Can't back up VMs in 2012 Cluster 0x80042301

I have a 2012 Cluster with a CSV. I have the Dell Equallogic HIT v 4.5 installed on both nodes, as well as the SCDPM 2012 SP1 Agent. When I add a replica to DPM to back up one (or any) of the virtual machines on the cluster the vss writer for Hyper-V is
put in a bad state and DPM gives me the following error:
The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:A function call was made when the object was in an incorrect state
for that function
 (0x80042301))
The following VSS errors are logged in the Eventlog of the Cluster Node:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface.  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Things I have done:
Remove DPM SP1 Agent and reinstall on both nodes in cluster
Remove SCVMM SP1 Agent and reinsall on both nodes in cluster
Remove HIT and reinstall on both nodes in cluster
Restart DPM server
Restart both nodes in cluster
Before the DPM agent puts the Hyper-V VSS Writer into a bad state I can create SmartCopies from the HIT Auto-Snapshot Monitor software, but as soon as the VSS Writer is in a bad state ASM no longer works:

I also have two more 2-node 2012 Clusters that have the exact same software installed, but
do not exhibit this issue.
Thanks!

I have removed the hardware provider and still no luck. You are correct that the Hyper-V Vss writer seems to be the culprit. Here is my output from vssadmin list wrtiers:

  • Guide to migrating a HV 2012 cluster managed by VMM to HV 2012 R2 + VMM R2

    Hello everyone,
I have a task on hand and even after searching the ‘net for quite some time, I have not come across a solution listed on one page. I hope this thread becomes a “Guide to migrating a Hyper-V 2012 cluster managed by VMM 2012 to Hyper-V 2012 R2 + VMM 2012
    R2”.
My searches did find these useful threads but they do not have all the information I need:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/eb824c20-9632-4ec9-9a71-2d1717e44a81/migrate-from-2012-to-2012-r2-cluster-with-vmm-2012-r2?forum=virtualmachinemgrclustering

So let me start by listing what I have right now:
    I have a 4 node cluster running Hyper-V 2012 SP1 (the free, core edition).
It is currently being managed with SC VMM 2012 SP1.
99% of the VMs are running on CSVs cut off a Fiber Channel SAN. I have some VMs on local drives and they are not HA.
Everything is in production. I have around 90 VMs total.
I do have capacity to take up to two HV hosts out of the cluster and still survive just fine.
I also have two other spare servers which have no OS on them.
    What I don’t have:
I do not have SCOM or DPM or any other SC component.
Well, I used to have SCOM 2012 but I uninstalled it and removed it. Long story, don’t ask! I do plan to install SCOM 2012 R2 at some point soon.
Here is what I want to do:
Upgrade both the cluster and VMM to 2012 R2 version.
This time, I want to use Server 2012 Datacenter edition (with GUI).
I plan to join the spare servers to the 2012 R2 cluster.
Here is what I have learnt up until now (and correct me if I am wrong):
The steps I need to take to accomplish all this are:
Upgrade VMM 2012 to VMM 2012 R2 version
Eject at least one host from the cluster
Install Server 2012 R2 on that server.
Configure a one server (or more, if possible) cluster running 2012 R2
Give that server the same old CSVs
Use the “Copy cluster roles Wizard” to copy VMs from old cluster to new cluster. However this will incur downtime.
I have not started doing all this because I am not 100% sure on some things.
Here is the list of my questions:
    1. About step #1: Upgrade VMM to VMM R2 version
Is there any reliable / official guide out there for this? I have seen these on the net:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn469607.aspx
    http://www.systemcentercentral.com/migrating-from-vmm-2012-sp1-to-vmm-2012-r2-step-by-step-upgrading-to-2012-r2-series/
The problem I see is that none of them talk about upgrading a clustered scenario. Do I assume that the steps of upgrading VMM 2012 to 2012 R2 are the same with or without a cluster?
On the server I eject from the cluster, do I upgrade the OS or do a fresh install? I prefer doing a fresh install.
    2. Is there a way of doing all this with no downtime?
I am worried about needing downtime for the last step “copy roles…”. I wish there was a way of migrating the roles (VMs) without any downtime.
    3. Anything I need to worry about?
I wonder if I need to be careful about granting access to the CSVs to the new R2 Cluster. Will that cause any problem?
Any inputs on this topic are highly appreciated! I promise to update the first post so that it becomes a guide as I get corrections and inputs from everyone :-)
    Thanks!

