  • Snow Leopard Install problems on Macbook Pro with bad optical drive

I've tried this (refer to article below) to install Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro with a bad optical drive, but I am not able to choose a wi-fi network, or install disk after startup. Is there something else I need to do?
To use Remote Install Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server:
Insert the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server Install Disc into the optical disc drive of the other computer.
If the other computer is a Mac, open /Applications/Utilities/Remote Install Mac OS X. On Windows, choose "Remote Install Mac OS X" from the Install Assistant.
Read the introduction and click Continue.
Choose the install disc you want to use, and click Continue.
Choose a network connection: AirPort, if you are using an AirPort network, or Ethernet, if the other computer is on an Ethernet network and you have an optional Apple USB Ethernet Adapter connecting your MacBook Air or Mac mini to the same network. Click Continue.
Restart your MacBook Air or Mac mini and hold down the Option key as it starts up, until you see a list of available startup disks.
Click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, on your MacBook Air or Mac mini choose your AirPort network from the pop-up list.
If the network is secure, you will be prompted for a password. You can enter a private network name by choosing the ellipsis (...) and typing the name.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, when you see the AirPort status icon indicating signal strength, click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
You can now reinstall software, reset your password or run Disk Utility using instructions from the User's Guide.

Are you able to connect the two via Firewire cable? If so you can boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode. Then boot the other computer from the OS X installer disc. The installer should detect the hard drive of the MBP as an eligible target destination.
If you have a spare hard drive or at least 10 GBs of usable space on an external drive, then you can create a small 8 GB partition on that drive. Then clone the installer DVD to that partition using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can then boot the MBP from that partition using OPTION boot: Start the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the cloned DVD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external partition.
Source means the OS X Installer DVD.

  • I have Windows 8.1 installed on my Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) and it keeps on crashing with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD error

I have Windows 8.1 installed on my Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) and it keeps on crashing with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD error. Is this an issue with the bootcamp driver not compatible with Windows 8.1? or is there something I can do to fix this.
I also keep getting WHEA-Logger Event-ID 19 warning events in the Windows Event Logs with the following details.
A corrected hardware error has occurred.
    Reported by component: Processor Core
    Error Source: Corrected Machine Check
    Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
    Processor APIC ID: 3
The details view of this entry contains further information.

likely win8.1 dont have official bootcamp support yet
1/3 of my logins into win8.1 result in a fatal bluescreen
was the same deal when I installed win8 before official support
and when the drivers with official support was released the issue went away

The download wouldn't have occurred if Software update detected he had 10.6
It installed and rebooted three times, sot it's obvious it was intentional.
Usually firmware updates are for the hardware itself to fix things and to prepare for features of the next operating system.
You see, I have it too and I'm on 10.6.8 with a Early 2011, the reason I haven't installed it is because it's been constantly changing and causing people issues like this fellow.
    EFI 2.1, then 2.2, then 2.3 and now it's 2.7? LOL

  • Cant install OS on Macbook Pro

Hello, Im trying to install Mac Os X from my internal optical drive on a new harddrive (formatted mac os journaled) and it doesn't seem to work. I tried both Snow leopard dvd and lion. Then I tried both dvd's with an external optical drive and same problem, stops spinning after few minutes the dvd that is. So I thought it might be that the harddrive is the problem(1 TB samsung) so removed it and installed the hitachi one that came with my macbook pro mid 2009, same issue. I tried everything even changing the ram from 8 GB to the 4 GB that came with my macbook pro. Help will be much appreciated as im trying to sell it ASAP, I really need the money. Thanks in advance.

Amazon may not have the correct drive for you, as it may need a firmware patch.  http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.mcetech.com/ are the only ones that have known fully compatible drives with Macs on the optical front.  http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ can tell you what might be needed for other drives, and it varies.

  • Macbook Pro Retina corrupting hard drives?

I work off a Macbook Pro Retina and G-Technology hard drives. I've been editing Sony 4K raw footage filmed on the Sony FS-700. I have noticed that when I am working with this footage on this computer and try to run other apps the computer will freeze and/or just shut down abruptly. Bringing the computer back on after this shut down has killed some of my hard drives. The computer won't even recognize them. I can only see them on the disk utility and was able to reformat most of the drives I've lost. One was unrepairable.
I've worked with these drives for years and have never had these issues. I've contacted them and they suggested I contact Apple. Sony in talking to their customers service suggested the same. This is after hours on the phone with both going through setup and video editing workflow. I do not have this issue on my iMac at home or another iMac at work. It only occurs with this laptop.
This is really frustrating as I've lost tons of data. Good thing I back up.
I don't know if this can be solved but really wanted to bring this to someone's attention.
I have a 15inch MCB Pro retina and have 2 thunderbolt displays.
Are the displays drawing too much power and killing my drives? Simplistic but my renders go faster or actually go when those displays are not connected.

