    I never needed or tested something like this, but below maybe usefull -
    Transient Logical Standby
    Users can convert a physical standby to a transient logical standby database to effect a rolling database upgrade, and then revert the standby to its original state as a physical standby database once the upgrade is complete - using the KEEP IDENTITY clause. This benefits physical standby users who wish to execute a rolling database upgrade without investing in redundant storage otherwise needed to create a logical standby database.

  • Bringing a Physical Standby database online without (a) tablespace(s)

    Dear all,
    Is it possible to create a kind of "dblink" in a physical standby database residing in a remote host (another host than the primary production database)? We want to make this standby DB to be online without one tablespace.
    Our database consists of 2 parts: a core part (around 55 Gb) - stored in 2 tablespaces, residing in one mounted disk - and an "attachment" part (around 550 Gb) - stored in one tablespace, residing in 2 mounted disks. The attachment part is of less importance. We would like to make a standby DB for the core part and exclude the attachment part (because of its extensive size) to be online.
    Currently we can not put this physical standby DB online, since it requires the attachment datafiles to be available.
    Would it be a problem if we NFS mount these 2 disks on the host where the standby database resides?
    The best solution would be if we can tell the standby DB that there is no need to update the attachment tablespace.

    I am trying to learn oracle dataguard and as part of the process learning creating standby database.
    Platform : Sun-Fire-V250 Sparc, Solaris 10
    Database Version - Oracle 11R2
    I am creating standby database on same server, so directory structure is different.
    Following the instructions on Oracle site I managed to create a functional physical standby database. But I am not able to create standby database using RMAN. These are the steps that I followed-
    1.Set up all necessary parameters on primary database as done while creating physical standby database manually, eg setting force logging, creating standby logs etc.
    2.Edited parameter file on primary database as done while creating manual pysical standby database creation. Some of the changes done are-

    and that the SYS password is same in the password files.

    I have intentionally given

    because I know in the current incarnaion of the database, max sequence is 78.
    So my understanding is, the rows between 28-29 June are from previous incarnation, correct me if I am wrong
    Archive files of the current incarnation, since I successfully created standby database are shipped but yet to be applied - am I right?
    Then my final question is, when will these archives be applied to standby database?

    I've a problem on standby database.
    I recently added a datafile on primary database, then I scp'ed the data file to physical standby database.On physical standby database I tried performing recovery.
    I get following message in my alert log
    WARNING! Recovering data file 88 from a fuzzy file. If not the current file
    it might be an online backup taken without entering the begin backup command.
    ORA-279 signalled during: ALTER DATABASE RECOVER standby database ...
    how can I fix this now.
    We keep physical standby database 2 day behind, and apply logs manually.
    Physical standby database is maintained manually.
    Could someone help me in getting out of this problem.

    Versus keeping it in manual mode, you can specify a time "delay" for the application of the logs:

    In some cases, you may want to create a time lag between the time when redo data is received from the primary site and when it is applied to the standby database. You can specify a time interval (in minutes) to protect against the application of corrupted or erroneous data to the standby database. When you set a DELAY interval, it does not delay the transport of the redo data to the standby database. Instead, the time lag you specify begins when the redo data is completely archived at the standby destination.
    Note:
    If you define a delay for a destination that has real-time apply enabled, the delay is ignored.
    Specifying a Time Delay
    You can set a time delay on primary and standby databases using the DELAY=minutes attribute of the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n initialization parameter to delay applying archived redo log files to the standby database. By default, there is no time delay. If you specify the DELAY attribute without specifying a value, then the default delay interval is 30 minutes.
    Canceling a Time Delay
    You can cancel a specified delay interval as follows:
    For physical standby databases, use the NODELAY keyword of the RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE clause:

    For logical standby databases, specify the following SQL statement:

    The next item I'm not sure about is after creating the control file for standby use.
    One the primary server I created it using:
    alter database create standby controlfile as 'sbcontrol01.ctl';
    I copied the primary database pfile I had created earlier to the standby server, renamed it and edited it.
    Initially I left the CONTROL_FILES= parameter pointing to the control01.ctl, control02.ctl and control03.ctl that I restored. But I was getting the error ORA-01665: control file is not a standby control file
    So I copied the sbcontrol01.ctl to sbcontrol02 and sbcontrol03.ctl and pointed the CONTROL_FILES= parameter at them.
    The error went away and the database came up. I still need to test it some more but wanted to see if what i did was correct or a fluke.

    If in the primary I had control files named control01, control02 and control03 would I have been able to create a standby controlfile called control01.ctl or would I have had to name it something else like I did (sbcontrol01.ctl) and rename it to control01.ctl once I got it over to the standby database server?Suppose you have the primary database control file in C:\oracle\primary\control location with names control01.ctl and control02.ctl. Then also you can create a standby controlfile with control01.ctl and control02.ctl , but then the location to be created must be different.You can create it in C:\oracle\primary location and then transfer to the specified location mentioed in the pfile of the standby database and mount the standby database.
    But saying this i would suggested to keep the name different from control01.ctl as far as naming conventions are followed.It might confuse someoe whether its a primary database controlfe or a standby database controlfile.Usally primary database controlfile are named control01.ctl , coltrol02.ctl etc and for standby many do prefer keeping standby01.ctl, standby02.ctl.Thats just for for understanding.

    We are useing oracale 11g enterprise edition and want to create a physical standby database on another machine:
    On primary host we've installed "standard database" and turned on archive log mode over em.
    On the standby host we've installed only oracle without a database and without a listener.
    On a third machine we've installed grid control and registered the primary and standby hosts. Using EM with Data Grid I'm attempting to create a Physical Standby on standby host. Everything is working except for the last part as noted here:

    What mean's in this case:
    "ORA-01152 file string was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
    Cause: An incomplete recovery session was started, but an insufficient number of redo logs were applied to make the database consistent. This file is still in the future of the last redo log applied. The most likely cause of this message is forgetting to restore the file from backup before doing incomplete recovery.

    but there's a problem: We don't create the standby database manually. The creation is done by data guard over grid control. And the "automatic" creation stopps at this point.
    Unfortunatly we don't know, wich steps of a manuall standby database creation are done and wich steps are not done at this point.
    The oracle documentation (for release 11g) to create a manuall standby database is "B28294-02". But there's no step 5 "alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session". Do you mean step 4 of chapter 3.2.6?
    Is there no way, to create a standby database automatically over grid control? Or do we have to do something else before creating the physical standby database? Perhaps we have to create a full backup after switching to archive log mode?

    I want to apply Oracle patchset 8 on 10.2.0.5 when physical standby database in place. What are the steps for Primary site and for standby site.

    Hi Kamran,
    You will not upgrade or patch the standby database by importing offline redologs. On the contrary, there is a procedure to do this. Please note that you will not transitiate the role from standby to primary or startup the database. You will just startup the database by executing "startup mount" and "startup upgrade", during the upgrade. It means that you will not change database role standby to primary and you will be able to continue to the log shipment after the respective upgrade.
    But, it is very important that you should stop the log shipment and apply all the offline redologs, before the upgrade. Technically, you can import offline redologs after the upgrade, by changing "compatibility" parameter in oracle, but regarding to my experiences it may cause some problems after you transitiate the role from standby to primary.
    In short;
    In order to stop log shipment, at the primary site;
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=defer;
    In order to import all the offline redologs without a delay, at the standby site;
    alter database recover managed standby database cancel;
    alter database recover managed standby database nodelay disconnect from session;
