Case in where clause
Hello to everyone
I have a select like as
select
where (KPMERCE IS NULL AND KSMERCE IS NULL)
UNION
where (KPMERCE IS NOT NULL AND KSMERCE IS NULL AND K_PMERCE = KPMERCE)
UNION
where (KSMERCE IS NOT NULL AND K_PMERCE = KPMERCE AND K_SMERCE = KSMERCE)is possibile create a CASE in where clause, something as, So, i can write a single query,
CASE (in where-clause)
WHEN (KPMERCE IS NULL AND KSMERCE IS NULL)
WHEN (KPMERCE IS NOT NULL AND KSMERCE IS NULL AND K_PMERCE = KPMERCE)
WHEN (KPMERCE IS NOT NULL AND KSMERCE IS NOT NULL AND K_PMERCE = KPMERCE AND K_SMERCE = KSMERCE) so
IF CONDITION IS SATISFYED RETURNs ROWS OTHERWISE NO ROWS
Thanks in advance
If your select lists are equal, then you can do it like this:
where ( (KPMERCE IS NULL AND KSMERCE IS NULL)
or (KPMERCE IS NOT NULL AND KSMERCE IS NULL AND K_PMERCE = KPMERCE)
or (KSMERCE IS NOT NULL AND K_PMERCE = KPMERCE AND K_SMERCE = KSMERCE)
)Regards,
Rob.

Decode/Case in Where clause
Hello,
We are experiencing an issue with a Select statement that uses Decode in the Where clause. Specifically, it seems to be ignoring a nested Decode and just returning the default value. We have another nested decode that works fine, though.
A member of our team mentioned that he believed there was an issue with using Decode and Case statements inside of a where clause within HTML DB...Is this correct? If it is, is there a workaround? Since the nested Decode works elsewhere in this statement, that doesn't seem right.
My select statement looks like:
SELECT
SUBSTR(OBOB.OBOB_CNAME, 0, 30) d,
OBOB.OBOB_UID r
FROM
ISR_OBOB_OBJECT OBOB,
ISR_OBAF_OBJECT_AFFILIATION OBAF,
ISR.ISR_OBSD_SDR OBSD
WHERE
OBOB.OBOB_UID = OBSD.OBOB_UID AND
OBOB.OBOB_UID = OBAF.OBOB_B_UID AND
/*If Personal radio button is selected, displays all SDRs associated with user.
If All is selected, displays all SDRs associated with IS group selected from drop down list
or every SDR.
OBAF.OBOB_A_UID = DECODE(:P1_DISPLAY_ALL,
'Personal', :F101_APP_USER_UID,
/*This is the decode statement that it seems to ignore. If ALL is selected, the query should see if a group has
has been selected from a drop down list that appears when the ALL button is chosen. If a group is selected
(the item isn't 0), only SDRs for that group should be shown. Otherwise, all SDRs for every group should display.
'ALL', DECODE(:P1_SEARCH_IS_SUPPORT_GROUP, 0, OBAF.OBOB_A_UID, :P1_SEARCH_IS_SUPPORT_GROUP),

dWe originally wrote this as a PL/SQL statement that returned a query string since most of the where clause is dependent on items the user may or may not select, but we have moved the query into a multiselect list, which only seems to allow SQL Queries.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
ScottScott: Did you try running that SQL statement in SQL Workshop in Apex? You can run it as it is, it will popup a window asking you to enter values for the bind variables.
JAC73: I don't think an IN clause doesn't work that way, you need a actual SQL sub-query, not an expression from a DECODE/CASE statement. Search this site for str2tbl and see Tom's excellent discussion at

Can we use Case in Where Clause along with Exists
Hi Everybody,
Can we use Case in the where clause with exists? As i have a requirement in which i have to check whether value exists in 6 views, now depending on some value(gns_type )of select clause i have to attach a paticular exists else the performance dies.
Please go through the query any suggestion appreciated.

