Can you Cluster MACs at home?

Can you cluster Mac computers at home so they all use the same account/user information, and share all locally mounted volumes using somthing like Mass Storage Control Protocol?
I have Tiger version 10.4.10
Power Mac Dual G5
iMac G5
Mac Mini G5
and soon to be added 24" core 2 duo iMac
I also have a Black Mac Book Core duo, but it would not be a member of the cluster.
If this is not possible, will it be possible in Leapord?
Thank you in advance.

Mac OS X support the Unix Network File System (NFS). However, it leaves out
the GUI.
NFS Manager is a small tool for easy access to the NFS features of Mac OS X. As an operating system with a Unix core, Mac OS X is able to support the Network File System (NFS) protocol. NFS is the accepted industry standard for sharing files between Unix systems.
http://www.bresink.com/osx/NFSManager.html
This page show you how to use NetInfo Manager:
http://mactechnotes.blogspot.com/2005/09/mac-os-x-as-nfs-server.html#c1168221713 40271068
Once you figure out how NFS Manager configures the NFS shares, you can
use Applications > Utilities > NetInfo Manager to create more shares.
You will either have to coordinate Unix Userid number and Unix Group Id number or use the mapall option on the share.
To find out your Mac OS X userid and group id do:
applications > utilities > terminal
ls -ln
ls -l
# lists the NFS share on your mac
showmount -e localhost
#list NFS shares on a remote host
showmount -e remote-ip-address
Once you see what NFS Manager does, you will be able to use NetInfo Manager to manage a connection. In Mac OS 10.4 you can configure the /etc/exports control file. See man exports for the details. Before that you had to have the data in NetInfo manager. When Mac OS X came out, many common Unix control files were not present. Instead the data had to be in NetInfo manager. Over time Apple has added more and more standard Unix control files.
===============================================================
It's best to have common uid's and gid's.
This is tricky stuff.
You need to change these things:
1) Your account information
2) All of your files & folders
One way to change what uid and gid are defined for your account is theNetInfo Manager application. This doesn't change the UID & GID on your files and folders.
Mac OS X ... harddrive -> Applications -> Utilities -> NetInfo Manager
In the middle column is the function. Pick users then select your user. Click on the lock at the bottom of the panel. Go into the property list and change UID and GID."
sudo find -x / -user 501 -exec chown 5464 {} \;
sudo find -x / -group 20 -exec chgrp 211 {} \;
There are two generally used schemes for assigning a group to a user:
1) Assign all users to a common group like staff.
2) Assign each user to their own group. A user like test would be in group test.
Mac OS uses method 1 in 10.2 and method 2 in 10.4.
You should not have multiple users assigned to the same uid. My worry is that if you are only change in the 50x range, you could run into a conflict.
Your best bet is to change to a high number like 5464 on all of your accounts.
On Mac OS, there are a few files that have the old uid as part of their names. The .Trashes file will be on your removal media and maybe everywhere.
/.Trashes/501
/Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache.501
/Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache.sbdl.501
/Library/Caches/com.apple.user501pictureCache.tiff
Here are some terminal commands:
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
cd /Applications
Your current user is:
echo $USER
Let's assume myuser
To find out your UID and GID do:
cd ~
ls -ln
ls -l
Or, you can use the id command.
id
compare the output and write down what you find.
You best use the numeric value for your userid. In this case it is 500. To list all the files owned by a userid do:
sudo find / -user 500 -exec ls {} \;
#And you need to do this from an administrator id.
/* adding a -x before the / limits the search to the current file system. *
# To stop the display press control-c
sudo find -x / -user 501 -exec chown 5464 {} \;
#And you need to do this from an administrator id.
Hope this helps a little.
Robert
PS. This is a lot, but I hope it helps.

  • What can you do if your home button, lock button and assistive touch button no longer work?

    My lock button stopped working so i activated the assisted touch, then all of a sudden my assisted touch stopped working and so did my home button. The screenshot and gestures works on the assisted touch but if i press for it to lock or go back to home it does not work. Also if i hold my home button i can get the voice control up, but it just doesn't go back to my home screen. Is there a way to fix this?

    Even if they don't seem to work, this will probably work:
    hold the HomeButton and the PowerButton pressed at the same time, keep holding, ignore everything on the screen, keep holding, when you see the white Apple logo let go and wait until the iPhone has started completely.

