Can putting your fans on 6000 RPM cause damage?

Whenever I play world of warcraft on my macbook pro retina gets pretty hot ,but when I put the fans on 6000 RPM it stays pretty cool so I was wondering if putting the fans on those setting can damage my computer/fans?

Only to wear out the fan motor faster than it would left to run at its normal speed depending on the heat generated.

I'm getting a new iphone and I want to put a screen protrector on it, but I'm terrible at putting them on so do they have proffesionals at the apple store who can put your screen protector on for you?

Don't know about Apple Stores, but if you have a Best Buy store near you, they will put it on you for a price.

  • Can resetting the SMC on MacBook Pro cause damage to the laptop?

I've reset the SMC on my new MacBook Pro, and are curious as to whether or not doing so is capable of causing damage to the computer and its hardware.

Apple would not publish instructions to do so (or without a warning anyway) if an SMC reset could cause damage.

  • BOTH fans at 6000 rpm?????

How on earth can I control these??? There is NOTHING causing the CPU to act above 2%, but they seem to be in failsafe mode... help!! if it's a thermal sensor, where is this located and how can i test??

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. If you have a faulty sensor, you'll get an error code with "SNS" in it.
When in Activity Monitor, you do have "All Processes" selected at the top? Not just "My Processes"?
Also, check with iStatPro to make sure you do not have some component getting excessively hot and triggering all this fan activity.
I agree with resetting the SMC:

That cured some overactive fans on my MBP.
    Good luck!

  • CPU fan speed - is 6000 rpm at 41C normal?

I have asked about this before - haven't found a solution yet - -- just want to know how fast a bog-standard retail fan for the 3800+ should be going ...mine hit about 6200 rpm a short while ago when the CPU temp was 41 C, and sounded (as someone else describes it "like a Dyson") ... it is now at 36 C and has just dropped below 5000 rpm ... I can hear myself think now ... I have Speedfan but haven't a clue as how to get it to "control" the fan speed - 6000 rpm seems somewhat high for 41 C!!
If I would be better using a different CPU cooling solution ... what "fan" would anyone recommend? ... with a price limit of around £20 ....
    JLP

Keep in mind that each CPU will operate at different temps depending on which core you have, the Ambient temp and the case temp as well as what your using as cooling and what case fans you have. Just because one person gets a good temp does not mean you will get the same.
For instance a computer in a hot room will end up with ahigher temp than one in an airconditiooned room. A Computer with dual 120mm case fans can usually be cooler than one with 2 80mm fans and so on.
Also note that it can depend on how you use your computer as the heavier the loads the more heat will build. Bigger Vid cards in the system will produce more heat than a small and cool vid card. So it stands to reason that the componants also play a part.
Cool and Quiet will also be a factor as it is meant to keep the CPU slow and cool when there is only small loads on the system.

  • I wonder if Apple will ever make it where you can play your pc games on your ipad

I wish apple would on their next update, make it where you can put your pc games on your ipad and play them without having to be online.

Doubtful. PC games use a different operating system so they're not compatible. Your game manufacturers would h ave to make app versions of their games, so the burden is on them to be compatible with Apple, not for Apple to alter their OS to work with games.

  • Macbook Pro fans stuck at 6000 RPM

    Hello,
I am using a 2006 MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with a 500GB HDD that has 450 GB free.
About a month ago the left and right fan started cranking up to 6000 RPM (which is apparently max for this model) upon startup. Most discussions I've read while looking for a solution suggest resetting the SMC, which I have tried a few times to no avail. CPU and RAM usage are normal, nothing taking up tons of processing power on activity monitor and temps are around 35-40 degrees Celsius. I saw a few boards talk about a stuck print job which I checked for as well, but there was nothing. I tried downloading and using the smcFan Control app and setting the preferred fan speed to as low as possible but the app still registers speed at 6000 RPM and they have not slowed down.
Unfortunately, I bought this MBP from a used dealer (had it for a few months before this started), so I do not have the original OS disks to perform a hardware diagnostic. It came with 10.5 on it but I have since upgraded to 10.6.8
I'm not experiencing any problems with operation but the fans at this speed are extremely loud and annoying; is there anything further I can do to try to fix this? I'm a bit new to macs, is there a program that gives you more powerful fan control than the one I downloaded? How much would something like this cost to get fixed by Apple? Thank you in advance for any advice.

You likely have blocked vents inside or a hardware issue, like a failed sensors to trigger the fans at default max warp speed.
If your adapt at opening it up, you might want to take a look at these videos and get yourself a can of air spray + tube and blast out the obstructions out from the inside.

  • Fan speed always 6000 rpm

    Hi!
I got early 2008 MBP , and both fan speed is around 6000 rpm. They work such way all time.  GPU temp in fan control is 0 , other temp is ok. In program (Temperature monitor) i can see a temp of Graphic Processor Temperature Diod, is it a temp of gpu? I try to run hardware test, but i haven't got install DVD and holding D when starts doesn't help.

If your GPU temperature is 0, that suggests a problem.  It may be that the fan controls have set to a default level and thus the 6000 rpm fan speeds.  I think that you will have to take it to a repair facility for evaluation and repair.
    Ciao.

  • Fan buzzing noise at 6000 rpm.. Sound worst when tilted on any axis...

My macbook been overheated since the Snow Leopard upgrade but what really anoy me the most is that the fan make a buzzing sound over 6000 rpm and when I pick up the MBA is tilt in any axis it make a noise like a fly is right next to your ear and it also feel like the fan is loose or somthing. Is that fan sound normal for those who got a macbook pro. Try tilting the laptop a little and does it make a weird sound? I keep thinking is a defective fan or something is loose that relate to the fan.
Does this happen with your guys macbook air? Is this normale of should I bring it in and see if I can get my fan replace.
I can barely hear it at 2000 rpm but at 6000 is really anoying to work with the computer for me...

