Can I use home sharing with an external iTunes folder??

I just set up and am using home sharing for the first time. I have a MacBook Pro and iMac both set up, running iTunes and sharing will not work like I'd like. I use an external hard drive with my iMac and have an iTunes folder there (that sometimes it points to automatically, but sometimes I have to go under advanced and show the iMac to use that iTunes folder because it defaults to the internal iTunes folder on the computer). Should iTunes home sharing work with the external iTunes folder or does it only work with iTunes folders on the computer? I currently have my iTunes folder pointed to the external and can play music from there, but I cannot find a way to access that folder from my MacBook Pro.
I'm wondering if it's a limitation of home sharing or a result of not having the iTunes folder "properly set up" on the iMac to always point to the external.

I use an external hard drive with my iMac and have an iTunes folder there (that sometimes it points to automatically, but sometimes I have to go under advanced and show the iMac to use that iTunes folder because it defaults to the internal iTunes folder on the computer).
Make sure the external drive is powered on and mounted on the desktop before launching iTunes.

  • HT4557 Can I use Home Sharing with only another person's iPad but with out the other person's computer?

Would like to share music with someone.  Currently the computer registered with the iPad is out of commission.  But since you can pretty much do everything on the iPad another computer was not purchased.  How can I utilize home sharing with out two computers?

You don't.  Otherwise they would have called it Device sharing.

  • Can I use home sharing with Power Mac G5?

I am using a PowerMac G5 2.0GHz, I am currently using an AirPort Extreme card however would have no difficulty in using ethernet connection.
I was wondering if, can I run home sharing from my PowerMac to my ATV3 and iPad? If so, what operating system and iTunes version would be required?

You need to install a full retail version of OS X 10.5 Leopard, then run the software update fearure of OS X  to update  the OS X version to OS X 10.5.8 and then update iTunes to 10.6.3 to get the Home Sharing feature.
iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to work on PowerPC Macs.
    What iPad are you using?
I have an iPad3 and this feature worked the OS X 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6.3.
Not sure about the latest ATV, though.

  • HT3819 Can i use home sharing with my Fiancee? is this considered as "personal use"

My Fiancee does not have a credit card yet so she cant create an apple id to redeem a gift i sent her by itunes, so a solution i thought of was to enable home sharing on her PC so i can share with her the album that i want her to listen to.
Is this considered legal?  Please consider that i already paid for the album, which she cant listen to right now due to the credit card restriction when creating an Apple ID

Not unless you are on the same wifi network

  • HT3819 can you use home sharing with other computers

i got a new laptop, but my old one has all my songs, and i sync my ipod to that one. I tried home sharing so everty time i download on one laptop, it goes to the other but it is not working.

While it is possible, I have yet to see anyone in these forums report it working successfully.  Simply copy the ENTIRE C:\Users\<user>\Music folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • How do I use home sharing with the new iTunes to put a movie on my iPad

My husband and I each have separate iTunes accounts since we both have iPhones. However we share an apple TV and an iPad, both of which are usually under my account. It used to be that since we had home sharing activated that we could have movies that he purchased with his account on the iPad along with the movies that I purchased with my account. However when we updated to the new iTunes I could not put movies that he purchased with his account (he had a gift card so we used his account instead of mine) onto the iPad. So now we have a movie for our kids that they can only watch on his phone. I want to know what the trick is to "sharing" the movie between our accounts/devices mainly the iPad and Apple TV so that I don't have to wipe the iPad and change accounts on it just for my kids to watch a movie.

  • How do i use home sharing with the new itunes 11?

    Morning Saintine,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Home Sharing enables you to stream or transfer music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more among up to five authorized computers in your household. To do so, you will need to Turn on Home Sharing on each computer using the same Apple ID.

    Hi ashleymartinsmith!
I have an article for you that may help you understand Home Sharing a little better:
    Understanding Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819
Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household. You can also use Home Sharing to play your iTunes content on your iOS devices and Apple TV (2nd generation) if they are connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
The important thing to note here is that all connected devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network for Home Sharing to be functional. Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • How can I use home sharing between our iphones (create playlists from both accounts at once)

How can I use home sharing between our iphones, so that we can create playlists with songs from both of our libraries?  We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account.  Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?
Does it have to be created within iTunes first on our Mac?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"