  • Can you put Mac OS X on a Windows PC

    I was wondering becuase if you can put WINDOWS XP on a Mac, then can u it be the other way around?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Please read the license agreement that came with Mac OS X. It only allows you to install on an Apple Macintosh. If there was a method to install Mac OS X on an Intel PC like a Dell or HP, we couldn't tell you how on this board, as Terms of Use strictly prohibit potentially illegal discussion.
    Furthermore, installing on a PC, you don't get the great software/hardware integration Apple has developed with its software (no other PC maker makes its own operating system), and Apple uses a different Boot ROM, that even Microsoft professes it won't have support for in Vista. Though some Virtualization solutions have managed to run the Vista betas on the new Intel Macs.
    Any upgrades to Mac OS X may have further changes in drivers that the PC maker would not have anticipated, thus making any installation you try on a PC only temporarily work if at all.
    Macs that can run XP start at only $600 new. And used and refurbished ones cost less. I've listed many of the possible solutions to run XP on a Mac here:

    iMovie HD (free version 6.0.4 available to iLife '08 owners from Apple) and GarageBand can chapter can chapter movies. (iTunes, iPod, iPhone, TV, QT Player, and Front Row can all use these chapters.) However, iMovie '08 itself cannot add chapters. If your clips don't need any editing, simply create/add them to a GarageBand iPod project, chapter them, and export them using the "Export Movie to Disk... > Full Quality" Share menu option. This work flow does not re-compress your video content, but merely places it, the audio, and the chapter text track in an MOV file container for use.

  • Can you guys fix my home button ? Its stuck , how much do I have to payy?

    Its it possible for you guys to fix the home botton of my ipod touch? . And if its possible how much will it cost.

    Apple doesn't repair it.  If there is no sign of abuse (don't try to fix it yourself), they replace it with a refurbished unit.  The fixed-price for non-warranty replacements can be found here.

  • Can you cluster two nodes from subnet A with the cluster itself residing in subnet B?

    We have a situation in a cloud deployment where the servers are automatically provisioned through a cloud portal with IP addressed from subnet A. Because we require static IP for clustering, the static IP can only be provisioned from subnet B for
    use by the cluster.  Is it possible to create a cluster from the two nodes in subnet A from a cluster IP in subnet B?  I cannot find any mention of this particular network configuration for a Windows cluster.  We are using the cluster to support
    SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups.

    Hi Sir,
    >>the servers are automatically provisioned through a cloud portal with IP addressed from subnet A.
    Did you try to create a new VM then give it an static IP from subnet B then check if the VM can be accessed from outside ?

  • Sharing an external USB hard rive - can you boot Mac and Windows?

    I'm using an external USB2 hard drive (Western Digital 250 Gb) to back up my MacBook and a couple of Dell laptops. It's formatted FAT32, so both OSes work fine with it, and I think the Dells can boot from it. It's fine for backing up files, although SuperDuper turns up its nose because it's not HFS+.
    I've learned from these forums that an Intel Mac can boot from a USB drive but only if it's formatted properly, not FAT32. I think you need a GUID partition map and HFS+ formatting.
    So, is there ANY way I could use this drive as a bootable backup for BOTH a MacBook and a Dell (Windows XP) laptop? I've looked around a lot, and I think it cannot be done. Anyone know otherwise?

    Yes, no question about that.
    What I was wondering is if there might be any partitioning and formatting strategy whereby there could be a "Mac" partition and a "Windows" partition, so that either machine could boot from the same external (USB) drive.
    Obviously, Apple has achieved dual-boot with BootCamp for internal drives but I can't find any comparable solution for external drives.

  • Can you cluster Coherence over data centers?

    We're currently running two separate Coherence clusters in different data centers. One is prod, the other DR.
    Would it be possible to cluster the nodes from each of these to create one cluster spanning both data centers? Then in a failover scenario the data would already be available.
    I know Coherence nodes heartbeat to one another to retain cluster membership and that there is a TTL setting to determine packet life. Would have nodes in different data centers result in heartbeats being missed or TTLs killing packets?
    Has anyone had any success with this?

    Coherence performance is related to the latency between nodes. Having one cluster spread over 2 data centers could harm performance (some timeouts could have to be changed to prevent nodes from data center A to claim another node in datacenter B is out of reach/possibly dead).
    When you lose network connectivity between the 2 data centers (note i'm not saying "if you lose connectivity". It WILL happen), you're welcome into the "split brain world", each half of the grid believing the other is dead and claiming to be the "master". And thus, if you have data replicated on N nodes, the master/backups are redispatched all over each datacenter, harming performance for a few minutes (the timing depending of course on many parameters...). And of course the data will no longer be synchronized between the 2 data centers. The quorum has to be thought of, and stuff like that...
    I might be wrong, but AFAIK I'd rather have 2 separate clusters. I believe 12.1 has new features to replicate data the the master grid to the DR one, I have not been through all the new documentation.

  • How can you install Mac OS X Lion on a new, empty hard drive?

    If the only way to install Mac OS X Lion is by downloading it via the Mac App Store, it's going to be very difficult to put it on a brand-new hard drive unless Apple provides us with workarounds,So what should we do when want to install Mac OSX Lion on new HD?
    ThanQ

    What you get from the Mac App Store will be an Installer Application. You will be able to transfer that Installer from Mac to Mac. I have not seen it yet, but we may also be able to burn an installer disk, we shall have to see just how things work.
    Apple has always been known as an innovative company. And when they announce something new folks always go nuts with reasons that this cannot work. When Apple stopped making Macs with floppy drives and iMacs only had optical drives, people went crazy. Today no one makes computers with floppy drives.
