Cancel() method in "Timer" class

Hi there,
I'm just a bit wondering what's the problem with the following code. if i comment out the t.cancel() method, the program will print out "OK!". but if i don't comment it out, the program will print out nothing, although it compiles perfectly. by the way, i can't tell the difference between putting t.cancel() there and putting it within "public void run()" and after that "system.out.println("OK!");" method. I think t.cancel() can be called in any place in the program.
any comments will be very much appreciated.

import java.util.*;
public class Thread1
     private Timer t;
     public Thread1()
          t = new Timer();
          t.schedule(new Task(), 4000);
//          t.schedule(new Task(), 2000);
          t.cancel();
     private class Task extends TimerTask
          public void run()
               System.out.println("OK!");
     public static void main(String[] args)
          System.out.println("This program is to test how threads work...");
          new Thread1();

What you describe is exactly what I would expect that would happen. By calling cancel() on the timer, you discard any scheduled tasks, so your Task.run() will never be executed and you will not see the "OK!". Note that the call to schedule() returns immediately. It doesn't wait until the task will execute.
Your question is not very clear. What do you want to know specifically about the behaviour of your program? What did you expect it to do and what is the difference between what it really does and what you expected?

  • Print methods of a class at run-time

    Suppose I have a class. At run-time I get an object of that class. I want to print methods defined in that object using System.out.println(). How can I do that?
    Thanks

    Take a look at Object.getClass(). It returns a Class object. Then look at the methods within the Class class that you can invoke. Some of them return arrays of Method objects, for instance.
    Learn to read the API and experiment with the available methods you already have (such as getClass(), available for every object).

  • Issue with CHECK_CHANGED_DATA  method of CL_GUI_ALV_GRID class

    HI,
    I want to check whether my grid has any changes or not, for that i am using the CHECK_CHANGED_DATA method of CL_GUI_ALV_GRID class,
    What i am doing is.... I am doing some changes in my grid data  and clicking on SAVE . This time  CHECK_CHANGED_DATA is saying the grid have changes ,and i am displaying a pop up whether to save the changes or not. And i am saving changes.
    Till now Fine.
    If i click on SAVE again CHECK_CHANGED_DATA is showing again the Grid has changes.
    So how can i solve this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Narendra
    If you do not need to do any validations of the changed ALV list data then you can use a very simple approach which does not even require an event handler for event DATA_CHANGED.
    The crucial part of the coding is shown below, followed by the entire sample report ZUS_SDN_ALV_EDITABLE_1A. Basically, the ALV list is stored as a "PBO" image of the data (GT_OUTTAB_PBO). And only if the user changed the data (i.e. GT_OUTTAB_PBO <> GT_OUTTAB) the save option including the popup is executed.

  • Moving a method from one class to another issues

    Hi, im new. Let me explain what i am trying to achieve. I am basically trying to move a method from one class to another in order to refactor the code. However every time i do, the program stops working and i am struggling. I have literally tried 30 times these last two days. Can some one help please? If shown once i should be ok, i pick up quickly.
    Help would seriously be appreciated.

  • Calling a non-static method from another Class

    Hello forum experts:
    Please excuse me for my poor Java vocabulary. I am a newbie and requesting for help. So please bear with me! I am listing below the program flow to enable the experts understand the problem and guide me towards a solution.
    1. ClassA instantiates ClassB to create an object instance, say ObjB1 that
        populates a JTable.
    2. User selects a row in the table and then clicks a button on the icon toolbar

    3. This user action is to invoke a method UpdateDatabase() of object ObjB1. Now I want to call this method from UIMenu class.
    (a). I could create a new instance ObjB2 of ClassB and call UpdateDatabase(),
                                      == OR ==
    (b). I could declare UpdateDatabase() as static and call this method without
         creating a new instance of ClassB.With option (a), I will be looking at two different object instances.The UpdateDatabase() method manipulates
    object specific data.
    With option (b), if I declare the method as static, the variables used in the method would also have to be static.
    The variables, in which case, would not be object specific.
    Is there a way or technique in Java that will allow me to reference the UpdateDatabase() method of the existing
    object ObjB1 without requiring me to use static variables? In other words, call non-static methods in a static
    way?
    Any ideas or thoughts will be of tremendous help. Thanks in advance.

