Case insensitive String comparison

It is more proper to discuss this in Internationalization forum. I moved the thread to http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5380555 .

Thanks the reply.
You suggested we use Locale("") in solution 2, which use equalsIgnoreCase. But the equalsIgnoreCase do not require any Locale as parameter. Could you clarify?
Besides, as I mentioned, could you explain the algorithm used in equalsIgnoreCase method? It seems that it is not natural to check both upperCase and lowerCase for equality. Is there any reference to Unicode.org's advice?

  • Blank padding in case of nchar columns while case insensitive comparison

    hi
    i have my database on oracle 9i .
    i want case insensitive behaviour so i set nls_comp=ANSi and nls_sort to GENERIC_BASELETTER.
    all columns of type character are nchar in my database.
    but when i execute a query having a where condition on nchar column blanks are not padded and there is no result ( documentation says lanks are padded while comparisons)..
    for e.g select * from area where code='bom' does not return result.
    i need to do select * from area where rtrim(code) = 'bom'. (note code is of length nchar(10))
    please suggest if here is any solutions for this.

  • How to serch a character string in a BLOB (case insensitive)

    Hi
    Could somebody help me with this please.
    I need to search for the existance of a character string in a BLOB column of a table.
    I can do it in the below way.
    PROCEDURE search (in_search VARCHAR2) IS
    lob_doc BLOB;
    Pattern VARCHAR2(30);
    Position INTEGER := 0;
    Offset INTEGER := 1;
    Occurrence INTEGER := 1;
    BEGIN
    Pattern := utl_raw.cast_to_raw(in_search);
    SELECT BLOB_CONTENT INTO lob_doc
    FROM documents WHERE ein = '702265981';
    DBMS_LOB.OPEN (lob_doc, DBMS_LOB.LOB_READONLY);
    Position := DBMS_LOB.INSTR(lob_doc, Pattern, Offset, Occurrence);
    IF Position = 0 THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Pattern not found');
    ELSE
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('The pattern occurs at '|| position);
    END IF;
    DBMS_LOB.CLOSE (lob_doc);
    END search;
    But the problem is, it does a case sensitive search.
    I need a case-insensitive search
    Thanks in Advance

    The best way would be to use Oracle Text.
    However, if you want a quick and dirty solution, I would convert to CLOB, and (assuming 9i) you can use LOWER on the CLOB.
    Click on this link for a blob_to_clob function.

  • Case insensitive comparison

    Is there a way or setting at instance level by which all character value comparisons can happen in case insensitive manner ( For example "ABC" = "Abc" or = "abc" ) without requiring to use upper or lower functions in every query

    No there isn't a way currently. You can create a function based index which improves the performance of case insensitive searches. For example:
    SQL> CREATE INDEX case_insensitive_ind ON my_table(NLS_UPPER(empname));
    SQL> SELECT * FROM my_table WHERE NLS_UPPER(empname) = 'KARL';

  • Specifying Case-Insensitive Element Names in XML Schema

    Hope someone knows this!
    Is it possible to define an an XML Schema Definition so that Element names in the target XML File can be case insensitive.
    At the moment my Parser throws an error if the element names in the XML file do not have the exact same case as the definition in the XML schema.
    E.g
    In Schema i have:
    <xsd:element name="HOSTINVENTORYLINE" type="HostInventoryLineType" maxOccurs="unbounded" minOccurs="0"/>
    but in xml file i have
    <HostInventoryLine field=""/>
    or
    <hostinventoryline field=""/>
    Does anyone know anyway to get around this, so that the parser accepts the HostInventoryLine element in the xml as an instance of the HOSTINVENTORYLINE element defined in the schema.
    Thanks in Advance

    You could use substitution groups to handle this. You would need an entry in the schema for each valid capitalization. This won't scale well if you want to be completely case insensitive, but if you only support lower case, upper case, and camel case it should do the trick.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" elementFormDefault="qualified" attributeFormDefault="unqualified">
         <xs:complexType name="HostInventoryLineType">
              <xs:sequence>
                   <xs:element name="an-element" type="xs:string"/>
              </xs:sequence>
         </xs:complexType>
         <xs:element name="HostInventoryLine" type="HostInventoryLineType"/>
         <xs:element name="HOSTINVENTORYLINE" type="HostInventoryLineType" substitutionGroup="HostInventoryLine"/>
         <xs:element name="hostinventoryline" type="HostInventoryLineType" substitutionGroup="HostInventoryLine"/>

