Can't assign keyword to my raw (.nef) files in Bridge cs4

I have no problems assigning the keywords on my list onto my .jpg files (by selecting the file, and then check the box on the left of any keyword on the keyword list), but when I try to do the same to my .nef (raw) files, the message "The file "xxx.nef" cannot store xmp metadata. No changes will occur." comes up, and won't let me add the keywords.
I believe that metadata (including keywords) for this type of files in Bridge is stored in sidecar xmp files in order not to alter anything in the original file, but if that is the case, is there a way that I can add keywords/ metadata into the sidecar xmp files in Bridge?
Thanks in advance!

As a Canon user I have no experience with NEF files but also can't recall problems with not writing metadata to it in Bridge.
Can you provide more details on how you handle these files. Are they not locked, and not stored on read only storage? or are they just plain NEF files imported from your CF card to the computer?
Have you also tried to convert the NEF to DNG files using the free Adobe DNG Converter?
Metadata is stored in the XMP data inside the file itself and should also stay there after converting to other file formats like tiff or jpg. The data for changes made in ACR are stored in a sidecar XMP file if you have set the preferences for it in Bridge.

  • Cannot open Nikon D5200 RAW (NEF) Files in Bridge CS5.

How do I sort this problem? Is there a bridge CS5 update for this camera? (I can't find one in Adobe Downloads)
    Dmecy

The D5200 was first supported in Camera Raw 7.3 (current version is 8.1)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
which was first supported in Bridge CS6
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Camera Raw 7.x is not compatible with CS5 or lower versions. Only CS6+
    Your options:
Join the Adobe Cloud and get the latest versions of the software
Upgrade to CS6 (perpetual license) which is still on sale but is now abandonware since the all-new Cloud-only CC versions of Adobe software will be released on June 17. CS6 will remain on sale but won't be patched or updated other than the occasional bugfix.
Convert the D5200 Raw files to DNGs using the free DNG converter then open and edit the DNGs in CS5

You need Adobe camera raw version 8.7. Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. ACR 8.7 is only compatible with PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • I can't read Nikon D5200 Raw NEF files with CS6 under Windows 8.1?

I bought a new PC so I could use Photoshop CS6 more efficiently.  However, after I installed CS6, I can't read Nikon D5200 Raw NEF files under Windows 8.1.  I've tried updating CS6, but nothing seems to work.

First, I hadto load the most recent version of  the Adobe Application Manager.  Then I could see all of the CS6 Updates including the most recent Camera Raw update.
I had to run one update at a time for it to work correctly.
But now I'm cooking with gas.
    Thanks for your help.

  • No longer able to view NEF files in Bridge or edit in Camera Raw 4.6

I have found similar questions in various Adobe forums, but I have not located a solution to my problem.
    Bridge CS3
    Photoshop CS3 Extended
    XP
    Camera Raw version 4.6.0.30
    Nikon D300s
Up until 2 weeks ago I have been copying my NEF files from my CF card via reader, opening Bridge, selecting thumbnail of NEF and opening it in Photoshop CS3. At which point I can process with Camera Raw 4.6.
Now, once new NEF files copied and Bridge opened, I only see NEF icons. When I double click the file, Photoshop opens and a box appears with the following text: Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.
Upon inspecting the differences between NEF files that I can edit and the new NEF files that I cannot, I notice in the metadata file properties that the application of the successful files is ver. 2.00 and the duds is ver. 1.00.
What "application" is the metadata referring to? I think this may be a Nikon setting, but it would help me understand the problem better if I knew what "application" this is.
I can convert the new NEF files into jpgs using Adobe DNG Converter, but this GREATLY complicates a previously straightforward work flow process.
Thank you for any light that may be shed on vexing dilemma,
    Kate

Very grateful for your response and time.
The Application I am talking about can be found when you open up a NEF file in Bridge and look at the Metadata tab on the right. Within that is the File Properties tab and the Application Ver. is the 3rd item from the top (after Filename and Document Type).
Yes, I do have only the one ACR file (Camera Raw.8bi.) in the program file/COMMON FILE/Adobe/plug ins/cs3/file formats.
I have also realized (brilliantly late in the game) that it is only the NEF files shot from my new D300s that do not work. No problem with the NEF files shot with my D100. So this leads me to conclude that my Bridge/Photoshop CS3 does not support the Camera Raw 5 that seems to be required for the D300s. Argh.
By upgrading my camera equipment, I have outmoded my requisite software.
I must say, that the recent post advisory on the forum site ("Raw files appear as icons") was supremely timely. While this does not solve my problem, it did help me understand the compatibility issues with the D300s and CS3. I have learned the following: D300s are supported by Camera Raw 5.5 which does not work with CS3. Is this correct?
    Dazed, but not beaten down,

  • How to Install Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera

I need someone to walk me through how to install a Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera.
I haven't used photoshop in ages and I got a new camera. I have been on the phone with Adobe (no help) and spent a couple of hours online trying to figure this out. I'm confused, frustrated and about to throw my computer out the window.
Also, I placed this in the "Photoshop for Beginners" since Photoshop CS5 doesn't appear anymore. I know CS5 is outdated but I spent hundreds of dollars on this program and you would think adobe would still honor its product.
    Any guidance is much appreciated.
    AJ

Odds are cs5 is too old. If you do a search on my the main Adobe website there is a list of compatible cameras for the last known update to camera raw for cs5.
Each version of Photoshop only gets so many updates for camera raw then it is necessary to upgrade Photoshop to get the next update for camera raw.
So you currently have 4 choices.
    1 upgrade Photoshop
2 get Lightroom - latest version
3 get Photoshop elements -latest version
4 get dng converter - this will download the latest version an is the only option that is free.
The dng converter can be found by searching Adobe website.

  • Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?

I was under the impression that original raw files were the biggest possible. I appear to be very wrong. Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?
I'm beginning to think that saving them as psd is a bad idea.
Yes, though I've heard all the arguments of keepng the original raw files (For ex. Did you throw away the negatives when you were using film) I se eno purpose in keeping them. Once I've made the initial adjustments--cropping, color correction etc. I don't feel a need to ever go back and never do. Most of my work is done in Photoshop and I like it that way--but suddenly finding myself with such huge files doesn't appeal to me at all--and other formats like tif...well never mind for now.

Good point made c.pfaffenbichler however, my thinking is this--there is time spent on the raw file and then there is much more time spent on (usually a psd) the file once in Photoshop. For me to then go back to the orignal raw file, after having worked on it on PS would mean getting rid of all the work (larger amount of work, time wise and artistic wise) done on PS which seems pointless. Although the psd file does show your layers and stuff it only shows the end results of that layer. It does not show from where to where you pointed your brush, from what point to what point you changed the color or part of an image etc. etc.Anyhow I understand why most people keep their raw files, but this is the main reason why I do not. It would mean hours of work on an image you already worked on (and usually were satisfied with) to perhaps make some minor alteration. Also please note that though I was noce a pro photog, no I do it mostly for fun. Getting the exact red in my Coca Cola can has never been of importance. On the other hand, if there were a way of working on a raw file within Photoshop and keep it (save it as) a raw file equivalent, then I would absolutely do so.

  • Raw (NEF) files from Nikon D7100 - Work on Elements 10

Has a update or patch been made for using raw (NEF) files from Nikon's D7100 camera?

Photoshop Elements 10 does support Adobe Camera Raw 6.4.1 to 6.7 and minimum requirement for Nikon D7100 is ACR 7.4.

  • How do I open a raw NEF file in Photoshop cs6? [was: Raw Files]

How do I open a raw NEF file in photoshop cs6?

Browse to the folder in Bridge, then right-click Open in Camera Raw, then in ACR, Open.
Or if you’re already in Photoshop: File or Photoshop if on a Mac / Open / browse to the file / Open.
If you get an error that the format is not supported then either the camera is too new or you’ve used an obsolete version of Nikon products like Transfer or ViewNX to copy or view the NEFs and they are corrupted.
Help / Updates is how you get the latest version of the Camera Raw plug-in.
You can use a utility from here to fix the corruption:

  • Importing Nikon RAW .nef files into iPhoto

I am using iPhoto 8.0.3. I can import RAW .nef files from my D90 without a problem. I also scan my older slides/negs using a CoolScan V and saving those files as RAW .nef format. Problem is that iPhoto does not recognize the .nef files that are scanned. Anybody have some thoughts? I can convert the scanned files into jpg using Nikon View and then bring them in to iPhoto, but would prefer to leave them in the RAW format so I don't have replicant files all over the place.

iPhoto will only work with RAW files on this list

Unfortunately there are no Scanners on the list.

  • Had my Nikon D600 recently in for the updated service call. Camera works fine but Photoshop says it cannot open my RAW (NEF) files now? It worked fine before and I have done all my updates.

The only thing I can think of is if you got a replacement D610 as rumored here:
    http://nikonrumors.com/2014/01/27/nikon-is-replacing-some-d600-cameras-with-new-d610-model s.aspx/
In that case, you would need the new version of Camera RAW or DNG converter as per Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras .
The other thing to check is if the files open in the Nikon native ViewNX software. If they don't it's time to call the service center.

  • Does PSE 12 download and edit raw NEF files

I have a new Nikon D7100 and PSE 10.  PSE 10 does not support Raw NEF files from this camera.  Does PSE 12 download and edit Raw files from the D 7100?

Someone will probably answer this before I finish typing.
Your issue is less with PSE than ACR or Adobe Camera Raw.  ACR works a little like a conversion engine to get RAW photos from all the various camera models to Adobe's photo programs.   Adobe updates it for recent models every few months.  They don't make it backwardly useful to Elements software.
So, you get two choices.  You can upgrade PSE that works with the current ACR modules.  If you don't want to learn the new interface and tools in PSE 12, you can use the free and downloadable "Adobe DNG Converter" that also is kept up for new camera models.  It will batch process you camera files to a more universal RAW format that is useful in the software you have.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.