    Hello Forum:
    Danny_From_Tower, Encephalatic: Thank you both for your responses.
    Here is what I have done so far. I have a button called "btnAccept" created in the class MyMenu.
    and declared as public.
    public class MyMenu {
        public JButton btnAccept;
         //Constructor
         public MyMenu()     {
              btnAccept = new JButton("Accept");
    }     I instantiate an object for MyMenu class in the main application class MyApp.
    public class MyApp {
         private     MyMenu menu;
         //Constructor
         public MyApp(){
              menu = new MyMenu();
         public void openOrder(){
               MyGUI MyIntFrame = new MyGUI(menu.btnAccept);
    }I pass this button all the way down to the class detail02. Now I want to set up a listener for this
    button in the class detail02. I am not able to do this.
    public class MyGUI {
         private JButton acceptButton;
         private detail02 dtl1 = new detail02(acceptButton);
         //Constructor
         public AppGUI(JButton iButton){
         acceptButton = iButton;
    public class detail02{
        private JButton acceptButton;
        //Constructor
        public detail02(JButton iButton){
          acceptButton = iButton;
          acceptButton.addActionListener(new acceptListener());
       //method
        private void acceptListener_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
           System.out.println("Menu item [" + e.getActionCommand(  ) + "] was pressed.");
        class acceptListener implements ActionListener {
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                   acceptListener_actionPerformed(e);
    }  I am not able to get the button Listener to work. I get NullPointerException at this line
              acceptButton.addActionListener(new acceptListener());in the class detail02.
    Is this the right way? Or is there a better way of accomplishing my objective?
    Please help. Your inputs are precious! Thank you very much for your time!

  • Problem using repaint() method from another class

    I am trying to make tower of hanoi...but unable to transfer rings from a tower to another...i had made three classes....layout21 where all componentents of frame assembled and provided suitable actionlistener.....second is mainPanel which is used to draw the rods n rings in paintComponent.....and third is tower in which code for hanoi is available...i had made an object of mainPanel at layoout21 n tower but i m not able to call repaint from tower..gives an error : cannot find the symbol....method repaint in tower.

    why i m not able to use repaint() method in tower class? from where i can use repaint() method

    i can't read your code - not formatted with code tags
    I have no chance of getting it to compile (AboutDialog class?? p.draw() ??)
    here's a basic routine - add a couple of things to this to demonstrate what is not
    being redrawn
    (compare the readability of below code (using tags) to yours)
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    class Testing extends JFrame
      public Testing()
        setSize(400,300);
        setLocation(400,300);
        setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        final DrawPanel dp = new DrawPanel();
        JButton btn = new JButton("Change Text Location/Repaint");
        getContentPane().add(dp,BorderLayout.CENTER);
        getContentPane().add(btn,BorderLayout.SOUTH);
        btn.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){
          public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae){
            dp.x = (int)(Math.random()*300);
            dp.y = (int)(Math.random()*150)+50;
            repaint();}});
      public static void main(String[] args){new Testing().setVisible(true);}
    class DrawPanel extends JPanel
      int x = 50, y = 50;
      public void paintComponent(Graphics g)
        super.paintComponent(g);
        g.drawString("Hello World",x,y);
    }

  • To access a method frm a class derived frm a base class with the same name

    Here' s an example:-
    class TestA {
    public void start() {
    System.out.println("TestA");
    class TestB extends TestA {
    public void start() {
    System.out.println("TestB");
    }In main method I do this:-
    TestA testA = new TestA();
    TestB testB = new TestB();
    ((TestA)testB).start();Output :-
    TestB.
    Now when i define the method as static :-
    class TestA {
    public static void start() {
    System.out.println("TestA");
    class TestB extends TestA {
    public static void start() {
    System.out.println("TestB");
    }Then output is :-
    TestA.
    Can anyone let me know that when i say ((TestA)testB).start(); i.e i am type casting TestB obect to it base call then TestA should be printed but it doesn't print but when i declare method as static is does print TestA.
    Thanks,

    Secondly, when i say ((TestA).testB).start(); output is TestB. But when i define start() method as static output is TestA. I need clarity for the same.In the static case, all that the compiler is interested in is the class of the expression before the ".". Because you've put in an explicit cast the type of expression is assumed to be TestA the compiler doesn't know what kind of object will actually be referenced at runtime. In the static case which method is called is determined at compile time.
    In the instance method case what determines the method called is determined the class of the actual, run time, value of the expression, and despite your cast, the actual value is still a reference to a TestB instance, so the TestB method is called. In the instance case which method called is determined at run time.

  • Problems calling a method in another class

    I have the following method in a class called recordCalls -
    public static void objectCreated(String type, String name)
            System.out.println("An object of type " + type + " called " + name + " has been created.");
    //       addObjectToPanel(type, name);
        }I am attempting to call addObjectToPanel(type, name) which is a method inside a class called test.
    I do not want to create an instance of test an call it like test.addObjectToPanel(type, name)
    Is there any other way of doing this.
    Thanks.

