Carriage returns changed to soft returns

Hi all,
I have a microsoft word document that's been written in "single spacing", or what I think is single spacing. Basically I've got it so that every Return hit, it leaves no space between the paragraphs (like a soft return).
When I imported the file into InDesign using the Place comand, all the carriage returns were twice as big as they were in Microsoft Word. Is there any way to change how much space a carriage return creates under a paragraph? Specifically I would like all my Carriage Returns to become the size of soft returns (Forced Line Break), is that possible?
I signed up to Lynda.com and I've done lots of research to find the answer by looking through forums but this is still my first week into using InDesign and I can't understand a lot of the language involved. The microsoft word document is over 3 thousand pages long and so fixing each paragraph one by one is a very last resort for me. Here's what I've tried:
1) Changing Leading throughout the entire document. This doesn't work as it ruins the paragraphs themselves, and didn't change the carriage returns much.
2) I used the Find/Change tool to find all Carriage returns "\r" and replace them with soft returns "\n".   I was sure this was a genius move but for whatever technical reason I can't understand, it OBLITERATED the structure of my document.
So anyway, back to square one Been stuck on this for a good 7 hours now haha.
Cheers to anyone that bothers reading this, especially if you know the solution

Well, if you typed this Word document yourself, you have been going at it the wrong way right from the start. Compare with your post; did you insert a return at the end of each line, or did you just type on and let the forum software break the lines for you?
1) This leads to nothing. "Leading" defines the distance between lines, and does nothing special with Hard returns. The lines will still be broken as they were.
2) This leads to nother either. A hard return says: I want all of the next stuff on the next line. A soft return says the same. They only add stuff that makes individual lines justify.
You should (a) not expect InDesign to automagically fix badly typed files, and (b) replace each hard return with a single space. That ought to make your text behave slightly more natural.

  • Hard Carriage Returns on Paragraph and XML

    Hi,
    I'm still running FM 7.2, I have 8.0, but we are not ready as a company to move yet.
    I am capturing legacy FM information and need to save as XML.
    This information will at times have paragraphs that used hard carriage returns to build in separation and make things easier to read.
    When we export this XML, these hard CRs are removed and all extra white space is compressed out of the element.
    This is causing much grief for the people reading the documents and they have asked if I can retain the hard breaks.
    I've looked into the Structured Application and found nothing. I've looked at the ReadWrite Rules files in hopes I could map the hard break to a element of some kind, or something like that. I'm not finding any solutions.
    Is there a way to keep this information in the resulting XML file?
    Thanks,
    - mike

    Hello Mr. Hare,
    you might try the following:
    1. Adjust the template of your structapp to contain a variable named "hardreturn" whose definition is "\n" (without the quotiation marks).
    2. In your R/W-Rules, write: entity "hardreturn"is fm char 0x09;
    3. In every FM-Document you want to save as XML
    a. also add the variable
    b. assign the structapp
    4. ..and do the following
    a. insert the variable "hardreturn" somewhere and copy it into the clipboard, and delete the variable from your insertion point
    b. Search for "\p\p" (=two consecutive hard returns, i.e. an "empty line" or for "\x09" (= a soft return) and "change" "by pasting".
    The result should be a variable "hardreturn, wherever \p\p or \x09 was.
    If you save this as XML, the \x09 from the variable should survive as an entity.
    Hope this helps.
    With kind regards,
    Franz.

  • Help needed with Carriage Return in Unicode system

    Hi Experts,
    we have an issue with one of our programs regarding the carriage return that is used when creating a csv file. This issue has only came about because of the recent upgrade to ECC6.
    The main change to the program was the redefinition of the line feed variable.
    Existing statement was --> DATA: v_lf TYPE x VALUE '0D'.
    This was then replaced with
    New statement --> DATA: v_lf type c VALUE cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf.
    Since this change has been implemented, the csv file that is created and sent on as an attachment via the function SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1 is now not displayed correctly.
    When looking at the attachment in trn SOST, a message is also displayed saying the file is not in a recognizable format when selecting the file to view.
    The hex value for cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf is 000D000A and this seems to be causing the issue.
    I've also tried using Function FI_DME_CHARATERS as I only really want to use the CR. However, the hex value for this is 000D and not 0D.
    Is there any way of converting this to have a hex value of 0D?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

  • Keep white spaces and carriage returns?