Time to tackle the actual Hyper-V Cluster migration:
So by this time, I have two nodes in the old Hyper-V 2012 cluster managed by SC VMM 2012 R2. I wiped out the OS on the other 2 nodes and installed Windows 2012
Datacenter on them. This time I am not installing the Core edition for Hyper-V. After working with Core for a year or so, I feel Core gives way too much trouble for very little gain.
Now I plan to follow a technet document which describes how to
migrate virtual machines from a Hyper-V cluster using Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV). Although this document does not describe VMM I think VMM should be able to use those migrated VMs. Here is this migration strategy in a nutshell:
    Create a new cluster using 2012 R2
Present the existing CSVs to the new cluster.
Leave the disk offline on the new cluster.
Use the copy cluster roles wizard in Failover Cluster Manager to copy VMs from old cluster to new cluster.
Virtual machines are created on the new cluster but are not turned on.
Turn off the virtual machines and take the disk offline on the old cluster and then on the new cluster you need to enable the disk and start the virtual machines.
Hmmm…sounds pretty involved to me. Well let’s get on with it. First things first…in order to use this migration strategy we need to create a new cluster.
Here are the steps I took to create a new cluster:
Install 2 Windows 2012 R2 on the same 2 servers I ejected from the old cluster.
Correct drive letters of local hard disk drives and optical drives, if needed.
    Update them.
Setup networking. Take care of main network, heartbeat for cluster and iSCSI networks (if applicable). Here are some best practices:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2014/02/20/configuring-windows-failover-cluster-networks.aspx
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2011/06/17/10176338.aspx
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/9711.hyper-v-network-design-configuration-and-prioritization-guidance.aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn550728.aspx
Make sure your bindings order is correct. I had to correct mine because by default, the heartbeat network was at the top!
I also followed this checklist of Hyper-v’s best practices.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/03/10/windows-server-2012-hyper-v-best-practices-in-easy-checklist-form.aspx
Much of the stuff in there is very relevant.
Add the domain account used for host management and the SCVMM service account to the local admin group on the 2 new servers.
Use SC VMM manager to install Hyper-V role on the two new servers. VMM can do that as a part of the “Add Host process”.
In VMM, right click on “All Hosts” and click on “Add Hyper-V hosts and clusters”. Go through the wizard and add the two new servers.
When I did this, it failed. I got three errors, Error 10441, Warning 10444 and warning 26179.
I logged into one of the new servers locally and from Server Manager >> Dashboard >> Add roles and features.
On the “create virtual switch page, I selected the NIC connected to the main company network (as this time I have only one NIC for the company network, you should have at least two).
Unfortunately, even this time I get an error: Access is denied: 0x800700005
This is very strange because I am already logged on as an admin here.
Now I started checking for windows updates. I remembered that the checklist above also has a set of recommended updates. There was a huge 890MB), cumulative update available KB2919355. I installed and restarted after that.
I also installed the feature “Multipath I/O” since I was getting the “warning 26179”.
After this installation, I ran windows update again. No available updates.
Now I went back to VMM. I really want to enable the Hyper-V role using VMM. So I repeated step # 8. Interestingly, this time I did not get any error. VMM rebooted the host automatically. Yay!
Now I repeated steps 14 to 16 on the second server. Worked fine!
At this point we are ready to create a new cluster using the two nodes. I followed this document:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg610576.aspx
At this point I ran into a problem. I talked about it on my thread: When I try to create a new HV cluster using the "Create HV Cluster" wizard in VMM, it comes to a screen titled "Storage" where it shows all the existing LUNs as disks and
it says "select the discs you want to cluster". That is all good but at the bottom it says "Any data on the disks will be overwritten”. Of course I want to keep my data intact so I can use the copy cluster roles wizard later on! How can I create a new cluster
which uses the same disks as the old cluster WITHOUT wiping out the disks?
Ok so I did not get an answer on the forum, so I decided NOT to take a risk and do a quick test. Here is what I did: I masked/unexported all CSVs. Then I created a test CSV, put some data on it and proceeded to create a cluster using that
    CSV and a quorum/witness disk.
This time on the storage page, For the test volume I checked the checkbox under CSV. I left the format boxes unchecked << THIS IS WRONG read below for updates
The attempt failed. Somehow the test CSV got configured as a local disk on host #1, it was showing up as NTFS instead of CSVFS. The VMM cluster creation process stopped. I found out that both the CSV and the quorum disk were online on the
node #1. I made them offline.
Retried , got the same error as last time : Mounts storage disk on (servername).
FINALLY I realized that step # 21 bove is WRONG! You need to select “Do not format” under the file system column. This will leave the CSV untouched.
Unfortunately, even this did not work. So I just took away ALL CSVs and tried to recreate the Cluster. It STILL did not work! LOL! The error is 25303
I corrected the permissions as this:
ON the HV hosts, inside local administrators group add VMM service account, Host admin account and VMM server’s computer account
Inside “Virtual Machine Manager Servers” group add VMM server’s computer account
Unfortunately, it still did not work! The error is 25303 (same). I looked everywhere including all the logs (system and security) nothing there. I searched on the net but never found a solution. Eventually I accepted defeat and tried to
create a cluster from outside VMM…using “Failover cluster manager”
Even then I got an error! It seems to me that it failed on creating the computer name of the cluster in AD.
I tried it again with a different computer name in AD…something which had never been created earlier (I had mistakenly created a computer name for the cluster and then deleted it). This time it worked! However I got an error that the witness
disk was not created because it does not have an acceptable file system. Hmmmm.,….I had not formatted the witness disk since I thought the cluster wizard will do it. I created a Witness disk later, manually.)
Interestingly, when I opened VMM again, I see the cluster in there and I am able to manage the cluster from within VMM…interesting!