    You either have to make the method static, and call
    test.addObjectToPanel or you have to create an
    instance of test and invoke the method on that
    instance.
    I don't know what that class is supposed to do, so I
    don't know which is more appropriate.
    You should name your classes starting with capital
    letters, and Test is a very undescriptive (and hence
    bad) name for that class.I will be chaning the names of everything when the class works.
    Test contains the UI for my program.
    When I run test then my UI is runing, once I run addObjectToPanel from the record calls class it should put images into my UI,
    the problem is that each time the method is run it open up a different UI and adds an image to it instead of just adding the images to the window which is already open.

  • Timer Class in jsdk 1.4 w2000 doesn't compile

    Since this is based in the tutorial, shouldn't be a big deal but I spent the whole day looking for a solution. Please help!
    The tutorial presents this program:
    //1.3
    import java.util.timer;
    public class Problem {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    final Timer timer = new Timer();
    timer.schedule(new TimerTask(), 5000);
    System.out.println("In 5 seconds this application will exit. ");
         public class TimerTask implements Timer {
    public void run() {
    System.out.println("Exiting.");
    timer.cancel();
    My problem starts because java.util doesn't have the timer class:
    Problem.java:2: Class java.util.timer not found in import.
    import java.util.timer;
    ^
    Now, JSDK 1.4 doesn't have timer as a package, but as a class, nevertheless, the instruction:
    import java.util.*; // instead of java.util.Timer
    doesn't compile because
    Problem.java:10: Interface Timer of inner class Problem. TimerTask not found.
    Problem.java:6: Class Timer not found in type declaration.
    I think Timer should be expressed as abstract, but how?
    I'm new in Java and feel a little frustrated...

    >
    ProblemSolved.java:3: Class java.util.Timer not found
    in import.
    import java.util.Timer;
    ^
    1 error
    Then you are not using java 1.3. You are using something before that.
    for the Timer and
    javac IteratorDemo.javaIteratorDemo.java:1: Interface java.util.Iterator of
    class IteratorDemo not foun
    d.
    public class IteratorDemo implements
    java.util.Iterator {
    ^
    1 error
    And this suggests that you are using something before 1.2.
    Just a thought...
    Windows comes with the MS version of java, which matches something like 1.1.6. It is in the path. So does you path put the jdk path first or last?

  • Calling main method of a class

    Hi
    I have to call the Main method of a class in some other class becuass that class is accepting command line aurguments.
    I test it and everything is working fine.

    Muhammad Umer wrote:
    Good Explanation. But my question is not to explain the importance of main method in classes :)As far as the Java language and APIs go, there's nothing wrong with calling main just like any other method, because it is just another method. It's only special to the JVM, and to programmers who assume that it's the entry point to the program.
    As far as Java is concerned, you can call as many mains as you want. The only potential problem arises if some particular main is written in a way that relies on it being the entry point to the whole program. That is, if the author wrote it with the assumption that it would only be called by the JVM at startup time, and would not be called arbitrarily from within your code (EDIT: and if proper behavior relies on that assumption being upheld). However, this is just a particular case of a general issue that we always have to be aware of, namely, make sure you understand how a method is intended to be used, and use it in that fashion, or accept the consequences.
    EDIT: However, having said that, it's unusual to call main explicitly, so if you can, I would suggest pulling the functionality that you want out of that main into a different method, and then both your code and the main can call that method. If you cannot do that, then at the point where you call main, clearly document why you're doing it. Otherwise, whoever reads the code a few months or years from now--maybe somebody else, maybe you--will be wondering if the programmer really knew what he was doing, or if that is a mistake. That kind of second-guessing is the source of a lot of maintenance nightmares.

  • Where can I find the detail document about certain method of a class?????

    Moved to correct forum by moderator
    Hi everyone,
    where can I find the detail document about certain method of a class?????
    e.g.  the class CL_GUI_ALV_GRID , when I was going through the class and looking
    at the methods, sometimes the method description is just like the method name,
    and I cannot know what the method does.
      so, I am wondering  where I can find the detail information about the class???

    Hi,
    Most of the times the SAP itself provides the documentaion of the CLASS. when you click on the METHOD name the METHOD DOCUMENTATION button you can see on the application tool bar.
    more over the names of the methods suggest what it is going to do.
    SET_ATTRIBUTE( sets the attribute)
    GET_ATTRIBUTE( gets the attribute value that is provided to the method)
    GET_CHILDNODE
    BIND_TABLE
    etc
    like this

  • Best way to design methods in a class.  Pass parameters or use members?

