Can't keep my computer awake

I plugged my 2009 MacBook Pro into my Time Machine external drive after a 3-week trip. Within a few minutes, the computer went to sleep and won't wake up. I have hard rebooted it and got the blue screen, but then it goes right back to sleep. So I tried the PRAM and SM  reset and got my desktop pic for a few seconds, but then it goes right back to a black screen. If I hit a key, it sometimes gives a sound, but the sleep light is still glowing.  What should I do?

Windows has a program called "Device Manager" which can be accessed through the Control Panels option of the Start Menu
Start
Control Panel -
"Performance and Maintainance" if in Category View or "System" in Classic View
after clicking Performance and Maintainance (in Category view) or opening System (in Classic view) and the Sytem control panel is open
Click the "Hardware" tab, you'll find the "Device Manager" section at the top, click the "Device Manager" button.
The Device Manger will open. This gives a profile af everything bother internal and peripheral that is connected to your computer.
You will see "Universal Serial Bus controllers" at the bottom (unless your system is modified.) That will show you how many USB port you have. Most motherboards have 2-4 high speed ports, if your computer is new all ports should be USB 2.0
NOTE: USB ports on keyboards and most monitors are not USB 2.0, you need to plug the device directly into the machine if possible.
If you have a USB hub that is powered externally (plugs into a powerpoint) that will be USB 2.0 - Hubs that run only of the USB port are not USB 2.0
Hope that information is useful.
Kind Regards,
Peter.

  • How do I get Snowleopard to keep the computer awake when busy?

I'd like the computer to disregard the powersave options when files are being moved from one location to another, a movie is playing, and during any other task in for which interruption isn't preferable.

You can set up your preferences by going to System Preferences ->
    1) open Desktop & Screensaver: temporarily set Screensaver to "Never", and
    2) open Energy Saver and temporarily set both computer sleep and display sleep to "Never".
You can later change those back to your original settings.

  • How can I turn off the screen while keeping the mac awake?

I am using teamviewer to remote connect to my office Imac from home. However, every time I connected, my imac screen will turn on and everyone else in the office can see what my imac is doing..
Is there some method to turn off the screen while keeping the mac awake, so I can remote connect to it?
PS: I am using OSX 10.7.3

Energy Saver, you can keep the computer awake while the screen saver shuts the monitor off but I'm not sure that would do it for you.

  • How to keep hard drives awake?

And no, unchecking "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in system preferences does NOT work...
I have my original and 3 additional hard drives in my G4. 2 are set up as a RAID system and contain most of my work (clients) files. If I work on personal stuff for maybe 15 minutes or so, and don't access my drives containing client files, they fall asleep, even if I'm banging away on the keyboard doing other stuff...
Then, if I go to access something from one of those drives, there's a 10 - 15 second lag while I wait for them to wake up. Or if I'm busy working on client stuff for a while, and a iCal reminder pops up, and I want to click on it (either to view the event now, or "remind me later") or whatever, I have to wait again for 5 - 10 seconds while THAT drive wakes up...
Drives me crazy... How can I keep these things awake until I"m actually away from the keyboard and not doing anything on the computer???

If you run the 10.4 version of Apple System Profiler \[Apple Menu > About this Mac > More info] and look at the "Power" tab, you will see the second number is your Hard Disk Sleep time in minutes. They must think we all have laptops --the default is like 10 minutes. Knowing that this setting is independent, but not accessible in Energy Saver, made me crazy for just the reasons you listed.
There are two ways to change it. There are command line Utilities that can change it, and you can change it directly using Property List Editor. There does appear to be a downloadable package that includes PList Editor.
The command line Utility that changes it is pmset. It is documented in the man pages here:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/pmset.1. html
Check to see whether it is included in your System before you get too far -- I have it, but I have the Server Admin tools loaded.

  • My computer with my original library has crashed, how can i keep all the songs on my iphone, but still add new songs from my new library?