  • VMs on Failover Cluster hanging in "Locked" state

I'm managing a Windows Server 2012 R2 2-node cluster that is backed up using a separate DPM 2012 R2 server. All VMs are on Cluster Shared Storage.
I've noticed that some VMs keep hanging in a "Running (Locked)" state (in FOCM, in HVM it shows a "Backing up..." state). Things I noticed while the VMs are in this state are:
every subsequent DPM backup will fail (it looks like DPM is the cause of this "Locked" state)
the VM can't be moved to another node
if the VM is backed up "Online", I can see AVHD files -- the VHD files have the date of the last succesful DPM backup
if the VM is backed up "Offline", I can't find any snapshots (the VHD files have the date of the last succesful DPM backup, which is weird, since the data in the VM is actually changing)
The only way out of this situation is to shut down the VMs and reboot both cluster nodes. Of course, this isn't something that I like to do on a weekly basis.
    My questions:
    - What can I do to prevent this "Locked" problem? (the last 2 months I've experienced this problem with 5 different VMs)
    - Is there another way to get out of the "Locked" situation? Preferably one that doesn't require a cluster reboot.
    - Are there any logs I can check to get more information about this problem?
    Thanks in advance!

I don't have a couple of those hotfixes. Mainly because the hotfix page states that I only should install it if I experience the problems mentioned -- which isn't always the case.
I have a service interval coming up and will install the relevant patches. I'll report back when I have new information.
    Thanks so far!

  • Backups - Transactional Logs - 2012 Cluster Always On

    Hi,
We have a SQL 2012 cluster that we can successfully perform a full backup of databases however we cannot seem to perform transactional logs backups. The databases are in FULL mode yet no success when using a maintenance plan.
    any ideas?
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
There are some known issues with using the maintenance plans on Availability Groups such as the ones defined below.
Maintenance Plan Does not Backup Database or Log of Database Defined in Availability Group
Database Backup Maintenance Plan Fails on backup verify when running on
    an Availability Group primary replica
To implement effective backups on Availability Group, you can customize you own stored procedure to backup the database and create SQL Server agent jobs on each replica. For more details, please review this blog:

  • What is the best format to use on an external hard drive so I can both back up my Macbook Pro and also put movies on it from another hard drive (PC)?

I am looking for a solution to whether if it is best to get two hard drives or one that can do two things that I want.
I am looking for a hard drive format that can both back up my 500GB Macbook Pro but I was also wondering if I could also put movies on it from another hard drive that is PC based. Would partitioning the hard drive work for this? I don't know what are the best formats to use.
If this is too hard it might just be easier having a separate 500GB hard drive for back up of my Mac and another bigger hard drive for the movies etc (the files are probably bigger than 4GB). Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to make a decision soon!