    Say I have a class.

        private TimeSeriesCollection ouncesCollection = new TimeSeriesCollection();
        private TimeSeries ouncesSeries = new TimeSeries("Oz. Film/Pallet");
        private NumberAxis ouncesAxis = new NumberAxis("Oz.");
        private XYItemRenderer ouncesRenderer;
      private XYPlot plot;
        private final int pkgLineId;
        private final int wrapSpecId;
        private final Date dateBegin;
        private final Date dateEnd;
        private final long millisApart;
        private final WrapSpec wrapSpec;
        public AvgOuncesChart(XYPlot plot, int pkgLineId, int wrapSpecId, Date dateBegin, Date dateEnd, WrapSpec wrapSpec, long millisApart) {
            this.plot = plot;
            this.pkgLineId = pkgLineId;
            this.wrapSpecId = wrapSpecId;
            this.dateBegin = new Date(dateBegin.getTime());
            this.dateEnd = new Date(dateEnd.getTime());
            this.millisApart = millisApart;
            this.wrapSpec = wrapSpec;
            log.info("AvgOuncesChart contructor called...");
    getAvg();
    getOunce();
    private void getAvg() {
        plot.doSomething(pkgLineId);
    private void getOunce() {
        plot.doSomething(wrapSpecId);
    }Is it better to just pass the parameters I need initially into the constructor and then set them as members.
    Or pass them into every method of the class every time I need them.
    public final class AvgOuncesChart extends Base {
        private TimeSeriesCollection ouncesCollection = new TimeSeriesCollection();
        private TimeSeries ouncesSeries = new TimeSeries("Oz. Film/Pallet");
        private NumberAxis ouncesAxis = new NumberAxis("Oz.");
        private XYItemRenderer ouncesRenderer;
        public AvgOuncesChart(XYPlot plot, int pkgLineId, int wrapSpecId, Date dateBegin, Date dateEnd, WrapSpec wrapSpec, long millisApart) {
            log.info("AvgOuncesChart contructor called...");
    getAvg(pkgLineId, wrapSpecId, dateBegin, dateEnd);
    getOunce(wrapSpecId);
    private void getAvg(int pkgLineId, int wrapSpecId, Date dateBegin, Date dateEnd) {
        plot.doSomething(pkgLineId);
    plot.setDate(dateEnd);
    plot.doSomethingElse(wrapSpecId);
    private void getOunce(int wrapSpecId) {
        plot.doSomething(wrapSpecId);
    }I heard the second way is better because then you can tell from the code what the method is going to use and possibly modify. I'm not to sure on this though.

  • Methods in a class

    When you add more methods to a class does it increase the amount of memory the Object uses idle, or does it increase the creation time of an object?
    I'm talking around 6000 lines of code, and i was just wondering if it would be better to add all related method inside the class or to make a static class that takes one of the objects as an argument and performs the actions on it.
    Thanks.

    Peter__Lawrey wrote:
    Ok, the class is stored as one file and loading the class causes it to be unpacked (if required) and validated.
    However, if you have a corrupt method, (and I have written a few with ASM) that corruption won't be detected until you call the method. e.g. illegal instructions.
    The points is some loading occurs when the class is first used, but there is additional work which occurs when the method is called for the first time. I suspect the later is more significant for a larger method.Well, but that's not really performance-relevant. What you mean sounds to me like a simple run-time failure during the actual execution of the method. The statements were loaded but not executed, hence the fault remains unnoticed. It doesn't sound to me like there's any loading or verification work prior to invoking a method the first time (and it also wouldn't matter with regards to the overall amount of methods in a class), but then, I never implemented a JVM.

  • What types of sort performed by sort method of Array class ?

    I use normal bubble sort and method Array.sort() to sort some given data of an Array and then count the time.But Array.sort() method takes more time then normal bubble sort.
    Can anybody tell me what types of sort performed by sort method of Array class?

    I'm pretty sure that in eariler versions (1.2, 1.3
    maybe?) List.sort's docs said it used quicksort. Or I
    might be on crack.You are actually both correct, and wrong :)
    From the documentation of the sort methods hasn't changed in 1.2 -> 1.4 (as far as I can notice), and the documentation for sort(Object[]) says (taken from JDK 1.2 docs):
    "This sort is guaranteed to be stable: equal elements will not be reordered as a result of the sort.
    The sorting algorithm is a modified mergesort (in which the merge is omitted if the highest element in the low sublist is less than the lowest element in the high sublist). This algorithm offers guaranteed n*log(n) performance, and can approach linear performance on nearly sorted lists."
    So, how could you be correct? The documentation for e.g. sort(int[]) (and all other primities) says:
    "Sorts the specified array of ints into ascending numerical order. The sorting algorithm is a tuned quicksort, adapted from Jon L. Bentley and M. Douglas McIlroy's "Engineering a Sort Function", Software-Practice and Experience, Vol. 23(11) P. 1249-1265 (November 1993). This algorithm offers n*log(n) performance on many data sets that cause other quicksorts to degrade to quadratic performance."
    Your memory serves you well :)
