  • What does OS10.5 use to screen share with Windows and Linux ?

    i have found screen sharing Mac to Mac is EASY
    but lets say i want to see the screen on my Windows XP computer
    OR my Linux Ubuntu or CentOS desktop Computers
    what do you reccomend and is there anything else i need to know
    thanks in advance

    First, I trust you have the firewalls open for the needed port(s), e.g. 5900, 5901, etc.
    Then, from what I've played with, the Leopard Screen Sharing app only connects to VNC servers that are configured for VNC Authentication (or no authentication) and that are using only Protocol 3.3.
    Depending upon the version and implementation of the VNC Server, you might have to pass startup commands like this:
    vncserver --SecurityTypes=VncAuth --Protocol3.3
    (and of course, have a VncAuth password set, e.g. with vncpasswd.)
    I'm not sure how, or if, these settings can be configured in Vino (the 'Remote Desktop' option in Gnome,) but if starting vncserver from an entry in /etc/sysconfig/vncservers, it might be like this:
    VNCSERVERS="1:username"
    VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 1420x790 -depth 24 --SecurityTypes=VncAuth --Protocol3.3"
    (and again, you'd need a vncpasswd set for the username starting the VNC server.)
    Now, only Vino does the automatic Bonjour RFB advertisement, which makes the VNC server show up in Finder (without which, you'll need to manually start Screen Sharing.)
    However, you can create the Bonjour advertisement in Linux by creating a file called /etc/avahi/service/rfb.service
    and filling it with the following text:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone='no'?>
    <!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd">
    <service-group>
    <name replace-wildcards="yes">%h VNC Server</name>
    <service>
    <type>rfb.tcp</type>
    <port>5901</port>
    </service>
    </service-group>
    and then, doing a:
    sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon restart
    In the Windows VNC Server (at least the one by RealVNC), there is an advanced button (or a Legacy tab) where you can find the option to set "Protocol 3.3" to true. And, on the security tab, make sure you have it set to "VNC Password Authentication" (configured with a password set) and NOT to "NT Logon Authentication". Unfortunately, I don't know how to set a Windows machine to make the necessary RFB service Bonjour advertisement to get it to show up in Finder. However, if you got a Bonjour/Rendezvous Proxy (e.g. http://ileech.sourceforge.net/index.php?content=RendezvousProxy-Download , for the Mac, I like the Java version, the native one is PPC.) and ran it on your Mac (or the Windows machine), you could simulate the adverstisment -- just create an proxy entry for a rfb.tcp service, pointing to port 5900 on the IP address of your Windows box.
    Finally, even once you connect to a 3rd party VNC server with the Screen Sharing app, every so often you'll get a 'no encryption' warning -- of course, because Apple doesn't talk RealVNC's encryption and vice-versa so it connects without encryption.

  • Screen sharing with Windows computers

    Hi,
    Can someone suggest to me good software for screen sharing from my Mac at work to some of the Windows workstations, servers here at my work?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Thanks. I'll try it. I've used it between PCs before.

  • Audio Static using SKYPE, dv7t-4000 with Windows 7

    I have an HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 with Windows 7, purchased June 2010. I've used SKYPE for several years, today I have intermittent static so loud I can't hear the other participant.
    I did install the Google Plus /Hangout Plug In in an attempt to try that service, but uninstalled it later as a troubleshooting measure (seemed to have the same static issue in Google Hangout).
    I automatically download and install all windows updates.
    I've tried updating, rolling back drivers (but not manually searching for new drivers).
    Its possible that when one user turns video off, the static doesn't occur (it didn't within several minutes of testing).
    I can run HULU shows without issue...
    Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

    I never got a direct answer. I did find a few You Tube videos with great suggestions. One was to find the Skype program file, view propeties, turn off a few features and try running it in a previous version of windows. I made those changes, but the problem didn't go away. I found something else (?? the display theme) that I followed that ultimately increased my font size (yeah!) but also didn't solve the problem. Eventually I went back to undo what I did... although I still get a message when I run Skype (not using all the features available?), and the problem is gone. I haven't tried other programs yet (google hangout).
    Another friend suggested it would be cheaper to buy an external microphone/speakers, but the problem occured whether I used my earbuds or the built-ins, so I'm not sure that would work either.
    Bottom line, my problem is gone, I have no idea why!

  • Screen Sharing With Windows XP

    I'm having a bit of trouble getting the screen of a Windows XP computer to show up on my Mac, using OS X's Screen Sharing feature.
    First I launch the Screen Sharing app, found at: Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices > Screen Sharing.app
    A window pops up that says "Connect to Shared Computer" and prompts me to enter the "Host:". I type in the Window XP computer's IP address "192.168.0.15"
    A new window pops up that says "Enter your password to share the screen of 192.168.0.15". I type in the password required to log into that Windows XP computer and click Connect.
    A little progress indicator spins, saying "Connecting..." and then... "Connection failed to 192.168.0.15". "Make sure that Screen Sharing is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect"
    I'm running UltraVNC Server on my Windows XP computer. What am I doing wrong?