I would get it check out. It might be the blase hitting or a motor bearing.

  • Minimum RPM of fan can't be set below 5200 RPM

When I power on my MacBook Pro, the fan immediately starts to run at 5700 RPM. No significant cpu load (2-4%). PRAM and SMC resets have been performed several times without effect. I use the app "Mac Fan Control" to monitor and control the fan. Somehow the minimum RPM that can be set for the fan is 5200 RPM, which is rediculously high.
The screenshot shows I have set the RPM to a constant value of 5200. The problem is that I cannot select a lower value. Also sensor-based or system managed ways of fan management do not lead to lower RPM
My question: Who can explain how I can (re)set the minimum RPM for the fan back to 2000 RPM?

    Thanks guys.
    To clearify my original message:
    1. First the fan started to behave weird. Only then I installed fan control apps. I am not trying to outsmart engineers. No intention to overrule Mac standard settings.
    2. The fan is not only running at 5700 RPM at startup, but from startup until shutdowns. Continiously.
    3. After your comments, I uninstalled the fan control apps, rebooted (even reset SMC again). No results :-(

  • Put your NB Fan (lightshow included) back!

There are a lot of people who took out their NB Fans because they got better temps without it, using speedfan, for example, to monitor the temperature.
The problem is, it has been confirmed, there is NOT a temperature diode at the NB. The NB temperature that you see in speedfan is bogus. Now, how do you know what the REAL temperature is?. Perhaps your NB is overheating and you DO NOT KNOW IT.
Just what I think, but until no more testings are done with temperature probes, I suggest you people put your NB fan back, just in case.

So quantification isn't quantification if the raw numerical data sin't presented?  I guess I need to pass that along to the thousands of journal article authors who publish data interpreted graphically or otherwise.
Hate to be blunt, but I presumed that I had described my experimental design well enough for some of you to realize that the raw data itself is completely irrelevant,  as it is useless as a reference for anybody unless you are using 1) my particular heatsink, 2) my particular junction (not just the thermal compound, but how it was spread and 'squished'), and 3) my particular thermal probe.  Remember, this was not a measurement of core temp but rather the surface temperature of the NB heatsink.  The major assumption that was noted was that the surface temperature of the NB heatsink should be proportional to the NB core temp, which is both reasonable and necessary to facilitate any conclusion.  However, understand that raw data is useless for comparison unless I describe exactly where on the heatsink you need to take these readings from and how you need to make contact with the NB heatsink with the probe.  Such constants are easy to maintain by a researcher in the course of an experiment, but I'm not that fanatical as to write a paper detailing it.  I'm bored but not that bored.
I ask all of you to trust me when I say that I know a thing or two about experimental design and interpretation.  None of this is intended as a lecture, but more as a provocation to scientific thinking.
All that said, the raw data is easy enough to post:
    No fan, stock heatsink = 40 C
    Stock fan, stock heatsink = 38 C
Stock fan mounted at 45 degree angle, stock heatsink = 36 C
All data was collected during repeated runs of Sandra Burn-In: Memory Bandwidth.
The precision of my instrument is limited to whole degrees, as it is designed for measuring tire compound temperatures.
Note that these are NOT core temps, but rather heatsink surface temperatures measured at a point shielded from direct airflow should a fan be mounted (the same point is used in all three instances).  Again, these should be proportional to NB core temps.  They might be comparable across systems if measurements were made with the same equipment and protocol.  The raw data was omitted in the original post because I foresaw that some people might dig that post up some time from now and miss the point that they are only truly valid as relative values, and not absolute values that can be compared across systems.  In my experience people are dumb and/or intellectually unscrupulous, and they will misinterpret you if you give them the opportunity to do so.  So I give them only what is necessary and nothing else to work with.

  • HELP ME !!!! My MBP fans are stuck on 6000 rpm

I recently cleaned the right fan on mbp because it was making a grinding noise . I then ran smc fan control to make sure that my fans were running well , now everytime i switch on my mbp the fans rev up to 6000 rpm and stay even if no programs are open. My temps are averaging around 35 celcious . I have tried everything , smc reset , pram reset , osx complete reinstalation and also tried to do a firmware restoration . None of these things have worked . Please help me

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware test? I'm wondering if a thermal sensor may have become dislodged or unplugged, as that would also cause the fans to run all out.
Also, have you checked in Activity Monitor to be sure you don't have some hung up process hogging the CPU and causing the fans to run all out? Be sure to select "CPU" on the bottom bar and "All Processes" on the top.
    Good luck!

  • Will fans running at 6000 rpm hurt my macbook pro?

Whenever I run certain programs the fans will run at 6000 rpm after 20 mins or so.  The actual temp of the computer will reach 80C max but the fans seem to be working very hard. Will this harm my computer?

Yes and no. The fans are spinning at that speed to try and keep the system cool. That is normal. But the excess heat being built up from that program will cause parts to ware faster than less heat.
Will it cause the system to fail sooner than later? Maybe then maybe not. Each computer is different, even of the same exact model. Some last a long time, other don't no matter how they are ran or treated.

  • Fans going at 6000 rpm with little cpu usage--computer too hot?

    Hi,
I am not sure what normal temperatures are for my computer, but often the fans are running at 6000 rpm when the computer doesn't have all that much going on. When I am trying do anything actually demanding, the fans are running non-stop. I've also noticed that things have just been running rather slowly, with lags in mouseclicks and typing. I am not sure if these are related, or why the computer might be working so hard to complete simple tasks. Here is a picture of iStatPro showing what's going on--CPU is 95% idle and the fans are at 6000 rpm. Does anyone know if the temperatures shown are normal or what I can do to improve the situation?
    Thanks!