How to set dynamic WHERE clause to VO from backingBean?
Hi,
Can any one let me know the best way to add the dynamic WHERE clause in to VO query.
I have created AM (with AMImpl.java) & VO (with VOImpl.java & VORowImpl.java) in my model project. I suppose to set the WHERE condition at runtime while the user click the search button. I am handling the user button click at UI layer backingBean. From the backing bean I could able to get the objct of the VO and set the where clause by below code.
ValueExpression valueExp = elFactory.createValueExpression(elContext, "#{bindings.UserSearchVO1Iterator}", Object.class);
DCIteratorBinding dcIter = (DCIteratorBinding)valueExp.getValue(elContext);
ViewObject userSearchVO = dcIter.getViewObject();
userSearchVO.setWhereClause("lower(usr_login) LIKE ':1' and usr_udf_suid like ':2' ");
userSearchVO.executeQuery();But as I fear this is not the right way to do it. So I am creating the cutom method inside the VOImpl.java and triggring that method by creating one more cutom method in AMImpl.java. But I dont know how to invoke this AM method from backingBean.
AMImpl method
public void initDetails()
UserSearchVOImpl vo = getUserSearchVO1();
vo.initQuery();
VOImpl method
public void initQuery()
setWhereClause("lower(usr_login) LIKE 'a%' and usr_udf_suid like '%1144%'");
executeQuery();
}Can any one guide me which is the best way to set the where clause to VO? How to call the AM method from backingBean?
Thanks

Whenever you have a problem, please post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) from all tables involved.
Also post the results you want from that data, and an explanation of how you get those results from that data, with specific examples.
Simplify the problem as much as possible. Remove all tables and columns that play no role in this problem.
Always say which version of Oracle you're using.
Here's an example of two UNIONed queries:
SELECT deptno
, SUM (sal) AS total_sal
, 'MANAGEMENT' AS grp_name
FROM scott.emp
WHERE job IN ('MANAGER', 'PRESIDENT')
GROUP BY deptno
UNION ALL
SELECT deptno
, SUM (sal) AS total_sal
, 'OLD-TIMERS' AS grp_name
FROM scott.emp
WHERE hiredate < DATE '1984-01-01'
GROUP BY deptno
ORDER BY deptno
, grp_name
;Output:
` DEPTNO TOTAL_SAL GRP_NAME
10 7450 MANAGEMENT
10 8750 OLD-TIMERS
20 2975 MANAGEMENT
20 6775 OLD-TIMERS
30 2850 MANAGEMENT
30 9400 OLD-TIMERSA more efficient way to get the same information, without a UNION is:
SELECT deptno
, SUM (CASE WHEN job IN ('MANAGER', 'PRESIDENT') THEN sal END) AS management
, SUM (CASE WHEN hiredate < DATE '1984-01-01' THEN sal END) AS old_timers
FROM scott.emp
WHERE job IN ('MANAGER', 'PRESIDENT')
OR hiredate < DATE '1984-01-01'
GROUP BY deptno
ORDER BY deptno
;Output:
` DEPTNO MANAGEMENT OLD_TIMERS
10 7450 8750
20 2975 6775
30 2850 9400As you can see, the results aren't exactly the same. UNION makes it easy to get more rows in the output than there are in the original; CASE (or DECODE,you can use whichever you like) makes it easy to get fewer rows and more columns. If you reallt want one kind of output or the other, it can be done with a little more work using either UNION or CASE.
When using CASE, the WHERE clause is typically more inclusive than any of the WHERE caluses in the UNION. Some of the conditions (in this example, all of the conditions) that were in the separate WHERE clauses of the UNION get changed to be conditions in separate CASE expressions. -
No output for XML Publisher Report using CASE/DECODE in Where Clause
Hi,
I've a business requirement to modify an existing report which has two input parameters,
-> p_statcode (Closed Status) which can have values 'Y' or 'N'
-> p_overdue (Overdue Flag) which can have values 'Y' or 'N'
The Overdue Flag is an evaluated column having values of Y/N and it is evaluated as follows,
ONTF_MOD_VAL(NVL (
(TRUNC (SYSDATE)
- (TO_DATE (oe_order_lines.attribute18,
'DD-MON-RRRR')
+ TO_NUMBER (fnd_lookup_values.meaning))),
0
overdue_flagThe user requirement now is they needs to be a third option for parameter p_overdue called ALL,
passing which the output should include records having
p_statcode is Y ELSE p_statcode is N AND p_overdue is Y OR p_overdue is N
In other words records having both Y and N vlaues for Overdue Flag have to be returned irrespective of the value given to Closed Status.
Original where clause in the Data Definition file is as follows,
WHERE Closed_Status = nvl(:p_statcode,Closed_Status)
AND overdue_flag = nvl(:p_overdue,overdue_flag)My modified code is as follows,
WHERE Closed_Status = NVL (:p_statcode, Closed_Status)
AND overdue_flag = (CASE
WHEN :p_overdue = 'Y' THEN 'Y'
WHEN :p_overdue = 'N' THEN 'N'
ELSE overdue_flag
END)
OR
WHERE Closed_Status = NVL (:p_statcode, Closed_Status)
AND overdue_flag = DECODE (:p_overdue, 'Y', 'Y', 'N', 'N',overdue_flag)Both approaches have the same problem.
The output is in EXCEL format. The modified query works fine for p_overdue as Y or N but when p_overdue is passed as ALL it returns an empty EXCEL sheet with just the report output column headers.
Any help as to why this is the case ?? What is wrong in my approach ?
Regards,
Vishalnot clear about p_overdue = ALL
which values needed for p_overdue = ALL ?
try smth like
WHERE Closed_Status = NVL (:p_statcode, Closed_Status)
AND (
overdue_flag = DECODE (:p_overdue, 'Y', 'Y', 'N', 'N',overdue_flag) and :p_overdue != 'ALL'
or
:p_overdue = 'ALL' and (overdue_flag = 'Y' or overdue_flag = 'N')
)for overdue_flag which has more then 'Y', 'N' values
if overdue_flag only in ('Y','N') then
WHERE Closed_Status = NVL (:p_statcode, Closed_Status)

