Can't get picture - BUT PERMISSION IS OK

Question

In my applet the following code ( from init() ) throws an exception: Access denied.
Image img = getImage(getCodeBase(), "pic.gif");
images[i] = img;
mediaTracker.addImage(img, 0);
Fine - but this code section doesn't:
try{
SecurityManager sec = System.getSecurityManager();
String str = "D:\\Docs\\Kawa\\test\\pic.gif";
if (security != null){
System.out.print("\nAccess: "+str);
security.checkRead(str);
System.out.println("\t OK");
catch...
Both code sections are from init(), and the files are stored in D:\Docs\Kawa\test\
So I have a problem:
- I have permission to access the file.
- But havn't when I call getImage(...) for the same image.
- I've tried to edit the security file
- Checked the path and URL
- The file if it was damaged
- Tried it in the applet viewer and browser
- Changing options in IE 5.5
- Closed the firewall and the anti virus
- The pic is in the same dir as the class file
Do I've to sign it? just for one tiny picture!!! It can't be so difficult?

It's me again. I've solved the problem with swing:
ImageIcon img = new ImageIcon("picture.gif");
img = img.getImage();
drawImage(img,...)I don't use the Applet.getImage(...) and the MediaTracker anymore - because the image was null when I called drawImage(...) - it throw an EXCEPTION. Even when I tried MediaTracker.waitForAll();Well it doesn't make any sense for me. Can you explain it - please.
