Can't Find Large Folders

Hi all,
Please help. I am using File:Find to look for folders on an external HD which are 2GB or larger. When I set "Kind Is Folder" AND "Size is Greater Than 2 GB," nothing is returned in the results. And yes, I do have 2GB+ folders on the external I'm trying to search.
Next question, how do I issue an "Index" command in the Finder so I can re-index a hard drive?

This is one of the many glitches in the Spotlight/Find GUI. It doesn't work for the simple reason that it uses this metadata for the search:
kMDItemFSSize > 1073741824 (this example File Size is Greater Than 1 GB)
But if you look at the metadata for a folder you will discover there ain't no sech animal as "kMDItemFSSize" for folders, only for files! The Find GUI lets you set up a search that cannot work and never gives you a clue that it can't.
WhatSize should work fine. If the folders you are looking for are not invisible, just open a Finder window in List view, make sure Size is available as one of the column headers and Calculate All Sizes is enabled (bring up View->Show View Options and check the boxes), then click the Sizes column header to arrange by sizes (you may have to click and drag the separator in the Size column header so the space is big enough to display the sizes). When you click the disclosure triangle in front of any given folder that folder's contents will also have the size calculated and be arranged by size.

  • Where can I find the folders that hold the audio & video clips of a project

Unlike weapons of mass destruction, I know individual clips exists and that there is a folder somewhere on my harddrive that holds the audio and video clips of each iMovie project. Where can I find them?

They are inside the Project that was made when you first created and named it.
Right-click (Control click) and choose Show Package Contents. Navigate through these folders.
Do not add or remove items as you may ruin the Project.

  • Can't copy large folders to Windows 2008 Server - error code -50

We have two Macs running SL. We are having file server issues.
    1) When trying to copy a large folder or file (10MB+ possibly) the progress bar gets nearly complete, then we get "This operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occured (error -50)" After the dialog box goes away, the attempted file/folder appears grey on the Server window and cannot be used. It can be deleted.
    2) When browsing the server, newly opened windows often take a few seconds to come up, where under prior OS versions, they open virtually immediately.
Anyone experience these issues or have any suggestions?

I'd like to add a "me, too" to this topic. I am surprised that this is not a more heavily populated thread, as it seems like it should be a major issue to anyone using a mac in a modern windows-based infrastructure.
Thanks to Shawn for the suggestion that changing the folder to have a label colour allows copying: that has been a lifesaver.
It's still embarrassing, however, to have to explain to Mac newcomers that they have to do this before a simple copy...

  • I have saved mail in folders but now can't find the folders.

As an example, mail about my hobbies is saved in the Hobby folder but the only time I see the Hobby folder on my iPad is when I'm saving a message.  I want to retrieve some of those messages from time to time but don't know where to go or how to do it.  The User Guide didn't cover this as far as I could tell.  Thanks.

Have you got 'Find My iPad' enabled? This has to be turned off using the original ID address.
Try going back to http://appleid.apple.com and changing the ID back to the original address. If you can get this accepted, then go to the iCloud preferences/settings pane, stop 'Find My ....', and then sign out. Do the same on any other devices or computers.
Then go back to http://appleid.apple.com and change the ID to the new one. Sign in with that on all your devices.
However if the address which forms the original ID is now not working it can't be validated and it's possible that you won't be able to revert to it. In this situation only Support can help you.
To contact  iCloud Support: if you currently happen to have AppleCare, either because you recently bought Apple hardware or have paid to extend the initial period, you can contact them here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
You will need the serial number of the covered hardware.

  • Importing CD's to external hard drive-can't find folders...

I'm importing CD's to an external hard drive, but I can't find the folders. I've changed the Folder Location to the external drive, and I'm not copying them into the Music Folders. They don't seem to be saved on the external drive, nor are they in the Music Folder in the internal Hard Drive. They're playing OK, even though a few full CD's are not automatically playing unless I find their original location.
Should I load the iTunes.app into the External drive? How can I ensure that the songs are loading on the external drive and not the internal drive? If they are saved on the internal drive, how can I transfer them to the external drive, and have them play regularly? I have this external drive for the exclusive purpose of saving my music, and I'd like to import quite a few more cd's, but I'm waiting to make sure that I'm doing it correctly.
    Thank you, in advance.