    I'm viewing a column -VARCHAR2(4000)- in a standard report column.
    The column value contains white spaces and carriage returns.
    I put "white-space:pre;" in CSS Style, but it still skips carriage returns...
    What can I do to view white spaces and carriage returns?
    I'm using apex 3.0 and IE 7.
    Saad.

    I'm using apex 3.0 and IE 7.There's your problem...
    IE6 (and, since there don't seem to be any docs saying anything different, presumably IE7) don't support white-space: pre in quirks mode. Don't ask me why - probably in one of MS efforts to "not break the web".
    All the APEX built-in templates are rendered in quirks mode as they don't supply complete DOCTYPEs. If you are using a standard APEX template or a custom template without a complete DOCTYPE declaration you are probably seeing this quirks behaviour.
    It looks like this will change in IE8.

  • Carriage Returns in Message Area

    Hi,
    I am using a hidden field "P6_SUBMIT_MESSAGE" to store a message that gets generated from a PL/SQL process. I then use the following trick to display that same message in the message area at the top of my page
    Process success message
    &P6_SUBMIT_MESSAGE.
    How can I get carriage returns into this message. I have tried adding chr(10), chr(13) and even '<'br'>' in the PL/SQL process but no luck. If I use chr(13) and my P6_SUBMIT_MESSAGE is a Textarea (not a Hidden field) I can see the desired results in that text area but even then, the carriage returns are not propagated to the message area at the top of the page.
    Thanks

    I know this is not my thread but i just wanted to say, thanks scott! this works! i'm having the same problem as Robert and tried every possible way like he did with the ch(10) and < b r >... but did not realize to change the page item type, i had it as text area also. Now i changed it to display text (does not save state) and used < b r > for carriage return... it works like a charm!
    Thanks again,
    Marilyn

  • How can labview update the string control (text-edit box) after we have pressed the carriage return key on the keyboard during text-editing within that box?

    Dear readers,
    I have been trying to work out how to get labview to detect the event when a 'string' control has been modified, where the user has finished editing the string either by 1) pressing the enter key on the keyboard, or by 2) taking the focus away from the string control again. For example.. if I use the mouse to click on the string control and then I type 1234 into the box, I would like to have a routine that does something once the user hits the Enter key of the keyboard, or when the user takes the focus away from the string control again by clicking on something else. I would like the routine to respond even when the user didn't change anything in the text box (such as when we mouse-click on the edit box to go into edit mode, and then mouse-click on something else to remove the focus with no changes to the contents in edit-box).
    The purpose of my routine is to have a edit-box for a user to change for example the centre-frequency of a vector network analyser, so that the centre-frequency of the network analyser can change once the user finishes entering a new value in the text-edit box by hitting Enter key after the number is keyed in. Even if the user has clicked on the edit box, but changes their mind by mouse-clicking on something else to remove focus from the edit box, I would still like labview to detect the event when the control loses focus, so that the centre frequency can be updated anyway (to the same value that was already in the edit box).
    So far, I've tried set the string control option to 'limit to single line', so that I can try to scan for a carriage return .. '\n' ... pattern in the string. Unfortunately this doesn't work because labview doesn't seem to attach the '\n' to the end of that single line.
    Could someone please suggest ways to set a flag when a user hits Enter during text-edit mode of a string control, or when focus has been removed from the string control?
    While I've only described my problem for controlling a single control parameter on the gpib device, I'd like to make this feature work so that I can do the same kind of thing with other control parameters as well.
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Kenny

    Hi Kenny,
    instead of using the event structure, you can directly achieve to what you want by the KeyFocus property of the string control.
    - Enable Limit to single line option
    - Create the property KeyFocus in read mode and connect an indicator
    Each time you click on the string to modify it KeyFocus is True; when you click away or hit Enter KeyFocus is False.
    You can toggle your settings when KeyFocus changes from True to False.