Problem in case of or condition in where clause in case of leftouter joi.
hi
i am encountering a wierd problem.
in a select query if i have a left outer join and a or condition in where clause the order of condition in or matters and if i use a to_char problem is solved.
see query below
select * from custsupp left outer join Salesperson s on custsupp.sales_rep = s.id ,state a where (CS_FLAG='C' or CS_flag ='B') and custsupp.state = a.id
i have a single record in table custsupp with CS_FLAG ='B' the above does not return result. but if i move CS_FLAG='B' on left of or i.e
select * from custsupp left outer join Salesperson s on custsupp.sales_rep = s.id ,state a where (CS_FLAG='B' or CS_flag ='C') and custsupp.state = a.id
i get the rsult.
also if i remove left outer join and keep order of condition as it is i get result i.e
select * from custsupp ,state a where (CS_FLAG='C' or CS_flag ='B') and custsupp.state = a.id
also if i add a to_char to co,umns CS_FLAG i get the result.
select * from custsupp left outer join Salesperson s on custsupp.sales_rep = s.id ,state a where (to_char(CS_FLAG)='C' or to_char(CS_flag ='B')) and custsupp.state = a.id
why it is so?
CS_flag is of type nchar

Edited by: shreyasd on Jun 9, 2010 11:07 PMFirst if you don't want to take credit of the free sample then follow the below procedure:
1. Do the GRN for all the three item and for the free item in the excise tab at the item level select the material as non cenvatable. Just remember to add base value of the item
2. If you want to capture the Part1 entry then just do the normal transaction and while posting the excise with J1IEX just remove the excise duties for the free item.
3. For paying the vendor the excise amount, just do subsequent debit in the MIRO and in the details tab add in the unplanned delivery cost the amount that you want to pay for the excise duties
Second case if you want to take credit of the duties:
1. Do the Normal GRN process, add the base value and excise values for the free item.
2. Post the Excise duites with J1iEX.
3. The with the account entry you can settle the excise payment
Hope this will help you

Using :case when in where clause
Hello,
I need some help with using of case statement in a where clause
Table that contains info about employees taking some coursework:
Class (values could be SAP, ORACLE, JAVA)
Code (if Class is SAP then CODE is not null; if class is any other CODE is NULL)
Start Date (date they began class not null)
End Date (date then ended the class - could be null)
Employee Level(numbers from one through five)
I need a single LOV in forms that should show Employee_Level for input class,code,date.
How to do this?
I started off with this but get 'missing statement error'
select distinct employee_level from e_course
where (
case when &class='SAP' then code ='1' and start_date > to_date('20000101','YYYYMMDD') and
end_date < to_date('20000101','YYYYMMDD')
else
null
end) order by employee_level;ThanksHi,

I need to check date & code. This is what is causing the error.Why do you want to use a CASE statement?
Why can't you put all your conditions directly iinto a WHERE clause, soemthing like this:
WHERE ( &class='SAP'
AND code ='1'
OR ( start_date > to_date('20000101','YYYYMMDD')
AND end_date < to_date('20000101','YYYYMMDD')
)I said "something like this" because I don't know what you really want to do. -
Query Tuning - using CASE statement in the WHERE clause
Hi All,
My query has been modified to use a CASE statement in the WHERE clause to consider data from certain columns based on a parameter value. This modified query is doing a full table scan and running endlessly. Please suggest what may be done to improve its performance:
Query:
SELECT LAST_DAY(TRUNC(TO_TIMESTAMP(os.requestdatetime, 'yyyymmddhh24:mi:ss.ff4'))) AS summary_date,
os.acctnum,
os.avieworigin_refid,

WHERE os.acctnum IS NOT NULL
AND os.avieworigin_refid IS NOT NULL
AND os.requestdatetime IS NOT NULL

