Can Tiger 10.4 clients connect to Mountain Lion server

We are in the process of an upgrade and are doing the servers first.
Clients are mostly running OS X 10.4.11, we have already upgraded one server ( 10.7.5 Lion) and the 10.4 clients can connect no problem.
The next 2 servers we bought now have 10.8.1 Mountain Lion and the 10.4 clients can't even see them on the network.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks, Jim

Yes, they will work with the Mtn. Lion Servers.

  • Can a Snow Leopard client connect to a Lion Server?

I have an XSAN setup with two Mac Mini servers.
I have a few Xserve lying around and I want to make use of them.
One Duo Core which is not working at the moment. I think I can install Lion on that one? Right?
Then I have two G5 - none intel, which I'm thinking I'll reinstall Snow Leopard on and use them as clients.
Can they connect to a Lion Server? I have a few XSAN licenses left which I think I need for OS's older than Lion?

You can't install Lion on a Core Duo-based system It requries Core2 Duo as a baseline. The Core Duo is a 32-bit chip whereas the Core2 Duo is 64-bit.
Then I have two G5 - none intel, which I'm thinking I'll reinstall Snow Leopard on and use them as clients.
Nope, again. Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based system. The highest you can go with the PowerPC machines is Leopard (10.5.x)

This may be irrelevant given the above, but define 'connect' please. There are a myriad of ways of 'connecting' a client to a server. In many cases they don't have to be the same OS, platform, processor or anything else (how many web servers do you think are running Mac OS X to match your client?

  • Where's the Mountain Lion Server Documentation?

Been waiting all day for Mountain Lion Server Documentation the be posted to no avail. What gives? Especially need the Mountain Lion Server Upgrading & Migrating manual. I help run a small educational cmoputer center in Santa Cruz CA and we need to transition from 10.5 Leopard Server on an old G5 Power Mac to 10.8 Mountain Lion Server on a new 2012 Mac mini as soon as it goes on sale. We particularly need the Workgroup Manager migration app documentation ASAP. Can any Apple employees explain why the Mountain Lion server documentation is not posted even though you can download the Mountain Lion Server since this morning?

Good Luck in Migrating from 10.5 Server to 10.8 Server... There's soo  many  changes..  Each time I've upgraded since 10.2.X server, I've always had to manual migrate things. Forget the automated upgraded process since it always hangs for me.
As for 10.6.8 Server, Apple changed the imap/pop server software from cyrus to dovecot. There's a script if I recall somewhere in 10.6.8 Server convert the imap mail of all the users.  However before you run that script I recommend that you rebuild the imap structure in cyrus before you do...

  • Server App can't connect to a Mountain Lion server

    Hi,
I installed OS X Mountain Lion Server (2.2.1) on a 2012 Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.4. I am able to access all the options using the Server.app on the Mini. Then I installed the Server.app (2.2.1) on a 2010 MacBook Pro running 10.8.4. On trying to configure the Server options on the Mac Mini from the MacBook Pro by providing the correct Mac Mini admin credentials, the password is not validated correctly. This happens when both the systems are on the same network or on different networks.
I am certain that the username / password provided is correct, since using the same credentials I can successfully remote into the Mac Mini using Apple Remote Desktop (3.6.1) when both the systems are on the same network or on different networks.
My situation supersedes the resolution provided in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3960?locale=en_US. Note that the command sudo launchctl list | grep -q com.apple.servermgrd && echo loaded || echo not loaded returns loaded on the Mac Mini.
    Please help!

I am having exactly the same setup and exactly the same problem - nevertheless I would like to add some more information in order to hopefully find / get help from other readers in here.
I am using DynDNS - not a dedicated domain. I do not utilize an AirPort Extreme for port forwarding and else. All the necessary port forwardings were triple checked!
    - First of all "Apple Remote Desktop" is able to connect to my server over the internet (screen sharing) and locally in my LAN. No troubles here.
    - My iOS devices can connect using various VNC clients without any troubles.
    - VNC connections started within Safari (MacBook Pro) do work very well, too.
    - All kinds of WebDAV connections are working like a charme.
    - When connecting with "Server.app" from my MacBook Pro it asks if I would like to trust the self-signed certificate before I can enter name and password. After trusting that certificate it doesn't matter which account information I am entering: none is accepted. It does not make any difference if I am using a local user account or a user network account (both configured as being allowed to administer that server). "Server.app" does not accept any information provided.
I've been following the KB advice, too that c xavier mentioned. "servermgrd" is loaded!
For some odd yet unknown reason neither WAN nor LAN FTP login does work, too. It just gives me a time out, as already mentioned WebDAV is working fine.
Sorry I could not help You, c xavier! I just thought that some additional information could help...

  • Can't connect to mountain lion smtp server

Hello. I've been trying to get outside mail clients (Mac Mail) to connect to a virtual domain mail server I am hosting at work. Our main domain name works fine. And the virtual domain works fine as long as you are on our internal network. But for some reason, outside of our network, I can only receive POP mail with the server but I can't send any mail with the server. This is on a completely new installation of OS X Mountain Lion/Server. Everytime I try to get mail I get a message that the smtp connection to the sever failed even though I know the settings are the exact same settings I use to connect when I'm on our local network and it connects, sends, and receives just fine. How do I allow the outside world to connect?