  • Read Only TextAreas with Carriage Return, Line Breaks and Word Wrapping

    Hi all,
    I know there are a few posts around this subject but I cannot find the answer to the exact problem I have.
    I have a page that has a 'TextArea with Character Counter' (4000 Chars) that is conditionally read only based on the users credentials (using the 'Read Only' attributes of the TextArea item).
    When the field is editable (not Read Only) everything works fine but when I make the field Read Only I start to have problems:
    The first problem is that the Carriage Return and Line Breaks are ignored and the text becomes one continuos block. I have managed to fix this by adding pre and post element text of pre and /pre tags. This has made the Carriage Return and Line Breaks word nicely and dispaly correctly.
    However, it has introduced a second problem. Long lines, with no Carriage Returns or Line Breaks, now extend to the far right of the page with no word wrapping, making my page potentially 4000+ characters wide.
    How can I get the field to be display only, with recognised Carriage Returns and Line Breaks, and Word Wrapping inside a fixed width of, say, 150 characters?
    Many thanks,
    Martin

    Hi,
    Just a cut and paste of yours with the field name changed:
    htp.p('<script>');
    htp.p('$x("P3_COMMENTS").readonly=true;');
    htp.p('</script>');I also have the following in the page HTML Header, could they be conflicting?
    <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
    function setReleaseToProd(wpTypeCode){
       //setReleaseToProd($v(this))
      var get = new htmldb_Get(null,$v('pFlowId'),'APPLICATION_PROCESS=set_release_to_prod',0);
      get.addParam('x01',wpTypeCode);
      gReturn = get.get();
      if(gReturn) {
         $s('P3_RELEASE_TO_PROD',gReturn);
      get = null;
    </script>I am a long way from knowing much about Javascript (this page code was written by someone else) so all help is much appreciated.

  • Using a Macro to add a Carriage Return after each data entry within all cells of an imported range of cells

    I have a macro that copies data from a Target workbook then pastes the data into a destination workbook.  I then wish to use lookups in the destination workbook to view specific data from the pasted range of data on a separate sheet.
    The problem is, the cells that contain numbers from the pasted data have the green dogeared error flags associated with the cell. The only way I can make a lookup function work, is to go to each cell and manually enter a carriage return after each entry.
    The code for the macro is given below.  What can be done so that the pasted data contains no errors associated with the number cells?  Or can a second macro be written to clean the data.  If so can you help me out?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi DAPAugust64,
    The green "dogeared error flags" of the cells means that you paste numbers in these cells, but they're formated as Text.
    So you need to change the cells back to the correct format so that the lookup function works fine. You can simply call this method after pasting:
    ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).NumberFormat = "General"
    ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1) = ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).Text
    Or use PasteSpecial method to paste the numbers as well as it's format:

  • Default Carriage return in the last column when data is downloaded to Excel

    Problem:
    When you download data into Excel and if the last column of your excel is a numeric field, XMLP will add a carriage return (special character) to your numeric field. This feild will be considered as character field by excel.
    Work Around:
    When you build the template, create an empty column as your last column and leave E (or end-for-each) in that empty column.
    Note:
    If the last column is a character column then you do not have to do this.

    I originally had that END:VCARD without any carriage return.
    But I still get an extra carriage return at the end when the JSP renders to VCF
    I'm using Tomcat running on Linux.
    I found this, article which implies (but does not explicitly say) JSP in general adds a newline to the last line:
    http://www.caucho.com/resin-3.0/jsp/faq.xtp (But its not tomcat either, so maybe this info is irrelevant).