Using case when statement or decode stament in where clause
hi gems..
i have a problem in the following query..
i am trying to use case when statement in the where clause of a select query.
select cr.customer_name || ' - ' ||cr.customer_number as cust_name,
cr.salary as salary
from customer_details cr
where (case when '>' = '>' then 'cr.salary > 5000'
when '>' = '<' then 'cr.salary < 5000'
when '>' = '=' then 'cr.salary = 5000'
else null
end);
the expression in the when clause of the case-when statement will come from UI and depending on the choice i need to make the where clause.
thats why for running the query, i have put '>' in that place.
so the original query will look like this(for your reference):
select cr.customer_name || ' - ' ||cr.customer_number as cust_name,
cr.salary as salary
from customer_details cr
where (case when variable = '>' then 'cr.salary > 5000'
when variable = '<' then 'cr.salary < 5000'
when variable = '=' then 'cr.salary = 5000'
else null
end);
so, in actual case,if the user selects '>' then the filter will be "where cr.salary > 5000"
if the user selects '<' then the filter will be "where cr.salary < 5000"
if the user selects '=' then the filter will be "where cr.salary = 5000"
but i am getting the error "ORA 00920:invalid relational operator"
please help..thanks in advance..Hi,
select cr.customer_name || ' - ' ||cr.customer_number as cust_name,
cr.salary as salary
from customer_details cr
where ( v_variable = 'bigger'
and cr.salary > 5000
or ( v_variable = 'less'
and cr.salary < 5000
or ( v_variable = 'eq'
and cr.salary = 5000

Case statement in where clause ??
Hello gurus,
Can we use case statements in where clause ?? Any example will be great!
And also i would like to know, besides CASE and DECODE statements, Is there any way we can use IF ELSE statements in SELECT clause or in WHERE clause ?
Thank you!!Hi,

Hoek,
Thanks for the reply
Whatever you return from 'then' should match your criteria.I didnt get this part...can you elaborate this part ?? Thank you!!Remember what a CASE expression does: it returns a single value in one of the SQL data types (or NULL).
You're probably familiar with conditions such as
WHERE col = 1Inthe example above, col could be replaced by any kind of expression: a function call, and operation (such as "d * 24") or a CASE expression, which is exactly what Hoek posted:
where case
when col = 6 then 1
when col = 9 then 1
end = 1;I think what Hoek meant about mnatching was this: since the CASE expression is being compared to a NUMBER, then every THEN clause (as well as the ELSE, if there is one) should return the same data type. You can't have one THEN clause return a NUMBER, and another one in the same CASE expression return a DATE, like this:
where case
when col = 6 then 1
when col = 9 then SYSDATE -- WRONG! Raises ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes
end = 1;
By the way, it's rare when a CASE expression really helps in a WHERE clause. CASE is great for doing conitional stuff in places where you otherwise can't (in the ORDER BY clause, for example), but the WHERE clause was designed for conditions.
Hoek was just trying to give a simple example. If you really wanted those results, it would be simpler to say:
where col = 6
or col = 9and simpler still to say
where col IN (6, 9) -

Hello,
I have an APEX application that I need to build a SQL statement for a LOV (List of Values). I have a hidden filed that contains the customer type which can be an 'R' or 'B'. The query needs to be able to display two different result sets based on the customer type of 'R' or 'B'.
If the customer type is 'R' then:
SELECT drg_descr d, drg_code r
FROM distance_ranges
WHERE drg_min_miles IN (0,5)
ORDER BY drg_min_milesIf the customer type is 'B' then:
SELECT drg_descr d, drg_code r
FROM distance_ranges
WHERE drg_min_miles IN (0,5,10,15,20)
ORDER BY drg_min_milesCan someone help me with what I think needs to be a case statement?
Thanks,
JoeHi,
You can try CASE statement with WHERE clause
SELECT drg_descr d, drg_code r
FROM distance_ranges
WHERE (CASE param_cust_type
WHEN(param_cust_type='R') THEN (drg_min_miles IN (0, 5)
WHEN (param_cust_type='B') THEN (drg_min_miles IN (0,5,10,15,20)
END;
Please try and let me know if anything wrong.
Anyone from the forum comment my code if there is any wrong.
Thanks!

How to use case function in where clause
Hi,
Suppose a table DEMO has columns
DEMO TABLE
user_id
user_name
location
In this table i have 15 users. but out of 15 users i want to use only 5 users for passing as user_name.
then how to achieve the result
1. when i pass the particular 5 user_name in where clause then i should get all the user_name and for other 10 users it will show only the passing user_name.
how to use case functionDo you mean this ?
