Can,t quit mail in iMac.?

I tried to shut down mail and would not ,had to force quit,

If it is a one-off or a rare occurence then you can probably ignore the problem. Force quitting, as you did, is the right thing to do when an app hangs, fails to respond or won't quit. If the issue recurs on a regular basis it probably needs further exploration to try to find the cause.

  • I can't quit mail and thus, I can't shut down the computer. How do you "manually " shut down mail or computer (control-alt-delete in wintel world)

    I cannot quit mail for some reason. How can I shut it down?
    I need to do this before I can shut down the computer.

    To Force Quit a program go to the Apple Logo item in the menu bar and select Force Quit. Select the program from the list and click Force Quit.
    To Hard Power down it is the same as Wintel. Press the power button until the system Turns Off. Not the best solution but needed sometimes. Yes even on a Mac.

  • My macbook air will not restart, because it says the "mail" cancels  the restart, but I can not quit mail.

    How can I get my Macbook air to restart? Each time I try to restart my laptop, I am unable to because it says "mail cancels the restart". However I am unable to quit mail. Please Help.

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
    If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Can't quit Mail

    This is weird. Mail is very slow, seems not to be sending all my emails (they don't show up in 'Sent'), and I can't quit the application normally - I have to do a Force Quit. Please help.
    Thanks,
    RPN

    Rebuild all your mailboxes.
    Click on each mailbox for each account. Be sure to do it for the sent, trash and junk mailboxes as well. When you've clicked on a mailbox got to the mailbox menu and click rebuld. Should fix this problem.

    Type Mail in the search field top right corner of the window.

  • TS2537 Mac OS X v10.7.3 latest version. Can't use Mail

    I'm having the same problem with Mail but with the latest Lion version (OS X v.10.7.3).
    Can't quit Mail, can't read messages, can't shut down.
    I just moved to an Apple computer with the hope to live in the "promise land" of no more crashes.
    Never happened to me on a PC a problem like that.
    Need help, please!!

    Yeah, that was just a diagnostic tool to see where we might start.
    Back in the Original account...
    Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
    If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
    Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

  • TS3276 I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

    I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

    I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
    My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
    I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

  • Why do I have to Quit mail to refresh my mailboxes on the iMac?

    I have an iMac OS X Lion 10.7.4. A recent purchase.
    I have an iPad and an iPhone (regrettably updated to 6.0 - don't like the map and can't stand the fact all my facebooks friend's birthdays have automatically gone into my diary!!)
    I have a yahoo email account and have all my devices pointing to my yahoo address for email.
    Until recently all my devices were generally sync'ed to yahoo.  I say generally as the iMac keeps losing my email password and can't send or connect to yahoo until I re-type my email password - why?!!
    Unfortunatly now in addition to the above my mailboxes on the iMac only refresh if Quit mail and restart it.  It does not refresh automatically, not when I select Inbox or any other mailboxes for that matter.
    I have checked my setting and that all seems normal.
    Any help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks
    Fataneh

    Please forgive my ignorance.
    I have found Keychain Access but I don't understand what I have to do next.
    Which Category?  Passwords?
    Also which one is the mail server?  imap.mail.yahoo.com or smtp.mail.yahoo.com (both have the same password)
    or any other enteries?
    Thanks for your help