There are two things you could do:
Turn your Aperture Library into a referenced library and relocate the master image files to your external drive. You will be able to browse, grade, and tag your images even if the external drive is not connected, but you can only edit those images whose masters are managed. Sp perhaps you could keep the masters of the most recent projects managed. while you are on the road import the new images into the library and relocate them to your external drive when you get back.
To relocate to an external drive: Select the images and use
    File -> Relocate Masters
What I sometimes do when on vacation: create a new, second Aperture Library on my travel MacBook Pro and import my new pictures from the trip into this library. When I return I import the new Library from the trip into my main Aperture LIbraryFile -> Import -> Library/Project

  • Macbook Pro Retina won't drive HDMI out

So I was talked into the new MacBook Pro Retina in place of a new Mac Pro by the guys at the Apple store.  I told them I needed to drive 4 displays and they assured me the MBPr would do that.  2 from mini display ports.  1 from HDMI and it's own display.  Fair enough.
Only, the HDMI out seems dead.  I am running two Dell monitors on the mini display to DVI connectors.  I am trying to run a 3rd Dell monitor on HDMI to Disply port but am getting no signal.  None.  Nada.  After a few seconds the monitor tells me there is no signal from the computer and it shuts down.
I have seen a lot of other issues around the HDMI output.  Anyone know the status?  Has Apple bugged this?  Is there a fix in the works?
    Thanks!
    Charles

Try with just the HDMI external; display. I would suspect the HDMO cable if this test does not work. Tray a new HDMI cable. If the new cable does not work, take the computer to an authorized service center. There is no "bug" using HDMI to an external monitor.

  • Is it possible to get a 1TB hard drive installed into my Macbook Pro Retina?

I am a photographer and I have a lot of photos and its hard to store them all.  I have a back up drive I currently have my iPhoto library on, but it crashes a lot.
Can I get an internal drive installed? How much does this cost?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The MacBook Pro with Retina display can only use flash storage because a hard disk doesn't fit onto this computer. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to store the photos onto an external disk, if they doesn't fit onto your flash storage.
If your external disk is slow, you may want to buy a Thunderbolt external disk. It's much faster than a USB external disk and you shouldn't notice any problem anymore with it

  • Mavericks refuses to install on my macbook pro retina

I have purchesed a new macbook pro with retina display (late 2013) that came with Mavericks pre installed.
Now when I try to boot from a USB Key with OS X 10.9.1 installer on it my mac refuses to boot from the USB Key. If I double clic the installer icon there's a message saying that "OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer."(!?)
Even when I try to download it from the app store I receive the same message.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for any help.

I understand your reasoning;however, this is what Apple has apparently decided, so there isn't anything we can do about it. When Lion first was introduced, you were able to download the installer and then save a copy of it somewhere. This is no longer possible now with the new Macs/new OS - when you invoke recovery and download the OS, there is no way to save that installer as the download/install sequence is one process now and there is no way to save the installer as it deletes itself after the install.
Aside from that issue, new Macs have not been able to use the app store or software update version on thei Macs because of their special builds until one or two updates later when the updates "caught up" with the new Mac's OS build version.
As you can see here, a Mac might have come with different OS versions as well as different builds of the same version:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
Personally, I've decided to keep a "fresh install" bootable clone as an emergency measure (which I do not update purposely so it remains "factory fresh") in addition to my regular clones which are updated regularly. That eliminates the need for a download in order to reinstall.

  • Install Aperture on MacBook Pro Retina

    Hello,
I just unboxed brand new MacBook Pro 13'' with Retina and trying to install Aperture...
Recent Aperture from AppStore requires 10.8.2
MacBook came with 10.8.1, If I am trying to install OS Mountain Lion (10.8.2) from the store it complains:
"We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer."
    What is wrong here!?
    - Dmitry

Apple Menu, Software-Update does the same thing. It's tied to the MAS now.
An advantage with Apple is it doesn't FORCE you to download updates when you don't want it to, then FORCE you again into a sudden reboot with no way to avoid it, costing you to lose so much work and headaches.

  • I cant install Yosemite on Macbook Pro

We have a 3 yr old MacBook Pro.  A few weeks ago it stopped working, nothing, everything would freeze and the pinwheel would spin and spin.We took it to Apple and they spent an hour running diagnostics. "Oh its fine, its your home wi-fi network"  So we downloaded Yosemite there and took it home.  I just went to install Yo. and it wont work, NOTHING opens, it freezes up.

  • Does the new MacBook Pro have an optical drive?

Quick, easy question - does the new MacBook Pro come with an optical drive? Or does one have to purchase an external optical drive if one wants one?

Depends on which one you buy. The Retina models do not and if you need one, have to purchase the external SuperDrive for an additional cost. The other non-Retina models, 13" and 15", do come with an internal slot-loading SuperDrive. There are, as yet, no more 17" models and no announcement whether they will be released later.