My computer has died and will not be working ever again. Problem is, i have all of my songs on that computer in my itunes library as well as on my phone. Now i want to add some songs to my phone from some new cds and it tells me i will loose all my songs on my phone right now when i perform the sync. How can i keep all of the songs on my iphone because now i do not have copies of these songs anymore except on my iphone?????? From what i have read, itunes is a joke because it only goes one way apparently. Not happy with itunes right now, more then a bit of a joke

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, big mistake, then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone to the computer:  File>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to buy a 3rd party program to get any other music off of the iphone ( not supported by Apple).
When you sync the iphone, it will erase the current content and replace with content form the new computer.
"Not happy with itunes right now, more then a bit of a joke"
Not itunes fault that you did not do the very basics and maintain a backup copy.

  • How can I keep a playlist on phone when syncing with new computer?

When syncing my IPhone I am prompted with an ominous message that says "Are you sure you want to remove the existing music ... from this phone and sync with this ITunes library? Music .... will be removed and items will be synced from this ITunes library" The answer is no because I have a playlist I would like to keep on the phone, but add one which resides on the computer I am attempting to sync with. That is not an choice presented, the choices are Cancel or Remove and Sync. Apple should either give more options or at least a better explanation. I have synced this phone and computer combination before but have since created a new playlist in the computer (a Mac Mini).
So how can I keep a playlist on the phone and add one from the computer too? Is it possible to view the phone as a drive and move items around in that manner? I use ITunes on both Windows and Mac platforms but this issue has always been problem for me. I also have IPhone 3 (used as an IPod), IPhone 4S and Iphone 5.

Unless you can get the iPod backup file (and restore the iPod from that file on your new computer) from the "dead" computer you will lose all the app data you can export via email.
    - Yu can trabsfer iTnes purchases from the iPod by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - You can transfer non-itunes purchased music to the new computer by using one of the third-party programs discussed in this previous discussion.
    Best iPod to PC
    - After you move the stuff to the new computer, either restore the iPod from the backup, or if no backup, restore to factory defaults, new iPod and sync.

I had 4 installation disk but the last installation disk is missing. I still allow to keep the Photoshop , Indesign and illustrator software in the computer but i can only keep that on a trial of 30 days. In order to use it permanently, I have to activate the Suite. As the phone activation service is no longer available. I try the online activation as mention in the phone message when I tried to call, but is not successful@ as it didn't bring to an activation page. What should I do to activate it or solve the problem?

There should be an option tro activate when you run any of the installed programs.

  • I have installed Firefox on my flashdrive, so I can use it from computer to computer, but I noticed it did not keep my plugins or extensions I installed on firefox. IS their a way I can solve this?

The main purpose for me to installing Firefox on my flash drive was to keep the plugins and extensions in that browser, so I can use it from computer to computer and keep my history and bookmarks.. After putting the flash drive into a different computer, Firefox did work but it did not have my plugins or extensions. Is their a way to make this work?

    I'll try Silverfast.
Err... Try VueScan first. VueScan have one-for-all software, Silverfast - lot of modules for specific scanners. If they not have version for your specific scanner - no chances.
VueScan works with at least some IRIS models: http://applejac.typepad.com/applejac_macintosh_users/2009/05/vuescan-universal-s oftware-image-capture-tool.html
And I see 10.7-10.8 support on IRIS page: http://www.irislink.com/c2-1628-189/Mac-OS-compatibility-support.aspx

  • I'm not nearly ready to buy a new computer. How can I keep using Firefox 16?

    Hi,
I have an I-MAC 10.5.8 and am not about to purchase a new computer anytime soon. How can I keep using Firefox 16?

    You asked,
Is Firefox 16 still secure for me to use?
Right now Firefox 16 has the latest security fixes but it won't get future fixes. ''[https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2012/10/04/we-bid-you-adieu-spotted-cat/ On November 20th, Firefox will end support for users operating Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). After this date, users will stop receiving Firefox updates, including new features and security fixes.]''
When will Firefox 17 be launched?
November 20th, [https://wiki.mozilla.org/RapidRelease/Calendar according to the release calendar].
And if I upgrade my Mac to Lion software (which I'm planning to do, but not immediately), will that work?
Yes. The [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/17.0/system-requirements/ Firefox 17 system requirements] listed for Mac include OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), OS X 10.7 (Lion) and OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
