Can't get iTunes to open - rage building!!!!!

I just got an iPod and connected it to my pc. Connected to iTunes and it appeared to be downloading the songs. it said it was done and it could be disconnected. So I did. Then I got a Do not disconnect warning and now, when ever i try to open itunes, it says an unexpected error has occured and can't open.
I've reinstalled about 5 times, restarted and still nothing. Tech support didn't help either. Anyone else experience this? What can I do to fix it?

The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevents it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
and
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistance the next time you run it and you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
Hope this helps.

  • Still can't get iTunes to open

After help from this DB I uninstalled every part of my iPod Nano and iTunes from my computer, re-installed everything and still can't get iTunes to open. It thinks about it and then just doesn't open, doesn't run, nothing. I even tried going on iTunes on here and surfing around and can't get the Music Store to open. If I click on it, it opens for 1/2 a second and then flips back to the main page. Any thoughts? Sorry to be such a PITA. I'm just frustrated with a new iPod and no music.

Okay, it seems I am not the only one with this problem. Sorry... did not see the other post until I typed this. But this is frustrating. Anyone know if I can use a later version and still use my Nano?

  • I can not get itunes to open on Windows 7...

I just got a new iPhone and wanted to back up my old iPhone to my computer one more time before switching over...Two hours later I still can not get iTunes to open.  I have two different acounts on my computer, iTunes will load on the secondary account, but not my main account.  I logged into iTunes on that account and now have issues with libraries, and overriding and synching and deleting, and a million other messages that made me nervous about backing up my phone through the secondary account.  I just want to get iTunes to work on my main account.  I have tried several different things, and am getting incredibly frustrated.  Just in case I messed up a step of the "obvious" fixes, I would appreciate anything anyone could suggest to help   Thank you!

Doublechecking. Have you tried the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document?

How can I get iTunes to open to Library instead of the iTunes Store.  It does it on one of my computers, but I don't know how I did it.

For me, iTunes always opens to whatever I had selected previously when it was closed.
In other words, if I had Apps selected when I closed iTunes, the next time I opened iTunes it would be on Apps.

    1. I do have Norton Anti-Virus 2005
    2. When i attempt to launch QuickTime, i get a message that says "Some of your QuickTime software is out of date. You can fix this problem by updating to the latest version." If I click the "Do it Now" button, it tells me that my software is already the latest version. If I click cancel, the message pops up again. If I hit cancel again, then QuickTime will launch.
    3. Yes, in Task Manager, iTunes.exe shows up for a few seconds and then disappears without iTunes loading.
good gracious. you may have two different things going on at once here. (the particular QuickTime symptoms you're getting are not typically associated with an itunes error message free launch failure.)
just doublechecking something first ... you're getting no error messages whatsoever when launching itunes? (my questions for wazzle were designed to sort through possible causes for error message free itunes launch failures.)

  • Can't get iTunes to open after upgrading

After I downloaded the new version of iTunes (6.0.4) i couldn't get it to open. No matter what I do the application will not open. The iTunes.exe process shows up on my Windows Task Manager screen, but the application doesn't appear under the applications tab. I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes and repairing iTunes and nothing has worked. I've also tried downloading old versions of iTunes and they didn't work either. I've also tried turning off all of my anti-virus software and uninstalling then reinstalling it. All of my music is still intact, but I can't play it or use the music store because Itunes won't open. PLease help me get iTunes to open.

How didu get those older versions, i cant find them

  • Can't get iTunes to open, Can't uninstall QuickTime. Why?

When I try to open QuickTime I get "Error -2095, make sure QuickTime is properly installed." Vers 6.5.0.48
When I try to open iTunes "encountered a problem and needs to close." Vers 7.0.2.16
I read forum and advice was to uninstall iTunes, which I was able to do successfully.
Then I tried to uninstall QuickTime and got: C:\windows\system32\QUICKT~1\UNINS~1.log
    Exception C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll\control_rundll
I went to windows explorer and found system32\QuickTime and the uninstall file is there but system does not think it is there.
I am in a quandry. I love my ipod nano, 2gb, which I bought a few days ago, but I sure wish I had read these forum postings before buying. I am discouraged, disheartened, disappointed.
I have 363 songs on my ipod now and would love to move new songs to ipod, but can't get anything to work.
Any help out there? Is there anyone from Apple who can help? hello? Is there a phone number for Apple tech support?
Thanks for any help on this issue.

It sounds as though you need the bit towards the bottom of that page called:
Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer
You can get the Windows Installer Cleanup utility here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
BTW iTunes cannot work if Quicktime doesn't work.

  • I can't get iTunes to open from the desktop

I am using iTunes 7.0.2.16 and the only way I can get it to open is through foxy tunes in my Firefox browser. I would delete it and reinstall it but I have a lot of carefully maintained playlists and I am afraid I will have to redo all of them if I delete iTunes.
The error message says: the action is only valid for products that are currently installed.
I get this when I click on the desktop icon or from the start menu.
    Any ideas?
Also, if I delete and reinstall iTunes will all of my playlists be deleted?
    thanks in advance

Im not having the exact same problem, but since downloading itunes 7.7, itunes wont recognize my ipod when I connect it.

  • TRIED EVERYTHING!! Can't get Itunes to open

Can I delete everything on my computer relating to Itunes and just download ver. 6 again and install it? I've searched through these discussions extensively and I think I've tried everything to get Itunes to work. With no luck...
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

Wll, I tried deleting everything relating to Itunes (I made copies of the library and .xml files) and then re-installed it. Still nothing. What could it be? I've seriously tried everything now! I've repaired the disk, repaired permissions, run the batchmod program, deleted preferences, duplicated the library file, reinstalled the program, installed the latest Quicktime and Ipod software, installed combo upgrade for 10.3.9 - am I leaving anything out? I think I've reached my wit's end!
I have a tower so, I don't know if i can bring it down to the Apple Store...
Is there anything else I can try?