I appreciate your help, but I realize that I need to be more specific.
I burned several CD's onto my orginal Mac Hard Drive. Weeks later, I added the external hard drive via a USB port. Then I copied the iTunes Music Folder (the original music files) to the external Hard Drive, and put the original into the Trash. Now when I import new CD's, it saves them to my external drive by default, which I chose through--Change Folder Locations. All of this is fine, it's what I want.
    1) When I choose iTunes, and go to the Library, all the songs are listed, original and new. However, it won't play all of the songs. It asks to find it in the original location, but only a few of the folders are listed, a few of the originals and all of the newly imported CD's.
    2) When I import new CD's, how can I be assured that it's saving them on the external drive only. If the CD takes, let's say 500MB, it doesn't seem to register as taking up 500MB of space on the external drive.
What does consolidating the Library mean?
I know it may sound complicated, but I feel it's an easy problem to alleviate, and I'm missing some simple step.
    Again, thank you in advance.

  • Can't find my photoStream pics in folders.

Summary:  When I'm trying to upload photos to some other application or online picture service I can't find the folders where my pictures are located.
Facts:  I'm using iphoto (importing from camera) and photostream (importing from iOS devices) to get photos on my new iMac.  I'm new to using Macs.  Many uploading and importing services and applications are folder orientated.
Challenge:  Let's say I'm playing with Google's theme's creator and I'm trying to upload pictures to create my own theme.  I can't navigate to a folder on my iMac where I can choose photos to upload, especially PhotoStream photos.
Ancillary Questions:  How or where should I be saving my pictures to be able to upload them to any service I wish?  Should I not be using iPhoto to import photos?  What about Photostream?  I love the "sharing across all my devices" aspect, but if that saves them to a Never Neverland database that's not cross-referenced to a folder that I can access -- what to I do?
    Thank you,
    BeeBitten

Required: A moment to learn how to use iPhoto.
It's a database and it provides a lot of hooks for accessing photos to use in other apps and services.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

  • I installed Maverick on my Intel IMac.  All my icons and menu bar are tiny. How do I get them back to large  Can't find how to make larger in preferences

    Help
All icons now tiny on my 27" iMac.  Can't find anything in preferences to change the sizes.

There isn't a way to change those sizes. You must reduce your display resolution.
In Display System preferences, Display tab, select Scaled.
Then, pick a resolution that is sufficiently large.

  • Out of the blue Itunes can't find a large qty of songs, with a twist

The library has been in tact and functional for some time now until today. Itunes has lost location of a  large quantity of songs in my library. I have gone through the song location process at which point itunes asks whether it should locate all of the missing files in the same location. My understanding is that when you click yes it should look for the missing files in the proper directory and make the connection. What happens for me is that I get  the dreaded pinwheel and itunes freezes. I don't know whether this has to do with the latest itunes update, which I believe happened within the past week. At any rate, does anyone have any ideas about what the problem might be and how I can ultimately find all of the missing songs without a system freeze and without having to do them individually?

This is probably a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. How do I make the text on my calendar larger so I can actually read it when I print it out? I am using a MacBook.

Press "Command P" and when the Print dialogue box comes up, towards the bottom there is an option allowing you to choose the text size, i.e: small, med, large.
    Hope this helps,

  • Can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder

I can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder. I've never had this happen before. I tried both using the new folder icon and choosing "new folder" from the actions icon. The only unusual thing I'm doing now is working with Spaces enabled, but I can't imagine that this has anything to do with the problem. Selecting and hitting "return" doesn't allow me to either erase existing text or overwrite with new text. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Sue A.

    Same here --
I just created a new folder and couldn't change its name. Finder would give me "more info" (permissions certainly not an issue) and allow me to delete (and then recreate) the folder, but not change its name.
Problem came from out of the blue, on a one-week-old system with all OS updates. Also found this old thread, which also suggests a Finder restart: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8989639
So that'll probably do it, but what gives?
Not so impressed with 10.5.7 so far... first a complete system crash while doing no more than downloading updates (a few hours after booting up for the first time), then networking stopped working (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2003868), now this...

I uploaded the images from the card to my Pro (Aperture 3) and while the import info said 1500 images were uploaded, I can't find the RAW images.  Aperture put about 700 images in an untitled project folder, but all the images are the JPEGs.  What am I missing?

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

Can't find mail download or mail preference folders in library, where are they?

adding backing vocals is a feature, I can't find them or how to do it.
The backing vocals are software instruments, listed in the "Choir" section of the software instrument browser. Afaik, the basic GarageBand does not have these instruments. My "choirs" all came with the JamPacks. The JamPacks are no longer sold separately, but if you buy Mainstage 2, you will get all Jam pack instruments and loops to be used with GararageBand; and it is not very expensive (~23 € at the AppStore).

Where were you downloading the to,   iPhoto, a folder on the Desktop, where? Are they still on the camera's memory card?  If you deleted them from the card and haven't used the card since they can be recovered with recovery software like  MediaRECOVER. You can download the demo version to verify they can be recovered before purchasing it.  Other similar apps can be found at MacUpdate.com by searching for "photo recovery" or similar terms.