    Csound1 wrote:
Microsoft has not released the official exFAT file system specification, and a restrictive license from Microsoft is required in order to make and distribute exFAT implementations. Microsoft also asserts patents on exFAT which make it impossible to re-implement its functionality in a compatible way without violating a large percentage of them.[13] This renders the implementation, distribution, and use of exFAT as a part of free or open-source operating systems or of commercial software, for which the vendors could not obtain a license from Microsoft, not only technically difficult, but legally impossible in countries that recognize United States software patents.
Can't help with that, if one is using a Windows machine then they are subjected to their rules and control.
Limited support outside Windows and Mac OS X operating systems as of 2012, when most consumer electronic devices could only handleFAT12/FAT16/FAT32, rendering exFAT (and flash memory formats using it) impractical as a universal exchange format.
The OP said they plan to store movies on the external drive.
Many movies today are well over 4GB in size, thus exFAT has to be used and formatted on the PC, which the Mac can then read.
Older Windows NT versions up to Windows Vista without Service Pack 1 do not support exFAT.
Irrelevant, Microsoft provides a free download of exFAT for Windows XP, and Vista shouldn't be running on pre SP1 anyway.
Some distributions of Linux have begun to include support for exFAT. It is however, only available as a file system in user space, as it's not supported by the kernel.
Irrelevant, OP is using Windows and OS X, not Linux and if they did Linux can read the files at least and transfer, which is all they care about really.
Windows Vista is unable to use exFAT drives for ReadyBoost. Windows 7 removes this limitation, enabling ReadyBoost caches larger than 4 GiB.[14]
Irrelevant, the OP's is intending to use it as transfer drive between Mac's and Windows for movies.
The standard exFAT implementation only uses a single file allocation table and free space map. FAT file systems instead used alternating tables, as this allowed recovery of the file system if the media was ejected during a write (which occurs frequently in practice with removable media). The optional TexFAT component adds support for additional backup tables and maps, but may not be supported.
Some relevancy, but only exFAT can handle 4GB+ files between Mac's and PC's, so the need outweighs the possible problem.
The OP needs to follow the standard Windows practice of "safely removing hardware" before physically disconnecting the external drive. If a write is occurring, it won't allow disconnecting until the write is finished.
Support for up to 2,796,202 files per subdirectory only.[1][nb 3] Microsoft documents a limit of 65,534 files per sub-directory for their FAT32 implementation, but other operating systems have no special limit for the number of files in a FAT32 directory. FAT32 implementations in other operating systems allow an unlimited number of files up to the number of available clusters (that is, up to 268,304,373 files on volumes without long filenames).[nb 4]
Not a issue, only in extreme cases of a lot of small files. The OP plans to use it for movies which are usually large and take up a lot of space on the drive.
IMMO It looks like you just ran off and copied something to argue your point when all the points are basically irrelevant.
There is only one format that can easily share 4GB sized files between Mac's and PC's without further complications.
It's ALSO possible to install MacDrive on the PC and format the drive on the Mac HFS+, but I didn't recommend that because I know it's a hassle just like third party NTFS writing software is a hassle on Mac's.
If you so anti-Microsoft format, then you must know Paragon has to pay a license fee to Microsoft for using the NTFS format.
At least with exFAT there is no fee to Redmond, at least not yet.

  • Can I back up the organizer, move my photos and still access them in PSE?

I backed up my catalog to an external HD last night and there were about 20 disconnected files.  I was not able to locate them so I allowed the back up to continue without them.  Do you know what the consequences are for that?
Also, several of my photos are on my C drive and several are on the external HD.  My catalog included photos from both places. When I move the rest of my photos from the C drive of my computer to the external HD will the catalog still be able to access them or will I need to back everything up again?
My goal is to free up space on my computer so PSE will stop freezing up.  All I'm intersted in doing right now is getting all of my photos into the organizer and tagged.  I'll edit them later as I begin to create digital scrapbook pages.
Can someone tell me if the way I'm going about this is correct?
    Thank you,

Thank you Ken.  I backed up everything to my external HD, but now I think I'd rather just move everything there and recall my photos from the ext HD to free up space on my C drive.  Is that possible?