  • Receiver File channel for XML files: with carriage return

    Hi all,
    we are using a receiver FILE channel to generate an XML file that is sent to an external partner.
    The XML file looks good in a parser (IExplorer). But in fact there are not carriage return / line feeds between the XML tags
    of the XML payload in the file.
    Our partner now requires the XML file in a more vertical structure which means: for every tag a separate line (like it is displayed in a parser)
    Does anybody know a more general way to convert to a vertical XML structure (so with carriage return line feed).
    There is one entry in the SDN dealing with this topic but suggesting using an UDF. I think this is a very specific way.
    I don't think it is a good way to change/enhance the message mapping just because of a general formating change.
    Is it better to use an XSLT mapping as a second step in the interface mapping or a JAVA adapter module to convert ?
    any experiences? suggestions? examples?
    Thank you very much
    best regards
    Hans
    examples:

    <MT_batchStatus><type>BS</type><header><message><messageSender>SENDER</messageSender><messageDate>20090723143720</messageDate> ... and so on
    required:

    <type>BS</type>
    <header>

    In such a case, the best is to write an generic XSLT or Java mapping that will attempt to do the pretty printing/formatting of the xml.
    The advantage of a generic one is that you can reuse the same class/jar for many other scenarios.
    so the flow will be as below in your interface mapping;
    1. your specific source to target mapping
    2. the generic formatting class

  • Numbers ought to keep check box that allows carriage return within a cell universally within a table

    Apple really fell asleep at the switch when releasing its latest version of Numbers 2013 (3.2), because it ignored the universal learning styles of human beings who have used the software in earlier releases and seemed to change features with little consideration for the community as a whole.
    For example, why would you delete the feature that allows a user to turn-on or turn-off the "carriage return within a cell".  It seems smart of them to add the abilityt to simply press the Option key and hit return at the same time to allow a carriage return within a cell, but why would you DELETE the feature that allows returns within a cell universally within a table?
    And then the Inspector got completely revised.
    Time saved in creating technologies gets eaten up in having to relearn technology every time a new release is created that doesn't build on the previous release very well.

    Adamo,
    You are complaining to fellow users.  It is best to post your feedback to Apple using the menu item

  • Storing carriage return and other special characters in a TestStand variable and passing to LabVIEW

    I am using TestStand step to call a LabVIEW VI that writes commands to a serial device.  The device expects a carriage return at the end of the command.  I can create a constant string in TestStand with the carriage return, e.g., "ATA\x0D" and pass that to a LabVIEW string control which shows ATA\r and the VI works properly.
    To provide consistency and flexibility in my code, I want to store the terminator character(s) in a TestStand variable.  However, when I try to use an expression to create the command string, i.e. "ATA" + "Locals.Terminator", where Locals.Terminator is set to "\x0D", my LabVIEW VI string control shows "ATA\\x0D" which doesn't work.  And when I try Locals.Terminator set to "\r", the LabVIEW string control shows "ATA\\r" which doesn't work either.
    Is there a way to store special characters in a TestStand variable and pass them to LabVIEW as special characters?  I saw in another post that if you edit the TestStand variable by pressing Cntl-Enter, it will store  the newline \n properly and it can be sent to LabVIEW - that works for me as well for \n.  But  I need to send a carriage return.
    I've attached my test sequence and the corresponding LabVIEW VI with a string control.

    Hi Hans,
    Thanks for your detailed explanation and examples.  In TestStand, change the String parameter's String Type to Binary String instead of ASCII.  Then it will pass the desired value.