I did a work around which I didn't really want to do but my head hurts from trying to find an answer for days and no one here apparently has a clue as to why it's happening.
I gave my mountain lion a static ip address and then made a hosts entry on all the windows machines. Viola, I can connect to all the mac shares with no account screen/password screens popping up. I shouldn't have to go into the hosts file on every single windows machine just so I can see shares on the macbook. Something's broke somewhere.

regarding mountain lion server: clients experience intermittent service connections. the server system log has the following error- Client handshake failed (6):113: Server not accepting client connections. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thank you

    Hi Jason
I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

  • Server Connections Interrupted - Mountain Lion, latest client and server upgrade

    Hello,
I have seen several errors of a similar kind with no definite fix anywhere on here, so I thought I would post this.
We are running a network with a Mountain Lion Server on a Mac Mini, connected to a router for internet access and connected to a local network for client computers. All the clients are running the latest version of Mac OS X Mountain Lion and are connecting to remote home directories on the server. They also use several group directories.
As of late, they have been getting the message: "Server Connections Interrupted. Ignore / Disconnect all" concerning their group volumes.
I haven't been able to find anything in the logs indicating why this happens, or how to fix it, or why it started appearing.
What have people experienced out there? It appears on all sorts of user accounts, on different computers in different areas of the workplace.
    / Z.

    Additional data:
There is no WIFI enabled on the network, all is networked using ethernet.
There's a Time Capsule on the Server, which backs up the server data regularly. This seems to be connected one way or another from the threads I've read, but those are from aprox. two years ago while this started happening recently.

  • Mountain Lion Server with Windows 8.1 Client communication problems

We have a Mountain Lions Server and several diffent Clients that need access to it.
Macs work fine  Linux clients work fine
Windows 8.1 only "sees" the router but not the Server or the Printer
the "Windows proofs" tell me its a Problem with the server
has anyone an Idea what I can do?
And pls don't tell me I should change all Windows clients to Mac. If I had so much money I would, but at the moment the existing systems need to stay.
    @ Templeton Pack
I know this is a Mac Community
and no google doesn't solve all Problems

Well no, Google doesn't solve all problems, but its a great place to start.
As far as your issue goes, you need to provide more details before anyone could begin to guess, as we're not mind readers here.
What do you mean by "Windows only sees the router, not the server"?  What does "sees" mean in this context?
Who / what is Windows proofs?
How are you trying to access the server?  SMB file sharing?  If so, how are you trying to connect?  What happens when you try?  Do the users trying to authenticate to the server have an account on it and access to the necessary services?

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

  • I am really dissatisfied about the Mavs, how can i put it back to my Mountain Lion? since I've downloaded the Mavs, my iMovie, photo, contacts, notes has not been working properly at all. Please help! thanks

i downloaded the Mavs about 2 days ago. it restarted automatically as it stated... i have not really used it again until tonight. and boy was i so ******!
after downloading the new OS update, the list below stopped and wont work properly:
    Contacts
    iPhoto
    iMovie
    Notes
if theres anyone who can help me downgrade it back to Mountain Lion, id GREATLYYY appreciate it a lot.
    Thanks!

You don't need to downgrade. If it worked in Mountain Lion it will work in Mavericks. Do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • HT1338 Yesterday, I purchased Mountain Lion OSX and tried to download it but I don't think it worked.  How can I tell if I am using Mountain Lion and how do I get help if the download was unsuccessful?

Yesterday, I purchased Mountain Lion OSX and tried to download it but I don't think the download worked.  How can I tell if I am using Mountain Lion and how do I get help if the download was unsuccessful?

Click your Apple menu icon top left corner of your screen.
From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
If Mountain Lion is installed, it will say:  v10.8
If not, launch the App Store. From the App Store menu bar click Store > Check for Unfinished Downloads
FYI ..  for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.

  • How can I make a bootable disk for Mountain Lion?

How can I make a bootable disk for Mountain Lion?

    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I have an older MacBook Pro that I'm selling. I upgraded to Mounbtain Lion, but there was not an option to do a clean install (wiping everything clean and starting fresh). I want to do this to make sure all of my data is removed before I sell it. How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion in order to accomplish this? In the past, from DVDs, it was easy. Thanks!

    Budrew wrote:
Sure, but I would imagine that it will be common for people to sell their Macs with upgraded OSs.
That was only OK when you bought the Upgrade DVD and included both the original system discs and the disc you used to upgrade the OS.
Since Apple has now gone to the Download only model of OS X you now always need to install the Original OS or an Upgraded version that you have the DVD disc for.
If a Mac came with Leopard and you upgraded to Snow Leopard and then to Lion or Mt Lion you must remove Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall either Leopard or Snow Leopard and include all the discs for that system, Originals and the Upgrde Snow Leopard DVD.
If your system came Snow Leopard and you installed Lion or Mt Lion thenn again you remoeve Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard and include the original discs that came with the system
If your system came with Lion and you upgraded to Mt Lion then you remove Mt Lion and reinstall Lion.
The reason for all of that is because with the Download only OS all upgrades are TIED to YOUR Apple ID, not to the computer. So the new owner can not reinstall Lion or Mt Lion, whichever you upgraded to, without using your Apple ID.