    I do not know anything about UltraVNC, but traditionally, the VNC password is a separate password that is set as part of the VNC server configuration. It is generally NOT the user account password.
    There is a Microsoft Remote Desktop Client available if you would prefer:

    As well as CoRD

  • Can not use default screen saver with this version of Mac OS X

    Hello,
    I created a 10.6.4 image on a Mac Pro that I have installed on a new 27" iMac. Every thing works fine, as expected, except the screen savers (all Apple default). All screen savers appear in the list when booted off the Mac Pro, but when booted off the iMac, all but 2 disappear (Computer Name and Flurry). Also, the ones listed under Pictures show up, but when I try to use one it says "Can not use 'screen saver name' with this version of Mac OS X - Contact your vendor."
    Also, the flurry screen saver runs extremely slow.
    Unfortunately, I don't have another iMac to compare versions with, but I've compared with a new Macbook Pro and they are exactly the same. Is there a cache or a pref I can flush?

    The old screensavers were about the first things that didn't work when moving to Snow Leopard, so my guess would be the iMac is booting in 32-bit vs 64-bit mode (or whichever mode is incompatible with your screensavers).

    LightBearer.

    All you'll need is a router. You can get a wireless one or a wired one. They're pretty cheap.

  • Can I use Snow Leopard Server with Windows clients?

    Mainly for e-mails and calendars. I have small office with 12 windows computers from XP to Win 7 and MS Office from 2003 to 2007. Will Snow Leopard Server work with that?

    Can Mac OS X Server do this?  Sure.
    You're going to be learning a whole lot about running a server, regardless.
    You really need to sort out what you have here and where you want to be, and how to upgrade or replace yor migrate your environment, and before you add the substantial increase in complexity of serving Windows from Mac.  If you can't get off of Office circa 2003 or similarly old software, what are you going to do when you find, say, an incompatibility, or a need to migrate mail clients?     Who are you going to call for help?
    I'd guess that Small Business Server (SBS) is likely your best target here.
    AFAIK, Exchange Server (which I'm guessing is what you're using) supports larger mailboxes in newer releases.
    Look at the sustaining costs for what you're considering purchasing, too.  How much it'll cost to configure, deploy and maintain the box and the network.  Up-front costs are an obvious consideration, but maintaining many boxes and many versions itself introduces costs.
    The arrival of Lion Server next month does not change my opinion.   (And I'm not usually suggesting Windows and Windows Server boxes, either.)  (And with the arrival of Lion and Lion Server, I'll follow my usual approach and not look to upgrade to the first release of that (or any other) new platform, if there are business-critical functions and services involved.  You need time to debug and test the deployment.)

  • Can't use HP Laserjet 4000 with Windows 7 or even in XP virtual mode

    I've tried everything I can think of; read everything I can find; downloaded drivers, updates, and patches; uninstalled the printer, reinstalled the printer, rebooted, ad nauseum.  And I still can't get it to work -- this week, that is.  Last week it printed.  All the check tests say it should work.  In XP Virtual Mode the status menu shows the document printed -- but it must be a virtual copy, because I can't find it.  When I try to print in Windows 7, the status menu shows "error"  but troubleshooting can't find anything wrong.  Any suggestions?  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

    Been using Laserjet 4000 under XP for years. Installed Win 7, downloaded driver from this site http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=14952&pr... but it did not work(Driver not installed).

  • Can i use activesync on mbp with windows xp & parallel

    OK, new Mac user needs help at v basic level, I want to sync a windows smartphone (htc3300) with outlook installed on windows xp, which runs via parallel on a mabook pro with tiger OS. At the moment the acivesync can't find the smartphone, am i expecting too much of xp on a mac or do I need to tell the mac to allow traffic that it doesn't normally see. It's connected via a usb & all the usbs are working normally.
    I've previously synced with a vista pc with no probs

    Parallels does support ActiveSync for Windows Mobile devices, but since Parallels is not an Apple product you should post your question on the Parallels discussion boards:

  • Using TrueCrypt volume shared with Windows

    I will be getting a new MacBook Pro shortly, and I plan an having (at least ) 3 partitions - OS X 10.7 HFS+, Windows 7 NTFS, and a data partition I would like to share between the OSs, and have encrypted with TrueCrypt. I would like to store all "important" data on this encrypted partition, including email, photos, most/all user-created files, possibly music/videos, possibly preferences. Questions:
    What filesystem should I use? I am currently thinking FAT32 or ExFAT. (I plan on having the data parition be maybe 300GB? The FAT32 limit of 4GB files would only be an issue when I am creating DVD images I think...)
    If I am using Mail.app, iPhoto, ... — what problems am I going to run into with putting data in "non-standard" places?
    Are apps going to complain about dealing with a non-HFS/"insecure" (i.e. with no permissions) filesystem? (I will be the only user of the MBP.)
    Does anyone have a configuration like this?
    Any potential problems with using a hidden encrypted partition?
    Any other questions I should be asking?
    Thanks for any input here.

    You will not be able to use Truecrypt in this configuration, I advise not trying.