  • XSL mapping of ARTMAS IDoc - carriage returns and white space

    Hi all. I have tried all sorts here and am completely stuck. I am mapping an article master ARTMAS IDoc using XSL mapping and an extra carriage return and white space characters are being added to the FIELD1 and FIELD2 fields of the E1BPE1MARAEXTRT segment and I don't know why! These fields contain all our bespoke field values joined together so they are 229 and 250 characters long respectively, which I think is related to the problem. The mapping program looks like this:
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
    <xsl:output method="xml" encoding="UTF-8" omit-xml-declaration="no" indent="yes"/>
    <xsl:template match="/">
    <ARTMAS04>
    <IDOC>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/EDI_DC40"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MATHEAD"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARART"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARAEXTRT"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MAKTRT"/>
      <xsl:for-each select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARCRT">
        <xsl:if test="(PLANT='D100') or (PLANT='D200') or (PLANT='D300')">
          <xsl:copy-of select="."/>
        </xsl:if>
      </xsl:for-each>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARMRT"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MEANRT"/>
    </IDOC>
    </ARTMAS04>
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    I have a test IDoc going through this and the first 3 characters of the FIELD1 are "BIK". If I look at the source of the XML file, the problem area looks like this:
    <E1BPE1MARAEXTRT SEGMENT="1">
          <FUNCTION>004</FUNCTION>
          <MATERIAL>000000000000895649</MATERIAL>
          <b><FIELD1>
            BIK</b>      0  0.00 T                                    000000001CARRERA FURY 04 20"     CARRERA FURY 04 20" 2005092420040622    X                    00000000   20031104 00200406140000000000                    0.00 0000000
          </FIELD1>
    You can't really see it above, but there is a carriage return and 8 white spaces before the BIK. Where does this carriage return and white space come from?! Any help would be really appreciated - this is driving me crazy!
    Many thanks,
    Stuart Richards

    Stuart,
    I think I know the cause to your problem. I am not an XSLT programmer but based on searching this forum I found how I can acheive the carriage return at the end of my document. Your xsl statement is as follows:
    <xsl:output method="xml" encoding="UTF-8" omit-xml-declaration="no" indent="yes"/>
    Change the indent value from yes to no. This should remove the carraige return. Hope this works for you.
    I actually need a carriage return and line feed on my document so I am still stuck. All I have acheived is the carraige return.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • JSP for Vcard cannot strip carriage return in the last line of the file.

    I am using JSP to output a Vcard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCard)
    The following code works great in Windows but fails on the mac:
    <%@ page contentType="text/x-vcard" %><%--

    REV:20080424T195243Z
    <c:out value="${fn:replace('END:VCARD','\\\r','')}" escapeXml="false"/>After some tests, I discovered that Mac (I used Tiger, latest update, not Leopard) needs extra white space and carriage returns stripped off. Once this is achieved, the vcard will automatically import into Address Book. I have followed other forums which advice on using JSP comments as in the code above. But for some strange reason the last line of the JSP outputs an extra carraige return. How do I get rid of the carriage return at the end of the file? the replace function from JSTL is not working.

  • File sender  - carriage return and new line as endseparator

    Hi All,
    I'm stumbled with a problem to set carriage return and newline character as the endseparator (record delimiter)
    Scenario: The input file PI is receiving has got few fields which has text in it and the content in this text has got newline characters. So to identify record separator, at  the end of each record the combination of carriage return and new line is added.
    In file sender content conversion I've set the folllowing parameters to achieve this:
    Row.fieldSeparator :   ,  (comma)
    Row.endSeparator  :  '0x0D''0x0A'
    Problem: In my sample input file, the first row has a text field with a newline character. When executed PI is splitting the record at the newline character in the text field (instead of combination of carriagereturn and newline which is set in the endSeparator paramter).
    Pls advice on how to resolve this .
    Happy Holidays!!
    amar

    Rajesh..Thanks for your quick response
    I'm trying with the actual file being provided by the trading partner. I did not generate the file nor changed the file..
    Before identifying the combination of carraige return and new line, the adapter is splitting the record when encountered with new line character within one of the text fields.
    As you said it worked for you, you do have new line characters within fields in a record?..pls throw some light..let me know for any information..
    Thank you