  • SELECT Query to get the Values in Case insensitive Format

    Hi ,
    This is hari,
    I want to select the user name in a table ex: username="HARI" or username='Hari' or username="HaRi" like this
    If i wrote the query like
    select username from userdb where username="Hari";
    it is displaying the records which only matches "Hari" only .
    can anybody help me out on this query asap please....
    the query should return all the results

  • Search for LIFNR case insensitive + range

    Ladies and gentlemen,
    I could use your help. I need to select rows from LFA1 where the name (NAME1) matches a string. It has two difficult points, which I were not able to combine into a single solution, even after all the research I done.
    - I need the search to be case insensitive (I found a partial solution here)
    - I need to combine it with a range table
    So: I need a case insensitive search using range table. Can this be done effectively? Or is there any workaround you could suggest? This is just a minor part of the report about invoices and must not take long.

    There is nothing to be done on 10g, other than building a function based index on the column in question, so that any UPPER() searches are optimized.
    Well, as Kamran Agayev already noted CI is available in 10g too. It also worth mentioning FBI creates a hidden column. Also, your statement
    In 11g we have the option to set the NLS_SORT parameter so that any searches are case-insensitive (or indeed accent insensitive). Find out more.

        SELECT agr_name UP TO iv_limit ROWS
        FROM ZROLE
        INTO TABLE lt_re_role
        WHERE agr_name LIKE lv_search_value.

    Hi,
    If the definition is not case sensitive, then always the data is stored in CAPS by default.
    So what u can do it, translate your string to UPPER CASE and then select.
    Place below statement just before your select.
    TRANSLATE lv_search_value TO UPPER CASE.
    SELECT agr_name UP TO iv_limit ROWS
    FROM ZROLE
    INTO TABLE lt_re_role
    WHERE agr_name LIKE lv_search_value.
    Thanks,
    Vinod.

  • Case insensitive search mode by jbo:DataQuery

    I'm working on a BC4J JSP project. I cannot find a way to search in the case insensitive mode. I'm using JDeveloper 9.0.3.1. I looked in the DataQueryComponent.jsp, the xxxx_Query.jsp, and all the files generated under the ViewObject to find a way to accomplish this but no luck. Please advise. Thank you.

    One thing you can do is modify the query handler. If it's a straight JSP app (no uix/struts) you are probably using DataHandler.jsp for you handling. If this is the case, you can modify the OnEvent section for Search and Add Criteria. They should look like this
    <jbo:OnEvent list="Search, Add Criteria" >
    <% String rowParam = params.getParameter("nRows");
    int nRows = 0;
    if (rowParam != null)
    try { nRows = Integer.parseInt(rowParam); }
    catch (Exception ex) { }
    %>
    <jbo:ViewCriteria id="vc" datasource="ds" action="new">
    <% for (int index=0; index < nRows; index++)
    String criteriaRowId = "row" + index;
    %>
    <jbo:CriteriaRow id="<%=criteriaRowId%>" >
    <jbo:AttributeIterate id="attrvc" datasource="ds" queriableonly="true">
    <% String item = attrvc.getName();
    String value = params.getParameter("row" + index + "_" + item);
    %>
    <jbo:Criteria dataitem="<%=item%>" value="<%=value%>" />
    </jbo:AttributeIterate>
    </jbo:CriteriaRow>
    <% } %>
    </jbo:ViewCriteria>
    </jbo:OnEvent>
    I added a line just about the <jbo:Criteria> line that converts the value to uppercase like this:
    if (value !=null) { value=value.toUpperCase(); }
    Hope that helps!

  • Case Insensitive search and "IN" Clause - Open SQL

    Hi,
    I have some doubts regarding Open SQL:
    Is there any support for Case Insensitive Search in Open SQL, is it availabe by default?
    Is there any restriction on number of elements in "IN" Clause, in Open SQL, is there any default number?
    I have checked the [Open SQL Grammer|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwce711/helpdata/en/9b/f46cabaa874bc9a82234e8cf1d0696/frameset.htm] also, but nothing found there.
    Thanks,
    Piyush
    P.S I didn't find any other appropriate place to post this thread, let me know the correct categorization of Open SQL in case its wrong.

    Is there any support for Case Insensitive Search in Open SQL, is it availabe by default?
    When you are querying any strings, it is always case sensitive.
    Is there any restriction on number of elements in "IN" Clause, in Open SQL, is there any default number?
    I don't think there area any. IN opearator works like combined ORs and here you don't have any restrictions in fields number.