When you use PSE to back up your catalog, the actual photos as well as the catalog (database) are backed up. When you restore from a backup, you can specify where the incoming photos will be placed. Ken

  • SQL 2012 Cluster- How to or Steps to Move Tempdb Files from Local drive to Shared volume

    Hi..

    Hi,
The error message may be thrown out when you attempt to create a database on another shared cluster drive when the SQL Server resource is not dependent on that disk.
Check if you are in the scenario which mentioned in the following article:

  • How come you can't put a Tab in a Cluster?

    Hello,
How come you can't put a Tab Control in a Cluster?
It looks like users have been asking this question
for years, and all the way back to LV versions 6.1.
    Someday, please, pretty please, NI.
Please. Maybe by version 9.5 of LV?
    Kevin.

Ben wrote:  This idea just weirds me out!
Kevin:  Sorry Ben, but think how I must feel.
Ben wrote:  I understand the cosmetic and GUI interaction part of it OK.  Its the "how would it code?" part that send my head spinning.
Kevin:  We don't need to worry about that.  We'll let the NI LABview guiruis worry about that.  They know how to program for TABs and they know how to program for Clustors.  Now they just need to put them together.
Ben wrote:  Would the tab control be available via bundle by name and unbundle?
Kevin:  Yes.  It would simply return the value indicating which page is selected.
Ben wrote:  If the cluster was an indicator and the tab value was "page1" would the user be able to select page2?
Kevin:  Of course, the block diagram would simply pass the enum indicating which page to display.
Ben wrote:  On the block diagram, would there be a relationship between the tab and the elements on each tab?
Kevin:  None.  Or no more so than the relationship of any element on a panel or front panel.
Ben wrote:  On the FP the tab control has a "pages" property and from those we can get an array of refs to the controls on the pages. Would we still be able to that within a cluster.
    Kevin:  Yes.  No Differrence.
Ben wrote:  Aside from the above Q's I would guess that the tab in a cluster would only allow greater abuse of clusters i.e. "Super Clusters".
Kevin:  It is not my intent to abuse any Super Cluster in any way shape or from.  In contrast, would help to spread out some clutter from ones front pannels and move the clutter into tabs within a cluster.  The beauty of it would be that it would come automatic, and handled by labview.
Ben wrote:  There was also until recently, limitations on the size of the type descriptors. Very complex FP's and large clusters would be hit by the problem that the type descriptor need more than the 16 bit allocated.
Kevin:  I would never suggest even coming close to putting more that 65535 items in a cluser in any fashion.
Ben wrote:  I do not pretend to know why NI did or did not allow this. In the end I can only share my guess and hope somone who does know will post.
Kevin:  Yes, somebody from NI might know something about why we can't put a Tab in a Cluster.

While at NI Week and talking to Jeff Kodosky I asked him (thinking that I would get a good under-the-hood explanation of the data type used blah, blah, blah... He said "I'm not sure. It ws probably an over-sight."   I noticed that in LV 8, you can now create a waveform data type constant.
    Ben
    Kevin:
Maybe it was an oversite.  Maybe we can have Tabs in Clusters in 64bit Lab View 9.

I have been trying to access my old photographs, which I initally backed up on using a seagte external hard drive. I used Time Machine to back up my computer onto the hard drive. I later deleted some files and images to make room on my hard drive. I have openned iphoto and tried to browse my old backups but it is only allowing me to view back to 2013, but my initial back up was in 2012. Have my previous back ups been deleted? • SQL 2012 Cluster Multi Instances !

    Hello,
For SQL 2012 Cluster Multi Instances setup, Does the Storage Space should be different for each instance or can be the same?
    Kindly help me in this.
    Regards !

    Hello,
The reason is that's what Microsoft decided to do. It's also that way because disks are a clustered resource and belong to a single resource group. Each SQL Server install will have its own resource group. If a disk could belong to more than one resource
group, and a group fails - then all of the instances with the same disk would fail. That's not what you'd want from an HA solution. Microsoft clustering is a shared nothing model to which this is part of.
    Before installing:

◦The base drive, the one with the drive letter, cannot be shared among failover cluster instances.
